However, despite the interventions made and the supposed relevance of the archaeological settlement, only the preliminary news of the first archaeological excavations carried out in 1987 and 1990 are known. These were the most extensive works carried out at the site and provided a significant set of artefacts that have remained partially unpublished. In this regard, rather than reporting new findings at the site, this paper aims to explore the data gathered in those campaigns. A special focus is given to the study of material remains, which constitute the fundamental element to link the site to what will be a turning point in the occupation of this territory-the end of the 1st millennium BC.

The study presents a new approach to the cultural background of the vessel, notably its connection to Eastern Greek models. This makes this Portuguese vase the westernmost known case of this type. The current analysis intends first of all to reinforce and diffuse knowledge of Santa Olaia, a site thought to be the furthermost orientalising settlement of the Atlantic coastline. At a broader level, this study intends to stimulate the debate on the diffusion and circulation of Archaic Greek pottery in the western territories, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula.

¨¨¨¨ Although with a long occupation, Santa Olaia is mostly known for its evidence of the Iron Age. However, the remaining phases are of equal importance for understanding its regional affirmation strategy over time. In this case, based on the review of the documentation and remains from the archaeological excavations carried out, the aim is to compile the elements referring to the Roman occupation of the site and propose a narrative framework. The analysis of the gathered data seems to indicate a persistent occupation from the Republican period to the beginning of the 6th century, marked, however, by the notion of cyclical transfiguration of the site. Given the variations observed in the archaeological record, potential lines of interpretation are presented to explain the changes in the functional nature and relevance of this emblematic site of the Mondego estuary.

Usually connected to the metallurgical production and trade, the site would have welcomed other manufacturing activities, including pottery production. Indeed, due to the pottery’s exotic and exceptional character the ceramics studies have always stud up in the whole study of the site. Moreover, some studies stood at the forefront of research at the time. However, in general terms, this subject experienced a new conceptual development concerning the interpretation of certain colonialist phenomena, with implications for the study of the collection in question. In this regard and in the context of an ongoing doctoral project, the work of decoding and reinterpreting the archaeological records and the implementation of archaeometric research, using neutron activation analysis (NAA), propel a new theoretical stance towards the study of Santa Olaia’s material culture. This combined approach thus highlights the pottery sector’s role in the context of the productive economy of the establishment and denounces the significance of the pottery produced locally and regionally in the entire ceramic set.

Nevertheless, at present, the nature and identity of the site are still surrounded by uncertainty and controversy. It is surprising that this settlement, linked to the Phoenicians, remains scarcely known, despite having been discovered more than a century ago and extensively excavated. This paper results from the renewal of research about the site, planned within a broader doctoral project. In order to reach a comprehensive view about it, this analysis includes the systematization, re-examination and comparison of archaeological materials and contextual data from different archaeological interventions (old and new). Starting with the state of the art, the objectives for this text are to sketch the current stage of research and to outline the main analytical strategies adopted. This takes into consideration this settlement’s characteristics and research plans, which are emblematic in the scene of Phoenician- Punic “trading diaspora” at the western side of the Iberian Peninsula.

Given the regional integration of Arraiolos, we conducted an approach to aspects of the material culture, particularly with regard to ceramic production, as the main resource for understanding their inclusion in a broader cultural reality, within the horizon of the Bronze West End. It takes place thus an analysis in triple perspective: at a local level, describing the individual site profile; at a regional level, considering its setting in the surrounding settlement network and in a broader plan, isolating evidences of participation in supra-regional cultural routes.

Late Bronze Age/ Early Iron Age pattern burnished pottery is one of the most widespread pottery groups from the greater Southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Such pottery has frequently been interpreted as having a “special” character, linked to social inequalities or ritualistic functions. In order to address the title proposed this text briefly discusses the formal typology of a pottery set found at the protohistoric site of Arraiolos’ Castle (S. Pedro de Arraiolos) and archaeometrically characterizes its mineralogy. It finally discusses if the distinction between decorated and undecorated pottery pervaded, or not, the entire chaîne opératoire of production.

The building rises at the topographically most vulnerable point of the walled fence, in the passage between the al-madinâ (the ancient part of the town) and the suburb. It is an emblematic monument of the city, controversial and already widely intervened. The last renovation work on the façades in 2011 provided research clues and displayed how much still escapes us of the transformations operated in the monument. A new interpretation and chronology is now presented for the lower bas-relief frame on the door, the discovery of a defensive reinforcement element of the entrance, in the superior vault, and data that complements the understanding of the original aspect of the upper sculptural panel

This paper presents the archaeological monitoring of these works and intends to address some issues on the constitution, functioning and changes occurred in this space.

Sra da Vitória (Coimbra) enabled the identification of material remains related to the old Jewish quarter, which, in the Medieval Era, was located at the NW slope, outside the city wall. The excavation carried out covered the few remaining contexts (structures and related occupational levels) with a chronological assignment between the 12th and 14th centuries. The material exhumed in this work, and here reported, although sparse, helps to set up the ceramic tableware in use in the context of the medieval Jewish quarter.

The building, witness of colorful historical events, owned by the University of Coimbra, was in 2014 rehabilitated. In this context, it was ensured an archaeological safeguard intervention that although confined to the sphere of the construction work, provided information that justifies a knowledge review of this constructive document.

This paper concerns an assemblage of Pre-Roman materials (mostly pottery) recovered during the latest archaeological excavations at the former Roman forum of Aeminium (presently the Machado de Castro National Museum, MNMC, in Coimbra). Despite proceeding from secondary deposits, these finds provide a rare testimony of the earlier human occupations known in Coimbra. Its study aims to develop the actual state of knowledge about Pre-Roman occupations in the city and surrounding region while raising new perspectives on the subject.

known context of the Phoenician settlement of Santa Olaia (Figueira
da Foz) housed in the Archaeological Museum of Carmo (Lisbon).
The study presents a new approach to the cultural background of
the vessel, notably its connection to Eastern Greek models. This
makes this Portuguese vase the westernmost known case of this
type. The current analysis intends first of all to reinforce and diffuse
knowledge of Santa Olaia, a site thought to be the furthermost
orientalising settlement of the Atlantic coastline. At a broader
level, this study intends to stimulate the debate on the diffusion
and circulation of Archaic Greek pottery in the western territories,
particularly in the Iberian Peninsula.
I Idade do Ferro de Coimbra.

Although with a long occupation, Santa Olaia is mostly known for its evidence of the Iron Age.
(Figueira da Foz) is a reference in the study of Iron
Age orientalising environments in the Atlantic
façade. Usually connected to the metallurgical
production and trade, the site would have welcomed
other manufacturing activities, including pottery
production.
Indeed, due to the pottery’s exotic and exceptional
character the ceramics studies have always stud up
in the whole study of the site. Moreover, some
studies stood at the forefront of research at the time.
However, in general terms, this subject experienced
a new conceptual development concerning the
interpretation of certain colonialist phenomena,
with implications for the study of the collection
in question.
In this regard and in the context of an ongoing
doctoral project, the work of decoding and
reinterpreting the archaeological records and the
implementation of archaeometric research, using
neutron activation analysis (NAA), propel a new
theoretical stance towards the study of Santa Olaia’s
material culture. This combined approach thus
highlights the pottery sector’s role in the context of
the productive economy of the establishment and
denounces the significance of the pottery produced
locally and regionally in the entire ceramic set.
Mediterranean influences (Phoenician, Punic or Tartessic) on the Atlantic façade of the Iberian
Peninsula. Nevertheless, at present, the nature and identity of the site are still surrounded by
uncertainty and controversy. It is surprising that this settlement, linked to the Phoenicians, remains
scarcely known, despite having been discovered more than a century ago and extensively excavated.
This paper results from the renewal of research about the site, planned within a broader doctoral
project. In order to reach a comprehensive view about it, this analysis includes the systematization,
re-examination and comparison of archaeological materials and contextual data from different
archaeological interventions (old and new).
Starting with the state of the art, the objectives for this text are to sketch the current stage of
research and to outline the main analytical strategies adopted. This takes into consideration this
settlement’s characteristics and research plans, which are emblematic in the scene of Phoenician-
Punic “trading diaspora” at the western side of the Iberian Peninsula.
