Recent Prehistory

Abstract

This paper focuses on the recent research carried out at the Argaric site of Cerro de San Cristóbal, a small
settlement situated in the Vega de Granada. From an habitational point of view, this site stands out as a
culturally hybrid context in which different pottery vessels typologically characteristic of the Chalcolithic and
Argaric periods coexisted. Associated with living areas, 14 burials were located with at least 17 inhumations
and grave goods in which materials traditionally considered as indicators of high social status were absent.
The technological properties of the metallic grave offerings were specifically studied. The combination of
metallographic, microhardness and compositional analyses questions the adoption of tin-bronze alloy due to
its functional improvements.


Resumen

Se presentan los resultados de las investigaciones realizadas en el yacimiento argárico del cerro de San
Cristóbal, un asentamiento de pequeñas dimensiones situado en plena vega de Granada. Entre las evidencias
de hábitat destaca, especialmente, un contexto híbrido donde conviven elementos materiales tanto de época
calcolítica como argárica. Asociado al poblado se documentaron 14 sepulturas de inhumación con un número
mínimo de 17 individuos y ajuares funerarios donde están ausentes los materiales tradicionalmente
considerados como indicadores de alto estatus social. Los ajuares metálicos han sido objeto de un estudio
específico sobre su tecnología de manufactura. La combinación de análisis de composición, metalografías y
microdureza cuestiona que la adopción de la aleación de cobre y estaño suponga una mejora en las
propiedades físicas o mecánicas de los objetos.

"The use of amber is documented in the Iberian peninsula since the Palaeolithic. The procurement and trade of this fossil resin has often been considered in discussions of long-distance trade and the emergence
of social complexity, but so far no comprehensive view of the Iberian evidence has been produced to allow a more overarching interpretive model.

This paper presents the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterization of archaeological amber from three Iberian prehistoric sites: a necklace recovered from the megalithic site of Palacio III (Almadeń de la Plata, Sevilla), a pommel from PP4 Montelirio (Valencina de la Concepción, Sevilla), and a necklace from the Muricecs de Cellers cave (Llimiana, Pallars Jussà, Lleida). Based on these new data and a review of the literature, we present an overview that outlines fluctuations in the use of amber since the Upper Palaeolithic and demonstrates long-distance amber exchange connecting Iberia with northern Europe and the Mediterranean region since the Chalcolithic period at least. We discuss changes in the origins and cultural use of amber and their implications for the consolidation of trade networks."

The “Bastida Project” has been led by an interdisciplinary team of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since 2008. La Bastida, the archaeological site after which it is named, has a long research history that has made it one of the benchmarks for knowledge on Europe’s Bronze Age. The excavations carried out at various sectors of the site, as well as the specialized investigations of the last ten years have enabled the identification of three major occupation phases. The results confirm the importance of the settlement in its historical context.

Big narratives on the role of metallurgy in social change and technological innovations are common in archaeology. However, informed discussion of these issues requires a contextualised characterisation of metallurgical technology at the local level in its specific social and technological contexts. This paper approaches early metallurgy in Iberia from a technological perspective. We focus on the site of Las Pilas in the Vera Basin (Mojácar, Almería, Spain), where the whole metallurgical chaîne opératoire has been documented in situ through archaeological excavation of a third millennium BC context. The study includes microstructural, mineralogical and chemical analyses of ores, slag, technical ceramics and finished artefacts, as well as domestic pottery used for comparative purposes. These results are discussed with reference to the archaeological context and evidence for other domestic activities and crafts. Our aim is to contribute to better charac-terise the early metallurgical tradition of Southeast Iberia, paying particular attention to specific technological tools, knowledge and recipes that may allow future comparative approaches to knowledge transmission or independent innovation debates. For this particular case, we demonstrate the direct production of arsenical copper in a low-scale, low-spe-cialisation, low-efficiency set up that involved the crucible smelting of complex oxidic ores in a context that suggests associations with cereal roasting and, indirectly, with basket and pottery making.

Resumen: La zona de Tierras de Antequera se sitúa entre los dos principales focos de investigación de la Prehistoria Reciente de la Península Ibérica: el so y el se. Este carácter limítrofe o periférico, unido a una tradicional escasez de evidencias metalúrgicas en la zona, contribuyó a generalizar la idea de que el metal ma-lagueño era sistemáticamente importado de otras regiones. No obstante, a principios de los años 90 el Proyecto de Investigación Arqueometalúrgica de la Provincia de Málaga demostró la existencia de recursos minerales de cobre potencialmente explotables en la provincia, y de los principales elementos de la cadena de producción metalúrgica en varios yacimientos del iii y ii milenios ac. Asimismo, intervenciones arqueológicas recientes han vuelto a poner de actualidad la cuestión al documentar hallazgos de producción metalúrgica prehistórica en el corazón de las Tierras de Antequera, forzándonos a replantearnos nuestras teorías sobre el modelo de apropiación de recursos cupríferos de estas comunidades. En este trabajo revisamos las evidencias arqueometalúrgicas prehistóricas, presentamos nuevos datos de composición e isótopos de plomo, y a la luz de los últimos hallazgos realizamos una aproximación al papel socioeconómico que esta desempeñó, en su contexto andaluz y especialmente en relación a los principales focos metalúrgicos. This work deals with the structural evidence and the material culture recovered during the archaeological excavation of the prehistoric settlement of Monte dos Remedios (Moaña, Pontevedra) by using Geographic Information Systems (GRASS-GIS, Quantum GIS, etc...) and open-source statistical analysis programs (R). Thus, we will focus on describing the characteristics of this settlement and analysing the relationships between the archaeological material culture (pottery, lithics...) and the main structures identified (post-holes, hearths, pavements...) with a view to provide new data on the nature and functionality of such structural evidences.

La cueva de La Pileta es un yacimiento muy conocido por la riqueza de las manifestaciones artísticas parietales prehistóricas que atesora. Sin embargo, el conocimiento de la secuencia cronocultural documentada en las excavaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en 1912 y 1942 es muy pobre. En este trabajo hacemos un repaso del registro arqueológico de La Pileta a partir de la revisión historiográfi ca y del estudio de los materiales depositados en el Museo de Málaga y de algunos documentos del archivo de esta institución. Los resultados, aunque limitados, permiten deducir la existencia de una secuencia más amplia de la conocida por lo general, compuesta por niveles del Paleolítico medio, Paleolítico superior, Neolítico, Calcolítico, Edad del Bronce y Edad Media. The cave of La Pileta is a very know site for the richness of their prehistoric rock art representations. However, the knowledge of the chrono-cultural sequence documented in the archaeological fi elds by 1912 and 1942 is very poor. In this work we make a historiographical revision and study of La Pileta archaeological record deposit in Museum of Málaga and the several documents of the archive of this institution. The results, even though with very limits, we permit us to deduce the existence of an archaeological sequence more extent that the known just now with Middle Palaeolithic, Upper Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Copper Age and Bronze Age and medieval levels.

More than 700 silver objects are known from the
Middle Bronze Age El Argar culture, which contrasts
significantly with the rest of Bronze Age Europe, where
silver is mostly rare. This has traditionally been explained
by the difficulties of extracting silver from complex ores
by cupellation and the relative abundance of easily accessible
occurrences of native silver and silver chlorides in
the south of the Iberian peninsula. However, until now in
the Iberian Bronze Age the use of native silver has only
been inferred by the absence of evidence of cupellation.
The results of trace element analysis of a series of silver
objects from several Argaric settlements reveal for the
first time positive evidence for the use of native silver.
Lead isotope analyses show that hardly any of the objects
were made of silver from known and characterised mining
districts.

The aim of this work is to present the lithic ensembles surveyed on three sites from the province of León (Spain) that are provisionally assigned to the Calcolithic. A general overview of the main tecno-typological features will be presented and also a macroscopic study of the lithic raw material. An approach to the lithic raw material procurement will be also outlined. Lastly, the topic of the problematical study of surface materials will be undertaken.

Antecedentes, entorno y descripción del yacimiento:
El enclave arqueológico de El Cementerio fue descubierto, fortuitamente, a principios de noviembre de 1990, a resultas de unos trabajos que tenían como finalidad la ampliación del espacio funerario en el cementerio de Quintanilla de Onésimo. La noticia de su existencia se debe al entonces Alcalde de la villa: D. Antonio Castrillo, quien, al percatarse de que las labores citadas dejaban sobre la superficie del terreno diversas evidencias arqueológicas, tuvo a bien comunicar tal circunstancia en el Servicio Territorial de Cultura de Valladolid.

Inmediatamente se personó en el lugar Jesús M.ª del Val Recio, quien entonces era el Técnico Arqueólogo de la Junta de Castilla y León en la delegación de Valladolid. Durante aquella visita, a la que asistí personalmente, se pudo tomar conciencia del alcance del deterioro que había sufrido la estación arqueológica. Ante la expectativa de que nuevas obras causar un daño aún mayor, como medida preventiva, se consideró necesaria la realización de una excavación de urgencia en el lugar. Dicha intervención, desarrollada en el marco de actuación del Convenio que, para la realización de excavaciones arqueológicas en la provincia de Valladolid, firmaron en 1991 la Junta de Castilla y León y la Diputación Provincial con la Universidad de Valladolid, se llevó a cabo entre el 2 de septiembre y el 3 de octubre de ese mismo año bajo. De tales trabajos, que fueron codirigidos por quien esto subscribe , se publicó un avance (Rodríguez Marcos, J. A., y Abarquero Moras, F. J. 1994: 33-57).

La localidad de Quintanilla de Onésimo se sitúa en pleno valle del Duero, a la altura del km 34 de la carretera N-122. El cementerio de Quintanilla se ubica en un pago, conocido como El Prado. Para acceder a este ámbito cabe tomar la carretera local de Villafuerte-Cuellar. A poco de abandonar Quintanilla en dirección a Cuellar, una vez traspasada la antigua línea férrea Valladolid-Ariza, en el margen derecho de esta carretera, se abre un camino de tierra denominado del Prado. Recorridos unos metros por dicha senda observaremos que ésta se bifurca a derecha, dando origen al denominado camino de la Dehesa. Precisamente en el ángulo que forma la intersección de ambos caminos se encuentra el yacimiento.

Repetidas visitas al lugar permitieron comprobar que se trataba de un pequeño poblado que ocupó un área de apenas 700 m²; superficie que, sólo en parte, quedaba englobada en el interior del recinto funerario de Quintanilla de Onésimo.

El ámbito geográfico en que se enmarca el yacimiento, situado en la unidad ambiental denominada Ribera del Duero, responde morfológicamente a un relieve, en el que predominan las líneas horizontales. En este punto de la provincia de Valladolid, el Duero ha excavado un amplio valle en artesa que discurre entre los altos páramos calcáreos (Páramo del Cerrato, al norte y Páramo de Campaspero, al Sur). Dentro de este contexto, el yacimiento se asienta sobre una de las terrazas bajas del Duero, ocupando un espacio eminentemente llano a medio camino entre la margen derecha de este río, distante aproximadamente 750 m, y el tramo inferior de la zona de cuestas que limitan los páramos.

Los caracteres edafológicos de la zona que nos ocupa, a grandes rasgos, vienen definidos por la existencia de un amplio manto de arenas que han dado lugar a unos suelos de tipo fluvisol cálcico. Estas arenas cuaternarias, de origen fluvial y acumulación eólica, recubren y homogeneizan el paisaje de valles y campiñas de amplios sectores del centro y sur de la provincia de Valladolid.

Algunas líneas arriba señalábamos que El Cementerio se encuentra a cierta distancia del Duero, no obstante podemos indicar que el abastecimiento de agua no debió ser una preocupación para las gentes que ocuparon el poblado, por cuanto en sus proximidades discurre el arroyo del Prado. A pesar de lo irregular del caudal de los arroyos que, como el presente, nacen de fuentes situadas en lo alto de los páramos próximos, el lugar tiene un alto grado de humedad que hemos de poner en relación con los caracteres litológicos propios de las zonas de arenas de este ámbito provincial. Estos materiales, dada su permeabilidad, filtran fácilmente el agua y en aquellas zonas donde, como en el presente caso, el sustrato miocénico permeable se sitúa a escasa profundidad, tiene lugar la aparición de humedales que propician el mantenimiento de pastizales. Precisamente uno de los topónimos del área sobre el que se asienta el yacimiento (El Prado) hace alusión a las buenas condiciones que ofrece desde el punto de vista hídrico, las cuales facilitan el desarrollo de una pradera natural en el entorno próximo a la estación arqueológica.

Si desde un punto de vista funcional el recurso hídrico no debió ser causa de preocupación para los ocupantes del poblado, tampoco debió serlo la búsqueda de una posición estratégica a la hora de seleccionar el emplazamiento. Prueba de cuanto decimos la tenemos, por ejemplo, en que el lugar se sitúa al pie de un pequeño cerro  (conocido por las gentes de la zona como San Cristobal) desde donde resulta fácilmente vulnerable o en lo exiguo del campo visual que se domina desde el yacimiento; muy limitado hacia el sur por la barrera que forma la línea de páramos y hacia el N/W por el propio cerro.

The recent discovery of an exceptionally rich grave at La Almoloya in south-eastern Spain illuminates the political context of Early Bronze Age El Argar society. The quantity, variety and opulence of the grave goods emphasise the technological, economic and social dimensions of this unique culture. The assemblage includes politically and ideologically emblematic objects, among which a silver diadem stands out. Of equally exceptional character is the building under which the grave was found—possibly one of the first Bronze Age palaces identified in Western Europe. The architecture and artefacts from La Almoloya provide new insight into emblematic individuals and the exercise of power in societies of marked economic asymmetry.

"La prospección sistemática de arte rupestre en el Ayuntamiento de Porto do Son (A Coruña) ha permitido la localización de casi dos centenares de grabados, dos de ellos en abrigos graníticos. A estos últimos se suman otros dos casos en las comarcas occidentales de Galicia. La temática presente es idéntica a la del arte galaico al aire libre, datado grosso modo en el III milenio a.C. Estos hallazgos plantean, por otra parte, la intencionada restricción física sobre la visualización de este fenómeno. La convivencia de motivos en el interior de cavidades con otros situados al aire libre e incluso en frisos verti- cales fácilmente perceptibles demuestra la variabilidad de estas manifestaciones y nos permite reflexionar sobre la audiencia a la que habrían estado destinadas las diferen- tes estaciones rupestres.

The systematic survey of rock art in the area of the town council of Porto do Son (A Coruña) has allowed us to find nearly two hundred carved surfaces, two of them located within rock shelters. Two other examples in the Western regions of Galicia must be added to those. The motifs inside the rock shelters are exactly the same as those found in the open-air petroglyphs, which can be roughly dated to the third millennium BC. These finds attest to the existence of an intentional constraint on the visibility of these graphic manifestations. The coexistence of motifs inside cavities and others located outdoors, even on fairly conspicuous vertical friezes, shows the variability of this phenomenon and allows us to reflect on the different audiences at which the rock sites would have been aimed."

Association of animal bones to funerary contexts of Recent Prehistory: the Outeiro Alto 2 case study

In this paper the authors present the study of the faunal assemblage associated to the funerary Bronze Age contexts of Nucleus B of Outeiro Alto 2 (Serpa), both hipogea and pits. The taxa are Sus sp. and Bos sp. revealing an anatomical representation mainly composed by bones of the fore limbs.
The faunal association in hipogea 62 and 65 is similar to the rituals observed in hipogea from Torre Velha 3, Belmeque and Montinhos 6, also from Bronze Age, and at the same region: isolated radius diaphysis from an animal compatible to bovid. The ritual observed in pit 53 is particular and still exclusive of this site, where a set of disarticulated bones are deposed directly on the human body.

The Pena d’Água Rock-shelter (Torres Novas, Portugal) was excavated in 1992–2000, revealing a long stratigraphic and cultural sequence including Middle Neolithic occupations. A preliminary study on its fauna was published by Valente (1998) based on the 1992–1994 material, but the 1997–2000 campaigns remained unstudied. The aim of this study is to present the full fauna analysis of the layer Db, dated from the earlier phases of that period.
Like other assemblages from the same time frame in the area, the fauna collection understudy is small. Its bones showed several surface and chemical alterations due to sediment pressure, exposure to fire and water percolation. Regarding the taxonomical abundances, most remains were classified as rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and sheep and/or goat (Ovis aries/Capra hircus). A few specimens of cervid, fox (Vulpes vulpes) and bird were also identified.
The other fauna assemblages from the region show either the prevalence of the caprine component (as in Pena d’Água) or a higher abundance of cervids. This trend may reflect a specialized animal exploitation and we propose that the Middle Neolithic human communities in the Limestone Massif had a subsistence strategy based on caprine exploration, supplemented by some cervid (red deer) hunting. These hunter-herders groups were probably highly mobile and may have practiced some kind of transhumance (or itinerant pastoralism), for which the details are still unknown.

Apresenta-se um conjunto de materiais pré-romanos (maioritariamente cerâmicos) recolhidos durante os mais recentes trabalhos arqueológicos realizados no espaço outrora ocupado pelo forum de Aeminium, actual Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro. Apesar de integralmente provenientes de contextos secundários, constituem testemunho raro das primeiras ocupações humanas atestadas em Coimbra. Deste modo, com o seu estudo, pretende-se complementar o actual estádio de conhecimento e lançar novas pistas acerca das ocupações pré-romanas da cidade e da região.
This paper concerns an assemblage of Pre-Roman materials (mostly pottery) recovered during the latest archaeological excavations at the former Roman forum of Aeminium (presently the Machado de Castro National Museum, MNMC, in Coimbra). Despite proceeding from secondary deposits, these finds provide a rare testimony of the earlier human occupations known in Coimbra. Its study aims to develop the actual state of knowledge about Pre-Roman occupations in the city and surrounding region while raising new perspectives on the subject.
