The magnetic properties of Ho-doped langasites (La:Ho)$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$ are dominated by the Ising-like magnetic moments of the Ho$^{3+}$ ions. In their saturated regime, the induced magnetic state breaks both time and space inversion symmetries, leading to a novel linear magnetoelectric effect. However, due to distortions induced by a shared Ga/Si occupancy of the 2d sites, resolving the microscopic nature of the magnetic configuration remains a difficult task. Here we combine polarized neutron diffraction and angular dependent magnetization experiments to determine the local distortions of the Ho$^{3+}$ magnetic moments in doped langasites (La$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$)$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$ with $x \approx 0.015$ and $x \approx 0.045$. We propose a model for a field-induced magnetic configuration with arbitrary orientations of the local Ising axis of Ho$^{3+}$ in distorted positions. The operations of broken local $C_2$ symmetry and rotations around the trigonal $C_3$ axis connect different sites, restoring the global P321 symmetry of the crystal and simplifying the description of the magnetic properties. The superposition of two distorted Ho$^{3+}$ positions connected by $C_2$ symmetry determines the local magnetic susceptibility tensor, which no longer appears Ising-like at low fields.

The possibilities of combining several degrees of freedom inside a unique material have recently been highlighted in their dynamics and proposed as information carriers in quantum devices where their cross-manipulation by external parameters such as electric and magnetic fields could enhance their functionalities. An emblematic example is that of electromagnons, spin-waves dressed with electric dipoles, that are fingerprints of multiferroics. Point-like objects have also been identified, which may take the form of excited quasiparticles. This is the case for magnetic monopoles, the exotic excitations of spin ices, that have been recently proposed to carry an electric dipole although experimental evidences remain elusive. Presently, we investigate the electrical signature of a classical spin ice and a related compound that supports quantum fluctuations. Our in-depth study clearly attributes magnetoelectricity to the correlated spin ice phase distinguishing it from extrinsic and single-ion effects. Our calculations show that the proposed model conferring magnetoelectricity to monopoles is not sufficient, calling for higher order contributions.

Geometrical frustration, as in pyrochlore lattices made of corner-sharing tetrahedra, precludes the onset of conventional magnetic ordering, enabling the stabilization of fluctuating spin states at low temperature. Disorder is a subtle ingredient that can modify the nature of these exotic non-ordered phases. Here, we study the interplay between disorder and magnetic frustration in the new pyrochlore Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$ where the non magnetic site presents a charge disorder Nb$^{5+}$/Sc$^{3+}$. Its quantification with sophisticated diffraction techniques (electrons, X-rays, neutrons) allows us to estimate the distribution of the splitting of the magnetic Tb$^{3+}$ non-Kramers ground state doublets and to compare it with excitations measured in inelastic neutron scattering. Combining macroscopic and neutron scattering measurements, we show that a clear spin glass transition at 1 K stems out while retaining strong spin liquid correlations. Our results suggest that Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$ stabilizes one of the novel disorder induced quantum spin liquid or topological glassy phases recently proposed theoretically.

While the spin liquid state in the frustrated pyrochlore Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ has been studied both experimentally and theoretically for more than two decades, no definite description of this unconventional state has been achieved. Using synchrotron based THz spectroscopy in combination with quantum numerical simulations, we highlight a significant link between two previously unrelated features: the existence of a quadrupolar order following an ice rule and the presence of strong magneto-elastic coupling in the form of hybridized Tb$^{3+}$ crystal-field and phonon modes. The magnitude of this so-called vibronic process, which involves quadrupolar degrees of freedom, is significantly dependent on small off-stoichiometry $x$ and favors all-in all-out like correlations between quadrupoles. This mechanism competes with the long range ordered quadrupolar ice, and for slightly different stoichiometry, is able to destabilize it.

This result has opened a conceptual approach, where the CDW gap in (TaSe4)2I is opened between Weyl fermions of opposite chirality with the assumption that this compound is a Weyl semi-metal in its undistorted high temperature phase. We report measurements in the sliding state of (TaSe4)2I performed in similar conditions. We have found no increase in the magnetoconductivity. In our attempts for understanding this unsettling discrepancy, we stress the specific nature of the Peierls transition in (TaSe4)2I and the strong electron-phonon coupling present in this compound. Given the lack of further evidence, we think that it is premature to assert that (TaSe4)2I is an axionic insulator.

Here, we focus on the aspect of vibronic coupling, which occurs between the Tb3+ electronic levels and transverse acoustic phonons, by studying their dependence on a magnetic field applied along the cubic h111i direction. Our experimental THz spectroscopy measurements, combined with quantitative theoretical quantum calculations, show that indeed vibronic effects are observed at 3 K. An analysis incorporating quadrupolar spin-lattice effects in the Hamiltonian is therefore relevant in this compound, which is no longer optically isotropic but magnetically birefringent.

The measured residual entropy is that of a hard core dimer liquid, as predicted. Inclusion of Coulomb interactions allows for a quantitative description of both the thermodynamic data and the magnetisation dynamics, with the energy scale given by deconfined defects in the emergent ionic crystal. Our data reveal low energy excitations, as well as a large distribution of energy barriers down to low temperatures, while the magnetic response to an applied field suggests that domain wall pinning is important; results that call for further theoretical modelling.

Crystal-field (CF) effects on the rare-earth (RE) ions in ferrimagnetic intermetallics NdCo$_5$ and TbCo$_5$ are evaluated using an ab initio density functional + dynamical mean-field theory approach in conjunction with a quasi-atomic approximation for on-site electronic correlations on the localized 4$f$ shell. The study reveals an important role of the high-order sectoral harmonic component of the CF in the magnetism of RECo$_5$ intermetallics. An unexpectedly large value is computed in the both systems for the corresponding crystal-field parameter (CFP) $A_6^6 \langle r^6 \rangle$, far beyond what one would expect from only electrostatic contributions. It allows solving the enigma of the non-saturation of zero-temperature Nd magnetic moments in NdCo$_5$ along its easy axis in the Co exchange field. This unsaturated state had been previously found out from magnetization distribution probed by polarised neutron elastic scattering but had so far remained theoretically unexplained. The easy plane magnetic anisotropy of Nd in NdCo$_5$ is strongly enhanced by the large value of $A_6^6\langle r^6 \rangle$. Counter-intuitively, the polar dependence of anisotropy energy within the easy plane remains rather small. The easy plane magnetic anisotropy of Nd is reinforced up to high temperatures, which is explained through $J$-mixing effects. The calculated ab initio anisotropy constants of NdCo$_5$ and their temperature dependence are in quantitative agreement with experiment. Unlike NdCo$_5$, the $A_6^6 \langle r^6 \rangle$ CFP has negligible effects on the Tb magnetism in TbCo$_5$ suggesting that its impact on the RE magnetism is ion-specific across the RECo$_5$ series. The origin of its large value is the hybridization of RE and Co states in a hexagonally coordinated local environment of the RE ion in RECo$_5$ intermetallics.

The research field of magnetic frustration is dominated by triangle-based lattices but exotic phenomena can also be observed in pentagonal networks. A peculiar noncollinear magnetic order is indeed known to be stabilized in Bi2Fe4O9 materializing a Cairo pentagonal lattice. We present the spin wave excitations in the magnetically ordered state, obtained by inelastic neutron scattering. They reveal an unconventional excited state related to local precession of pairs of spins. The magnetic excitations are then modeled to determine the superexchange interactions for which the frustration is indeed at the origin of the spin arrangement. This analysis unveils a hierarchy in the interactions, leading to a paramagnetic state (close to the Néel temperature) constituted of strongly coupled dimers separated by much less correlated spins. This produces two types of response to an applied magnetic field associated with the two nonequivalent Fe sites, as observed in the magnetization distributions obtained using polarized neutrons.

While the Mn order sets in first below 80 K, a spin reorientation occurs below 37 K, a rare feature in the rare earth manganites. We show that severalHo crystal field excitations are present in the same energy range as the magnons, and that they are all affected by the spin reorientation. Moreover, several anomalous features are observed in the excitations at low temperature. Our analysis and calculations for the Mn spin waves and Ho crystal field excitations support Mn-Ho coupling mechanisms as well as coupling to the lattice affecting the dynamics.

The quantum properties of their states provide new potentialities for quantum information, quantum contextuality, expressions of geometric phases, facets of quantum entanglement and many other foundational aspects of the quantum world, which are unapproachable with qubits. We here experimentally investigate the quantum dynamics of a qudit (d = 4) that consists of a single 3/2 nuclear spin embedded in a molecular magnet transistor geometry, coherently driven by a microwave electric field. We propose and implement three protocols based on a generalization of the Ramsey interferometry to a multilevel system. First, the standard Ramsey interference is used to measure the accumulation of geometric phases. Then, two distinct transitions of the nuclear spin are addressed to measure the phase of an iSWAP quantum gate. Finally, through a succession of two Hadamard gates, the coherence time of a 3-state superposition is measured.

We report the direct observation of a magnetic-feld induced long-wavelength spin spiral modulation in the chiral compound Ba3TaFe3Si2O14. This new spin texture emerges out of a chiral helical ground state, and is hallmarked by the onset of a unique contribution to the bulk electric polarization, the sign of which depends on the crystal chirality. The periodicity of the feld induced modulation, several hundreds of nm depending on the field value, is comparable to the length scales of mesoscopic topological defects such as skyrmions, merons and solitons. The phase transition and observed threshold behavior are consistent with a phenomenology based on the allowed Lifshitz invariants for the chiral symmetry of langasite, which intriguingly contain all the ingredients for the possible realization of topologically stable antiferromagnetic skyrmions.

The influence of a staggered molecular field in frustrated rare-earth pyrochlores, produced via the magnetic iridium occupying the transition metal site, can generate exotic ground states, such as the fragmentation of the magnetization in the Ho compound. At variance with the Ising Ho$^{3+}$ moment, we focus on the behavior of the quasi isotropic magnetic moment of the Gd$^{3+}$ ion at the rare-earth site. By means of macroscopic measurements and neutron scattering, we find a complex situation where different components of the magnetic moment contribute to two antiferromagnetic non-collinear arrangements: a high temperature all in - all out order induced by the Ir molecular field, and Palmer and Chalker correlations that tend to order at much lower temperatures. This is enabled by the anisotropic nature of the Gd-Gd interactions and requires a weak easy-plane anisotropy of the Gd$^{3+}$ moment due to the mixing of the ground state with multiplets of higher spectral terms.

Quantum algorithms use the principles of quantum mechanics, as for example quantum superposition, in order to solve particular problems outperforming standard computation. They are developed for cryptography, searching, optimisation, simulation and solving large systems of linear equations. Here, we implement Grover's quantum algorithm, proposed to find an element in an unsorted list, using a single nuclear 3/2-spin carried by a Single Molecular Magnet (SMM) transistor. The coherent manipulation of this multi-level qudit is achieved by means of electric fields only. Grover's search algorithm was implemented by constructing a quantum database via a multi-level Hadamard gate. The Grover sequence then allows us to select each state. The presented method is of universal character and can be implemented in any multi-level quantum system with non-equal spaced energy levels, opening the way to novel quantum search algorithms.

The dependence of the scattering intensity on X-ray polarization and azimuthal angle indicate that the odd harmonics are dominated by the out-of-plane ($\mathbf{\hat{c}}$-axis) magnetic dipole while the $(0,0,2τ)$ originates from the electron density distortions accompanying magnetic order. We observe dissimilar energy dependences of the diffraction intensity of the purely magnetic odd-harmonic satellites at the Fe $L_3$ edge. Utilizing first-principles calculations, we show that this is a consequence of the loss of threefold crystal symmetry in the multiferroic phase.

The complexity embedded in condensed matter fertilizes the discovery of new states of matter, enriched by ingredients like frustration. Illustrating examples in magnetic systems are Kitaev spin liquids, skyrmions phases, or spin ices. These unconventional ground states support exotic excitations, for example the magnetic charges in spin ices, also called monopoles. Beyond their discovery, an important challenge is to be able to control and manipulate them. Here, we propose a new mechanism to inject monopoles in a spin ice through a staggered magnetic field. We show theoretically, and demonstrate experimentally in the Ho$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore iridate, that it results in the stabilization of a monopole crystal, which exhibits magnetic fragmentation. In this new state of matter, the magnetic moment fragments into an ordered part and a persistently fluctuating one. Compared to conventional spin ices, the different nature of the excitations in this fragmented state opens the way to novel tunable field-induced and dynamical behaviors.

The origin of quantum fluctuations responsible for the spin liquid state in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ has remained a long standing problem. By synchrotron-based terahertz measurements, we show evidence of strong coupling between the magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom that provides a path to the quantum melting process. As revealed by hybrid crystal electric field-phonon excitations that appear at 0.67 THz below 200 K, and around 0.42 THz below 50 K, the double vibronic process is unique for Tb$^{3+}$ in the titanate family due to adequate energy matching and strong quadrupolar moments. The results suggest that lattice motion can indeed be the driving force behind spin flips within the hybridized ground and first excited states, promoting quantum terms in the effective Hamiltonian that describes Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$.

We have studied the magnetic properties of Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, which features a honeycomb lattice of magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ions, through macroscopic characterization and neutron diffraction on a powder sample. We have shown that this material orders in a zig-zag antiferromagnetic structure. In addition to allowing a linear magnetoelectric coupling, this magnetic arrangement displays very peculiar spatial magnetic correlations, larger in the honeycomb planes than between the planes, which do not evolve with the temperature. We have investigated this behavior by Monte Carlo calculations using the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ model on a honeycomb lattice with a small interplane interaction. Our model reproduces the experimental neutron structure factor, although its absence of temperature evolution must be due to additional ingredients, such as chemical disorder or quantum fluctuations enhanced by the proximity to a phase boundary.

We report neutron scattering measurements for the multichiral Ba3MFe3Si2O14 (M = Nb, Ta) langasites revealing new important features of the magnetic order of these systems: the bunching of the helical modulation along the c-axis and the in-plane distortion of the 120{\textdegree} Fe-spin arrangement. We discuss these subtle features in terms of the microscopic spin Hamiltonian, and provide the link to the magnetically-induced electric polarization observed in these systems. Thus, our findings put the multiferroicity of this attractive family of materials on solid ground.

We report our investigation of the electronic and magnetic excitations of Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$ by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ir L$_3$ edge. The intra-$t_{2g}$ electronic transitions are analyzed using an atomic model, including spin-orbit coupling and trigonal distortion of the IrO$_6$ octahedron, confronted to {\it ab initio} quantum chemistry calculations. The Ir spin-orbital entanglement is quantified and its implication on the magnetic properties, in particular in inducing highly anisotropic magnetic interactions, is highlighted. These are included in the spin-wave model proposed to account for the dispersionless magnetic excitation that we observe at 90 meV. By counterbalancing the strong Ni$^{2+}$ easy-plane anisotropy that manifests itself at high temperature, the anisotropy of the interactions finally leads to the remarkable easy-axis magnetism reported in this material at low temperature.

The magnetic behavior of polycrystalline samples of Er$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Tb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlores is studied by magnetization measurements and neutron diffraction. Both compounds undergo a magnetic transition at 140 and 130 K respectively, associated with an ordering of the Ir sublattice, signaled by thermomagnetic hysteresis. In Tb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, we show that the Ir molecular field leads the Tb magnetic moments to order below 40 K in the all-in/all-out magnetic arrangement. No sign of magnetic long range order on the Er sublattice is evidenced in Er$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ down to 0.6 K where a spin freezing is detected. These contrasting behaviors result from the competition between the Ir molecular field and the different single-ion anisotropy of the rare-earths on which it is acting. Additionally, this strongly supports the all-in/all-out iridium magnetic order.

These measurements evidence the presence of an easy axis of anisotropy and two anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility. Neutron powder diffraction realized on a polycrystalline sample reveals the emergence of magnetic reflections below 75 K with magnetic propagation vector k ~ (0, 0, 1), undetected in previous neutron studies [T.N. Nguyen and H.-C zur Loye, J. Solid State Chem., 117, 300 (1995)]. The nature of the magnetic ground state, and the presence of two anomalies common to this family of material, are discussed on the basis of the results obtained by neutron diffraction, magnetization measurements, and symmetry arguments.

From these complementary techniques, we have determined the magnon and crystal field spectra and identified a zone center magnon only excitable by the electric field of an electromagnetic wave. Using comparison with the isostructural YMnO3 compound and crystal field calculations, we propose that this dynamical magnetoelectric process is due to the hybridization of a magnon with an electro-active crystal field transition.

We show that the dynamic magnetic susceptibility and the superparamagnetic blocking temperature of an Fe8 single molecule magnet oscillate as a function of the magnetic field Hx applied along its hard magnetic axis. These oscillations are associated with quantum interferences, tuned by Hx, between different spin tunneling paths linking two excited magnetic states. The oscillation period is determined by the quantum mixing between the ground S=10 and excited multiplets. These experiments enable us to quantify such mixing. We find that the weight of excited multiplets in the magnetic ground state of Fe8 amounts to approximately 11.6%.

In all these materials, the magnetic FeII ions with a strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy form a distorted kagome lattice, topologically equivalent to a perfect kagome one if nearest-neighbor interactions only are considered. All the compounds order at low temperature in an antiferromagnetic arrangement with magnetic moments at 120°. A remarkable magnetic behavior emerges below the Néel temperature in three compounds (with inter-kagome-layer Zr, Sn, Fe but not with Al): the spin anisotropy combined with a low exchange path network connectivity lead to domain walls intersecting the kagome planes through strings of free spins. These produce an unfamiliar slow spin dynamics in the ordered phase observed by AC susceptibility, evolving from exchange-released spin-flips towards a cooperative behavior on decreasing the temperature.

A modulated component of the moments along the c-axis is present, adding to the previously proposed helical magnetic configuration of co-planar moments in the a,b-plane. This leads to a helical-butterfly structure and suggests that both the multi-axial in-plane and the uniform out-of-plane Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya vectors are relevant. A non zero orbital magnetic signal is also observed at the oxygen K edge, which reflects the surprisingly strong hybridization between iron 3d and oxygen 2p states, given the nominal spherical symmetry of the Fe3+ half filled shell.

The hole-doped kagome lattice of Cu2+ ions in LaCuO2.66 was investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), electron spin resonance (ESR), electrical resistivity, bulk magnetization and specific heat measurements. For temperatures above ~180 K, the spin and charge properties show an activated behavior suggestive of a narrow-gap semiconductor. At lower temperatures, the results indicate an insulating ground state which may or may not be charge ordered. While the frustrated spins in remaining patches of the original kagome lattice might not be directly detected here, the observation of coexisting non-magnetic sites, free spins and frozen moments reveals an intrinsically inhomogeneous magnetism. Numerical simulations of a 1/3-diluted kagome lattice rationalize this magnetic state in terms of a heterogeneous distribution of cluster sizes and morphologies near the site-percolation threshold.

The second one persits far into the paramagnetic phase and exhibits both an electric and a magnetic activity at slightly different energies. This magnetoelectric excitation is interpreted in terms of atomic rotations and requires a helical electric polarization.

MnPS3 undergoes a transition toward a collinear antiferromagnetic order at 78 K. The resulting magnetic point-group breaks both the time reversal and the space inversion thus allowing a linear magnetoelectric coupling. Neutron polarimetry was subsequently used to prove that this coupling provides a way to manipulate the antiferromagnetic domains simply by cooling the sample under crossed magnetic and electrical fields, in agreement with the nondiagonal form of the magnetoelectric tensor. In addition, this tensor has, in principle, an antisymmetric part that results in a toroidic moment and provides with a pure ferrotoroidic compound.

We report a detailed study of structural and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore-type (Bi2-xPrx)Ru2O7 series. Eleven compositions with 0 <= x <= 2 were prepared by solid state reaction at 1050 degrees C and found to form a solid solution in the whole range of compositions. Structural refinements from X-ray powder diffraction data by the Rietveld method show that the main variation concerns the ruthenium site. Ru-O distances increase and the Ru-O-Ru angle (bridging corner-sharing Ru-O octahedra) decreases with increasing praseodymium content, in agreement with the metal-semiconductor transition observed previously in this system. Magnetic measurements show that the metallic Pauli paramagnetism of Ru in Bi2Ru2O7 evolves to a magnetism of localized low spin moments coexisting with the magnetism of Pr3+ cations moments. Strong magnetic correlations are present at high Pr content, as illustrated by a Néel temperature of -224 K for Pr2Ru2O7. However no evidence of a magnetic ordering was found, suggesting that the end compound Pr2Ru2O7 of the series might stabilize a spin liquid phase.

Magnetic measurements show the absence of ordering down to 2 K, in agreement with the presence of strong geometric frustration in the lanthanide sublattice. The europium phase shows a peculiar magnetic behaviour; its magnetic susceptibility becomes constant below ca 50 K. This feature confirms the behaviour observed previously on Eu2Ti2O7 and is ascribed to crystal field effects.

A novel doubly chiral magnetic order is found out in the structurally chiral langasite compound Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$. The magnetic moments are distributed over planar frustrated triangular lattices of triangle units. On each of these they form the same triangular configuration. This ferro-chiral arrangement is helically modulated from plane to plane. Unpolarized neutron scattering on a single crystal associated with spherical neutron polarimetry proved that a single triangular chirality together with a single helicity is stabilized in an enantiopure crystal. A mean field analysis allows discerning the relevance on this selection of a twist in the plane to plane supersuperexchange paths.

We investigate the classical spin dynamics of the kagome antiferromagnet by combining Monte Carlo and spin dynamics simulations. We show that this model has two distinct low temperature dynamical regimes, both sustaining propagative modes. The expected gauge invariance type of the low energy low temperature out of plane excitations is also evidenced in the non linear regime. A detailed analysis of the excitations allows to identify ghosts in the dynamical structure factor, i.e propagating excitations with a strongly reduced spectral weight. We argue that these dynamical extinction rules are of geometrical origin.

The static and dynamic magnetic properties of the Nd$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$ compound, which appears as the first materialization of a rare-earth kagome-type lattice, were re-examined, owing to contradictory results in the previous studies. Neutron scattering, magnetization and specific heat measurements were performed and analyzed, in particular by fully taking account of the crystal electric field effects on the Nd$^{3+}$ ions. One of the novel findings is that the peculiar temperature independent spin dynamics observed below 10 K expresses single-ion quantum processes. This would short-circuit the frustration induced cooperative dynamics, which would emerge only at very low temperature.

Using magnetization, specific heat and neutron scattering measurements, as well as exact calculations on realistic models, the magnetic properties of the \lacuvo compound are characterized on a wide temperature range. At high temperature, this oxide is well described by strongly correlated atomic $S$=1/2 spins while decreasing the temperature it switches to a set of weakly interacting and randomly distributed entangled pseudo spins $\tilde S=1/2$ and $\tilde S=0$. These pseudo-spins are built over frustrated clusters, similar to the kagomé building block, at the vertices of a triangular superlattice, the geometrical frustration intervening then at different scales.

The Nd-langasite compound contains planes of magnetic Nd3+ ions on a lattice topologically equivalent to a kagomé net. The magnetic susceptibility does not reveal any signature of long-range ordering down to 2 K but rather a correlated paramagnetism with significant antiferromagnetic interactions between the Nd and a single-ion anisotropy due to crystal field effect. Inelastic neutron scattering on Nd-langasite powder and single-crystal allowed to probe its very peculiar low temperature dynamical magnetic correlations. They present unusual dispersive features and are broadly localized in wave-vector Q revealing a structure factor associated to characteristics short range-correlations between the magnetic atoms. From comparison with theoretical calculations, these results are interpreted as a possible experimental observation of a spin liquid state in an anisotropic kagomé antiferromagnet.

Powder samples and single crystals with R = Nd and Pr were prepared and magnetostatic measurements were performed under magnetic field up to 10 T in the temperature range from 1.6 K to 400 K. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility at the high temperatures where only the quadrupolar term of the crystal electric field prevails, suggests that the Nd and Pr magnetic moments can be modeled as coplanar elliptic rotators perpendicular to the three fold axis of the crystal structure that interact antiferromagnetically. Nonetheless, a disordered phase that can be ascribed to geometric frustration persists down to the lowest temperature which is about 25 times smaller than the energy scale for the exchange interactions.

A new model of localized highly frustrated ferromagnetism is presented: kagome spin ice. By use of analytical and Monte Carlo calculations its massive groundstate entropy is evaluated. Monte Carlo calculations are also used to explore the phases in the presence of further-neighbor interactions and applied fields. The importance of thermal spin fluctuations and their ability to stabilize a variety of magnetic structures is clearly manifested. Remarkably, some of these phases are only partially ordered and present both disordered and ordered sublattices.
