Medieval and Postmedieval Archaeology

Between 1806 and 1865 alum was produced at three factories near Bonn-Niederholtorf. Archive research, field surveys, lidar data and trial excavations have revealed vast remains of the most important alum producing site within the kingdom of Prussia.
Brown coal was used as raw material for the chemical processes, which included burning the coal at low temperature, elutriating the newly generated aluminum sulfat and the creation of the alum. The process had an impact on the surroundig country side due to mining subsidence damage, the remains of the three factories as well as large areas covered by slag and ash dumps.

In őrtilos, at the őrtilos-zrínyi-Újvár archaeological site, between 25 July 2016 and 26 May 2017, archaeological excavations  were  performed  supported  by  the  national  Cultural Fund (nKA) 207134/00284 project. In 2017, we have uncovered a 14.5 m deep well within the fortress. In the well there were human bones, military clothing and equipment remains found. during the exploration we could find a timber construction, which is without parallel according to our previous knowledge. the shaft of the well is octagonal, lined with oak planks.

Záchranný archeologický výzkum v ploše bývalých kasáren Jiřího z Poděbrad na náměstí Republiky v Praze na Novém Městě byl a dosud je jedním z nejrozsáhlejších plošných odkryvů v centru Pražské památkové rezervace. Samotná terénní část výzkumu, které předcházely zjišťovací výkopy v letech 1996 a 1998/99, proběhla v letech 2003-2006. Příspěvek zhodnocuje zvolenou strategii a metodiku terénního výzkumu v konfrontaci se stavem jeho současného zpracování a možnostmi práce s dosavadními výsledky v dalších letech.

The Kyklades or Cycladic Islands have always been popular amongst archaeologists working on the Aegean Bronze Age and the 'glorious' Classical Greek past. In contrast, not much light has been shed upon aspects of post-Roman life on the islands. Research into the post-medieval period has been a subject mainly for historians and folklorists. This paper attempts to explore aspects of the lifestyle of the peoples who inhabited this island group throughout the more recent, yet most neglected centuries of Greek history, using archaeological, textual and other sources and methods. My aim is to reconstruct everyday rural life in Greece, by focusing on the domestic sphere and addressing questions concerning society and the domestic material culture of a littoral area that has remained traditional until very recently.
This paper examines some .first results of the CYRE.P. (Cyclades Research Project) and introduces examples concerning the domestic material culture of the late medieval and post-medieval periods (early 13th-late 19th centuries) in the Aegean Islands of the Cyclades, with particular reference to housing, furniture and internal.fittings, costumes and embroideries.

Pitts Theology Library and four Central German museums are proud to bring you Lucas Cranach’s famous image of the Reformation, “Law and Grace.” Through this image Cranach illustrated the essence of Luther’s message, that faith is the only way to receive God’s gift of grace. With the help of highlights from German museums and the Pitts Theology Library’s Richard C. Kessler Reformation Collection, this exhibition explores Cranach’s masterpiece and explains its cultural and historic impact through the ages, up to the champions of costly grace, Berlin’s Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Atlanta’s Martin Luther King Jr. This exhibit bridges centuries and continents and provides a fitting prelude to the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses in 2017. The exhibition is sponsored by the German Foreign Ministry and The Halle Foundation in Atlanta.

The aim of the work is to present selected issues related to the table culture of Silesian burghers in the late Middle Ages and early modern times, through the analysis of artifacts made of materials commonly used in that period, such as ceramics, wood, metal and glass. The analysis was based mainly on archaeological sources, which were described in detail and illustrated in the catalog. In addition, writing materials and iconographic relics were used as auxiliary sources. The dissertation takes into account the changes in tableware, the issue of washing hands, the content of ideological artifacts, commercial contacts and social diversity, as well as changes in customs in the culture of the table.

Розглянуто способи орнаментації, що використовувалися для декорування глиняних виробів ХVІ-ХVІІІ століть, виявлених на території Середньої Наддніпрянщини; проаналізовано їх особливості й хронологію. Прослідковано можливі шляхи появи й розвитку різних технік орнаментації. Запропоновано типологічну схему різновидів декору, а також відтворено деякі з мотивів орнаментації, що трапляються на мальованих мисках означеного періоду. / The methods of ornamentation used to decorate the clay products of the 16th – 18th centuries, discovered
in the Middle Dnipro region, are considered, their features and chronology are analysed. The possible ways
of appearance and development of different ornamentation techniques have been investigated. A typological
scheme of varieties of decor is offered and some of the motifs of ornamentation found on the painted bowls
of a certain period are reproduced. It is emphasized that the decoration of clayware is an important historical
source that allows to track changes, indicate the directions of influence and borrowing. At the same time,
it has some semantic load, reflecting the outlook of the population at that time.
It is possible to offer such a way of development of different techniques of ornamentation of clayware
of the 16th – 18th centuries. In the 16th century, the only kind of ornamentation was relief. Its elements are
simplified - drawn lines, corrugations, protections. At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, relief ornaments
became more complicated - the use of a wheeled stamp, «combs», «raspberries» began. At the same time, there
appeared a painted decor - coloring and underglazed contour painting, which continued to exist throughout
the period, going back to the present day.
Two-tone painting of the glazed ware and cropping also appeared. In the 18th century, ornament made
with single stamps dominated on the plates with coloured glazed. In the second half of the 18th century,
a wheeled stamp was widely used on smoked pottery, the common ornament of which were mesh rhombuses
between vertical lines. In the first half of the 17th century, underglazed painting was only a contour. Marbling
appeared from the second half of the 17th century, and in the middle of the 18th century there was other
classic techniques.

The book discusses white pottery from Solec. This term refers to the earthenware pottery made from clays fired to white, beige and yellowish colour, dated from the late Middle Ages to the beginning of  the modern era, found during the archaeological excavations in Solec nad Wisłą (in Little Poland). The chronological scope of this study covers the period between the end of the 14th century and the mid-17th century. The main objective of this work is to analyse the white pottery and create its comprehensive characteristics. This analysis covers issues concerning the technology of production and morphology of wares. It comprises research on the composition of ceramic pastes as wel as manufacturing and ornamentation technoques, forms, types, and sizes of the vessles and their individual parts. These issues have been presesnted in four chronological groups. The author also attempted to identify the provenence of the vessels analysed here. In addition, the study undertaken in this book required presentation of research problems and establishing the advencement of research on the pottery wares discussed.

In the fifth floor of the southern tower of the Rumeli Hisarı fortress, on the shore of the Bosphorus, built by Mehmed II in anticipation of the final assault against Constantinople, prisoners were imprisoned who captured during the long thirteen years war (1593-1606) and afterwards. We have some of the names graffitied on the stone boulders of the cells in which they were imprisoned. Reported in a volume of 1918 by Bertrand Bareilles, they have never been published in their entirety. Not all of them can be easily read. Some people appear to have been of high social status (probably an ambassador, a pharmacist, a treasurer). Their provenance is quite varied: from what they write we know that they came from present-day Slovakia, from Swabia, from Italy (Siena).
Their deciphering and publication offers a new document for a better understanding of the complex relations between the Christian and the Islamic worlds during the thirteen years war (1593-1606) and immediately after.

It has long been argued that any clay tobacco pipes found in New Zealand were either the result of imports from Europe, or quite small scale production of pipes in Australia. Recent research, prompted by a chance find in the New Zealand newspaper archives, however, now seems to suggest that pipes were being manufactured in New Zealand from the early 1880s through to at least 1908, using locally sourced materials.

De afgelopen veertig jaar zijn door de afdeling Erfgoed van
de gemeente ‘s Hertogenbosch vele keurloden
opgegraven. Particulieren vonden op hun beurt vooral in
de stort van het Burgemeester Loeffplein ook vele loden.
Beide collecties zijn geïnventariseerd en worden voor het
eerst in deze rapportage ontsloten. Hierbij komen niet
alleen de lokaal gezette keurloden aan bod maar ook de
elders gezette en in ‘s Hertogenbosch teruggevonden
loden. Bij elkaar vertellen zij het verhaal over de
textielproductie in en de textielhandel naar deze
belangrijke Brabantse stad.

L'articolo discute il tema dell'archeologia postmedievale italiana, a partire dagli anni Settanta del XX secolo, che ne hanno visto la nascita all'interno dell' archeologia globale e del processo complessivo di ripensamento teorico e metodologico dell'archeologia italiana.  Il rapporto con le fonti scritte, orali e di altra natura appare certamente basilare per una "text-aided archaeology" come l'archeologia postmedievale e ne costituisce la ricchezza per la ricostruzione storiografica, rispetto alle altre archeologie.
L'articolo mette in evidenza, per le dinamiche che hanno portato alla fondazione della disciplina, il ruolo dell'archeologia urbana, che e' per sua natura un'archeologia "della continuità", leggibile nelle sequenze stratigrafiche urbane, sepolte e in elevato.
La rivista "Archeologia Postmedievale" e' una sede nella quale viene sviluppato il dibattito su diverse tematiche, come l'archeologia rurale,l'ecologia storica e la bioarcheologia. Al fianco dei temi più radicati nella tradizione dell'archeologia postclassica, come la storia del commercio e delle produzioni, l'archeologia postmedievale ha più recentemente avviato un'attenzione per quegli archivi biologici rappresentati dai cimiteri postmedievali di catastrofe, per la loro capacita' di fornire un fermo immagine di contesto delle società postmedievali, ma anche per il campo di ricerca della Conflict Archaeology, per la sua potenzialita' di ridisegnare paesaggi dei conflitti rilevati e non solo immaginati e per i suoi importanti collegamenti, anche di carattere umanitario, con la Forensic Archaeology.

Post-Medieval phases of Medieval parish churches are little studied due to a lack of extant physical evidence caused by widespread Victorian restoration. This research uses Stonegrave Minster as a case study in the reconstruction of lost Post-Medieval phases, demonstrating that such phases should be studied as part of the story of alteration and adaptation of parish churches. Using a multi-disciplinary buildings archaeology approach including archival research, stratigraphic and physical analysis, measured building survey, phased plans and sightline analysis, this research explores what the physical and documentary evidence can reveal about the form, fabric, use and experience of the Post-Medieval church.

The reviewed publication, published in 2019, is a collection of texts based on papers and posters presented at the international conference under the same title held in Prague in April 2018. The contributors focus on the most common items found at archaeological sites of the period, i.e., ceramics, particularly vessels and tiles. The work under discussion demonstrates how heterogeneous these finds are, how many unanswered questions they provoke, especially regarding their production, exploitation, and trade, and at the same time what progress has been made in these fields of research, but also what remains unclear and in need of further studies.
