In this article, we examine the recent discovery of footage of Mercé and contextualize these preserved fragments within the development of Western cinema and the presence of the Spanish imaginary in the film industry of the time. These visual sources reveal how Mercé negotiated between art and technology, stage and screen, economy and aesthetics in establishing her cultural position and resisting particular constructions of Spanishness.

This study analyses the Spanish reception of Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) (1913), one of its most avant-garde pieces. Although the original work was never performed in Spain as a complete ballet, its influence was felt deeply in the work of certain Spanish choreographers, composers, painters and intellectuals during the so-called Silver Age, the period of modernisation and cultural expansion which extended from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

Marius Petipa’s version with Léon Minkus’ score, premiered in 1869, is its most famous choreography. Identified with the Spanish stereotype, it has been versioned in many ways, choosing some of its most wellknown episodes. However, the Spanish republican exile of 1939 circumstances has marked and shaped the ballet version presented between the forties and sixties. Her relationship with the Spanish Republican exile in Mexico and the contacts with Mexican artists and intellectuals were an essential factor for the foundation of the first Modern Dance company, La Paloma Azul, in 1940. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the impact of Sokolow’s work as a teacher and choreographer in the Mexican cultural panorama in 1940, as well as to underline the role of Mexican, Spanish and United States artists, musicians, writers and dancers for the configuration of its modern repertoire. Various kinds of sources, both graphic and written, were used, which are conserved in different archives, libraries and museums in Mexico, Spain and the United States.

These stereotypes—which were legacy of romanticism, defined on the other side of the Pyrenees—went from being accepted as a cultural construct imposed from the outside to being projected as selfrepresentation within Spain, and were even linked to the recovery and elevation of popular culture as part of the construction of modernity and the avant-garde. In this composite imaginary, the accepted nineteenth-century mix of “Carmens,” toreadors, and bandits by which “Spanishness” had come to be equated with qualities such as passion, violence, sensuality, heroism, and pride found its fullest expression in the type of films that became known as “españoladas.” The incorporation of live action and theatrical aspects boosted the dissemination of these cultural constructs even further, introducing the truth and emotional value of the body through live performance and embracing shared memory by means of folklore. At the same time, the presence of fiction was a constant reminder that the films were mise-en-scènes, redefined products loaded with meaning about what Spain was.”

It explores the results in the work carried on by the exiled artists in the different places of refuge, from Europe to America: Toulouse, Paris, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, New York, Buenos Aires, Mexico, the Caribbean and the rest of the Southern Cone. Artists such as Antoni Clavé, Alberto Sánchez, Maruja Mallo, Manuel Fontanals, Victorina Durán and Joan Junyer are just some of the protagonists of this fundamental episode in the Republican exile scene. These painters designed sets and costumes for Margarita Xirgu, George Balanchine, Cipriano Rivas Cherif, Roland Petit and Alicia Alonso, among others. This book aims to visualize the interdisciplinary networks where Spanish artists had the opportunity to work with other painters, writers, choreographers, architects, musicians, dancers and actors, as well as to nudge the diffusion of many of the modern and avant-garde contributions born in the context of the Spanish Silver Age at the beginning of the 20th century.
