Silicon-Germanium heterostructures are a promising quantum circuit platform, but crucial aspects as the long-term charge dynamics and cooldown-to-cooldown variations are still widely unexplored quantitatively. In this letter we present the results of an extensive bias cooling study performed on gated silicon-germanium quantum dots with an Al2O3-dielectric. Over 80 cooldowns were performed in the course of our investigations. The performance of the devices is assessed by low-frequency charge noise measurements in the band of 200 micro Hertz to 10 milli Hertz. We measure the total noise power as a function of the applied voltage during cooldown in four different devices and find a minimum in noise at 0.7V bias cooling voltage for all observed samples. We manage to decrease the total noise power median by a factor of 6 and compute a reduced tunneling current density using Schrödinger-Poisson simulations. Furthermore, we show the variation in noise from the same device in the course of eleven different cooldowns performed under the nominally same conditions.

Determining the state of a qubit on a timescale much shorter than its relaxation time is an essential requirement for quantum information processing. With the aid of a new type of non-degenerate parametric amplifier, we demonstrate the continuous detection of quantum jumps of a transmon qubit with 90% fidelity in state discrimination. Entirely fabricated with standard two-step optical lithography techniques, this type of parametric amplifier consists of a dispersion engineered Josephson junction (JJ) array. By using long arrays, containing $10^3$ JJs, we can obtain amplification at multiple eigenmodes with frequencies below $10~\mathrm{GHz}$, which is the typical range for qubit readout. Moreover, by introducing a moderate flux tunability of each mode, employing superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) junctions, a single amplifier device could potentially cover the entire frequency band between 1 and $10~\mathrm{GHz}$.

Out of equilibrium quasiparticles (QPs) are one of the main sources of decoherence in superconducting quantum circuits, and are particularly detrimental in devices with high kinetic inductance, such as high impedance resonators, qubits, and detectors. Despite significant progress in the understanding of QP dynamics, pinpointing their origin and decreasing their density remain outstanding tasks. The cyclic process of recombination and generation of QPs implies the exchange of phonons between the superconducting thin film and the underlying substrate. Reducing the number of substrate phonons with frequencies exceeding the spectral gap of the superconductor should result in a reduction of QPs. Indeed, we demonstrate that surrounding high impedance resonators made of granular aluminum (grAl) with lower gapped thin film aluminum islands increases the internal quality factors of the resonators in the single photon regime, suppresses the noise, and reduces the rate of observed QP bursts. The aluminum islands are positioned far enough from the resonators to be electromagnetically decoupled, thus not changing the resonator frequency, nor the loading. We therefore attribute the improvements observed in grAl resonators to phonon trapping at frequencies close to the spectral gap of aluminum, well below the grAl gap.

A new parameterized model for the ablation phenomena is presented. The model describes the three different regimes usually observed, as a function of the laser fluence. The first one corresponds to a vaporization; it takes place at low fluence and it is well described by a typical Arrhenius expression, dependent on the vaporization energy Ev, of the solid. The true ablation regime, depends on the energy density Ed, of the material, and appears at high laser energy, after reaching threshold fluence. The transition region, that connects both processes, is mainly governed by the structure of the crystal, which determines the threshold fluence necessary to initiate the ablation regime. The model accounts for the link between the vaporization and ablation regimes and provides new insight into the ablation phenomena from the point of view of the structure of the material.

The distribution of money is analysed in connection with the Boltzmann distribution of energy in the degenerate states of molecules. Plots of the population density of income distribution for various countries are well reproduced by a Gamma function, confirming the validity of the statistical distribution at equilibrium. The equilibrium state is reached through pair wise money transference processes, independently of the shape of the initial distribution and also of the detailed nature of the money transactions between the economic agents.
