Moreover, its pathology, both dental and skeletal, is also different, depending on the conditions of the natural, socioeconomic and cultural environment in which those people had lived. This paper refers to the dental pathology in the Bronze Age Romania, which is obviously variable, depending upon the populations that we refer to and the food regime that they had. The most important aspect that we want to emphasize is that an obvious difference could have been observed between the dental pathology of the bearers of the tumular ochre burials (Yamnaya, Mnogovalikovaya and Katakombnaya cultures) compared to the other ethnic groups, exiting during that time.

In our case, the orientation of the skeletons in the necropoleis of the Gumelniţa culture is being investigated. The dead can be placed in the pit with a certain orientation towards the cardinal points, towards some celestial bodies, towards another pit, or without any orientation. The Neo-Eneolithic man had a special funerary behavior. The dead was usually arranged in the pit depending to the Sun position in the sky (most frequently, according to the specialized literature). To our knowledge, the Sun describes a solar arc, the solstices being its extremities. If the orientation of the skeletons in a necropolis show a Gaussian distribution towards a specific cardinal point, then, we could say that the respective community used to orientate its dead towards that specific cardinal point. If these cardinal points are E and W, than we could check if the orientation of the skeletons falls within the solar arc, which would show if the r...

This is how, the permanent interrelations existing between the individual and his surroundings became concrete, the same like the consequences of his acts upon the environment. Teeth are a kind of mirror of the human activities as, in some cases, they were also used as "tools". Besides, some aspects of pathology show different changes, induced either by an unhealthy, or unbalanced food, a weakness of the immune system, or other causes, directly connected to the entire system. On the territory of Romania, we can find two distinct situations, regarding the aspects of dental pathology. On one hand, there are Eneolithic and Bronze Age cemeteries where the caries and other defects appear rather frequently and, others, where such problem can be seldom found. The first category are arhaeologically proven to have been mostly sedentary, agriculturalist populations, while the second ones were semi-nomadic, predominantly pastoral communities. Unfortunately, we didn't have the benefit of modern analyses for a more complete and detailed study. Funerary rituals The funerary rituals were distinct ones. For the Gumelniţa, Monteoru, Zimnicea-Plovdiv and Noua cultures, the burials were flat, grouped into necropolises. More seldom in the case of the last three cultures small tumuli there were also raised above the burials. The dead were placed into the pit in a flexed position, on the right or on the left side of their body. The inventory was usually present, consisting in pottery, implements, etc. For the bearers of the so-called tumular ochre burials (belonging to the Jamnaja, Catacombnaja and Srubnja Cultures), the ritual comprised the presence of the larger or smaller tumuli, the supine, or flexed skeletons, sometimes the use of ochre, which covered the entire, or part of the dead, the small number, or lack of inventory items. General features For the first case, we will mostly use the communities of the Monteoru Culture (Bronze Age), while for the second category we will present some data concerning the communities of the Jamnaja and Catacombnaja (Eneolithic and Bronze Age). Moreover, we will refer to the Noua Culture (Bronze Age) that also represented by steppic pastoral communities but, it had also some influences from the local communities. Data about dental pathology Predominantly agricultural communities One of the first features that is specific to the agriculturalist communities is the higher dental wear, due to the high quantity of fibers they used for feeding. For the Eneolithic period we don't have too much published information regarding the dental pathology. From the Gumelniţa communities, some interesting data were provided by the series from Dridu (Teleorman County). We should mention here that, as usual fact for the mentioned period, of Eneolithic, the skeletons we discuss here had a low degree of wear. Also, we consider worth being pointed out the oblique implantation of the frontal teeth in some (burial no. 4 and 5) of the 8 individuals (4 men and 4 women).
