Anchoritism is a very interesting phenomenon. It is richly represented in medieval literary sources, and has been much discussed by modern literary scholars. Archaeologically, however, it is one of the most poorly represented aspects of medieval life and there are many issues to discuss. Anchoritism may seem very extreme to us today, but to people in the medieval period, it would have been quite a familiar and a revered decision. At the heart of the anchoritic ways of life is the search for solitude and withdrawal from public life in order to concentrate on prayer, spirituality and becoming closer to God. Both men and women became anchorites, with females being known as anchoresses.
The anchorite would be ritually walled up in a ceremony that included the last rites. This was more practical than spiritual, in case the anchorite became ill and a priest could not get to them in time. Anchoritism was very demanding both mentally and physically; therefore candidates had to be interviewed to determine whether or not they were suitable to become an anchorite. Patronage was very important as it provided the anchorite with the support they needed to survive in the anchorhold. The terms “hermit” and “anchorite” were interchangeable until the 15th century. This can cause some confusion when trying to locate anchorholds. This was highlighted on my field trips, especially at Anchor Church at Ingleby.
Sources contemporary to the period, including the Ancrene Wisse, The Shewings of Julian of Norwich and The Booke of Margery of Kempe provide an account of the anchoritic phenomenon. The study of anchoritism has become a largely feminist subject, with the main scholars being Liz Herbert McAvoy and Ann Warren. My undergraduate thesis provides a basis for further research on anchoritism and although it answered some of my questions, it showed me that there are a lot more questions to ask in the future.

This essay discusses general tectonic activity before focusing on a specific case study of þingvellier in Iceland. þingvellier is an important part of Icelandic life and traditions and has played host to a number of important decisions. I hope that this essay gives an insight into the sites importance within the context of both tectonic activity and in the history of Iceland.

This essay discusses the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites in Wiltshire, England. It gives a brief overview of the history, archaeological work and management of the two aspects of the World Heritage Site: Stonehenge and Avebury. The future of this site is also discussed as is its UNESCO status and the main theme of this essay is the need to look at these sites as a whole and not separate entities as is currently the case.

industries and the use of WHS and heritage sites as locations adds an extra dimension to the site. This paper shall largely focus on the issues and recommendations that came about after conducting field research and the subsequent qualitative and quantitative analysis as well as looking to the future at what can be done in this area to address the impact of film-induced tourism on heritage sites. This paper provides an overview of the authors' master thesis and addresses the effects of World Heritage Sites and heritage sites which are used as filming locations on visitor perceptions of a site and their decision to visit a site. Film-induced tourism is becoming increasingly popular and it is important to assess its impacts on World Heritage Sites and heritage sites used as locations. The integration of the different aspects of heritage and filming at a site including elements and the communication between all the different parties involved are also addressed. The case study used is the popular television series Game of Thrones focusing on various locations in Northern Ireland and Dubrovnik, Croatia. The paper aims to provide a starting platform for future research on heritage sites used as filming locations and the possible impacts that this may have.

This master thesis addresses the issue of how the use of World Heritage Sites and other heritage sites as filming locations can influence the decision of a tourist to visit them and how it can impact upon their perception of the site. Film induced tourism is becoming more and more popular and it is important to assess the impact that this has on the significance of both World Heritage Sites and heritage sites. The thesis shall also address the integration of the film and heritage elements of the site and their promotion as well as the communication between each of the parties involved in the sites’ management. The popular HBO series Game of Thrones is used as a case study with a specific focus on the Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast (Northern Ireland) and the Old City of Dubrovnik (Croatia). At each location visitor surveys were carried out in order to measure how tourists decisions were influenced by the series and interviews were undertaken with local tourist officers and tour guides. This study aims to be a basis for future research in this area.

Iron Age tankards are stave-built wooden vessels completely covered or bound in copper-alloy sheet. The distinctive copper-alloy handles of these vessels frequently display intricate ‘Celtic’ or La Tène art styles. They are characterised by their often highly original designs, complex manufacturing processes, and variety of find contexts. No systematic analysis of this artefact class has been undertaken since Corcoran’s (1952a) original study was published in Volume 18 of these Proceedings. New evidence from the Portable Antiquities Scheme for England and Wales and recent excavations have more than quadrupled the number of known examples (139 currently). It is therefore necessary and timely to re-examine tankards, and to reintegrate them into current debates surrounding material culture in later prehistory. Tankards originate in the later Iron Age and their use continued throughout much of the Roman period. As such, their design was subject to varying influences over time, both social and aesthetic. Their often highly individual form and decoration is testament to this fact and has created challenges in developing a workable typology (Corcoran 1952a; 1952b; 1957; Spratling 1972; Jackson 1990). A full examination of the decoration, construction, wear and repair, dating, and deposition contexts will allow for a reassessment of the role of tankards within the social and cultural milieu of later prehistoric and early Roman Britain.
