Different polarization definitions in same-sign $WW$ scattering at the LHC
Abstract: We study the polarization of positively charged $W$'s in the scattering of massive electroweak bosons at hadron colliders. We rely on the separation of weak boson polarizations in the gauge-invariant, doubly-resonant part of the amplitude in Monte Carlo simulations. Polarizations depend on the reference frame in which they are defined. We discuss the change in polarization fractions and in kinemat… ▽ More

Polarized vector boson scattering in the fully leptonic WZ and ZZ channels at the LHC
Abstract: Isolating the scattering of longitudinal weak bosons at the LHC is an important tool to probe the ElectroWeak Symmetry Breaking mechanism. Separating polarizations of $W$ and $Z$ bosons is complicated, because of non resonant contributions and interference effects. Additional care is necessary when considering $Z$ bosons, due to the $γ/Z$ mixing in the coupling to charged leptons. We propose a m… ▽ More

Precise predictions for same-sign W-boson scattering at the LHC
Abstract: Vector-boson scattering processes are of great importance for the current run-II and future runs of the Large Hadron Collider. The presence of triple and quartic gauge couplings in the process gives access to the gauge sector of the Standard Model (SM) and possible new-physics contributions there. To test any new-physics hypothesis, sound knowledge of the SM contributions is necessary, with a prec… ▽ More

$W$ boson polarization in vector boson scattering at the LHC
Abstract: Measuring the scattering of longitudinally-polarized vector bosons represents a fundamental test of ElectroWeak Symmetry Breaking. In addition to the challenges provided by low rates and large backgrounds, there are conceptual issues which need to be clarified for the definition of a suitable signal. Interference Effects in Higgs production through Vector Boson Fusion in the Standard Model and its Singlet Extension
Abstract: Interference effects play an important role in Electroweak Physics. They are responsible for the restoration of unitarity al large energies. When, as is often the case, higher order corrections are only available for some particular subamplitude, interferences need to be carefully computed in order to obtain the best theoretical prediction. WPHACT 1.0 - A program for $WW$, Higgs and 4 fermion physics at $e^+ e^-$ colliders
Abstract: WPHACT (W W and Higgs Physics with PHACT) is a MC program and unweighted event generator which computes all Standard Model processes with four fermion in the final state at $e^+ e^-$ colliders. It is based on an helicity amplitude method which allows precise and fast evaluations of the matrix elements both for massless and massive fermions. Fermion masses for $b$ quarks are exactly taken into ac… ▽ More

$b \bar b W^+ W^-$ production at hadron colliders. Top signal and irreducible backgrounds
Abstract: We compute complete tree level matrix elements for $gg , q \bar q \rightarrow b \bar b W^+W^-$. We analyze the irreducible backgrounds to top signal at the Tevatron and at the LHC. Their contribution to the total cross section is about $5 \%$ at the LHC, due to single resonant channels. Several distributions with contributions from signal and backgrounds are presented.

Perturbative rates and colour rearrangement effects in four-jet events at LEP2
Abstract: An important issue in the direct reconstruction method of determining the $W$ mass from $q\bar q Q\bar Q$ events at LEP2 concerns the impact of the relatively unknown QCD interconnection effects. It has been suggested that a study of `short string' states, in which colour singlet states are formed from $q \bar Q $ and $Q\bar q$ pairs with small phase--space separation, could shed important light… ▽ More

Distributions in Four-Fermion Processes
Abstract: The programs WPHACT and WTO, which are designed for computing cross sections and other relevant observables in the $e^+e^-$ annihilation into four fermions, are used to make detailed and complete predictions for the semi-leptonic and fully hadronic channels $e^+e^- \to \barq q lν, \barq q \barq q$. Both the total cross sections in the LEP~2 energy range and some of the most relevant distribution… ▽ More

Determination of the mass of the W boson
Abstract: Previous studies of the physics potential of LEP2 indicated that with the design luminosity of 500 inverse picobarn one may get a direct measurement of the mass of the W-boson with a precision in the range 30 - 50 MeV. This report presents an updated evaluation of the estimated error on the mass of the W-boson based on recent simulation work and improved theoretical input. The most efficient exp… ▽ More

Higgs Physics at LEP2
Abstract: In this report we review the prospects for Higgs physics at LEP2. The theoretical aspects and the phenomenology of Higgs particles are discussed within the Standard Model (SM) and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The experimental search techniques are described and the discovery limits for Higgs bosons in the LEP2 energy range are summarized. In addition, opportunities of detect… ▽ More

$e^+e^- \to b\bar b W^+W^-$ events at the Next Linear Collider: colour structure of top signal and irreducible background
Abstract: We examine the colour structure and charged particle yield for both the $t \bar t$ signal and the irreducible background processes contributing to \eebbww\ production close to the \ttb\ threshold. The charged particle multiplicity for the various components of the cross section is computed as a function of several kinematic variables. Our study may have important implications for recently propos… ▽ More
