Effective exploitation of a geyser bubble-chamber equipment as a background-free fast neutron detector
Abstract: MOSCAB equipment, a geyser-concept bubble-chamber originally thought for the search of dark matter in the form of WIMPs, is employed for the detection of fast neutrons. Once the background-free operating conditions are determined such that the detector is sensitive only to neutrons, which occurs when the neutron energy threshold required for nucleation is higher than approximately 2.5 MeV, the d… ▽ More

On the critical energy required for homogeneous nucleation in bubble chambers employed in dark matter searches
Abstract: Two equations for the calculation of the critical energy required for homogeneous nucleation in a superheated liquid, and the related critical radius of the nucleated vapour bubble, are obtained, the former by the direct application of the first law of thermodynamics, the latter by considering that the bubble formation implies the overcoming of a barrier of the free enthalpy potential. Comparisons… ▽ More

MOSCAB: A geyser-concept bubble chamber to be used in a dark matter search
Abstract: The MOSCAB experiment (Materia OSCura A Bolle) uses the "geyser technique", a variant of the superheated liquid technique of extreme simplicity. Operating principles of the new dark matter detector and technical solutions of the device are reported in detail. First results obtained in a series of test runs taken in laboratory demonstrate that we have successfully built and tested a geyser-concept… ▽ More

Polynomial conserved quantities for constrained Willmore surfaces
Abstract: We define a hierarchy of special classes of constrained Willmore surfaces by means of the existence of a polynomial conserved quantity of some type, filtered by an integer. Type 1 with parallel top term characterises parallel mean curvature surfaces and, in codimension 1, type 1 characterises constant mean curvature surfaces. We show that this hierarchy is preserved under both spectral deformation… ▽ More

Dressing transformations of constrained Willmore surfaces
Abstract: We use the dressing method to construct transformations of constrained Willmore surfaces in arbitrary codimension. An adaptation of the Terng--Uhlenbeck theory of dressing by simple factors to this context leads us to define Bäcklund transforms of these surfaces for which we prove Bianchi permutability. Specialising to codimension 2, we generalise the Darboux transforms of Willmore surfaces via Ri… ▽ More

Transformations of harmonic bundles and Willmore surfaces
Abstract: Willmore surfaces are the extremals of the Willmore functional (possibly under a constraint on the conformal structure). With the characterization of Willmore surfaces by the (possibly perturbed) harmonicity of the mean curvature sphere congruence [Blaschke, Ejiri, Rigoli, Burstall-Calderbank], a zero-curvature formulation follows [Burstall-Calderbank]. Deformations on the level of harmonic maps p… ▽ More

Darboux transforms and simple factor dressing of constant mean curvature surfaces
Abstract: We define a transformation on harmonic maps from a Riemann surface into the 2-sphere which depends on a complex parameter, the so-called mu-Darboux transformation. In the case when the harmonic map N is the Gauss map of a constant mean curvature surface f and the parameter is real, the mu-Darboux transformation of -N is the Gauss map of a classical Darboux transform f. More generally, for all comp… ▽ More

Constrained Willmore Surfaces: Symmetries of a Moebius Invariant Integrable System
Abstract: This work is dedicated to the study of the Moebius invariant class of constrained Willmore surfaces and its symmetries. We define a spectral deformation by the action of a loop of flat metric connections; Baecklund transformations, by applying a dressing action; and, in 4-space, Darboux transformations, based on the solution of a Riccati equation. We establish a permutability between spectral defo… ▽ More
