AbstRAct In 1915, during the construction of Hospital da Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Santo Tirso), in a pinewood at Quinta do Gião, six ceramic containers and one bronze bracelet were recovered. Although their micro context of deposition are not clear, the quantity of containers and their typologies allow to hypothesize the existence, in that same area, of a Bronze Age necropolis. In order to chronologically accurate this context, soot residues from the interior of one ceramic container was dated by AMS. The result, although it cannot be extrapolated to all the recovered materials, confirms the funerary use of this place during the Middle Bronze Age.

AbstRAct Late Bronze Age data is unknown. During Early Bronze the presence of metallic objects and some opulent tombs connected to valley areas seems to " physically sign " landscape. In mountain areas cairns indicate the social importance of death and the necessity of preserving ancestral memory. During Middle Bronze Age data reveals distinct lifestyles and conceptions of death. For communities linked to mountain areas death prevails as a significant form of landscape " imprinting ". In valleys prevails an invisible death, perhaps connected to the increasing lost of corpses importance as collective and spatial references. There are also some immemorial ancestral places (re)visited between Early and Late Bronze Age that denounce collective meaningfulness.

In Tourism, artificial intelligence already has numerous applications, facilitating processes, adding value to experiences, and improving competitiveness. However, its use raises several questions for companies and tourist destinations. As this research subject in tourism is still limited, the present study, based on nine semi-structured interviews, aims to identify and analyze the perceptions of tourist agents (companies and destinations) about the advantages and/or disadvantages, challenges, implications of use, and also of non-use, of artificial intelligence in the current situation of COVID-19 and in the future. The results underline the unanimous perception of the importance of using technology that does not replace the human component but adds value to it. The implications and suggestions for future work will also be presented.

This poster will present, in particular, results from XRF analyses, which reveal differences in phosphorus (P) content on and off site. We will also detail the ecological preferences of plants relative to the nutrient content on and off site. The presence of certain plants exclusively inside structures demonstrates the influence of the past human activities (700 years ago) on these microsocio-ecological systems. However, this “legacy effect” is not apparent on the Bronze Age (4200 years old) enclosure, which raise the question of the time required for the resilience. Another interesting result is the presence of lead inside the medieval cabin and the modern enclosure. These results reveal the soil memory effect link with ancient mining activity. Lake sediment and peat cores taken around the study area revealed lead pollutions during both, the Roman and the Medieval periods. The presence of mines used between the 10th and 13th centuries (Py et al., 2014), at least attests the local o...

The cave of Lorga de Dine (Council of Vinhais) occupies a little limestone mass...

deposition of metal artefacts during the Bronze Age is a wider phenomenon attested all over the Europe. Occupying a western end position rich in mining minerals, the Northwestern Iberian Peninsula also witnesses these kind of past societies manifestations during the mentioned period. The present work aims to explore the archaeological remains of those practices in a narrowed part of the Iberia, specifically, in the Atlantic fringe of the Northwestern Portugal (between the basins of rivers Ave and Minho) during the Late Bronze Age. For that, it will be taken into account some of the regional available data, including in progress research, in order to verify some contingencies of such a complex past agency. Such a task will not only prioritize the different types of metal objects, their hypothetical biographical character and chronologies, but, specifically, and whenever possible, their micro and medium contexts of deposition, including recent contributions from fieldwork research. In a regional scale it is interesting to attest that some deposition preferences prevail.

This work aims to study the context of engraved weapons dating back to the Late Chalcolithic/ Early Bronze Age, located in the South-west of Galicia and North-west of Portugal. It is assumed that prehistoric and premodern societies experience the surrounding physical world and its forms as full of meanings, and not as simple sets of random entities. The physical elements forming the landscape, such as rivers, mountains or rocks, were seen and felt as meaningful. Thus, the rock art within that meaningful world materialises some ideas and meanings from the communities, which engraved these motifs or, in some cases, even added new ones. In this sense, engraved panels with similar iconography may occur in similar contexts. Weapon engravings in outcrops were presented in an active or passive position. There are some differences in the contextual location of each group that lead to some interpretations regarding their meaning within an animistic perspective of experiencing the world. The first group, which is most unusual, occurred in high altitude places, that is, in the platforms of higher slopes of certain impressive and rocky hills, close to wetlands. Taking into consideration its physical context and the orientation of the weapons in the rock, these places seem to materialise a cosmogony connected to the solar cycle, the stars and the symbolic importance of some hills, that seem to have served as structuring places of the Bronze Age landscape. The group of places with passive weapon engravings is more heterogeneous in physical contexts but are always within an intimate scenario. They seem to relate to intersection areas and several natural paths connecting the lower lands with the middle or higher lands. The orientation of the weapons in the rock is also heterogeneous, but seems to indicate the importance of votive offering to deities of the outcrops, the water sources and the earth.

Rock art as a practice of past communities can be divided into Palaeolithic and post-Palaeolithic arts. Considering the later, which in turn can be divided into Atlantic and Schematic Arts, among other styles difficult to define (Bettencourt, 2017a, 2017b), this work will focus Atlantic rock art. Our selected object of study is the recorded segmented circles that, according to that author, will belong to a stylistic universe emerging in the Bronze Age. The geographic area is the Lima River basin. Although these motifs are rare, they appear both on the coast and inland, in association with different figurative grammars. By the macroscopic observation of its orientation they indicate a relation with celestial cults or celebrations during certain moments of the year

Being at the western fringe of Europe, Iberia had a peculiar prehistory and a complex pattern of Neolithization. A few studies, all based on modern populations, reported the presence of DNA of likely African origin in this region, generally concluding it was the result of recent gene flow, probably during the Islamic period. Here, we provide evidence of much older gene flow from Africa to Iberia by sequencing whole genomes from four human remains from northern Portugal and southern Spain dated around 4000 years BP (from the Middle Neolithic to the Bronze Age). We found one of them to carry an unequivocal sub-Saharan mitogenome of most probably West or West-Central African origin, to our knowledge never reported before in prehistoric remains outside Africa. Our analyses of ancient nuclear genomes show small but significant levels of sub-Saharan African affinity in several ancient Iberian samples, which indicates that what we detected was not an occasional individual phenomenon, but a...

“…we must therefore avoid saying that our body is in space, or in time. It inhabits space and time”.

The Coastal Geopark of Viana do Castelo occupies 320 km2 of the Portuguese NW. It includes coastal and mountainous areas and distinct sociocultural and territorial contexts, and a unique and diverse set of archaeological sites. The present work intends to show how some of these sites have leisure and educational potential on their own, or when articulated with other geological resources. Some actions are highlighted and proposed for the valorisation of the archaeological heritage located inside the limits of the Geopark, evidencing what has already been done to know and protect this important (but fragile) set of past traces

Abstract: New interpretations to a selected set of “hoards” of palstave axes with two rings from the North-western Iberia are proposed. This task was based not only on morphological study of these objects but also on their spatial contexts of deposition. The morphological (dimensions and weight) variations observed among the objects of a same deposit allow us to consider its formation by unique and individual objects. This reveals the use of different casting molds and alloys and, hypothetically, distinct production origins. At the same time, the distribution of different sets appears to have relations with natural circulation corridors (rivers basins and ridges areas). These were routes known and used since long ago, which certainly promoted more than occasional encounters between distinct human groups.

This work reports the data which has been recovered from the excavation of Sector II of Pego. Among other kinds of evidence, that area encompasses traces of funerary practices dating back to the Bronze Age.Based upon the local’s choice, the structures’ architectonic features, their interrelations, materials associated and strati-graphy and in the carbon dating results available we have proposed different uses and occupation phases.Although certain materials reflect human presence during later periods, the frequency of that area denounce three occu-pation moments datable from between the Middle Bronze Age and the Late Bronze Age. These moments are consistent with the construction of a plain grave’s necropolis, probably forming familiar clusters, a hypothetic pits’ necropolis and, prior to the abandonment of the area, an “enclosure”.Given the interpretations presented we have discussed the possible relation between the local, certain physical charac-teristics and the presence of funer...

The goal of this paper is to present a synthesis about the Middle Bronze Age and the origins of the Late Bronze Age in the NW Iberia. This work was done taking into account burial contexts and practices and the new scenarios (compared to the Early Bronze Age) that structured the world and created social identity: the settlements and some " natural spaces " , together with the re-interpretation of the past loci. The " natural space " was sometimes materialized by the ceremonial deposition of metallic artefacts and the construction of statues-menhirs. The new conception of the world is understandable in a society depending from husbandry, forestry and shepherding activities, tributary to the land and more sedentary and bearer of an animist cosmology increasingly connected to the propriety of minerals, metallic artefacts and others elements. The archaeological site of Vale Ferreiro is located in Godarilhas, in the parish of Serafão, in the municipality of Fafe and in the district of Braga.
The discovery of this site at the end of 1999 was due to the opening of a road that cut through the flat top of a hill. These works uncovered an open pit in the rocky substrate and the Vale Ferreiro Tomb 1, which were excavated in 1999 (Bettencourt et al. 2005).
The human remains correspond to a male individual, about 15 years old, with no bone or dental pathologies, morphologically or radiologically worth mentioning, as well as any trace of trauma, which indicates a very reasonable health status at the time of his death.
He was buried vertically, probably squatting, in a stone chamber of great constructive investment, in the context of other burials. The corpse, covered with a red dye, was dated by 14C between 2141 and 1884 cal. BC (95.4%), i.e. from the Early Bronze Age (Ua-19728).

Arqueologia | Arquitetura | Artes Visuais | Design | Geografia | Geologia | História.

Bettencourt e do Professor Doutor José Meireles Baptista.
(1) Arte rupestre;
(2) Contextos e práticas funerárias;
(3) Estratégias de povoamento, povoados e sua organização interna;

The EJI-PATER – 1st Young Researchers’ Meeting in Landscape, Heritage and Territory Studies aims to become an scientific annual event based on three basilar lines (Landscape, Heritage and Territory) in the optics of different scientific areas in interaction, such as Archaeology, Architecture, Geology, History, among many others. It also pretends to encourage holistic approaches that contribute to increase multi and interdisciplinarity.
Even though starting from the North of Portugal, studies from other areas of Portuguese and Iberian territory will be welcome.
EJI-PATER was idealized to serve all young researchers: graduated, master’s and PhD’s students, masters or PhD that achieved their grade at least at 10 years, so as other non academic affiliated elements (or teams) (belonging to City Halls, Companies, etc.) which pretend to participate.
The meeting aims to promote all works in the following areas:
(a) studies on landscapes resulting from historical processes; it fit on this item approaches to settlement, exploitation of “resources”, power scenarios and relations, social practices, among others;
(b) studies on cultural and natural heritage (landscapes, geology, etc.) in articulation, including recent concerns and guidelines about Tourism and sustainable development, so on the role of new technologies as allies answering to all new challenges resulting from actual conditions of cultural fruition;
(c) studies on territory and environment in relation to space dynamics, namely all forms of environmental occupation, organization, construction and interaction.
(d) Studies on art (including prehistoric rock art and portable art) as cognitive conceiving and bearers of “messages”;
(e) studies on materialities (ceramic, lithic, metal, glass, etc.), bone remains (human and animal) and paleoenvironmental approaches (such as anthracology, carpology, etc.);
(f) all approaches that the Scientific Commission consider to fit on the Meeting baseline themes (Landscape, Heritage and Territory).
All proposals will be subjected to scientific expertise. The event format will contemplate three days of oral and posters presentations, posteriorly publishing the accepted works.
During the Meeting will occur a competition subordinate to the theme “Present Past”. All type of artistic works will be accepted, such as photos, free drawings, illustrations, etc. The works must include an honour signed declaration attesting its authorship. The works will be exhibited during the event and the winner will became the meeting minutes cover.
