This dissertation focuses on the archaeological activity carried out since the 1930s at the Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro, the former location of the forum of Aeminium and the episcopal palace of Coimbra. All these archaeological interventions, particularly the most recent ones, resulted in a unique wealth of information, based on an extensive repertoire of stratigraphic records (which need to be revised) and on the sheer volume of (generally unstudied) recovered materials. This study therefore addresses some research gaps, particularly concerning material culture, and the absence of a synthesis study of the monument’s history. Thus, the study combines the universe of archaeological data gathered throughout the various interventions in order to review and extend our knowledge of the structural transformation of this heritage complex, from the original Roman forum of Aeminium to the late 16th century episcopal palace. The fusion of different platforms of analysis, which was conventionally designated as an urban archaeology essay, enabled the clarification of issues concerning the building and supports the architectural reconstitution proposals already presented. The conclusion is, once again, that this historical document, alive and lived continuously during the last two millennia and where the past is present through its overlapping volumes, despite having been made, unmade and remade throughout this chronological frame, has never ceased to accommodate to its primordial root the cryptoportico of Aeminium.

Sugar cane cultivation, attempted in Portugal during the late Middle Ages, played a major role in the 15th- and 16th-century settlement of the Atlantic islands. Written sources attest to the importance of sugar mills both for the occupation of the Azores, Cape Verde and particularly Madeira and São Tomé and Príncipe archipelagos and for the establishment of new insular societies and trade circuits. Neither the material remains relating to this process nor the impact of this new product in Portugal are well known. However, a number of archaeological research projects conducted in recent years have contributed data regarding the production of the ceramic forms used in the sugar refining process, mainly originating from the regions of Lisbon and Aveiro. These objects were manufactured and distributed in enormous quantities throughout the North Atlantic area. Their study provides information on the logistics of sugar agriculture, a characteristic feature of early colonial societies.

I e II d.C.
ENG: In the scope of FCT project IGAEDIS, focussing on the agrarian landscapes around ciuitas Igaeditanorum, archaeological excavations were made in the rural settlement of Terra Grande (Idanha-a-Velha, Castelo Branco).
These revealed a building of substantial size whose material culture points to a chronology between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Several sediment samples were recovered to undergo archaeobotanical analysis in the scope of the FCT project B-ROMAN.
This paper will present the first archaeological and archaeobotanical results from this rural settlement in the framework of the dynamics that shaped the rural landscape and vegetation in the northern hinterland of Lusitania among the changes observed in first centuries of the Empire.

Through this paper, we present the results of the first specific study of the Late Antique pottery from Idanha-a-Velha, provided by the analysis of four different archaeological contexts located in the city. Firstly, the pottery ensembles of each context will be analysed separately, proposing a singular chronology for each of them. Lately, they will be analysed altogether, trying to identify the commercial connections of the city from the 3rd to the 5th century.

In 1921 Coimbra University Press published, in monographic format, two crucial works for the study of Modern pottery in Portugal. Algumas palavras a respeito de púcaros de Portugal ("Some words about Portuguese pottery cups") by Carolina Michaëlis de Vasconcellos and A cerâmica coimbrã no século XVI ("Coimbra’s pottery in the 16th century") by Joaquim Martins Teixeira de Carvalho gather the first documentary references to pottery production, since then, repeatedly cited in essays dedicated to this subject.
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of these editions, a summary is presented concerning the tableware intended for the consumption of liquids or beverage containers (mostly water) in Coimbra during the 15th and 16th centuries, based on the collection exhumed in archaeological surveys carried out in the old episcopal palace of Coimbra. As a result, the regional morpho-typological evolutionary framework of these productions that notably flourished from the mid-16th century onwards has been established.

This text presents a group of imported pottery having different origins but common to other Early Modern domestic contexts in Portugal. This tableware was found during archaeological excavations at the old Episcopal Palace of Coimbra (Portugal), showing up alongside local productions. Despite being less common than local pottery, imported wares are quite significant because they reveal commercial circuits and validate the economic standing and sociocultural significance of their users.

The paper presents the results of the archaeological work of diagnostic at the site of Sete Figueiras 2 (Odiáxere, Lagos), carried out in 2016 within the sphere of the patrimonial determinants within the Urbanization Plan of Meia Praia.
In addition to the Neo-Chalcolithic and Late Bronze/Iron Age testimonies it was possible to record an area with negative structures dated from the Islamic period. The materials here presented were recovered from the filling of these structures and allow us to state that these would have been dumped during the Almohad period (12th-13th century).
The combined interpretation of the known remains in the surrounding area shows that it`s not possible to dissociate the analysis and understanding of Sete Figueiras 2 from the other known settlements with similar chronology in the proximity. Challenging the scarcity of data still available we dare to draw some deductions about the Islamic occupation (Almohad) in Meia Praia in Lagos.

It is presented the stratigraphic context, the typology and architecture of the graves and the related funerary furniture retrieved, as it is sought to integrate these new findings in the overall picture of the Ossonoba’s burial spaces already known.
In this intervention it was also identified, for the first time in this northwest part of the city, traces of Medieval Islamic times. This context, witnessed by a simple detritic pit sealed between the 12th and 13th centuries, allows us to relaunch the discussion about Ocsonoba's peri-urban occupation strategy.

The paper presents the pottery collection recovered in the filling of the upper choir dome of Santo António’s church in Aveiro. The conditions and context of finding allow to assign this lot to a precise chronology (1524) associated with the first phase of construction of the building and the exhumation of numerous entire and defective containers testifies to their local production. In addition to the repertoire of utilitarian ceramics and sugar pottery already well known in Aveiro, it highlights the group of several olive jars (anforetas) that were practically missing from the local archaeological record and which are now categorically identified as produced in this city.
The size and constitution of the set, the accuracy of their chronological assignment and the determination of its local production, shows the relevance of the finding and justify this first exposure.

Several archaeological interventions at the Machado de Castro National Museum, once the forum and cryptoportico of the Roman city of Aeminium, allowed the identification of several archaeological contexts, created by landfilling and the burial of negative structures, dating between the end of the 9th century and the beginning of the 13th century, and the recovery of a large pottery assemblage.
This paper discusses a preliminary approach to the materials, characterized by varied technical, formal and stylistic solutions. Overall, they point towards a close coexistence and assimilation of southern Islamic traits, associated and combined with northern Christian influences. On the other hand, it can be stated that, throughout the studied period, the evolution of pottery characteristics does not simultaneously reproduce the abrupt political and religious changes that the city was subjected to.

The archaeological actions carried out during the project of enlargement and renovation of the Machado de Castro National Museum (Coimbra, Portugal) enabled the identification, at the southern side of the building, of a set of Early Modern Era materials resulting from discharges of the old Episcopal Palace. These well stratified layers, allow an easy and reliable interpretation and represent four distinct deposition phases (between the 15th and late 16th centuries), as dated by the nearly 400 coins recovered.
Amongst these dumping layers we highlight the last one (ranging roughly between 1578 and 1592), it shows an unusually well preserved and abundant variety of ceramic portraying the palace`s table set in use after the middle 16th century. In conjunction with the predominant occurrence of coarse ware red pottery products, as well as minor amounts of imported items, there is a significant assortment of faience.
We intend to describe the morphologic, typological and decorative aspects of this collection which we believe may concur to enlighten the discussion concerning the first stanniferous glazed ceramic productions in Portugal, where Coimbra certainly played a relevant role.
The Machado de Castro National Museum faience collection contains 80 plates with decorations showing oriental influence and another 21 from the latter end of the 17th century, where this influence is completely absent. Various authors have been including these objects in chronologically organized typological groups, assuming an evolution of the decorative themes during the 17th century. Based on the classification initially proposed by Reynaldo dos Santos, but adjusting it in conformity to the more recent research, five cycles of development where defined where the existing plates belonging to the sixteen hundreds were grouped according to their different decorative motifs.
The study of this collection lead us to determine that to each decorative group/cycle corresponds an equal representation of specific motifs on the objects' underside. This practice that disappeared in the late 17th century was surely related to the observation of the motifs present on the undersides of the Chinese original porcelain.
In this review we attempt to introduce and expand on this subject, wishing to contribute to a broader study of the topic which has not yet been tackled satisfactorily.

This paper presents the results of a circumscribed archaeological intervention that took place in the historic center of Lagos (Rua 5 de Outubro, n.º 36) which contributes to improve the understanding of the medieval city wall device. In the context of this rescue intervention it was possible to identify and locate, for the first time, the presence of a ditch that follows the west side of the defensive enclosure.
In addition to the description of the formal features of the structure, are also displayed the recorded stratigraphic context and the associated archaeological materials that allows to chronologically corroborate the rhythm of the constructive actions related to the urban expansion of Lagos in the Renaissance period.

Extensive archaeological interventions at the old forum and cryptoportico of Aeminium (Coimbra, Portugal), now the Machado de Castro National Museum, allowed collecting several pottery sets. This text highlights a specific red fabric group of vessels, characterized by the display of white painted brushstrokes. This pottery came from three different contexts, securely dated to the 1st half of the 15th century, a period when intensive architectural reforms were made to the old Episcopal Palace of Coimbra, installed at this location during nearly a millennium.

The Machado de Castro’s National Museum is located over the built space with longer and uninterrupted occupational diachrony at Coimbra, dated, at least, from the beginnings of the 1st century of our era. The new project for the museum’s expansion and renovation (recently completed) alongside the richness of the archaeological and patrimonial remains assembled in this urban place, lead to the execution of a previous and follow up extensive program of archaeological work.
In this text, it is intended to provide a record of this archaeological intervention and explain the main methodological lines and strategies which guided the rescue archaeological process. At the same time, the settings of this experience give rise to a brief reflection over some transverse problems common to Portuguese urban archaeology.

The Augustan Aeminium forum, centered on Coimbra`s historic hill, was significantly expanded in the mid-first century AD. This addition sat on the monumental cryptoporticus raised on the sloping ground to the west. This situation determined the reorganization of the urban design of the west block to the forum, including, the redial of one of the the city`s main road - the decumanus maximus.
In this text, starting from a renewed analysis of the archaeological structures under the new administrative building of the Machado de Castro’s National Museum (Beco das Condeixeiras), we rehearse new readings, particularly of the moment that preceded that urban renewal.

This dissertation focuses on the group of archaeological interventions that were carried out, more or less continuously, since the 30’s at the National Museum Machado de Castro. This site was once occupied by the forum of the Roman city of Aeminium and subsequently by the Episcopal Palace of Coimbra. The archaeological interventions, especially those carried out in recent years (2006-2008), provided a unique source of information based on extensive stratigraphic records (in need of revision) and on the collection of a high volume of archaeological remains (particularly pottery) which remained greatly unstudied. The work here presented emerged in answer to those research gaps, mostly concerning the material culture and the absence of a synthesis about the monument’s overall history. Therefore, the study combines the universe of archaeological data (gathered over several interventions at the site) compiling and justifying the current state of knowledge about the organic transformation of this heritage complex since the installation of the Roman forum of Aeminium to the Episcopal Palace at the end of the 16th century. In this study pottery was considered the main archaeological evidence due to its extent (in quantity and chronology) and potential. It boosted the recovery of information concerning this site’s occupation and, simultaneously, it bridged important gaps in the historical framework known for the city of Coimbra. The finding contexts of the archaeological remains are mostly sealed and safely dated, testifying the continuous occupation of this space in the long diachrony that goes from the 1st to the 17th centuries. The fusion and coherent review of all these analytical platforms (in what is conventionally called an urban archaeology essay) allowed to solve specific questions still posed by the building and to support the reconstitution proposals previously stated. Once again it is concluded that this historical monument (alive and lived continuously during the last two millennia and where the past is present through its overlapping volumes) despite being made, unmade and remade throughout this time span, never stopped being adjusted to its primary root – the cryptoporticus of Aeminium.

The archaeological surveys carried out during the recent rehabilitation of the Machado de Castro National Museum (Coimbra, Portugal) enabled the identification, at the southern side of the building, of a set of Modern Era materials resulting from discharges of the old Episcopal Palace. These well stratified layers, allowing an easy and reliable interpretation, represent four distinct phases of deposition (between the 15th and 16th centuries).
Amongst these dumping layers we highlight the last one that offered a well preserved and abundant variety of ceramic portraying the palace`s table set in use after the middle 16th century. In conjunction with the predominant occurrence of commonly used red pottery products there is a significant assortment of glazed ceramics.
We intend to describe the morphologic, typological and manufacture aspects of this important local production (Coimbra), sometimes confused with others southern Iberian Peninsula productions.

This paper concerns the protohistoric site of “S. Pedro de Arraiolos” (Portugal) and its relevance in southwestern Iberian Peninsula during the Late Bronze Age. Recent archaeological excavations, whose results are presented here, allowed the recovery and analysis of stratigraphic data and material remains, mainly pottery, which will be emphasized. Furthermore, from the evaluation and combination of data, an interpretation of the site in aspects such as the internal structure, the positioning in the regional network and wider cultural influence circles is attempted.
