We present an experimental signature of the Anderson localisation of microcavity polaritons, and provide a systematic study of the dependence on disorder strength. We reveal a controllable degree of localisation, as characterised by the inverse-participation ratio, by tuning the positional disorder of arrays of interacting mesas. This constitutes the realisation of disorder-induced localisation in a driven-dissipative system. In addition to being an ideal candidate for investigating localisation in this regime, microcavity polaritons hold promise for low-power, ultra-small devices and their localisation could be used as a resource in quantum memory and quantum information processing.

Feshbach resonance occurs when a pair of free particles is resonantly coupled to a molecular bound state. In the field of ultracold quantum gases, atomic Feshbach resonances became a usual tool for tailoring atomic interactions opening up many new applications in this field. In a semiconductor microcavity, the Feshbach resonance appears when two lower polaritons are coupled to the molecular biexciton state. Here, we demonstrate the existence of a cross Feshbach resonance for which a pair of polaritons, lower together with upper, effectively couples to the biexciton state. This demonstration is a crucial step towards the efficient generation of entangled photon pairs in a semiconductor microcavity. The existence of a Cross Feshbach resonance establishes the condition to convert a pair of upper and lower polaritons via the biexciton state into two lower polaritons, paving the way for the generation of momentum and polarization entangled photons.

We determine experimentally the spinor interaction constants of lower-polaritons $α_1$ and $α_2$ using resonant pump-probe spectroscopy with a spectrally narrow pump pulse. Our experimental findings are analyzed with the Bogoliubov-like theory and mean-field two channel model based on the lower-polariton and biexciton basis. We find an enhancement of the attractive interaction and dissipative nonlinearity of lower-polaritons with anti-parallel spins in the vicinity of the biexciton resonance when the energy of two lower-polaritons approaches energetically that of the biexciton. These observations are consistent with the existence of a scattering resonance between lower-polaritons and biexcitons (polaritonic Feshbach resonance).

The interaction between coherent polaritons and incoherent excitons plays an important role in polariton physics. Using resonant pump-probe spectroscopy with selective excitation of single polariton branches, we investigate the different dephasing mechanisms responsible for generating a long-lived exciton reservoir. As expected, pumping the upper polariton results in a strong dephasing process that leads to the generation of a long lived reservoir. Unexpectedly, we observe an efficient reservoir creation while exciting only the lower polariton branch when the detuning is increased towards positive detuning. We propose a simple theoretical model, the polaritonic Bloch equations, to describe the dynamics of the system.

Second-order time correlation measurements with a temporal resolution better than 3 ps were performed on a CdTe microcavity where spontaneous Bose-Einstein condensation is observed. After the laser pulse, the nonresonantly excited thermal polariton population relaxes into a coherent polariton condensate. Photon statistics of the light emitted by the microcavity evidences a clear phase transition from the thermal state to a coherent state, which occurs within 3.2 ps after the onset of stimulated scattering. Following this very fast transition, we show that the emission possesses a very high coherence that persists for more than 100 ps after the build-up of the condensate.

We evidence the noise-induced transitions between the two stable states of the bistable polaritons. It is shown that the external noise specifications, intensity and correlation time, can efficiently modify the polariton Kramers time and residence time. We find that there is a threshold noise strength that provokes the collapse of the hysteresis loop. The experimental results are reproduced by numerical simulations using Gross-Pitaeviskii equation driven by a stochastic excitation.

Spinor stochastic resonance is demonstrated in a zero-dimensional GaAs based microcavity. The resonance behavior of both the spin amplification and the signal-to-noise ratio are experimentally evidenced as a function of the noise strength for different amplitude modulations. They are theoretically reproduced using a spinor- Gross-Pitaevskii equation driven by a randomly polarized laser field.

A Feshbach resonance occurs when the energy of two interacting free particles comes to resonance with a molecular bound state. When approaching this resonance, dramatic changes in the interaction strength between the particles occur. Feshbach resonances have been an essential tool to control the atom interactions, which can even be switched from repulsive to attractive [1-4]. Thanks to Feshbach resonances many effects in ultracold atomic gases could be explored [5, 6]. Here we demonstrate a Feshbach resonance based on polariton spinor interactions that characterize the fundamental interaction process in polariton quantum systems. We show the clear enhancement of attractive interactions and the prompt change to repulsive interaction by tuning the energy of two polaritons with anti-parallel spins across the biexciton bound state energy. A mean field two-channel model quantitatively reproduces the experimental results. This observation paves the way for a new tool to tune the polariton interactions and to move forward into quantum correlated polariton physics.

Integration of optical elements into scalable chips has been at the center of a large effort in recent years. Concurrently, the separation between the diverse functions, namely switches, detectors or emitters increases significantly the final number of components on chip. Such technical limitations may be overcome by introducing agile devices able, for example, to simultaneously detect, process and emit a coherent signal. Such a pathway has been explored with different approaches that bear advantages and drawbacks. Polaritons have often been proposed as promising candidates for multifunctional devices. Here we present an optical switch based on polariton lasing. An incident monochromatic signal is channeled into several polariton laser beams at different wavelengths by a novel relaxation mechanism which combines bistability, phonon interactions, long polariton lifetime and bosonic stimulation. We demonstrate spin logic operations conserving the original polarization state that is fully imprinted onto the coherently emitted signals.

We use the exciton-photon based Gross-Pitaevskii equation to model the experiment for both lower and upper polariton modes. The theoretical results reproduce qualitatively the experimental observations revealing the magnitude and the sign of the parallel and anti-parallel spin interaction strength. We evidence the strong influence of the biexciton resonance on the anti-parallel spin polariton energy shift and provide the exciton-biexciton coupling constant. Nonlinear interactions in coherent gases are not only at the origin of of bright and dark solitons and superfluids. At the same time, they give rise to phenomena such as multistability, which hold great promise for the development of advanced photonic and spintronic devices. In particular, spinor multistability in strongly-coupled semiconductor microcavities shows that the spin of hundreds of exciton-polaritons can be coherently controlled, opening the route to spin-optronic devices such as ultrafast spin memories, gates or even neuronal communication schemes. Here, we demonstrate that switching between the stable spin states of a driven polariton gas can be controlled by ultrafast optical pulses. While such a long-lived spin memory necessarily relies on strong and anisotropic spinor interactions within the coherent polariton gas, we also highlight the crucial role of nonlinear losses and formation of a non-radiative particle reservoir for ultrafast spin-switching.

Using angle-resolved heterodyne four-wave-mixing technique, we probe the low momentum excitation spectrum of a coherent polariton gas. The experimental results are well captured by the Bogoliubov transformation which describes the transition from single particle excitations of a normal fluid to sound-wave-like excitations of a superfluid. In a dense coherent polariton gas, we find all the characteristics of a Bogoliubov transformation, i.e. the positive and negative energy branch with respect to the polariton gas energy at rest, sound-wave-like shapes for the excitations dispersion, intensity and linewidth ratio between the two branches in agreement with the theory. The influence of the non-equilibrium character of the polariton gas is shown by a careful analysis of its dispersion.

Polaritons in semiconductor microcavities are hybrid quasiparticles consisting of a superposition of photons and excitons. Due to the photon component, polaritons are characterized by a quantum coherence length in the several micron range. Owing to their exciton content, they display sizeable interactions, both mutual and with other electronic degrees of freedom. These unique features have produced striking matter wave phenomena, such as Bose-Einstein condensation, or parametric processes able to generate quantum entangled polariton states. Recently, several paradigms for spatial confinement of polaritons in semiconductor devices have been established. This opens the way to quantum devices in which polaritons can be used as a vector of quantum information. An essential element of each quantum device is the quantum state control. Here we demonstrate control of the wave function of confined polaritons, by means of tailored resonant optical excitation. By tuning the energy and momentum of the laser, we achieve precise control of the momentum pattern of the polariton wave function. A theoretical model supports unambiguously our observations.
