The Ce(1-x)LaxCrGe3 (x = 0, 0.19, 0.43, 0.58 and 1) intermetallic compound system has been investigated by magnetization measurements and neutron scattering techniques to determine the effect of La-doping on the magnetic ordering and exchange interaction between Cr ions. The structural and magnetic characterization in this series was first verified by X-ray diffraction and bulk magnetization measurements. The samples exhibit the known hexagonal perovskite structure (P63/mmc space group) and have a single magnetic phase according to magnetization measurements. In this work, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature for Cr evolves smoothly from a range of 68 K to 77 K for CeCrGe3 to a range of 91 K to 96 K for LaCrGe3 as La replaces Ce. Magnetization results indicate the formation of domain walls below the transition temperature for all the Ce(1-x)LaxCrGe3 systems investigated. Neutron results indicate ordered magnetic Cr moments aligned along the c axis for the x = 1 LaCrGe3 system, as well as for x = 0.19, 0.43, and 0.58, which contrasts with the x = 0 CeCrGe3 where the moments order in the ab plane.

We have performed X-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, electrical resistivity, heat capacity and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to investigate the physical properties of the intermetallic series of compounds CeCuBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_{x}$. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space group $P4/nmm$ and present antiferromagnetic transition temperatures ranging from 3.6 K to 16 K. Remarkably, the magnetization easy axis changes along the series, which is closely related to the variations of the tetragonal crystalline electric field (CEF) parameters. This evolution was analyzed using a mean field model, which included anisotropic nearest-neighbor interactions and the tetragonal CEF Hamiltonian. The CEF parameters were obtained by fitting the magnetic susceptibility data with the constraints given by the INS measurements. Finally, we discuss how this CEF evolution can affect the Kondo physics and the search for a superconducting state in this family.

We report the electronic and magnetic properties of stoichiometric CeAuBi$_{2}$ single crystals. Neutron diffraction experiments revealed an antiferromagnetic propagation vector $\hatτ = [0, 0, 1/2]$, which doubles the paramagnetic unit cell along the $c$-axis. At low temperatures several metamagnetic transitions are induced by the application of fields parallel to the $c$-axis, suggesting that the magnetic structure of CeAuBi$_{2}$ changes as a function of field. At low temperatures, a linear positive magnetoresistance may indicate the presence of band crossings near the Fermi level. Finally, the application of external pressure favors the antiferromagnetic state, indicating that the 4$f$ electrons become more localized.

The non-centrosymmetric Weyl semimetal candidate, MoTe$_2$ was investigated through neutron diffraction and transport measurements at pressures up to 1.5 GPa and at temperatures down to 40 mK. Centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric structural phases were found to coexist in the superconducting state. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the strength of the electron-phonon coupling is similar for both crystal structures. Furthermore, it was found that by controlling non-hydrostatic components of stress, it is possible to mechanically control the ground state crystal structure. This allows for the tuning of crystal symmetry in the superconducting phase from centrosymmetric to non-centrosymmetric. DFT calculations support this strain control of crystal structure. This mechanical control of crystal symmetry gives a route to tuning the band topology of MoTe$_2$ and possibly the topology of the superconducting state.

We identify the phase boundary between spiral spin and ferromagnetic phases in Au$_2$Mn at a critical pressure of 16.4 kbar, as determined by neutron diffraction, magnetization and magnetoresistance measurements. The temperature-dependent critical field at a given pressure is accompanied by a peak in magnetoresistance and a step in magnetization. The critical field decreases with increasing temperature and pressure. The critical pressure separating the spiral phase and ferromagnetism coincides with the disappearance of the magnetroresistance peak, where the critical field goes to zero. The notable absence of an anomalous Hall effect in the the ferromagnetic phase is attributable to the high conductivity of this material.

As in quantum electrodynamics, the coupling is known, and it is known to lead to an ultraviolet divergence of the level shifts. We show that there are diverging terms of different nature and use the Bethe-type approach to show that they cancel each other, to the leading-order. This resolves the long-standing theoretical controversy and explains the existing experiments. The results allow us to study the temperature dependence of the level shift. The predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data.

The resonant frequency was strongly temperature dependent from 0.1 to 2 K. The experiments are in agreement with recent theoretical calculations of the renormalisation of the electron energy levels due to zero-point and thermal ripplons, analogous to a condensed matter Lamb shift. The temperature-dependent contribution to the linewidth for excitation to the first excited state at 189.6 GHz is compared with other measurements and theoretical predictions.

This paper summarizes 0 GPa to 0.6 GPa neutron diffraction measurements of a nickel hexacyanochromate coordination polymer (NiCrPB) that has the face-centered cubic, Prussian blue structure. Deuterated powders of NiCrPB contain ~100 nm sided cubic particles. The application of a large magnetic field shows the ambient pressure, saturated magnetic structure. Pressures of less than 1 GPa have previously been shown to decrease the magnetic susceptibility by as much as half, and we find modifications to the nuclear crystal structure at these pressures that we quantify. Bridging cyanide molecules isomerize their coordination direction under pressure to change the local ligand field and introduce inhomogeneities in the local (magnetic) anisotropy that act as pinning sites for magnetic domains, thereby reducing the low field magnetic susceptibility.

Most unconventional superconductors, including cuprates and iron-based superconductors, are derived from chemical doping or application of pressure on their collinearly magnetic-ordered parent compounds[1-5]. The recently discovered pressure-induced superconductor CrAs, as a rare example of a non-collinear helimagnetic superconductor, has therefore generated great interest in understanding microscopic magnetic properties and their interplay with superconductivity [6-8]. Unlike cuprates and iron based superconductors where the magnetic moment direction barely changes upon doping, here we show that CrAs exhibits a spin reorientation from the ab plane to the ac plane, along with an abrupt drop of the magnetic propagation vector at a critical pressure (Pc~0.6 GPa). This magnetic phase transition coincides with the emergence of bulk superconductivity, indicating a direct connection between magnetism and superconductivity. With further increasing pressure, the magnetic order completely disappears near the optimal Tc regime (P~0.94 GPa). Moreover, the Cr magnetic moments between nearest neighbors tend to be aligned antiparallel with increasing pressure toward the optimal superconductivity regime. Our findings suggest that the non-collinear helimagnetic order is strongly coupled to structural and electronic degrees of freedom, and that antiferromagnetic correlations associated with the low magnetic vector phase are crucial for superconductivity.

In PZT these compositions are ferroelectrics, but in PMN-xPT they are relaxors because the dielectric permittivity is frequency dependent and exhibits non-Arrhenius behavior. We show that the nanoscale structure unique to PMN-xPT and other lead-oxide perovskite relaxors is absent in PZT and correlates with a greater than 100% enhancement of the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient in PMN-xPT relative to that in PZT. By comparing dielectric, structural, lattice dynamical, and piezoelectric measurements on PZT and PMN-xPT, two nearly identical compounds that represent weak and strong random electric field limits, we show that quenched (static) random fields establish the relaxor phase and identify the order parameter.

We study nonlinear inter-subband microwave absorption of electrons bound to the liquid helium surface. Already for a comparatively low radiation intensity, resonant absorption due to transitions between the two lowest subbands is accompanied by electron overheating. The overheating results in a significant population of higher subbands. The Coulomb interaction between electrons causes a shift of the resonant frequency, which depends on the population of the excited states and thus on the electron temperature $T_e$. The latter is determined experimentally from the electron photoconductivity. The experimentally established relationship between the frequency shift and $T_e$ is in reasonable agreement with the theory. The dependence of the shift on the radiation intensity introduces nonlinearity into the rate of the inter-subband absorption resulting in bistability and hysteresis of the resonant response. The hysteresis of the response explains the behavior in the regime of frequency modulation, which we observe for electrons on liquid $^3$He and which was previously seen for electrons on liquid $^4$He.

Many of the anomalous properties of water are amplified in the deeply supercooled region. Here we present neutron scattering measurements of the density of heavy water confined in a nanoporous silica matrix MCM-41-S (\approx15 Å pore diameter), namely, the equation of state ρ(T,P), in a temperature-pressure range, from 300 K to 130 K and from 1 bar to 2900 bar, where bulk water will crystalize. A sudden change of slope in the otherwise continuous density profile (a "kink") is observed below a certain pressure Pc; however, this feature is absent above Pc. Instead, a hysteresis phenomenon in the density profiles between the warming and cooling scans becomes prominent above Pc. Hence, the data can be interpreted as a line of apparent 2nd-order phase transition at low pressures evolving into a line of 1st-order phase transition at high pressures. If so, the existence of a "tricritical point" at Pc \approx 1500 bar, Tc \approx 210 K becomes another possible scenario to explain the exceptionally rich phase behavior of low-temperature confined water.

Quantitative analysis indicates the E-treated sample has handedness that can be reversed by E. We further show close association between cycloidal and ferroelectric domains through E-driven spin and electric polarization hysteresis. We suggest that definite cycloidal handedness is achieved through magneto-elastically induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions.

We find no evidence of additional structures for pressures up to 2.5 GPa (at 300 K). Both the T-cT and O-cT transitions exhibit significant hysteresis effects and we demonstrate that coexistence of the O and cT phases can occur if a non-hydrostatic component of pressure is present. Measurements of the magnetic diffraction peaks show no change in the magnetic structure or ordered moment as a function of pressure in the O phase and we find no evidence of magnetic ordering in the cT phase. Band structure calculations show that the transition results in a strong decrease of the iron 3d density of states at the Fermi energy, consistent with a loss of the magnetic moment.

Abstract:
Inelastic neutron scattering and bulk magnetic susceptibility studies of the quantum S=1/2 spin ladder system IPA-CuCl3 are performed under hydrostatic pressure. The pressure dependence of the spin gap $Δ$ is determined. At $P=1.5$ GPa it is reduced to $Δ=0.79$ meV from $Δ=1.17$ meV at ambient pressure. The results allow us to predict a soft-mode quantum phase transition in this system at P…

The pressure dependence of the spin gap $Δ$ is determined. At $P=1.5$ GPa it is reduced to $Δ=0.79$ meV from $Δ=1.17$ meV at ambient pressure. The results allow us to predict a soft-mode quantum phase transition in this system at P$_\mathrm{c}\sim 4$ GPa. The measurements are complicated by a proximity of a structural phase transition that leads to a deterioration of the sample.

Here we report that CaFe2As2 undergoes a pressure-induced transition to a non-magnetic, volume "collapsed" tetragonal phase, which becomes superconducting at lower temperature. Spin-polarized total-energy calculations on the collapsed structure reveal that the magnetic Fe moment itself collapses, consistent with the absence of magnetic order in neutron diffraction.

Abstract:
We report the temperature dependent mid- and near-infrared spectra of K4C60, Rb4C60 and Cs4C60. The splitting of the vibrational and electronic transitions indicates a molecular symmetry change of C604- which brings the fulleride anion from D2h to either a D3d or a D5d distortion. In contrast to Cs4C60, low temperature neutron diffraction measurements did not reveal a structural phase transition…

In contrast to Cs4C60, low temperature neutron diffraction measurements did not reveal a structural phase transition in either K4C60 and Rb4C60. This proves that the molecular transition is driven by the molecular Jahn-Teller effect, which overrides the distorting potential field of the surrounding cations at high temperature. In K4C60 and Rb4C60 we suggest a transition from a static to a dynamic Jahn-Teller state without changing the average structure. We studied the librations of these two fullerides by temperature dependent inelastic neutron scattering and conclude that both pseudorotation and jump reorientation are present in the dynamic Jahn-Teller state.

We show that small numbers of electrons, including a single electron, can be held in a novel electrostatic trap above the surface of superfluid helium. A potential well is created using microfabricated electrodes in a 5 micron diameter pool of helium. Electrons are injected into the trap from an electron reservoir on a helium microchannel. They are individually detected using a superconducting single-electron transistor (SET) as an electrometer. A Coulomb staircase is observed as electrons leave the trap one-by-one until the trap is empty. A design for a scalable quantum information processor using arrays of electron traps is presented

We present measurements of the resonant microwave excitation of the Rydberg energy levels of surface state electrons on superfluid helium. The temperature dependent linewidth agrees well with theoretical predictions and is very small below 300 mK. Absorption saturation and power broadening were observed as the fraction of electrons in the first excited state was increased to 0.49, close to the thermal excitation limit of 0.5. The Rabi frequency was determined as a function of microwave power. The high values of the ratio of the Rabi frequency to linewidth confirm this system as an excellent candidate for creating qubits.

The nature of the capacitive signal in a bounded 2DES is determined by a resistive cut-off frequency 1/$τ\propto σ_{xx}$, the longitudinal magnetoconductivity. A new response mechanism is reported for angular frequencies $ω> 1/τ$, which is controlled by the $\em transverse$ or Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ and the boundaries of the sample, even at frequencies far below those of the Edge Magnetoplasma resonances and away from the QH-conditions.

The a.c. response of an unpinned and finite 2D Wigner crystal to electric fields at an angular frequency $ω$ has been calculated in the dissipative limit, $ωτ\ll 1$, where $τ^{-1}$ is the scattering rate. For electrons screened by parallel electrodes, in zero magnetic field the long-wavelength excitations are a diffusive longitudinal transmission line mode and a diffusive shear mode. A magnetic field couples these modes together to form two new magneto-shear modes. The dimensionless coupling parameter $β=2(c_{t}/c_{l})|σ_{xy}/σ_{xx}|$ where $c_{t}$ and $c_{l}$ are the speeds of transverse and longitudinal sound in the collisionless limit and $σ_{xy}$ and $σ_{xx}$ are the tensor components of the magnetoconductivity. For $β\geqslant 1$, both the coupled modes contribute to the response of 2D electrons in a Corbino disk measurement of magnetoconductivity. For $β\gg 1$, the electron crystal rotates rigidly in a magnetic field. In general, both the amplitude and phase of the measured a.c. currents are changed by the shear modulus. In principle, both the magnetoconductivity and the shear modulus can be measured simultaneously.

The forces on individual electrons in an unscreened nondegenerate electron fluid, due to electron density fluctuations, have been calculated using Monte Carlo simulations and determined experimentally over a broad range of the plasma parameter Gamma. The experimental results are obtained from the magnetoconductivity sigma(B) measured for electrons on liquid helium below 1 K for B \leq 8 T. The magnitude and density dependence of sigma(B) are explained by the many-electron theory of magnetotransport. The internal electric fields found from the experiments are in excellent agreement with the simulations.
