The magnetic and structural properties of the recently discovered pnictogen/chalcogen-free superconductor LaFeSiH ($T_c\simeq10$~K) have been investigated by $^{57}$Fe synchrotron M{ö}ssbauer source (SMS) spectroscopy, x-ray and neutron powder diffraction and $^{29}$Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). No sign of long range magnetic order or local moments has been detected in any of the measurements and LaFeSiH remains tetragonal down to 2 K. The activated temperature dependence of both the NMR Knight shift and the relaxation rate $1/T_1$ is analogous to that observed in strongly overdoped Fe-based superconductors. These results, together with the temperature-independent NMR linewidth, show that LaFeSiH is an homogeneous metal, far from any magnetic or nematic instability, and with similar Fermi surface properties as strongly overdoped iron pnictides. This raises the prospect of enhancing the $T_c$ of LaFeSiH by reducing its carrier concentration through appropriate chemical substitutions. Additional SMS spectroscopy measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to 18.8~GPa found no measurable hyperfine field.

Although progress with twisted graphene nano-devices is boosting the superconductivity that is the consequence of their Moiré flat electronic bands, the immense choice for future development is an obstacle for their optimisation. We report here that soft-chemistry deintercalation of KC$_8$ breaks down graphite stacking generating a strong disorder that includes stacking twists and variable local doping. We obtain a bulk graphite whose individual crystallites have different stackings with arbitrary twists and doping, scanning in the same sample a huge number of stacking configurations. We perform magnetisation measurements on batches with different synthesis conditions. The disorder weakens the huge diamagnetism of graphite, revealing several phase transitions. A "ferromagnetic-like" magnetisation appears with Curie temperatures T$_0$$\sim$450K, that has to be subtracted from the measured magnetisation. Depending on sample synthesis, anomalies towards diamagnetic states appear at T$_c$$\sim$110K (3 samples), $\sim$240K (4 samples), $\sim$320K (2 samples). Electrical resistivity measurements yield anomalies for the T$_c\sim$240K transition, with one sample showing a 90% drop. We discuss the possibility that these (diamagnetic and resistitive) anomalies could be due to superconductivity.

Real-space modulated Charge Density Waves (CDW) are an ubiquituous feature in many families of superconductors. In particular, how CDW relates to superconductivity is an active and open question that has recently gathered much interest since CDWs have been discovered in many cuprates superconductors. Here we show that disorder induced by proton irradiation is a full-fledged tuning parameter that can bring essential information to answer this question as it affects CDW and superconductivity with different and unequivocal mechanisms. Specifically, in the model CDW superconductor Lu$_5$Ir$_4$Si$_{10}$ that develops a 1D CDW below 77\,K and s-wave superconductivity below 4\,K, we show that disorder enhances the superconducting critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$ and $H_\mathrm{c2}$ while it suppresses the CDW. Discussing how disorder affects both superconductivity and the CDW, we make a compelling case that superconductivity and CDW are competing for electronic density of states at the Fermi level in Lu$_5$Ir$_4$Si$_{10}$, and we reconcile the results obtained via the more common tuning parameters of pressure and doping. Owing to its prototypical, 1D, Peierls type CDW and the s-wave, weak-coupling nature of its superconductivity, this irradiation study of Lu$_5$Ir$_4$Si$_{10}$ provides the basis to understand and extend such studies to the more complex cases of density waves and superconductivity coexistence in heavy fermions, Fe-based or cuprates superconductors.

The magnetic moments are found to be aligned along the crystallographic $c$ axis. This is further confirmed by magnetic susceptibility data, which suggest the $c$ axis to be the easy magnetic axis. The determined magnetic structure is strikingly different from the incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of the closely related compound CeRhIn$_5$, in which the magnetic moments are antiferromagnetically aligned within the tetragonal basal plane.

Unconventional superconductivity has recently been discovered in the first iron-based superconducting silicide LaFeSiH. By using the complementary techniques of muon spin rotation, tunneling diode oscillator and density functional theory, we investigate the magnetic penetration depth and thereby the superconducting gap of this novel high-temperature superconductor. We find that the magnetic penetration depth displays a sub-$T^2$ behavior in the low-temperature regime below $T_c/3$, which evidences a nodal structure of the gap (or a gap with very deep minima). Even if the topology of the computed Fermi surface is compatible with the $s_\pm$-wave case with accidental nodes, its nesting and orbital-content features may eventually result in a $d$-wave state, more unusual for high-temperature superconductors of this class.

With the discovery of charge density waves (CDW) in most members of the cuprate high temperature superconductors, the interplay between superconductivity and CDW has become a key point in the debate on the origin of high temperature superconductivity. Some experiments in cuprates point toward a CDW state competing with superconductivity, but others raise the possibility of a CDW-superconductivity intertwined order, or more elusive pair-density wave (PDW). Here we have used proton irradiation to induce disorder in crystals of La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ and observed a striking 50% increase of $T_\mathrm{c}$ accompanied by a suppression of the CDW. This is in clear contradiction with the behaviour expected of a d-wave superconductor for which both magnetic and non-magnetic defects should suppress $T_\mathrm{c}$. Our results thus make an unambiguous case for the strong detrimental effect of the CDW on bulk superconductivity in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$. Using tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) measurements, we find evidence for dynamic layer decoupling in PDW phase. Our results establish irradiation-induced disorder as a particularly relevant tuning parameter for the many families of superconductors with coexisting density waves, which we demonstrate on superconductors such as the dichalcogenides and Lu$_5$Ir$_4$Si$_{10}$.

We here report measurements of the relative magnetic penetration depth, $ Δλ$, on several single crystals using a high precision tunnel diode oscillator technique. The temperature variation $Δλ(T)$ follows an exponential function for $T/T_c < 0.4$, consistent with a fully-gapped superconducting state and weak or moderately coupling superconductivity. By fitting the data we extract a $λ(0)$-value of $\sim 500$~nm. The normalized superfluid density is in good agreement with the computed curve for a type-I superconductor with nonlocal electrodynamics. Small steps are observed in $Δλ(T)$, which possibly relates to a locally lower $T_c$ due to defects in the single crystalline sample. single crystalline sample.

By comparison, close iso-electronic compounds such as NbSe$_2$, TaS$_2$ and TaSe$_2$ all have CDW in at least one polytype. Here, we report traces of CDW in the 2H polytype of NbS$_2$, using diffuse x-ray scattering measurements at 77\,K and room temperature. We observe 12 extremely weak satellite peaks located at $\pm$13$^\mathrm{o}$ 54' from $\vec{a}^*$ and $\vec{b}^*$ around each Bragg peaks in the $(h,k,0)$ plane. These satellite peaks are commensurate with the lattice via $3\vec{q}-\vec{q}\,'=\vec{a}^*$, where $\vec{q}\,'$ is the 120$^{\circ}$ rotation of $\vec{q}$, and define two chiral $\sqrt{13}\,a\times\sqrt{13}\,a$ superlattices in real space. These commensurate wavevectors and tilt angle are identical to those of the CDW observed in the 1T polytype of TaS$_2$ and TaSe$_2$. To understand this similarity and the faintness of the peaks, we discuss possible sources of local 1T polytype environment in bulk 2H-NbS$_2$ crystals.

We present a detailed study of the phase diagram of copper intercalated TiSe$_2$ single crystals, combining local Hall-probe magnetometry, tunnel diode oscillator technique (TDO), specific-heat, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. A series of the Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ samples from three different sources with various copper content $x$ and superconducting critical temperatures $T_c$ have been investigated. We first show that the vortex penetration mechanism is dominated by geometrical barriers enabling a precise determination of the lower critical field, $H_{c1}$. We then show that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density deduced from magnetic measurements (both $H_{c1}$ and TDO techniques) clearly suggests the existence of a small energy gap in the system, with a coupling strength $2Δ_s \sim [2.4-2.8]k_BT_c$, regardless of the copper content, in puzzling contradiction with specific heat measurements which can be well described by one single large gap $2Δ_l \sim [3.7-3.9]k_BT_c$. Finally, our measurements reveal a non-trivial doping dependence of the condensation energy, which remains to be understood.

Single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction as a function of temperature and pressure has revealed a complex biphase mixture in superconducting FeSe. Based on our experimental results we construct a phase diagram where structural behavior and superconducting properties of FeSe are found to be correlated. We show that below 6 GPa, where pressure promotes the superconducting critical temperature, the FeSe structure is composed of 2D layers of edge-shared FeSe4 tetrahedra, while above 6 GPa the superconductivity is strongly suppressed on formation of a new orthorhombic polymorph characterized by a 3D network of face sharing FeSe6 octahedra. Therefore changes in topology and connectivity of the FeSe structure are found to be detrimental for superconductivity to exist. This previously controversial crystal structure of the high pressure polymorph of FeSe was also unambiguously determined. High pressure FeSe adopts an orthorhombic MnP-type structure (Pnma) which corresponds to a slightly distorted hexagonal NiAs-type arrangement (P63/mmc). The structural transformation from the low- to high-pressure FeSe polymorph is first order in nature and is manifested as antiparallel displacements within the Fe and Se sublattices.

Above this pressure, the commensurate TCDW slowly decreases coexisting with superconductivity within our full pressure range.

The interplay between charge density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity has attracted much attention. This is the central issue of along standing debate in simple transition metal dichalcogenides without strong electronic correlations, such as 2H-NbSe$\_2$, in which twosuch phases coexist. The importance of anisotropic electron-phonon interaction has been recently highlighted from both theoretical and experimental point of view, and explains some of the key features of the formation of the CDW in this system. On the other hand, other aspects, such as the effects of anharmonicity, remain poorly understood despite their manifest importance in such soft-phonon driven phase transition. At the theoretical level in particular, their prohibitive computational price usually prevents their investigation within conventional perturbative approaches. Here, we address this issue using a combination of high resolution inelastic X-ray scattering measurements of the phonon dispersion, as afunction of temperature and pressure, with state of the art ab initio calculations. By explicitly taking into account anharmonic effects, we obtain an accurate, quantitative, description of the (P,T) dependence of the phonon spectrum, accounting for the rapid destruction of the CDW under pressure by zero mode vibrations - or quantum fluctuations - of the lattice. The low-energy longitudinal acoustic mode that drives the CDW transition barely contributes to superconductivity, explaining the insensitivity of the superconducting critical temperature to the CDW transition.

We determine a general criterion for the crossover, as function of an external parameter such as concentration, from the region controlled solely by thermal fluctuations to that where quantum effects become observable. The properties of materials with low coherence lengths will thus be altered far away from the QCP.

The temperature dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T) of 2H-NbS2 varies considerably when increasing the pressure. At low pressures, Hc2(0) decreases, and at higher pressures both Tc and Hc2(0) increase simultaneously. This points out that there are pressure induced changes of the Fermi surface, which we analyze in terms of a simplified two band approach.

We measured the electrical resistivity from 2K up to 900K on high quality single crystals of Lu5Ir4Si10. A clear thermal hysteresis was found at the onset of the Charge Density Wave (CDW), evidencing the first order nature of the transition. When tantalum is included in the compound, the CDW is destroyed and the superconducting critical temperature is enhanced. Finally, we present specific heat and magnetic penetration depth in the Meissner state. We show that the superconducting properties are very close to a weak coupling BCS superconductor.

The magnetic penetration depth $λ$ has been measured in MgCNi$_{3}$ single crystals using both a high precision Tunnel Diode Oscillator technique (TDO) and Hall probe magnetization (HPM). In striking contrast to previous measurements in powders, $δλ$(T) deduced from TDO measurements increases exponentially at low temperature, clearly showing that the superconducting gap is fully open over the whole Fermi surface. An absolute value at zero temperature $λ(0)=230 $nm is found from the lower critical field measured by HPM. We also discuss the observed difference of the superfluid density deduced from both techniques. A possible explanation could be due to a systematic decrease of the critical temperature at the sample surface.

We report on the temperature dependence of the in plane magnetic penetration depth ($λ_{ab}$) and first penetration field ($H_f\propto 1/λ_{ab}^2(T)$ for $H\|c$) in 2H-NbS$_2$ single crystals. An exponential temperature dependence is clearly observed in $λ_{ab}$(T) at low temperature, signing the presence of a fully open superconducting gap. This compound is the only superconducting 2H-dichalcogenide which does not develop a charge density wave (CDW). However as previously observed in 2H-NbSe$_2$, this gap ($Δ_{1}=1.1\, k_{B}T_{c}$) is significantly smaller than the standard BCS weak coupling value. At higher temperature, a larger gap ($Δ_{2}=1.8\, k_{B}T_{c}$) has to be introduced to describe the data which are compatible with a two gap model. The superconducting gaps are hence very similar in NbS$_2$ and NbSe$_2$ and we show here that both of them open in the strongly coupled Nb tubular sheets independently of the presence of a CDW or not.

The zero bias peak is additionally modulated by the commensurate $3a_0 \times 3a_0$ charge density wave of 2H-TaSe$_2$. Multilayers of 2H-TaSe$_2$ show a spatially homogeneous superconducting gap with a critical temperature also of 1 K. We discuss possible origins for the peculiar tunneling conductance in single layers.

The temperature dependence of the phonon spectrum in the superconducting transition metal dichalcogenide 2H-NbS$_2$ is measured by diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering. A deep, wide and strongly temperature dependent softening, of the two lowest energy longitudinal phonons bands, appears along the $\mathrm{ΓM}$ symmetry line in reciprocal space. In sharp contrast to the iso-electronic compounds 2H-NbSe$_2$, the soft phonons energies are finite, even at very low temperature, and no charge density wave instability occurs, in disagreement with harmonic ab-initio calculations. We show that 2H-NbS$_2$ is at the verge of the charge density wave transition and its occurrence is only suppressed by the large anharmonic effects. Moreover, the anharmonicity and the electron phonon coupling both show a strong in-plane anisotropy.

Cho et al. [Phys. Rev. B, 84, 174502 (2011)] have reported on the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth deduced from Tunnel Diode Oscillator (TDO) measurements in optimally doped Fe(Se,Te) single crystals. According to their analysis, these measurements chould suggest a nodeless two-gap pairing symmetry with strong pair breaking effects. However, to reach this conclusion, the authors fit the temperature dependence of the superfluid density with a two band {\it clean} limit model which is incompatible with the presence of strong pair breaking effects, deduced from the $T^n$ temperature dependence of the London penetration depth below $T_c/3$. Moreover they claim that their results are also ruling out the suggestion that surface conditions can significantly affect the TDO data but this conclusion is based on one very specific damaging process, and is completely ignoring the large dispersion in the previously published TDO data.

Exponential decay of the electronic specific heat at low temperatures proved that a superconducting energy gap is fully open on the whole Fermi surface, in agreement with our previous magnetic penetration depth measurements on the same crystals. The specific-heat data analysis shows consistently the strong coupling strength 2D/kTc ~ 4. This scenario is supported by the direct gap measurements via the point-contact spectroscopy. Moreover, the spectroscopy measurements show a decrease in the critical temperature at the sample surface accounting for the observed differences of the superfluid density deduced from the measurements by different techniques.

The heat capacity of a 2H-NbS2 single crystal has been measured by a highly sensitive ac technique down to 0.6 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. At very low temperatures data show excitations over an energy gap (2DS/kBTc \approx 2.1) much smaller than the BCS value. The overall temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat Ce can be explained either by the existence of a strongly anisotropic single-energy gap or within a two-gap scenario with the large gap about twice bigger than the small one. The field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient shows a strong curvature for both principal-field orientations, parallel and perpendicular to the c axis of the crystal, resulting in a magnetic field dependence of the superconducting anisotropy. These features are discussed in comparison to the case of MgB2 and to the data obtained by scanning-tunneling spectroscopy. We conclude that the two-gap scenario better describes the gap structure of NbS2 than the anisotropic s-wave model.

Measurements were made with a radio-frequency tunnel diode oscillator circuit at temperatures down to 100 mK. Analysis of the anisotropic superfluid density shows that a reduced energy gap is located on one or more of the quasi-two-dimensional Nb Fermi surface sheets rather than on the Se sheet, in contrast to some previous reports. This result suggests that the gap structure is not simply related to the weak electron-phonon coupling on the Se sheet and is therefore important for microscopic models of anisotropic superconductivity in this compound.

We present transport and specific heat measurements on high quality single crystals of UPt$_3$ before and after irradiation by high energy electrons. We observe a strong dependence of the critical temperature with the sample thickness. The dramatic effects of the irradiation on the specific heat in the superconducting state can then be simply explained in terms of an inhomogeneous distribution of superconducting transition temperatures. The question of the failure of the "universal limit" in the heat transport of UPt3 is reexamined, and the conditions for a clean experimental test are established.
