Along with anti-self-dual Yang-Mills and four-dimensional Chern-Simons, this gives rise to a diamond correspondence of theories. In this work we extend this framework to incorporate models realised through gaugings. As well as describing a higher-dimensional origin of coset CFTs, by choosing the details of the reduction from higher dimensions, we obtain rich classes of two-dimensional integrable models including homogeneous sine-Gordon models and generalisations that are new to the literature.

Light-cone gauge-fixed sigma-models on $AdS_n\times S^n$ backgrounds play an important role in the integrability formulation of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The string spectrum of the sigma-model is gauge-independent, however the Hamiltonian and scattering matrix of the transverse worldsheet fields are not. We study how these change for a large family of inequivalent light-cone gauges, which are interpreted as $T\bar{T}$, $\tilde{J}T_τ$, $JT_σ$ and $J^τ$ deformations. We investigate the moduli space of equivalent light-cone gauges and, specialising to $AdS_5 \times S^5$, compute the different light-cone gauge symmetry algebras, well-known to be $\mathfrak{psu}(2|2)^{\oplus 2} \oplus \mathfrak{u}(1)^{\oplus 2}$ for the standard gauge-fixing. Many integrable deformations require a non-standard light-cone gauge, hence our classification and analysis of inequivalent gauges will be important for analysing such models.

With the aim of investigating the existence of an integrable elliptic deformation of strings on $\mathsf{AdS}_3 \times \mathsf{S}^3 \times \mathsf{T}^4$, we compute the tree-level worldsheet S-matrix of the elliptically-deformed bosonic sigma model on $\mathsf{AdS}_3 \times \mathsf{S}^3$ in uniform light-cone gauge. The resulting tree-level S-matrix is compatible with the integrability of the model and has interesting features, including a hidden $\mathsf{U}(1)$ symmetry not manifest in the Lagrangian. We find that it cannot be embedded in the known exact integrable R-matrices describing deformations of the undeformed $\mathsf{AdS}_3 \times \mathsf{S}^3 \times \mathsf{T}^4$ light-cone gauge S-matrix including fermions. Therefore, we construct embeddings of the deformed 6-d metric in type II supergravity with constant dilaton and homogeneous fluxes. The simplicity of these solutions suggests they are promising candidates to lead to an integrable string sigma model including fermions.

Based on ideas of Costello, it has been proposed in work of Bittleston and Skinner that these two approaches can be unified starting from holomorphic Chern-Simons in 6 dimensions. We provide the first complete description of this diamond of integrable theories for a family of deformed sigma models, going beyond the Dirichlet boundary conditions that have been considered thus far. Starting from 6d holomorphic Chern-Simons theory on twistor space with a particular meromorphic 3-form $Ω$, we construct the defect theory to find a novel 4d integrable field theory, whose equations of motion can be recast as the 4d anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations. Symmetry reducing, we find a multi-parameter 2d integrable model, which specialises to the $λ$-deformation at a certain point in parameter space. The same model is recovered by first symmetry reducing, to give 4d Chern-Simons with generalised boundary conditions, and then constructing the defect theory.

To study their integrability properties on the real line, it is necessary to introduce a subtracted monodromy matrix. Moreover, since the theories are not ultralocal, a regularisation is required to compute the Poisson algebra for the subtracted monodromy. As a result the deformation theory of these models is particularly rich since the two supergroups in the product can be deformed independently. We construct bi-$η$ and bi-$λ$ deformations of two classes of $\mathbb{Z}_4$ permutation supercoset sigma models, which describe sectors of the Green-Schwarz and pure-spinor string worldsheet theories on type II AdS$_3$ backgrounds with pure R-R flux. We discuss an important limit of these models when one supergroup is undeformed. The associated deformed supergravity background should preserve 8 supersymmetries and is expected to have better properties than the full bi-deformation. As a step towards investigating the quantum properties of these models, we study the two-loop RG flow of the bosonic truncation of the bi-$λ$ deformation.

They have global $\rm SU(1,1) \times SU(2)$ symmetry, regular curvature, constant dilaton and preserve 8 supercharges. Upon compactification to 4 dimensions they reduce to $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetric $\rm AdS_2 \times S^2$ solutions with electric and magnetic Maxwell fluxes. These type IIB supergravity solutions can be found from the undeformed $\rm AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ background by a combination of T-dualities and S-duality. In contrast to T-duality, S-duality transformations of a type IIB supergravity background do not generally preserve the classical integrability of the corresponding Green-Schwarz superstring sigma model. Nevertheless, we show that integrability is preserved in the present case. Indeed, we find that these backgrounds can be obtained, up to T-dualities, from an integrable inhomogeneous Yang-Baxter deformation (with unimodular Drinfel'd-Jimbo R-matrix) of the original $\rm AdS_3 \times S^3$ supercoset model.

We use the integrable principal chiral model and the conformal Wess-Zumino-Witten model as our starting points and explore their Yang-Baxter and current-current deformations. There is an intricate web of relations between these models based on underlying algebraic structures and worldsheet dualities, which is highlighted throughout. We finish with a discussion of the generalisation to other symmetric integrable models, including some original results related to Z T cosets and their deformations, and the application to string theory. This review is based on notes written for lectures delivered at the school "Integrability, Dualities and Deformations", which ran from 23 to 27 August 2021 in Santiago de Compostela and virtually.

Compared to the case of classical Lie groups, for supergroups there are inequivalent $η$-deformations corresponding to different choices of simple roots. For a class of such deformations we propose the system of screening charges depending on a continuous parameter $b$, which defines the $η$-deformed $OSP(N|2m)$ sigma model in the limit $b\rightarrow\infty$ and a certain Toda QFT as $b\rightarrow0$. In the sigma model regime we show that the leading UV asymptotic of the $η$-deformed model coincides with a perturbed Gaussian theory. In the perturbative regime $b\rightarrow0$ we show that the tree-level two-particle scattering matrix matches the expansion of the trigonometric $OSP(N|2m)$ $S$-matrix.

A large class of integrable deformations of the Principal Chiral Model, known as the Yang-Baxter deformations, are governed by skew-symmetric R-matrices solving the (modified) classical Yang-Baxter equation. We carry out a systematic investigation of these deformations in the presence of the Wess-Zumino term for simple Lie groups, working in a framework that treats both inhomogeneous and homogeneous deformations on the same footing. After analysing the cohomological conditions under which such a deformation is admissible, we consider an action for the general Yang-Baxter deformation of the Principal Chiral Model plus Wess-Zumino term and prove its classical integrability. We also show how the model is found from a number of alternative formulations: affine Gaudin models, E-models, 4-dimensional Chern-Simons theory and, for homogeneous deformations, non-abelian T-duality.

We observe that (i) starting with a classically integrable 2d $σ$-model, (ii) formally promoting its couplings $h_α$ to functions $h_α(τ)$ of 2d time, and (iii) demanding that the resulting time-dependent model also admits a Lax connection implies that $h_α(τ)$ must solve the 1-loop RG equations of the original theory with $τ$ interpreted as RG time. This provides a novel example of an 'integrability - RG flow' connection. The existence of a Lax connection suggests that these time-dependent $σ$-models may themselves be understood as integrable. We investigate this question by studying the possibility of constructing non-local and local conserved charges. Such $σ$-models with $D$-dimensional target space and time-dependent couplings subject to the RG flow naturally appear in string theory upon fixing the light-cone gauge in a $(D+2)$-dimensional conformal $σ$-model with a metric admitting a covariantly constant null Killing vector and a dilaton linear in the null coordinate.

Following arXiv:1907.04737, we continue our investigation of the relation between the renormalizability (with finitely many couplings) and integrability in 2d $σ$-models. We focus on the "$λ$-model," an integrable model associated to a group or symmetric space and containing as special limits a (gauged) WZW model and an "interpolating model" for non-abelian duality. The parameters are the WZ level $k$ and the coupling $λ$, and the fields are $g$, valued in a group $G$, and a 2d vector $A_\pm$ in the corresponding algebra. We formulate the $λ$-model as a $σ$-model on an extended $G \times G \times G$ configuration space $(g, h, \bar{h})$, defining $h $ and $\bar{h}$ by $A_+ = h \partial_+ h^{-1}$, $A_- = \bar{h} \partial_- \bar{h}^{-1}$. Our central observation is that the model on this extended configuration space is renormalizable without any deformation, with only $λ$ running. This is in contrast to the standard $σ$-model found by integrating out $A_\pm$, whose 2-loop renormalizability is only obtained after the addition of specific finite local counterterms, resulting in a quantum deformation of the target space geometry. We compute the 2-loop $β$-function of the $λ$-model for general group and symmetric spaces, and illustrate our results on the examples of $SU(2)/U(1)$ and $SU(2)$. Similar conclusions apply in the non-abelian dual limit implying that non-abelian duality commutes with the RG flow. We also find the 2-loop $β$-function of a "squashed" principal chiral model.

Motivated by the search for new integrable string models, we study the properties of massless tree-level S-matrices for 2d sigma models expanded near the trivial vacuum. We find that, in contrast to the standard massive case, there is no apparent link between massless S-matrices and integrability: in well-known integrable models the tree-level massless S-matrix fails to factorize and exhibits particle production. Such tree-level particle production is found in several classically integrable models: the principal chiral model, its classically equivalent "pseudo-dual" model, its non-abelian dual model and also the SO(N+1)/SO(N) coset model. The connection to integrability may, in principle, be restored if one expands near a non-trivial vacuum with massive excitations. We discuss IR ambiguities in 2d massless tree-level amplitudes and their resolution using either a small mass parameter or the i epsilon-regularization. In general, these ambiguities can lead to anomalies in the equivalence of the S-matrix under field redefinitions, and may be linked to the observed particle production in integrable models. We also comment on the transformation of massless S-matrices under sigma model T-duality, comparing the standard and the "doubled" formulations (with T-duality covariance built into the latter).

The eta-deformation is governed by an R-matrix that solves the non-split modified classical Yang-Baxter equation on the superisometry algebra of the model. Such R-matrices include those of Drinfel'd-Jimbo type, which are constructed from a Dynkin diagram and the associated Cartan-Weyl basis. Drinfel'd-Jimbo R-matrices associated with inequivalent bases will typically lead to different deformed backgrounds. For the two models under consideration we find that the unimodularity condition, implying that there is no Weyl anomaly, is satisfied if and only if all the simple roots are fermionic. For AdS2 x S2 x T6 we construct backgrounds corresponding to the three Dynkin diagrams. When all the simple roots are fermionic we find a supergravity background previously obtained by directly solving the supergravity equations. For AdS5 x S5 we construct a supergravity background corresponding to the Dynkin diagram with all fermionic simple roots.

Poisson-Lie dualising the eta deformation of the G/H symmetric space sigma model with respect to the simple Lie group G is conjectured to give an analytic continuation of the associated lambda deformed model. In this paper we investigate when the eta deformed model can be dualised with respect to a subgroup G_0 of G. Starting from the first-order action on the complexified group and integrating out the degrees of freedom associated to different subalgebras, we find it is possible to dualise when G_0 is associated to a sub-Dynkin diagram. Additional U_1 factors built from the remaining Cartan generators can also be included. The resulting construction unifies both the Poisson-Lie dual with respect to G and the complete abelian dual of the eta deformation in a single framework, with the integrated algebras unimodular in both cases. We speculate that extending these results to the path integral formalism may provide an explanation for why the eta deformed AdS_5 x S^5 superstring is not one-loop Weyl invariant, that is the couplings do not solve the equations of type IIB supergravity, yet its complete abelian dual and the lambda deformed model are.

We make the curious observation that the above algebra is related to kappa-Poincaré symmetry. When dropping the graded part psl(2|2) we find a novel one-parameter deformation of the 3D kappa-Poincaré algebra. Our construction also provides a concise exact expression for its universal R-matrix.

We propose that the Yang-Baxter deformation of the symmetric space sigma-model parameterized by an r-matrix solving the homogeneous (classical) Yang-Baxter equation is equivalent to the non-abelian dual of the undeformed model with respect to a subgroup determined by the structure of the r-matrix. We explicitly demonstrate this on numerous examples in the case of the AdS_5 sigma-model. The same should also be true for the full AdS_5 x S^5 supercoset model, providing an explanation for and generalizing several recent observations relating homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations based on non-abelian r-matrices to the undeformed AdS_5 x S^5 model by a combination of T-dualities and non-linear coordinate redefinitions. This also includes the special case of deformations based on abelian r-matrices, which correspond to TsT transformations: they are equivalent to non-abelian duals of the original model with respect to a central extension of abelian subalgebras.

We consider various homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring that can be obtained from the eta-deformed superstring and related models by singular boosts. The jordanian deformations we obtain in this way behave similarly to the eta-deformed model with regard to supergravity: T dualizing the classical sigma model it is possible to find corresponding solutions of supergravity, which, however, have dilatons that prevent T dualizing back. Hence the backgrounds of these jordanian deformations are not solutions of supergravity. Still, they do satisfy a set of recently found modified supergravity equations which implies that the corresponding sigma models are scale invariant. The abelian models that we obtain by singular boosts do directly correspond to solutions of supergravity. In addition to our main results we consider contraction limits of our main example, which do correspond to supergravity solutions.

This is also true for the bosonic sector of the theory with su(2,2), the isometry algebra of AdS_5, admitting one split and three non-split r matrices. In this article we explore these r matrices and the corresponding geometries. We investigate their contraction limits, comment on supergravity backgrounds and demonstrate their relation to gauged-WZW deformations. We then extend the three non-split cases to AdS_5 x S^5 and compute four separate bosonic two-particle tree-level S-matrices based on inequivalent BMN-type light-cone gauges. The resulting S-matrices, while different, are related by momentum-dependent one-particle changes of basis.

We consider the ABF background underlying the eta-deformed AdS5 x S5 sigma model. This background fails to satisfy the standard IIB supergravity equations which indicates that the corresponding sigma model is not Weyl invariant, i.e. does not define a critical string theory in the usual sense. We argue that the ABF background should still correspond to UV finite theory on a flat 2d world-sheet, implying that the eta-deformed model is scale invariant. This property follows from the formal relation via T-duality between the eta-deformed model and the one defined by an exact type IIB supergravity solution that has 6 isometries albeit broken by a linear dilaton. We find that the ABF background satisfies candidate type IIB scale invariance conditions which for the R-R field strengths are of the second order in derivatives. Surprisingly, we also find that the this background obeys an interesting modification of the standard IIB supergravity equations that are first order in derivatives of R-R fields. These modified equations explicitly depend on Killing vectors of the ABF background and, although not universal, imply the universal scale invariance conditions. Moreover, we show that it is precisely the non-isometric dilaton of the T-dual solution that leads, after the T-duality, to a modification of type II equations from their standard form. We conjecture that the modified equations should follow from kappa-symmetry of the eta-deformed model. All our observations apply also to eta-deformations of AdS3 x S3 and AdS2 x S2 models.

We give two alternative presentations of the Hopf algebra, along with related discussions on the issue of evaluation representations. We study the classical r-matrix, and re-discover the need for a secret symmetry also in this context. Finally, taking the simplifying zero-coupling limit of the S-matrix as a generating R-matrix for the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain an effective model of free fermions on a periodic spin-chain. This limit should provide hints to the one-loop anomalous dimension of the mysterious superconformal quantum mechanics dual to the superstring theory in this geometry.

We find an exact type IIB supergravity solution that represents a one-parameter deformation of the T-dual of the AdS_5 x S^5 background (with T-duality applied in all 6 abelian bosonic isometric directions). The non-trivial fields are the metric, dilaton and RR 5-form only. The latter has remarkably simple "undeformed" form when written in terms of a "deformation-rotated" vielbein basis. An unusual feature of this solution is that the dilaton contains a linear dependence on the isometric coordinates of the metric precluding a straightforward reversal of T-duality. If we still formally dualize back, we find exactly the metric, B-field and product of dilaton with RR field strengths as recently extracted from the eta-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 superstring action in arXiv:1507.04239. We also discuss similar solutions for deformed AdS_n x S^n backgrounds with n=2,3. In the eta -> i limit we demonstrate that all these backgrounds can be interpreted as special limits of gauged WZW models and are also related to (a limit of) the Pohlmeyer-reduced models of the AdS_n x S^n superstrings.

We show that the eta-deformed model may be obtained from the lambda-deformed one by a special scaling limit and analytic continuation in coordinates combined with a particular identification of the parameters of the two models. The relation between the couplings and deformation parameters is consistent with the interpretation of the first model as a real quantum deformation and the second as a root of unity quantum deformation. For the AdS_2 x S^2 case we then explore the effect of this limit on the supergravity background associated to the lambda-deformed model. We also suggest that the two models may form a dual Poisson-Lie pair and provide direct evidence for this in the case of the integrable deformations of the coset associated with S^2.

We derive the exact S-matrix for the scattering of particular representations of the centrally-extended psu(1|1)^2 Lie superalgebra, conjectured to be related to the massive modes of the light-cone gauge string theory on AdS_2 x S^2 x T^6. The S-matrix consists of two copies of a centrally-extended psu(1|1) invariant S-matrix and is in agreement with the tree-level result following from perturbation theory. Although the overall factor is left unfixed, the constraints following from crossing symmetry and unitarity are given. The scattering involves long representations of the symmetry algebra, and the relevant representation theory is studied in detail. We also discuss Yangian symmetry and find it has a standard form for a particular limit of the aforementioned representations. This has a natural interpretation as the massless limit, and we investigate the corresponding limits of the massive S-matrix. Under the assumption that the massless modes of the light-cone gauge string theory transform in these limiting representations, the resulting S-matrices would provide the building blocks for the full S-matrix. Finally, some brief comments are given on the Bethe ansatz.

Continuing the program initiated in arXiv:1304.1798 we investigate unitarity methods applied to two-dimensional integrable field theories. The one-loop computation is generalized to encompass theories with different masses in the asymptotic spectrum and external leg corrections. Additionally, the prescription for working with potentially singular cuts is modified to cope with an ambiguity that was not encountered before. The resulting methods are then applied to three light-cone gauge string theories; i) $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ supported by RR flux, ii) $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3 \times S^1$ supported by RR flux and iii) $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ supported by a mix of RR and NSNS fluxes. In the first case we find agreement with the exact result following from symmetry considerations and in the second case with one-loop semiclassical computations. This agreement crucially includes the rational terms and hence supports the conjecture that S-matrices of integrable field theories are cut-constructible, up to a possible shift in the coupling. In the final case, under the assumption that our methods continue to give all rational terms, we give a conjecture for the one-loop phases.

We study the deformed AdS_5 x S^5 supercoset model of arXiv:1309.5850 which depends on one parameter kappa and has classical quantum group symmetry. We confirm the conjecture that in the "maximal" deformation limit kappa -> infinity this model is T-dual to "flipped" double Wick rotation of the target space AdS_5 x S^5, i.e. dS_5 x H^5 space supported by an imaginary 5-form flux. In the imaginary deformation limit, kappa -> i, the corresponding target space metric is of a pp-wave type and thus the resulting light-cone gauge S-matrix becomes relativistically invariant. Omitting non-unitary contributions of imaginary WZ terms, we find that this tree-level S-matrix is equivalent to that of the generalized sine-Gordon model representing the Pohlmeyer reduction of the undeformed AdS_5 x S^5 superstring model. We also study in some detail similar deformations of the AdS_3 x S^3 and AdS_2 x S^2 supercosets. The bosonic part of the deformed AdS_3 x S^3 model happens to be equivalent to the symmetric case of the sum of the Fateev integrable deformation of the SL(2) and SU(2) principal chiral models, while in the AdS_2 x S^2 case the role of the Fateev model is played by the 2d "sausage" model. The kappa = i limits are again directly related to the Pohlmeyer reductions of the corresponding AdS_n x S^n supercosets: (2,2) super sine-Gordon model and its complex sine-Gordon analog. We address the question about the exact form of the dispersion relation for light-cone string excitations in string theory in AdS3 x S3 x T4 with mixed R-R and NS-NS 3-form fluxes. The analogy with string theory in AdS5 x S5 suggests that in addition to the data provided by the perturbative near-BMN expansion and the symmetry algebra considerations there is also another source of information about the dispersion relation -- the semiclassical giant magnon solution. In earlier work in arXiv:1303.1037 and arXiv:1304.4099 it was found that the symmetry algebra constraints consistent with perturbative expansion do not completely determine the form of the dispersion relation. The aim of the present paper is to fix it by constructing a generalization of the known dyonic giant magnon soliton on S3 to the presence of a non-zero NS-NS flux described by a WZ term in the string action. We find that the angular momentum of this soliton gets shifted by a term linear in world-sheet momentum. We also discuss the symmetry algebra of the string light-cone S-matrix and show that the exact dispersion relation, which should have the correct perturbative BMN and semiclassical giant magnon limits, should also contain such a linear momentum term. The simplicity of the resulting bound-state picture provides a strong argument in favour of this dispersion relation.

The world-sheet S-matrix of the string in AdS5 x S5 has been shown to admit a q-deformation that relates it to the S-matrix of a generalization of the sine-Gordon theory, which arises as the Pohlmeyer reduction of the superstring. Whilst this is a fascinating development the resulting S-matrix is not explicitly unitary. The problem has been known for a long time in the context of S-matrices related to quantum groups. A braiding relation often called "unitarity" actually only corresponds to quantum field theory unitarity when the S-matrix is Hermitian analytic and quantum group S-matrices manifestly violate this. On the other hand, overall consistency of the S-matrix under the bootstrap requires that the deformation parameter is a root of unity and consequently one is forced to perform the "vertex" to IRF, or SOS, transformation on the states to truncate the spectrum consistently. In the IRF formulation unitarity is now manifest and the string S-matrix and the S-matrix of the generalised sine-Gordon theory are recovered in two different limits. In the latter case, expanding the Yang-Baxter equation we find that the tree-level S-matrix of the Pohlmeyer-reduced string should satisfy a modified classical Yang-Baxter equation explaining the apparent anomaly in the perturbative computation. We show that the IRF form of the S-matrix meshes perfectly with the bootstrap equations.

Abstract:
We consider superstring theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 supported by a combination of RR and NSNS 3-form fluxes (with parameter of the NSNS 3-form q). We consider superstring theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 supported by a combination of RR and NSNS 3-form fluxes (with parameter of the NSNS 3-form q). This theory interpolates between the pure RR flux model (q=0) whose spectrum is expected to be described by a Bethe ansatz and the pure NSNS flux model (q=1) which is described by the supersymmetric extension of the SL(2,R) x SU(2) WZW model. As a first step towards the solution of this integrable theory for generic value of q we compute the corresponding tree-level S-matrix for massive BMN-type excitations. We find that this S-matrix has a surprisingly simple dependence on q: the diagonal amplitudes have exactly the same structure as in the q=0 case but with the BMN dispersion relation e^2 = p^2 + 1 replaced by the one with shifted momentum and mass, e^2 = (p + q)^2 + 1 - q^2. The off-diagonal amplitudes are then determined from the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We also construct the Pohlmeyer reduced model corresponding to this superstring theory and find that it depends on q only through its mass-squared parameter proportional to (1-q^2), implying that its relativistic S-matrix is q-independent.

The Pohlmeyer reduced equations for strings moving only in the AdS subspace of AdS_5 x S^5 have been used recently in the study of classical Euclidean minimal surfaces for Wilson loops and some semiclassical three-point correlation functions. We find an action that leads to these reduced superstring equations. For example, for a bosonic string in AdS_n such an action contains a Liouville scalar part plus a K/K gauged WZW model for the group K=SO(n-2) coupled to another term depending on two additional fields transforming as vectors under K. Solving for the latter fields gives a non-abelian Toda model coupled to the Liouville theory. For n=5 we generalize this bosonic action to include the S^5 contribution and fermionic terms. The corresponding reduced model for the AdS_2 x S^2 truncation of the full AdS_5 x S^5 superstring turns out to be equivalent to N=2 super Liouville theory. Our construction is based on taking a limit of the previously found reduced theory actions for bosonic strings in AdS_n x S^1 and superstrings in AdS_5 x S^5. This new action may be useful as a starting point for possible quantum generalizations or deformations of the classical Pohlmeyer-reduced theory. We give examples of simple extrema of this reduced superstring action which represent strings moving in the AdS_5 part of the space. Expanding near these backgrounds we compute the corresponding fluctuation spectra and show that they match the spectra found in the original superstring theory.

The investigation of the q deformation of the S-matrix for excitations on the string world sheet in AdS5 x S5 is continued. We argue that due to the lack of Lorentz invariance the situation is more subtle than in a relativistic theory in that the nature of bound states depends on their momentum. At low enough momentum |p|<E the bound states transform in the anti-symmetric representation of the super-algebra symmetry and become the solitons of the Pohlmeyer reduced theory in the relativistic limit. At a critical momentum |p|=E they become marginally unstable, and at higher momenta the stable bound states are in the symmetric representation and become the familiar magnons in the string limit as q->1. This subtlety fixes a problem involving the consistency of crossing symmetry with the relativistic limit found in earlier work. With mirror kinematics, obtained after a double Wick rotation, the bound state structure is simpler and there are no marginally unstable bound states.

A set of four factorizable non-relativistic S-matrices for a multiplet of fundamental particles are defined based on the R-matrix of the quantum group deformation of the centrally extended superalgebra su(2|2). The S-matrices are a function of two independent couplings g and q=exp(iπ/k). The main result is to find the scalar factor, or dressing phase, which ensures that the unitarity and crossing equations are satisfied. For generic (g,k), the S-matrices are branched functions on a product of rapidity tori. In the limit k->infinity, one of them is identified with the S-matrix describing the magnon excitations on the string world sheet in AdS5 x S5, while another is the mirror S-matrix that is needed for the TBA. In the g->infinity limit, the rapidity torus degenerates, the branch points disappear and the S-matrices become meromorphic functions, as required by relativistic S-matrix theory. However, it is only the mirror S-matrix which satisfies the correct relativistic crossing equation. The mirror S-matrix in the relativistic limit is then closely related to that of the semi-symmetric space sine-Gordon theory obtained from the string theory by the Pohlmeyer reduction, but has anti-symmetric rather than symmetric bound states. The interpolating S-matrix realizes at the quantum level the fact that at the classical level the two theories correspond to different limits of a one-parameter family of symplectic structures of the same integrable system.

We construct a relativistic scattering theory based on a q deformation and large string tension limit of the magnon S-matrix of the string world sheet theory in AdS_5 x S^5. The S-matrix falls naturally into a previously studied class associated to affine quantum groups, in this case for a twisted affine loop superalgebra associated to an outer automorphism of sl(2|2). This infinite algebra includes the celebrated triply extended psl(2|2) x R^3 algebra, but only two of the centres, the lightcone components of the 2-momentum, are non-vanishing. The algebra has the interpretation as an extended supersymmetry algebra including a non-trivial R-symmetry. The representation theory of this algebra has some complications in that tensor products are reducible but indecomposable, however, we find that structure meshes perfectly with the bootstrap, or fusion, equations of S-matrix theory. The bootstrap equations can then be used inductively to generate the complete S-matrix. Unlike the magnon theory, the relativistic theory only has a finite set of states and we find that - at least when the deformation parameter q is a root of unity - the spectrum matches precisely the soliton spectrum of the relativistic theory underlying the Pohlmeyer reduction of the string world sheet theory known as the semi-symmetric space sine-Gordon theory.

We investigate the structure of the quantum S-matrix for perturbative excitations of the Pohlmeyer reduced version of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring following arXiv:0912.2958. The reduced theory is a fermionic extension of a gauged WZW model with an integrable potential. We use as an input the result of the one-loop perturbative scattering amplitude computation and an analogy with simpler reduced AdS_n x S^n theories with n=2,3. The n=2 theory is equivalent to the N=2 2-d supersymmetric sine-Gordon model for which the exact quantum S-matrix is known. In the n=3 case the one-loop perturbative S-matrix, improved by a contribution of a local counterterm, satisfies the group factorization property and the Yang-Baxter equation, and reveals the existence of a novel quantum-deformed 2-d supersymmetry which is not manifest in the action. The one-loop perturbative S-matrix of the reduced AdS_5 x S^5 theory has the group factorisation property but does not satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation suggesting some subtlety with the realisation of quantum integrability. As a possible resolution, we propose that the S-matrix of this theory may be identified with the quantum-deformed [psu(2|2)]^2 x R^2 symmetric R-matrix constructed in arXiv:1002.1097. We conjecture the exact all-order form of this S-matrix and discuss its possible relation to the perturbative S-matrix defined by the path integral. As in the AdS_3 x S^3 case the symmetry of the S-matrix may be interpreted as an extended quantum-deformed 2-d supersymmetry.

Extending our previous work (arXiv:0912.2958) we compute the one-loop two-particle S-matrix for the elementary massive excitations. In the N = 2 case corresponding to the complex sine-Gordon theory it agrees with the charge-one sector of the quantum soliton S-matrix proposed in hep-th/9410140. In the case of N > 2 when the gauge group SO(N) is non-abelian we find a curious anomaly in the Yang-Baxter equation which we interpret as a gauge artifact related to the fact that the scattered particles are not singlets under the residual global subgroup of the gauge group.

With a motivation to find a 2-d Lorentz-invariant solution of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring we continue the study of the Pohlmeyer-reduced form of this theory. The reduced theory is constructed from currents of the superstring sigma model and is classically equivalent to it. Its action is that of G/H=Sp(2,2)xSp(4)/SU(2)^4 gauged WZW model deformed by an integrable potential and coupled to fermions. This theory is UV finite and is conjectured to be related to the superstring theory also at the quantum level. Expanded near the trivial vacuum it has the same elementary excitations (8+8 massive bosonic and fermionic 2-d degrees of freedom) as the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring in the light-cone gauge or near plane-wave expansion. In contrast to the superstring case, the interaction terms in the reduced action are manifestly 2-d Lorentz invariant. Since the theory is integrable, its S-matrix should be effectively determined by the two-particle scattering. Here we explicitly compute the tree-level two-particle S-matrix for the elementary excitations of the reduced theory. We find that this S-matrix has the same index structure and group factorization properties as the superstring S-matrix computed in hep-th/0611169 but has simpler coefficients, depending only on the difference of two rapidities. While the gauge-fixed form of the reduced action has only the bosonic SU(2)^4 part of the PSU(2|2) x PSU(2|2) symmetry of the light-cone superstring spectrum as its manifest symmetry we conjecture that it should also have a hidden fermionic symmetry that effectively interchanges bosons and fermions and which should guide us towards understanding the relation between the two S-matrices.

We consider the Pohlmeyer-reduced formulation of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring. It is constructed by introducing new variables which are algebraically related to supercoset current components so that the Virasoro conditions are automatically solved. The reduced theory is a gauged WZW model supplemented with an integrable potential and fermionic terms that ensure its UV finiteness. The original superstring theory and its reduced counterpart are closely related at the classical level, and we conjecture that they remain related at the quantum level as well, in the sense that their quantum partition functions evaluated on respective classical solutions are equal. We provide evidence for the validity of this conjecture at the one-loop level, i.e. at the first non-trivial order of the semiclassical expansion near several classes of classical solutions.
