Spatial confinement of electronic topological surface states (TSS) in topological insulators poses a formidable challenge because TSS are protected by time-reversal symmetry. In previous works formation of a gap in the electronic spectrum of TSS has been successfully demonstrated in topological insulator/magnetic material heterostructures, where ferromagnetic exchange interactions locally lifts the time-reversal symmetry. Here we report an experimental evidence of exchange interaction between a topological insulator Bi2Se3 and a magnetic insulator EuSe. Spin-polarized neutron reflectometry reveals a reduction of the in-plane magnetic susceptibility within a 2 nm interfacial layer of EuSe, and the combination of SQUID magnetometry and Hall measurements points to the formation of an antiferromagnetic layer with at least five-fold enhancement of Néel's temperature. Abrupt resistance changes in high magnetic fields indicate interfacial exchange coupling that affects transport in a TSS. High temperature local control of TSS with zero net magnetization unlocks new opportunities for the design of electronic, spintronic and quantum computation devices, ranging from quantization of Hall conductance in zero fields to spatial localization of non-Abelian excitations in superconducting topological qubits.

The paper reports on the preparation of xenotime-structured ceramics by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) method. Phosphates Y$_{0.95}$Gd$_{0.05}$PO$_4$ (YPO$_4$:Gd) were obtained by the sol-gel method. The synthesized nanopowders are collected in large agglomerates 10-50 mkm in size. Ceramics has a fine-grained microstructure and a high relative density (98.67%). The total time of the SPS process was approximately 18 min. High-density sintered ceramics YPO$_4$:Gd with a xenotime structure were irradiated with Xe$^{+26}$ ions (E = 167 MeV) to fluences of $1\times10^{12}$-$3\times 10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. Complete amorphization at maximum fluence was not achieved. As the fluence increases, an insignificant increase in the depth of the amorphous layer is observed. According to the results of grazing incidence XRD (GIXRD), with an increase in fluence from $1\times10^{12}$-$3\times 10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$, an increase in the volume fraction of the amorphous structure from 20 to 70% is observed. The intensity of XRD peak 200 YPO$_4$:Gd after recovery annealing (700$^\circ$C, 18 h) reached a value of ~80% of the initial intensity I0.

Irradiation by accelerated electrons up to dose of 10^9 Ge was found not to result in a destruction of the target phase. After the irradiation, an increasing of the leaching rate by an order of magnitude (up to ~10^{-8} g/(cm2*day)) and a reduction of the mechanical properties by 32% as compared to the non-irradiated ceramic specimen were observed.

Ceramics with relatively high density (more than 97.5%) were produced by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) of submicron powders obtained by sol-gel synthesis. The study of strength characteristics has revealed that hardness the ceramics are greater than 5 GPa, and minimum fracture toughness factor was 1 MPa*m$^{1/2}$. It was found that ceramics have a high hydrolytic resistance in the static regime -- the minimum leaching rates for the Mo- and W-containing specimens were $31\times10^{-6}$ and $3.36\times 10^{-6}$ g/(cm$^2$*day), respectively. The ceramics had a high resistance to the irradiation by Xe$^{+26}$ multiple-charged ions with the energy 167 MeV up to the fluences in the range 1*10$^{12}$ - 6*10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. The Mo-containing Na$_{0.5}$Zr$_2$(PO$_4$)$_{2.5}$(XO$_4$)$_{0.5}$ ceramics were shown to have a higher radiation resistance that the phosphate-tungstates.

The coupled spin-1 chains material NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) doped with Br impurities is expected to be a perfect candidate for observing many-body localization at high magnetic field: the so-called "Bose glass", a zero-temperature bosonic fluid, compressible, gapless, incoherent, and short-range correlated. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), we critically address the stability of the Bose glass in doped DTN, and find that it hosts a novel disorder-induced ordered state of matter, where many-body physics leads to an unexpected resurgence of quantum coherence emerging from localized impurity states. An experimental phase diagram of this new "order-from-disorder" phase, established from NMR $T_1^{-1}$ relaxation rate data in the (13 $\pm$ 1)% Br-doped DTN, is found to be in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction from large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

We report a 51V nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of the frustrated spin-1/2 chain compound LiCuVO4, performed in pulsed magnetic fields and focused on high-field phases up to 55 T. For the crystal orientations H // c and H // b we find a narrow field region just below the magnetic saturation where the local magnetization remains uniform and homogeneous, while its value is field dependent. This behavior is the first microscopic signature of the spin-nematic state, breaking spin-rotation symmetry without generating any transverse dipolar order, and is consistent with theoretical predictions for the LiCuVO4 compound.

By measuring the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) 1/T_1 relaxation rate in the Br (bond) doped DTN compound, Ni(Cl(1-x)Br_x)2-4SC(NH2)2 (DTNX), we show that the low-energy spin dynamics of its high magnetic field "Bose-glass" regime is dominated by a strong peak of spin fluctuations found at the nearly doping-independent position H* = 13.6 T. From its temperature and field dependence we conclude that this corresponds to a level crossing of the energy levels related to the doping-induced impurity states. Observation of the local NMR signal from the spin adjacent to the doped Br allowed us to fully characterize this impurity state. We have thus quantified a microscopic theoretical model that paves the way to better understanding of the Bose-glass physics in DTNX, as revealed in the related theoretical study [M. Dupont, S. Capponi, and N. Laflorencie, Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 067204 (2017), arXiv:1610.05136].

The temperature and field dependences of the trapped magnetic fields and of the frozen magnetoresistance of (Pb)Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O ceramics and Bi-based magnetron films are investigated. It is found that in the resistive transition region of granular Bi-HTSC the trapped magnetic fields become highly inhomogeneous and alternating in sign at scale of less than 50 microns. Unlike ceramic the films have critical temperature of trapping lower than the upper temperature of magnetoresistance disappearance. The experimental results are explained by a model in which the magnetic fields are trapped in superconducting loops embedded in Josephson weak links medium. The loops nature which is essentially different for films and ceramics is discussed. Observed temperature and field dependences of trapped field are in good agreement with those calculated for normal law of the loops distribution on critical fields.
