Thanks to the special conditions of the cave, the woods that makes up the structures that have survived until today has been examined within the scope of this study. All wood flooring elements examined in this study consist of water-filled wood, except for one example (NNDK-1), which has semi-water-filled properties. In the construction of the wooden floor, one oak species from the white oak group (probably Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) and one pine species from the Sylvestris group (probably Pinus nigra Arnold), Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner and Acer L. sp. were used. In addition, the most used genus in its construction was oak (Quercus L., section Quercus). The inhabitants of İnönü cave in the Late Bronze Age must have met their wood needs from nearby local resources. Wood anatomical analysis pointed out the occurrence of riverine forests formed by Black alder along the streams and temperate broadleaf and mixed forests formed by Sessile oak, maple, and Black pine in İnönü cave and its vicinity. These, together with others like Fagus orientalis Lipsky, Carpinus betulus L., Carpinus orientalis Mill., Salix alba L., and Populus nigra L., are the genera/species present in the region today.

The developments that took place in Anatolia are closely associated with the climatic, geographical, and geomorphological conditions of this special region. Copper deposits are found close to the surface in some regions resulting in the first documented use of native copper in the Neolithic Age, and extensive use of metals and early mining activities were documented here in the Bronze Age. Gold deposits are also abundant in Anatolia; however, archaeological investigations so far indicate that this metal was used later than in neighboring regions such as the Balkans. Recent excavations at İnönü cave, a site situated in the western coastal Black Sea Region of Anatolia, revealed important evidence for the early use of gold. Gold beads were found in a small ceramic pot in layer V (4300-4000 BC) which have chronological and typological parallels with early examples from the Balkans. Thus İnönü cave provides the earliest evidence that gold was used in the Chalcolithic Age in Anatolia. In this paper we offer a preliminary evaluation of the gold beads from İnönü cave and describe their place in the history of metal use and metallurgy in Anatolia. Additionally, it was aimed to obtain some preliminary information about the production processes of the beads by P-XRF and SEM analyses.

Two main types of burials have been noted, cremation and inhumation. While the types of graves differed as simple inhumations and pithos burials, cremated ones were either in simple pits or as urn burials. Distribution and selecton of grave goods was more or less homogenuous through the burials. Some oven-like fire places areas detected within the cemetery area suggested the practices related to funeral eatings. When evaluated analogically, the cemetery findings indicated that Arıbaş Cemetery was used between the Assyrian Trade Colonies Age and the Old Hittite Period. Some objects among the grave goods provide informations concerning the daily life, age and gender, beliefs and professions of grave owners.

The data achieved through the excavations carried out in the cave in 2017 and 2018 have demonstrated that the level II of the cave was settled at the beginning of the Early Iron Age. While there are still many unanswered questions regarding the end of the Late Bronze Age-the beginning of the Early Iron Age in Anatolia and the Eastern Mediterranean, there is almost no information about the Western Black Sea cultures of this period. The present study aims to outline the culture of the Western Black Sea Region at the end of the 2nd millennium BC and to show the relationship of this culture with the communities of the Balkans by the detailed evaluation of the data on the level II of İnönü Cave.

While 93 of the beads, the vast majority of which were produced from steatite, were produced from agate, 27 of them were produced from gold, 1 of them was produced from electrum, and 1 of them was produced from radiolarite. C14 analyses that were performed to obtain the absolute dates of this level, which bears the traces of the first settlers of the cave, and to date this group of finds, revealed that this level belonged to the last quarter of the 5th millennium BC (cal. 4260-3976 BC). The SEM-EDS analyses of 7 beads selected from among the steatite beads in İnönü Cave were performed to understand steatite bead production techniques in the Chalcolithic Age. Furthermore, their detailed images were obtained with a polarization microscope. These studies revealed that steatite beads consisted of two sections, including the inner main body/core and the section covering the outer part of the bead, and produced by heat treatment. Based on these data, beads were attempted to be experimentally produced in the laboratory environment. The definition, analogical and chronological evaluation of these steatite beads and SEM-EDS analyses and experimental practices are comprehensively presented in this study.

Aside from acting as a distraction and toy for infants, rattles also play a crucial role in the movement, co-ordination and social development of children. Despite their longevity, inferred importance and wealth of archaeological data, little archaeological research into the appearance and development of the rattle has been undertaken until now. This paper presents recently undertaken research, focusing on production techniques, functional features, and typological changes from the initial appearance of the rattle in Anatolia, into the Iron Age.

Beş ayrı kültür katmanı tespit edilen İnönü Mağarası’nda gerçekleştirilen kazılarda Kalkolitik Çağ’dan başlayarak aralıklarla Ortaçağ’a kadar uzanan bulgularla karşılaşılmıştır.

Ereğli ilçesi sınırlarında yer alan ve Klasik Çağ’ın en önemli liman kentlerinden olan Herakleia Pontika söz konusu dönemde Karadeniz’in kıyısında yer alan bütün kentler içinde ayrıcalıklı bir yere sahiptir. Bu önemine rağmen Herakleia Pontika antik kenti arkeolojik açıdan yeterince araştırıl(a)mamıştır.
