OJ 287 is a BL Lacertae type quasar in which the active galactic nucleus (AGN) outshines the host galaxy by an order of magnitude. The only exception to this may be at minimum light when the AGN activity is so low that the host galaxy may make quite a considerable contribution to the photometric intensity of the source. Such a dip or a fade in the intensity of OJ 287 occurred in November 2017, when its brightness was about 1.75 magnitudes lower than the recent mean level. We compare the observations of this fade with similar fades in OJ 287 observed earlier in 1989, 1999, and 2010. It appears that there is a relatively strong reddening of the B$-$V colours of OJ 287 when its V-band brightness drops below magnitude 17. Similar changes are also seen V$-$R, V$-$I, and R$-$I colours during these deep fades. These data support the conclusion that the total magnitude of the host galaxy is $V=18.0 \pm 0.3$, corresponding to $M_{K}=-26.5 \pm 0.3$ in the K-band. This is in agreement with the results, obtained using the integrated surface brightness method, from recent surface photometry of the host. These results should encourage us to use the colour separation method also in other host galaxies with strongly variable AGN nuclei. In the case of OJ 287, both the host galaxy and its central black hole are among the biggest known, and its position in the black hole mass-galaxy mass diagram lies close to the mean correlation.

Morphology of nova ejecta is essential for fully understanding the physical processes involved in nova eruptions. We studied the 3D morphology of the expanding ejecta of the extremely slow nova V1280 Sco with a unique light curve. Synthetic line profile spectra were compared to the observed [O III] 4959, 5007 and [N II] 5755 emission line profiles in order to find the best-fit morphology, inclination angle, and maximum expansion velocity of the ejected shell. We derive the best fitting expansion velocity, inclination, and squeeze as $V_{\rm exp} = 2100^{+100}_{-100}$ \,km\,s$^{-1}$, $i = 80^{+1}_{-3}$ deg, and $squ = 1.0^{+0.0}_{-0.1}$ using [O III] line profiles, and $V_{\rm exp} = 1600^{+100}_{-100}$ \,km\,s$^{-1}$, $i = 81^{+2}_{-4}$ deg, and $squ = 1.0^{+0.0}_{-0.1}$ using [N II] 5755 line profile. A high inclination angle is consistent with the observational results showing multiple absorption lines originating from clumpy gases which are produced in dense and slow equatorially focused outflows. Based on additional observational features such as optical flares near the maximum light and dust formation on V1280 Sco, a model of internal shock interaction between slow ejecta and fast wind proposed for the $γ$-ray emission detected in other novae seems to be applicable to this extremely slow and peculiar nova. Increasing the sample size of novae whose morphology is studied will be helpful in addressing long-standing mysteries in novae such as the dominant energy source to power the optical light at the maximum, optical flares near the maximum, clumpiness of the ejecta, and dust formation.

We constructed a comprehensive model atom for NeI -- NeII using the most up-to-date atomic data available and evaluated the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for NeI and NeII in classical 1D models representing the atmospheres of B-type stars. We find that the large NLTE strengthening of the NeI lines corresponding to the 2p$^5$3p $-$ 2p$^5$3s transitions array occurs due to extremely small photoionization cross-sections of 2p$^5$3s levels that leads to strong overpopulation of these levels relative to their LTE populations. The deviations from LTE for the most NeII lines are small and do not exceed 0.11~dex in the absolute value. We analysed 20 lines of NeI and 13 lines of NeII for twenty-four B-type stars in the temperature range of 10\,400 $\le$ \Teff\ $\le$ 33\,400~K. For five stars, the NLTE leads to consistent abundances of NeI and NeII, while the difference in LTE abundance can reach up to 0.50~dex. The using of the experimental oscillator strengths recently measured by Piracha et al. (2015) leads to smaller line-by-line scatter for the most investigated stars. The averaged neon abundance in twenty-four B-type stars in solar neighborhood is 8.02$\pm$0.05. This value may provide indirect constraints on solar photospheric neon abundance.

The X-ray and $γ$-ray light curves correlate well, with no delay > 3 hours, implying general co-spatiality of the emission regions. The $γ$-ray-optical flux-flux relation changes with activity state, ranging from a linear to a more complex dependence. The behaviour of the Stokes parameters at optical and radio wavelengths, including 43 GHz VLBA images, supports either a predominantly helical magnetic field or motion of the radiating plasma along a spiral path. Apparent speeds of emission knots range from 10 to 37c, with the highest values requiring bulk Lorentz factors close to those needed to explain $γ$-ray variability on very short time scales. The Mg II emission line flux in the `blue' and `red' wings correlates with the optical synchrotron continuum flux density, possibly providing a variable source of seed photons for inverse Compton scattering. In the radio bands we find progressive delays of the most prominent light curve maxima with decreasing frequency, as expected from the frequency dependence of the $τ=1$ surface of synchrotron self-absorption. The global maximum in the 86 GHz light curve becomes less prominent at lower frequencies, while a local maximum, appearing in 2014, strengthens toward decreasing frequencies, becoming pronounced at $\sim5$ GHz. These tendencies suggest different Doppler boosting of stratified radio-emitting zones in the jet.

We use radio-to-optical data obtained by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope, 15 GHz data from the Owens Valley Radio Observatory, 91 and 103 GHz data from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, near-infrared data from the Rapid Eye Monitor telescope, as well as data from the Swift (optical-UV and X-rays) and Fermi ($γ$ rays) satellites to study flux and spectral variability and the correlation between flux changes at different wavelengths. Unprecedented $γ$-ray flaring activity was observed during 2016 November-2017 February, with four major outbursts. A peak flux of (2158 $\pm$ 63)$\times$10$^{-8}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, corresponding to a luminosity of (2.2 $\pm$ 0.1)$\times$10$^{50}$ erg s$^{-1}$, was reached on 2016 December 28. These four $γ$-ray outbursts have corresponding events in the near-infrared, optical, and UV bands, with the peaks observed at the same time. A general agreement between X-ray and $γ$-ray activity is found. The $γ$-ray flux variations show a general, strong correlation with the optical ones with no time lag between the two bands and a comparable variability amplitude. This $γ$-ray/optical relationship is in agreement with the geometrical model that has successfully explained the low-energy flux and spectral behaviour, suggesting that the long-term flux variations are mainly due to changes in the Doppler factor produced by variations of the viewing angle of the emitting regions. The difference in behaviour between radio and higher energy emission would be ascribed to different viewing angles of the jet regions producing their emission.

Our models predict the emission lines of C II 9903~Å and 18535~Å to appear at effective temperature \Teff~$\geq$~17\,500~K, those of C II 6151~Å and 6461~Å to appear at \Teff~$>$~25\,000~K, and those of C III 5695, 6728--44, 9701--17~Å to appear at \Teff~$\geq$~35\,000~K (log~$g$=4.0). Emission occurs in the lines of minority species, where the photoionization-recombination mechanism provides a depopulation of the lower levels to a greater extent than the upper levels. For C II 9903 and 18535~Å, the upper levels are mainly populated from C III reservoir through the Rydberg states. For C III 5695 and 6728--44~Å, the lower levels are depopulated due to photon losses in UV transitions at 885, 1308, and 1426--28~Å which become optically thin in the photosphere. We analysed the lines of C I, C II, C III, and C IV for twenty-two O-B-type stars with temperature range between 15\,800 $\leq$~\Teff~$\leq$ 38\,000~K. Abundances from emission lines of C I, C II and C III are in agreement with those from absorption ones for most of the stars. We obtained log~$ε_{\rm C}$=8.36$\pm$0.08 from twenty B-type stars, that is in line with the present-day Cosmic Abundance Standard. The obtained carbon abundances in 15~Mon and HD~42088 from emission and absorption lines are 8.27$\pm$0.11 and 8.31$\pm$0.11, respectively.

The list covers a spectral region between 4900A and 10000A. We register 207 WELs in this star and identified 190 lines including ten ions (nine elements). Emission lines of C II, N I, Cr II, Mn II, and Ni II have been identified among normal B-type stars for the first time. 17 emission lines remain unidentified. We compare our list with the published list of WELs for 3 Cen A (Wahlgren and Hubrig 2004) and found that numbers of detected emission lines reflect differences in abundance between these two stars. We detect 13 C I emission lines in iota Her (normal in C), while only one C I emission line is found in 3 Cen A (deficient in C). Many emission lines of P II and Cu II have been detected in 3 Cen A (overabundant in both P and Cu), while no emission line of these ions has been found in ι Her. Many emission lines of Fe II are visible in the shorter wavelength side of 6000 A in iota Her, while these emission lines are missing in 3 Cen A. Close inspections of spectral data of 3 Cen A reveal that apparently missing Fe II lines appear as absorption lines in this star. Because these two stars have nearly the same atmospheric parameters (Teff and log g), a physical interpretation which is independent on these two parameters is needed to account for this observation.

Blazar OJ287 exhibits large thermal flares at least twice every 12 years. The times of these flares have been predicted successfully using the model of a quasi-Keplerian eccentric black hole binary where the secondary impacts the accretion disk of the primary, creating the thermal flares. New measurements of the historical light curve have been combined with the observations of the 2015 November/December flare to identify the impact record since year 1886, and to constrain the orbit of the binary. The orbit solution shows that the binary period, now 12.062 year, is decreasing at the rate of 36 days per century. This corresponds to an energy loss to gravitational waves that is 6.5 +- 4 % less than the rate predicted by the standard quadrupolar gravitational wave (GW) emission. We show that the difference is due to higher order gravitational radiation reaction terms that include the dominant order tail contributions.

Absorption lines of the two rarely observed heavy elements Br II and Kr II are detected in both stars and these elements are both over-abundant. The centroid wavelengths of the Ca II infrared triplet lines in these stars are red-shifted relative to those lines in iota Her and the presence of heavy isotopes of Ca (mass number 44 - 46) in these two stars are confirmed. In spite of these similarities, there are several remarkable differences in the abundance pattern between these two stars. N is under-abundant in HD 185330, as in many Hg-Mn stars, while it is significantly over-abundant in 3 Cen A. P and Ga are both over-abundant in 3 Cen A, while only P is over-abundant and no trace of absorption line of Ga II can be found in HD 185330. Large over-abundances of Kr and Xe are found in both stars, while the abundance ratios Kr / Xe are significantly different between them (-1.4 dex in HD 185330 and +1.2 dex in 3 Cen A). Some physical explanations are needed to account for these qualitative differences.

We present the results of our power spectral density analysis for the BL Lac object OJ\,287, utilizing the {\it Fermi}-LAT survey at high-energy $γ$-rays, {\it Swift}-XRT in X-rays, several ground-based telescopes and the {\it Kepler} satellite in the optical, and radio telescopes at GHz frequencies. The light curves are modeled in terms of continuous-time auto-regressive moving average (CARMA) processes. Owing to the inclusion of the {\it Kepler} data, we were able to construct \emph{for the first time} the optical variability power spectrum of a blazar without any gaps across $\sim6$ dex in temporal frequencies. Our analysis reveals that the radio power spectra are of a colored-noise type on timescales ranging from tens of years down to months, with no evidence for breaks or other spectral features. The overall optical power spectrum is also consistent with a colored noise on the variability timescales ranging from 117 years down to hours, with no hints of any quasi-periodic oscillations. The X-ray power spectrum resembles the radio and optical power spectra on the analogous timescales ranging from tens of years down to months. Finally, the $γ$-ray power spectrum is noticeably different from the radio, optical, and X-ray power spectra of the source: we have detected a characteristic relaxation timescale in the {\it Fermi}-LAT data, corresponding to $\sim 150$\,days, such that on timescales longer than this, the power spectrum is consistent with uncorrelated (white) noise, while on shorter variability timescales there is correlated (colored) noise.

Previously unrecognized weak emission lines originating from high excitation states of Si II (12.84 eV) and Al II (13.08 eV) are detected in the red region spectra of slowly rotating early B-type stars. We surveyed high resolution spectra of 35 B-type stars covering spectral sub-types between B1 and B7 near the main sequence and found the emission line of SiII at 6239.6 A in all 13 stars having spectral sub-types B2 and B2.5. There are 17 stars belonging to sub-type B3 and seven stars among them are found to show the emission line of Si II. The emission line of Al II at 6243.4 A is detected in a narrower temperature range (Teff between 19000K and 23000 K) in nine stars. Both of these emission lines are not detected in cooler (Teff < 16000 K) stars in our sample. The emission line of Si II at 6239.6 A shows a single-peaked and symmetric profile and the line center has no shift in wavelength with respect to those of low excitation absorption lines of Si II. Measured half width of the emission line is the same as those of rotationally broadened low excitation absorption lines of Si II. These observations imply that the emitting gas is not circumstellar origin, but is located at the outermost layer of the atmosphere, covering the whole stellar surface and co-rotates with the star.

We carried out a pilot campaign of radio and optical band intra-day variability (IDV) observations of five blazars (3C66A, S5 0716+714, OJ287, B0925+504, and BL Lacertae) on December 18--21, 2015 by using the radio telescope in Effelsberg (Germany) and several optical telescopes in Asia, Europe, and America. After calibration, the light curves from both 5 GHz radio band and the optical R band were obtained, although the data were not smoothly sampled over the sampling period of about four days. We tentatively analyse the amplitudes and time scales of the variabilities, and any possible periodicity. The blazars vary significantly in the radio (except 3C66A and BL Lacertae with only marginal variations) and optical bands on intra- and inter-day time scales, and the source B0925+504 exhibits a strong quasi-periodic radio variability. No significant correlation between the radio- and optical-band variability appears in the five sources, which we attribute to the radio IDV being dominated by interstellar scintillation whereas the optical variability comes from the source itself. However, the radio- and optical-band variations appear to be weakly correlated in some sources and should be investigated based on well-sampled data from future observations.

The model predicted a major optical outburst in December 2015. We found that the outburst did occur within the expected time range, peaking on 2015 December 5 at magnitude 12.9 in the optical R-band. Based on Swift/XRT satellite measurements and optical polarization data, we find that it included a major thermal component. Its timing provides an accurate estimate for the spin of the primary black hole, chi = 0.313 +- 0.01. The present outburst also confirms the established general relativistic properties of the system such as the loss of orbital energy to gravitational radiation at the 2 % accuracy level and it opens up the possibility of testing the black hole no-hair theorem with a 10 % accuracy during the present decade.

We report spectroscopic observations of the resonance lines of singly ionized $^{7}$Be in the blue-shifted absorption line systems found in the post-outburst spectra of two classical novae -- V5668 Sgr (Nova Sagittarii 2015 No.2) and V2944 Oph (Nova Ophiuchi 2015). The unstable isotope, $^{7}$Be, should has been created during the thermonuclear runaway (TNR) of these novae and decays to form $^{7}$Li within a short period (a half-life of 53.22 days). Confirmations of $^{7}$Be are the second and the third ones following the first case found in V339 Del by Tajitsu et al. (2015). The blue-shifted absorption line systems in both novae are clearly divided into two velocity components, both of which contain $^{7}$Be. This means that the absorbing gases in both velocity components consist of products of TNR. We estimate amounts of $^{7}$Be produced during outbursts of both novae and conclude that significant $^{7}$Li should have been created. These findings strongly suggest that the explosive production of $^{7}$Li via the reaction $^{3}$He($α$,$γ$)$^{7}$Be and subsequent decay to $^{7}$Li occurs frequently among classical novae and contributes to the process of the Galactic Li enrichment.

The origin of lithium (Li) and its production process have long been an unsettled question in cosmology and astrophysics. Candidates environments of Li production events or sites suggested by previous studies include big bang nucleosynthesis, interactions of energetic cosmic rays with interstellar matter, evolved low mass stars, novae, and supernova explosions. Chemical evolution models and observed stellar Li abundances suggest that at least half of the present Li abundance may have been produced in red giants, asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, and novae. However, no direct evidence for the supply of Li from stellar objects to the Galactic medium has yet been found. Here we report on the detection of highly blue-shifted resonance lines of the singly ionized radioactive isotope of beryllium, $^{7}$Be, in the near ultraviolet (UV) spectra of the classical nova V339 Del (Nova Delphini 2013). Spectra were obtained 38 to 48 days after the explosion. $^{7}$Be decays to form $^{7}$Li within a short time (half-life 53.22 days). The spectroscopic detection of this fragile isotope implies that it has been created during the nova explosion via the reaction $^{3}\mbox{He}(α,γ)^{7}\mbox{Be}$, and supports the theoretical prediction that a significant amount of $^{7}$Li could be produced in classical nova explosions. This finding opens a new way to explore $^{7}$Li production in classical novae and provides a clue to the mystery of the Galactic evolution of lithium.

We carried out optical high-dispersion spectroscopic monitoring of the Be disk in a Be/X-ray binary A 0535+262/V725 Tau from 2009 to 2012, covering two giant outbursts and several normal outbursts. This monitoring was performed in order to investigate variabilities of the Be disk due to the interaction with the neutron star in recent X-ray active phase from 2008 to 2011. Such variabilities give a clue to uncleared detailed mechanism for very bright X-ray outbursts, which are unique to some Be/X-ray binaries with relatively wide and eccentric orbit. In the previous letter (Moritani et al. 2011), a brief overview of line profile variabilities around the 2009 giant outburst was given and the possibility of a warped Be disk was discussed. In this paper, a full analysis of the Halpha line profiles as well as other line profiles is carried out. A bright blue component, or blue "shoulder", showing up after periastron indicates the presence of a dense gas stream toward the neutron star, which is associated with observed outbursts. We re-analyze the Halpha line profiles before 2009 (down to 2005) in order to investigate the variability of the the disk structure in the innermost region, which seems to have detached from the Be star surface by 2008. A redshifted enhanced component is remarkable in all emission lines observed around the 2009 giant outburst, occasionally forming a triple peak. These features indicate that the Be disk was warped in X-ray active phase. We estimate the position of the warped region from fitting the radial velocity of the redshifted enhanced component of Halpha, and find that it was very close to the periastron when two giant outbursts in 2009 and 2011 and a bright normal outburst in 2010 March occurred. These facts strongly suggest that the warped Be disk triggered these giant outbursts.

In an attempt to carry out a systematic study on the behavior of the photospheric abundances of Li, C, and O (along with Fe) for Hyades main-sequence stars in the T_eff range of ~5000-7000K, we conducted an extensive spectrum-synthesis analysis applied to four spectral regions (comprising lines of Fe-group elements, Li I 6708 line, C I 7111-7119 lines, and O I 6156-8 lines) based on the high-dispersion spectra of 68 selected F-G type stars belonging to this cluster. The abundances of C and O turned out to be fairly uniform in a marginally supersolar level such like the case of Fe: <[C/H]> = +0.15 (sigma = 0.08), <[O/H]> = +0.22 (sigma = 0.14), and <[Fe/H]> = +0.11(sigma = 0.08), suggesting that the primordial abundances are almost retained for these elements. Strictly, however, they show a slightly increasing trend with a decrease in T_eff (typically on the order of ~10^(-4) dex/K; while this might be due to an improper choice of atmospheric parameters, we found it hard to give a quantitatively reasonable explanation. Regarding Li, we confirmed the well-known T_eff-dependent trend in the Li abundance reported so far (a conspicuous Li-trough at 6300K <T_eff< 6700K and a progressive decrease toward a lower T_eff at T_eff < 6000K), which means that the surface Li of Hyades stars is essentially controlled only by T_eff and other parameters such as the rotational velocity are almost irrelevant.

Similar multiple absorption lines associated with Na I D doublet and Ca II H and K are observed. Na I D doublet absorption lines have been observed since 2009, while the metastable He I* absorption lines were absent in 2009 and were detected in 2011 (four years after the burst). We find different time variations in depths and velocities of blue-shifted absorption components among He I*, Na I, and Ca II. The complex time evolutions of these lines can be explained by assuming changes in density and recombination/ionization rate when the ejecta expand and the photosphere contracts to become hotter. The multiple absorption lines originate in the ejected materials consisting of clumpy components, which obscure a significant part of the continuum emitting region. We estimate the total mass of the ejected material to be on the order of ~ 10^{-4} Mo, using metastable He I* 3188 and 3889 absorption lines.

Our photometric observations show a declining event in optical bands shortly after the maximum light which continues $\sim$ 250 days. The event is most probably caused by a dust formation. The event is accompanied by a short ($\sim$ 30 days) re-brightening episode ($\sim$ 2.5 mag in $V$), which suggests a re-ignition of the surface nuclear burning. After 2008, the $y$ band observations show a very long plateau at around $y$ = 10.5 for more than 1000 days until April 2011 ($\sim$ 1500 days after the maximum light). The nova had taken a very long time ($\sim$ 50 months) before entering the nebular phase (clear detection of both [\ion{O}{iii}] 4959 and 5007) and is still continuing to generate the wind caused by H-burning. The finding suggests that V1280 Sco is going through the historically slowest evolution. The interval from the maximum light (2007 February 16) to the beginning of the nebular phase is longer than any previously known slow novae: V723 Cas (18 months), RR Pic (10 months), or HR Del (8 months). It suggests that the mass of a white dwarf in the V1280 Sco system might be 0.6 $M_\mathrm{\sun}$ or smaller. The distance, based on our measurements of the expansion velocity combined with the directly measured size of the dust shell, is estimated to be 1.1 $\pm$ 0.5 kpc.

We determined chemical abundances of the Extremely Metal-Poor (EMP) star S15-19 ([Fe/H]=-3.0) in the Sextans dwarf galaxy. While heavy neutron-capture elements (e.g., Ba) are generally deficient in EMP stars in dwarf galaxies, this object was shown to have an exceptional over-abundance of Ba ([Ba/Fe] +0.5) by a previous study, which is similar to those of r-process-enhanced stars found in the field halo. Our new high-resolution spectroscopy for this object for the blue region, however, reveals that no clear excess of r-process elements, like Eu, appears in this object. Moreover, a significant excess of carbon ([C/Fe]= +1.0) and a deficiency of Sr ([Sr/Fe] = -1.4) are found for this object. Taking the variation of radial velocities measured at the two different epochs into consideration, the origin of the excesses of heavy neutron-capture elements in S15-19 is not the r-process, but is the s-process in an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star that was the binary companion (primary) of this object. Carbon- and s-process-enhanced material should have been transferred to the surface of S15-19 across the binary system. These results are compared with carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars in the field halo.

To revisit the long-standing problem of possible inconsistency concerning the oxygen composition in the current galactic gas and in the solar atmosphere (i.e., the former being appreciably lower by ~0.3 dex) apparently contradicting the galactic chemical evolution, we carried out oxygen abundance determinations for 64 mid- through late-B stars by using the O I 6156-8 lines while taking into account the non-LTE effect, and compared them with the solar O abundance established in the same manner. The resulting mean oxygen abundance was <A(O)> = 8.71 (+/- 0.06), which means that [O/H] (star-Sun differential abundance) is ~-0.1, the difference being less significant than previously thought. Moreover, since the 3D correction may further reduce the reference solar oxygen abundance (8.81) by ~0.1 dex, we conclude that the photospheric O abundances of these B stars are almost the same as that of the Sun. We also determined the non-LTE abundances of neon for the sample B stars from Ne I 6143/6163 lines to be <A(Ne)> = 8.02 (+/- 0.09), leading to the Ne-to-O ratio of ~0.2 consistent with the recent studies. This excludes a possibility of considerably high Ne/O ratio once proposed as a solution to the confronted solar model problem.

We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of a classical nova, V2362 Cyg (= Nova Cygni 2006). V2362 Cyg experienced a peculiar rebrightening with a long duration from 100 to 240 d after the maximum of the nova. Our multicolor observation indicates an emergence of a pseudophotosphere with an effective temperature of 9000 K at the rebrightening maximum. After the rebrightening maximum, the object showed a slow fading homogeneously in all of the used bands for one week. This implies that the fading just after the rebrightening maximum ( less or equal 1 week ) was caused by a slowly shrinking pseudophotosphere. Then, the NIR flux drastically increased, while the optical flux steeply declined. The optical and NIR flux was consistent with blackbody radiation with a temperature of 1500 K during this NIR rising phase. These facts are likely to be explained by dust formation in the nova ejecta. Assuming an optically thin case, we estimate the dust mass of 10^(-8) -- 10^(-10) M_solar, which is less than those in typical dust-forming novae. These results support the senario that a second, long-lasting outflow, which caused the rebrightening, interacted with a fraction of the initial outflow and formed dust grains.

We present the results of a high resolution (R$\sim$20000) FLAMES/GIRAFFE abundance study at ESO/VLT of 81 photometrically selected red giant branch stars in the central 25$'$ of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We present abundances of \alfe\ (Mg, Si, Ca and Ti), iron-peak elements (Fe, Ni and Cr) and heavy elements (Y, Ba, La, Nd and Eu). Our sample was randomly selected, and is clearly dominated by the younger and more metal rich component of Fornax which represents the major fraction of stars in the central region. This means that the majority of our stars are 1$-$4 Gyr old, and thus represent the end phase of chemical evolution in this system. Our sample of stars has unusually low [$α$/Fe], [Ni/Fe] and [Na/Fe] compared to the Milky Way stellar populations at the same [Fe/H]. The particularly important role of stellar winds from low metallicity AGB stars in the creation of s-process elements is clearly seen from the high [Ba/Y]. Furthermore, we present evidence for an s-process contribution to Eu.

(Abridged) OJ287 is a BL Lac object that has shown double-peaked bursts at regular intervals of ~12 yr during the last ~40 yr. We analyse optical photopolarimetric monitoring data from 2005-2009, during which the latest double-peaked outburst occurred. The aim of this study is twofold: firstly, we aim to analyse variability patterns and statistical properties of the optical polarization light-curve. We find a strong preferred position angle in optical polarization. The preferred position angle can be explained by separating the jet emission into two components: an optical polarization core and chaotic jet emission. The optical polarization core is stable on time scales of years and can be explained as emission from an underlying quiescent jet component. The chaotic jet emission sometimes exhibits a circular movement in the Stokes plane. We interpret these events as a shock front moving forwards and backwards in the jet, swiping through a helical magnetic field. Secondly, we use our data to assess different binary black hole models proposed to explain the regularly appearing double-peaked bursts in OJ287. We compose a list of requirements a model has to fulfil. The list includes not only characteristics of the light-curve but also other properties of OJ287, such as the black hole mass and restrictions on accretion flow properties. We rate all existing models using this list and conclude that none of the models is able to explain all observations. We discuss possible new explanations and propose a new approach to understanding OJ287. We suggest that both the double-peaked bursts and the evolution of the optical polarization position angle could be explained as a sign of resonant accretion of magnetic field lines, a 'magnetic breathing' of the disc.

Subsequent observations carried out on 2009 June and July confirmed at least 11 distinct absorption components in both systems. Some components had deepened during the two months period while their HWHMs and wavelengths remained nearly constant. We suggest these high velocity components originate in cool clumpy gas clouds moving on the line of sight, produced in interactions between pre-existing cool circumstellar gas and high velocity gas ejected in the nova explosion. The optical region spectrum of V1280 Sco in 2009 is dominated by the continuum radiation and exhibits no forbidden line characterizing the nebular phase of typical novae. Permitted Fe II lines show doubly peaked emission profiles and some strong Fe II lines are accompanied by a blue shifted (about -255 km/s) absorption component. However, no high-velocity and narrow components corresponding to those of Na I could be detected in Fe II lines nor in the Balmer lines. The 255 km/s low velocity absorption component is most probably originating in the wind from the nova.

Chemical abundances of six extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-2.5) stars in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy are determined based on high resolution spectroscopy (R=40,000) with the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph. (1) The Fe abundances derived from the high resolution spectra are in good agreement with the metallicity estimated from the Ca triplet lines in low resolution spectra. The lack of stars with [Fe/H]=<-3 in Sextans, found by previous estimates from the Ca triplet, is confirmed by our measurements, although we note that high resolution spectroscopy for a larger sample of stars will be necessary to estimate the true fraction of stars with such low metallicity. (2) While one object shows an overabundance of Mg (similar to Galactic halo stars), the Mg/Fe ratios of the remaining five stars are similar to the solar value. This is the first time that low Mg/Fe ratios at such low metallicities have been found in a dwarf spheroidal galaxy. No evidence for over-abundances of Ca and Ti are found in these five stars, though the measurements for these elements are less certain. Possible mechanisms to produce low Mg/Fe ratios, with respect to that of Galactic halo stars, are discussed. (3) Ba is under-abundant in four objects, while the remaining two stars exhibit large and moderate excesses of this element. The abundance distribution of Ba in this galaxy is similar to that in the Galactic halo, indicating that the enrichment of heavy elements, probably by the r-process, started at metallicities [Fe/H] < -2.5, as found in the Galactic halo.

We present optical spectroscopic and photometric observations of Type Ia supernova (SN) 2006X from --10 to +91 days after the $B$-band maximum. This SN exhibits one of the highest expansion velocity ever published for SNe Ia. At premaximum phases, the spectra show strong and broad features of intermediate-mass elements such as Si, S, Ca, and Mg, while the O{\sc i}$λ$7773 line is weak. The extremely high velocities of Si{\sc ii} and S{\sc ii} lines and the weak O{\sc i} line suggest that an intense nucleosynthesis might take place in the outer layers, favoring a delayed detonation model. Interestingly, Si{\sc ii}$λ$5972 feature is quite shallow, resulting in an unusually low depth ratio of Si{\sc ii}$λ$5972 to $λ$6355, $\cal R$(Si{\sc ii}). The low $\cal R$(Si{\sc ii}) is usually interpreted as a high photospheric temperature. However, the weak Si{\sc iii}$λ$4560 line suggests a low temperature, in contradiction to the low $\cal R$(Si{\sc ii}). This could imply that the Si{\sc ii}$λ$5972 line might be contaminated by underlying emission. We propose that $\cal R$(Si{\sc ii}) may not be a good temperature indicator for rapidly expanding SNe Ia at premaximum phases.

We report detailed, long term near-infrared (NIR) light curves of GRS 1915+105 in 2007-2008, covering its long "soft state" for the first time. From our NIR monitoring and the X-ray data of the All Sky Monitor (ASM) onboard Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we discovered that the NIR flux dropped by > 1 mag during short X-ray flares with a time-scale of days. With the termination of the soft state, the H-Ks color reddened and the anti-correlation pattern was broken. The observed H-Ks color variation suggests that the dominant NIR source was an accretion disk during the soft state. The short X-ray flares during the soft state were associated with spectral hardening in X-rays and increasing radio emission indicating jet ejection. The temporal NIR fading during the X-ray flares, hence, implies a sudden decrease of the contribution of the accretion disk when the jet is ejected.

We estimate the abundances of CNO using the absorption lines on a spectrum at pre-maximum, and find over-abundances by [C/Fe] ~ 1.4, [N/Fe] > 2.0 and [O/Fe] ~ 1.1.

Tests of Einstein's general theory of relativity have mostly been carried out in weak gravitational fields where the space-time curvature effects are first-order deviations from Newton's theory. Binary pulsars provide a means of probing the strong gravitational field around a neutron star, but strong-field effects may be best tested in systems containing black holes. Here we report such a test in a close binary system of two candidate black holes in the quasar OJ287. This quasar shows quasi-periodic optical outbursts at 12 yr intervals, with two outburst peaks per interval. The latest outburst occurred in September 2007, within a day of the time predicted by the binary black-hole model and general relativity. The observations confirm the binary nature of the system and also provide evidence for the loss of orbital energy in agreement (within 10 per cent) with the emission of gravitational waves from the system. In the absence of gravitational wave emission the outburst would have happened twenty days later.

Such mid-plateau phases are observed in other two recurrent novae, U Sco and CI Aql, and are interpreted as a bright disk irradiated by the white dwarf. We have calculated theoretical light curves based on the optically thick wind theory and have reproduced the early decline, mid-plateau phase, and final decline. The final decline is identified with the end of steady hydrogen shell-burning, which turned out at about day 80. This turnoff date is consistent with the end of a supersoft X-ray phase observed with Swift. Our model suggests a white dwarf mass of 1.35 \pm 0.01 M_\sun, which indicates that RS Oph is a progenitor of Type Ia supernovae. We strongly recommend the y-filter observation of novae to detect both the presence of a disk and the hydrogen burning turnoff. Observational data of y magnitudes are provided here together with other multi-wavelength light curve data.

We report time-resolved CCD photometry of the cataclysmic variable EG Aquarii during the 2006 November outburst During the outburst, superhumps were unambiguously detected with a mean period of 0.078828(6) days, firstly classifying the object as an SU UMa-type dwarf nova. It also turned out that the outburst contained a precursor. At the end of the precursor, immature profiles of humps were observed. By a phase analysis of these humps, we interpreted the features as superhumps. This is the second example that the superhumps were shown during a precursor. Near the maximum stage of the outburst, we discovered an abrupt shift of the superhump period by ${\sim}$ 0.002 days. After the supermaximum, the superhump period decreased at the rate of $\dot{P}/P$=$-8.2{\times}10^{-5}$, which is typical for SU UMa-type dwarf novae. Although the outburst light curve was characteristic of SU UMa-type dwarf novae, long-term monitoring of the variable shows no outbursts over the past decade. We note on the basic properties of long period and inactive SU UMa-type dwarf novae.

Balmer and Paschen continuum emission as well as Balmer series lines of P Cygni-type profile from H_gamma through H_23 are revealed in the violet spectra of BM Gem, a carbon star associated with an oxygen-rich circumstellar shell (`silicate carbon star') observed with the high dispersion spectrograph (HDS) on the Subaru telescope. The blue-shifted absorption in the Balmer lines indicates the presence of an outflow, the line of sight velocity of which is at least 400 km s^-1, which is the highest outflow velocity observed to date in a carbon star. We argue that the observed unusual features in BM Gem are strong evidence for the presence of a companion, which should form an accretion disk that gives rise to both an ionized gas region and a high velocity, variable outflow. The estimated luminosity of ~0.2 (0.03-0.6) L_sun for the ionized gas can be maintained by a mass accretion rate to a dwarf companion of ~10^-8 M_sun yr^-1, while ~10^-10 M_sun yr^-1 is sufficient for accretion to a white dwarf companion. These accretion rates are feasible for some detached binary configurations on the basis of the Bond-Hoyle type accretion process. We concluded that the carbon star BM Gem is in a detached binary system with a companion of low mass and low luminosity. However, we are unable to determine whether this companion object is a dwarf or a white dwarf. The upper limits for binary separation are 210 AU and 930 AU for a dwarf and a white dwarf, respectively. We also note that the observed features of BM Gem mimic those of Mira (omi Cet), which may suggest actual similarities in their binary configurations and circumstellar structures.

Several SU UMa-type dwarf novae, in particular, WZ Sge-type stars tend to exhibit rebrightenings after superoutbursts. The rebrightening phenomenon is problematic for the disk instability theory of dwarf novae since it requires a large amount of remnant matter in the disk even after superoutbursts. Here, we report our optical and infrared observations during the first-ever outburst of a new dwarf nova, SDSS J102146.44+234926.3. During the outburst, we detected superhumps with a period of 0.056281 +/- 0.000015 d, which is typical for superhump periods in WZ Sge stars. In conjunction with the appearance of a long-lived rebrightening, we conclude that the object is a new member of WZ Sge stars. Our observations, furthermore, revealed infrared behaviors for the first time in the rebrightening phase of WZ Sge stars. We discovered prominent infrared superhumps. We calculate the color temperature of the infrared superhump source to be 4600-6400 K. These temperatures are too low to be explained with a fully-ionized disk appearing during dwarf nova outbursts. We also found a Ks-band excess over the hot disk component. These unprecedented infrared activities provide evidence for the presence of mass reservoir at the outermost part of the accretion disk. We propose that a moderately high mass-accretion rate at this infrared active region leads to the long-lived rebrightening observed in SDSS J102146.44+234926.3.

The Thorium abundance for the red giant COS82 in the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy is determined based on a high resolution spectrum. This is the first detection of actinides in an extra Galactic object. A detailed abundance pattern is determined for 12 other neutron-capture elements from the atomic number 39 to 68. These elements are significantly over-abundant with respect to other metals like Fe (> 1 dex) and their abundance pattern agrees well with those of the r-process-enhanced, very metal-poor stars known in the Galactic halo, while the metallicity of this object ([Fe/H] ~ -1.5) is much higher than these field stars ([Fe/H] ~ -3.0). The results indicate that the mechanism and the astrophysical site that are responsible for neutron-capture elements in COS82 is similar to that for field r-process-enhanced stars, while the condition of low mass star formation is quite different. An estimate of the age of this object based on the Th abundance ratio is discussed.

As part of the Dwarf galaxies Abundances and Radial-velocities Team (DART) program, we have measured the metallicities of a large sample of stars in four nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph's): Sculptor, Sextans, Fornax, and Carina. The low mean metal abundances and the presence of very old stellar populations in these galaxies have supported the view that they are fossils from the early universe. However, contrary to naive expectations, we find a significant lack of stars with metallicities below [Fe/H] ~ -3 dex in all four systems. This suggests that the gas that made up the stars in these systems had been uniformly enriched prior to their formation. Furthermore, the metal-poor tail of the dSph metallicity distribution is significantly different from that of the Galactic halo. These findings show that the progenitors of nearby dSph's appear to have been fundamentally different from the building blocks of the Milky Way, even at the earliest epochs.

As part of the DART project we have used the ESO/2.2m Wide Field Imager in conjunction with the VLT/FLAMES GIRAFFE spectrograph to study the detailed properties of the resolved stellar population of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy out to and beyond its tidal radius. We re-derived the structural parameters of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal using our wide field imaging covering the galaxy out to its tidal radius, and analysed the spatial distribution of the Fornax stars of different ages as selected from Colour-Magnitude Diagram analysis. We have obtained accurate velocities and metallicities from spectra in the CaII triplet wavelength region for 562 Red Giant Branch stars which have velocities consistent with membership in Fornax dwarf spheroidal. We have found evidence for the presence of at least three distinct stellar components: a young population (few 100 Myr old) concentrated in the centre of the galaxy, visible as a Main Sequence in the Colour-Magnitude Diagram; an intermediate age population (2-8 Gyr old); and an ancient population (> 10Gyr),which are distinguishable from each other kinematically, from the metallicity distribution and in the spatial distribution of stars found in the Colour-Magnitude Diagram. From our spectroscopic analysis we find that the ``metal rich'' stars ([Fe/H]> -1.3) show a less extended and more concentrated spatial distribution, and display a colder kinematics than the ``metal poor'' stars ([Fe/H<-1.3). There is tentative evidence that the ancient stellar population in the centre of Fornax does not exhibit equilibrium kinematics. This could be a sign of a relatively recent accretion of external material.

We report on detailed spectroscopic studies performed for the secondary star in the black hole binary (micro-quasar) V4641 Sgr in order to examine its surface chemical composition and to see if its surface shows any signature of pollution by ejecta from a supernova explosion. High-resolution spectra of V4641 Sgr observed in the quiescent state in the blue-visual region are compared with those of the two bright well-studied B9 stars (14 Cyg and $ν$ Cap) observed with the same instrument. The effective temperature of V4641 Sgr (10500 $\pm$ 200 K) is estimated from the strengths of He~{\sc i} lines, while its rotational velocity, $\it v$ sin $\it i$ (95 $\pm$ 10 km s${}^{-1}$), is estimated from the profile of the Mg~{\sc ii} line at 4481 Å. We obtain abundances of 10 elements and find definite over-abundances of N (by 0.8 dex or more) and Na (by 0.8 dex) in V4641 Sgr. From line-by-line comparisons of eight other elements (C, O, Mg, Al, Si, Ti, Cr, and Fe) between V4641 Sgr and the two reference stars, we conclude that there is no apparent difference in the abundances of these elements between V4641 Sgr and the two normal late B-type stars, which have been reported to have solar abundances. An evolutionary model of a massive close binary system has been constructed to explain the abundances observed in V4641 Sgr. The model suggests that the progenitor of the black hole forming supernova was as massive as ~ 35 Msun on the main-sequence and, after becoming a ~ 10 Msun He star, underwent "dark" explosion which ejected only N and Na-rich outer layer of the He star without radioactive $^{56}$Ni.

Seventeen stars, among which 16 are newly analyzed in the present work, were selected from candidate metal-poor stars identified in the HK survey of Beers and colleagues. The metallicity range covered by our sample is -3.1 ~< [Fe/H] ~< -2.4. The abundances of carbon, alpha-elements, and iron-peak elements determined for these stars confirm the trends found by previous work. One exception is the large over-abundance of Mg, Al and Sc found in BS16934--002, a giant with [Fe/H] = -2.8. By combining our new results with those of previous studies, we investigate the distribution of neutron-capture elements in very metal-poor stars, focusing on the production of the light neutron-capture elements (e.g., Sr, Y, and Zr).

With the HDS (High Dispersion Spectrograph) on the Subaru telescope, we obtained high resolution optical region spectra of three red giant stars (cos 4, cos 82, and cos 347) in the Ursa Minor dwarf spheriodal galaxy. Chemical abundances in these stars have been analysed for 26 elements including alpha-, iron-peak, and neutron capture elements. All three stars show low abundances of alpha-elements (Mg, Si, and Ca) and two stars (cos 82 and cos 347) show high abundance of Mn compared to Galactic halo stars of similar metallicity. One star (cos 4) has been confirmed to be very metal deficient ([Fe/H]=-2.7) and found to show anomalously low abundances of Mn, Cu, and Ba. In another star cos 82 ([Fe/H]=-1.5), we have found large excess of heavy neutron-capture elements with the general abundance pattern similar to the scaled solar system r-process abundance curve. These observational results are rather puzzling: low abundances of alpha-elements and high abundance of Mn seem to sugggest a significant contribution of SNe Ia at low metallicity, while there is no hint of s-process (i.e., AGB stars) contribution even at [Fe/H]=-1.5, suggesting a peculiar nucleosynthetic history of the UMi dSph galaxy.

We have found evidence for the presence of two distinct ancient stellar components (both geq 10 Gyr old) in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We used the ESO Wide Field Imager (WFI) in conjunction with the VLT/FLAMES spectrograph to study the properties of the resolved stellar population of Sculptor out to and beyond the tidal radius. We find that two components are discernible in the spatial distribution of Horizontal Branch stars in our imaging, and in the [Fe/H] and v_hel distributions for our large sample of spectroscopic measurements. They can be generally described as a ``metal-poor'' component ([Fe/H]< -1.7) and a ``metal-rich'' component ([Fe/H]> -1.7). The metal-poor stars are more spatially extended than the metal-rich stars, and they also appear to be kinematically distinct. These results provide an important insight into the formation processes of small systems in the early universe and the conditions found there. Even this simplest of galaxies appears to have had a surprisingly complex early evolution.

We present the abundance analyses for the neutron-capture elements, and discuss the observed abundance distributions in very metal-poor stars with excesses of r-process elements. As has been found by previous abundance studies, the star-to-star scatter in the abundances of neutron-capture elements are very large. The abundance patterns of the heavy neutron-capture elements (56 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 70) in seven objects with moderate to large excesses of the neutron-capture elements are similar to that of the solar system r-process component. These results strongly suggest that the heavy neutron-capture elements in these objects are primarily synthesized by the r-process. On the other hand, the abundance ratios of the light neutron-capture elements (38 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 46) exhibit a rather large dispersion. Our inspection of the correlation between Sr and Ba abundances in very metal-poor stars reveals that the dispersion of the Sr abundances clearly decreases with increasing Ba abundance. This results support previous suggestions that the light neutron-capture elements are likely to have been produced in different astrophysical sites from those associated with the production of the heavier ones. The Th/Eu abundance ratios (log(Th/Eu)) measured for the seven r-process-enhanced stars range from -0.10 to -0.59. Since these very metal-poor stars are believed to be formed in the early Galaxy, this result means that a small dispersion appears in the abundance ratios between Th and rare-earth elements, such as Eu, in very metal-poor stars. In order to apply the Th/Eu ratios to estimates of stellar ages, further understanding for the Th production by the r-process nucleosynthesis is required.

The spectra cover the wavelength range from 3500 to 5100 Å; equivalent widths are measured for isolated lines of numerous elemental species, including the $α$ elements, the iron-peak elements, and the light and heavy neutron-capture elements. Errors in the measurements and comparisons with previous studies are discussed. These data will be used to perform detailed abundance analyses in the following papers of this series. Radial velocities are also reported, and are compared with previous studies. At least one moderately r-process-enhanced metal-poor star, HD 186478, exhibits evidence of a small-amplitude radial velocity variation, confirming the binary status noted previously. During the course of this initial program, we have discovered a new moderately r-process-enhanced, very metal-poor star, CS 30306-132 ([Fe/H] $= -2.4$; [Eu/Fe] $= +0.85$), which is discussed in detail in the companion paper.

We have obtained a high resolution (R~90,000) spectrum of the carbon- and s-process-element-rich, very metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-2.7) subgiant LP625-44, as well as that of HD140283 (a metal-poor subgiant with normal abundance ratio) for comparison, with the High Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS) for the Subaru Telescope for detailed abundance study. The oxygen abundance derived from the O I triplet around 7770A is uncertain, but the excess of oxygen in LP625-44 seems remarkable (perhaps by nearly a factor 10), in comparison with that of HD140283 derived from the same lines. The Na enhancement in LP625-44 is by about a factor 50, suggesting hydrogen burning in the 22Ne-rich layer in an asymptotic giant branch star which produces the abundance pattern of this object. In our new spectrum of LP625-44, the Pb I lambda 3683A line has been detected, as well as the Pb I lambda 4057A line which has already been studied, confirming the Pb abundance (log epsilon(Pb)~1.9) derived by the previous work. The abundance ratio of s-process elements at the second peak (e.g., La, Ce and Nd) to that at the third peak (Pb) in LP 625-44 is significantly higher (by a factor 5) than that in other three s-process element-rich objects recently studied by van Eck et al.. Recent theoretical works have modeled the s-process nucleosynthesis in the radiative layer of asymptotic giant branch stars in the inter-pulse phase, and the above results means that these processes produced a large scatter in the abundance ratios. Another possiblity is that different processes (e.g., s-process nucleosynthesis during thermal pulses) have contributed to heavy elements in the early Galaxy.

Double-peaked emission lines of He\textsc{II} at 4686 Å, which were absent on July 23, emerged on July 24 together with emission lines of C\textsc{III} / N\textsc{III} Bowen blend. Analyses of the He\textsc{II} emission lines using the Doppler tomography revealed an asymmetric spiral structure on the accretion disk. This finding demonstrates that spiral shocks with a very short orbital period can arise during the initial stage of an outburst and may be present in all SU UMa stars.

(1981). NLTE effects in S abundances are found to be small and practically negligible. The behavior of [S/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] exhibits a linear increasing trend without plateau with decreasing [Fe/H]. Combining our results with those available in the literature, we find that the slope of the increasing trend is -0.25 in the NLTE behavior of [S/Fe], which is comparable to that observed in [O/Fe]. The observed behavior of S may require chemical evolution models of the Galaxy, in which scenarios of hypernovae nucleosynthesis and/or time-delayed deposition into interstellar medium are incorporated.

Light variation of the 47 AGB star candidates in the outer Galactic disk has been monitored at I-band for 5 years. Periods were determined well for 18 of them and less reliably for the other 25. The average period of the objects is then 500 days. According to the period-luminosity relation, the mean luminosity of the sample stars is 10000 $\LO$. Based on the absolute luminosity derived from the period-luminosity relation and the apparent luminosity from the observation, the distances to the objects are determined. The distances calculated are slightly greater than those obtained previously on the assumption of constant luminosity of 8000 $\LO$. In addition, SiO maser emission was detected for most of the observed objects so that their radial velocities were known accurately. With the assumption of circular rotation in the Galactic disk, the rotation curve and Oort's constants were derived.
