The Dictionary Driven Facility - the effect of generalized software on programmer productivity

Abstract

DDF - The Dictionary Driven Facility - is an on-line data processing environment consisting of an active dictionary and two interpretive transaction processors. It is supported by a non-procedural language which assists the application programmers in defining transactions, a program to construct data base record descriptions, a protocol for defining data records, and four utility programs which allow the manipulation and reporting of the data in the dictionary.
To understand DDF, it is first necessary to understand the functions which appear to be universally required in on-line programs.
A typical personnel/payroll application will be used to illustrate these universal functions and to contrast DDF with a traditional on-line program. Our hypothetical problem is to provide the personnel office with an on-line transaction that will allow them to add a new employee to their computer records.
