This empirical study aims to design and test a research model that investigates the effect of job insecurity as a moderator of the relationships between perceived employability and employee well-being (work engagement). It also measures the impact of perceived employability on work engagement. Data were gathered from full-time frontline workers employed in five-star hotels in Northern Cyprus to test the study variables; the partial least square structural equation model (PLS-SEM) was applied and supported the research hypotheses. In line with the study predictions and findings from previous literature, perceived employability was found to have a significant positive impact on work engagement. The result revealed that, as a hindrance stressor, job insecurity negatively affects the relationship between perceived employability and work engagement. The findings of this study provide some insights concerning employability’s importance as well as influencing factors on employees’ job sele...

Tourism is a fast growing industry in the world and will continue to be a major source of foreign exchange for the countries. North Cyprus has its own state, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is not internationally recognized other than mainland, the Republic of Turkey. Improving tourism industry was also at the agenda of the economic targets that have been set by “Five Year Development Plans” (FYDP) in North Cyprus since 1978. But, these programs were not successful to bring an improvement and achieve sustainable development in the sector over the years. The study aims to put forward the developments in the tourism industry of North Cyprus since 1974. It seems that a solution to the Cyprus problem will be a sole remedy for Turkish Cypriots in achieving their economic welfare.

This study explored how social media is used as a destination marketing tool for the sustainability of heritage festival quality in Nigeria, drawing on the theory of planned behavior. The festival, which is an exploration of heritage, was specifically premeditated to celebrate the slave trade period by highlighting the unique connection of African American history to the diaspora ancestors who were literally taken away as slaves through “the point of no return” in Badagry, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was utilized as a research instrument to gather information aimed at examining the influence of social media (SM), website quality (WQ), and online word of mouth (eWOM) on tourists’ festival satisfaction (FS) and festival revisiting intention (FRI). Data were gathered from samples of 473 diaspora tourists at Badagry Diaspora Festival in Nigeria and analyzed using partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) with the aid of WarpPLS (7.0). The findings of the study...

This study investigated the effect of abusive supervision on employee organizational identification by analyzing the mediating effect of psychological contract violation. In addition, it explored the moderating role of favoritism in the direct association of abusive supervision and organizational identification and the indirect effect through psychological contract violation. A total of 488 seasonal, immigrant, and part-time employees from family-run hotel organizations were surveyed during the data collection process. By utilizing Hayes’s macro, we found that abusive supervision and psychological contract violation had a significant negative effect on organizational identification. In addition, the results showed that psychological contract violation mediated the effect of abusive supervision on organizational identification and favoritism moderated the effect of abusive supervision on psychological contract violation. The findings highlight the detrimental effects of favoritism an...

Purpose The conceptualization of service sabotage failed to adequately tap the domain of interest. Phenomena like turnover and service sabotage are difficult to measure and are not suitable for individual-level study. However, “intention” is suitable for individual-level or management-oriented studies. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach A new scale (eight items) to measure the intention to sabotage was developed and tested using a sample of bank (n=313) and insurance (n=258) employees in Nigeria. Cynicism and the desire for justice are the roots of sabotage. As such, the inability to stabilize institutionalized work processes and procedures may cause employees to be overcome with the intention to sabotage service, prior to the actual sabotage. Drawing on conservation of resources theory, this paper investigates the impact of employee cynicism on intention to sabotage as moderated by procedural justice. Findings The analyses suggest that employee cyni...

This empirical study aims to investigate the effects of management commitment, intrinsic motivation, and nepotism on job satisfaction, affective commitment, and quit intention of hotel frontline employees in a service setting in North Cyprus. PLS-SEM was used to analyse the hypothesised relationships. This paper presented an integrative model to test the aforementioned effects and relationships. With the exception of the relationships between nepotism and affective commitment, all hypothesised relationships were supported. This study has developed a new conceptual model compared to past research in service management literature, which aimed to examine the impact of untried variables on quit intention in a hotel setting such as a personality trait (intrinsic motivation) to determine the rate of FLEs who are willing to work without extrinsic motivation and how much FLE jobs are attractive to trigger pressure for nepotism as an organisational climate variable that may harm organisational harmony and motivation.

Although research on human resource management practices (HRMPs) has been ongoing for many years, studies have actually paid little attention to HRMPs and their contribution to the emotional side of the bottom line or commitment to the external environment, particularly the serial mediation of HRMPs. Hence, to fill this research void, this study extends social exchange theory, broaden-and-build theory and the conservation of resources (COR) theory in the context of green hospitality by proposing a novel conceptual model to test the mediating effects of resilience and commitment between HRMPs (training, empowerment, and rewards) and service providers’ environmental commitment. A quantitative study was performed involving 557 participants at green hotels. The findings show that the components of HRMPs (training, rewards, and empowerment) were found to be crucial tools in encouraging service providers to engage in environmental tasks while green training, empowerment and reward systems...

Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to examine the model of seasonal employee leadership (SEL) in a service management process and to create a multi-dimensional scale to gauge this construct. This is because very recent qualitative research by Arasli and Arici (2019), which is the first stage of this scale, recommended a multi-dimensional SEL model for the hospitality industry. Design/methodology/approach-Making use of data gathered from 1,343 seasonal hotel employees, the authors established a new scale to examine the SEL model. Two separate data sets were collected; the first set was used to perform an exploratory factor analysis, while the second set was processed to confirm the initial factor results using a confirmatory factor analysis. Findings-The results show that the measurement scale developed in this research provides considerable reliability, as well as convergent and discriminant validities. In particular, the findings confirmed a four-dimensional measurement scale of ...

The world has been affected by an outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Health care workers are among those most at risk of contracting the virus. In the fight against the coronavirus, nurses play a critical role. Still, most social media platforms demonstrate that nurses fear that their health is not being prioritized. The purpose of this study is to investigate nurses’ experiences through analyzing the main themes shared on Instagram by nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. In contrast with highly structured research, the current paper highlights nurses’ natural language use in describing their experiences during the first months of the outbreak in their workplace. Instagram captions were utilized as a data source. Leximancer was utilized for the content analysis of nurses’ narratives towards their coronavirus experience. We sought to accomplish three research objectives: the first was to identify the main themes in the descriptions of nurses’ experiences shared via their s...

This paper examines the main elements of online reviews left by popular cruise ships’ travelers. The eight most popular cruise ships were selected. We aimed to pinpoint the service quality experiential perceptions of cruise travelers regarding their higher or lower value for money ratings. Leximancer 4.5 software was used to derive the linkage and co-occurrence between service concepts in the online narratives of 2000 guests from Cruisecritic.com. The evaluation showed 10 areas addressed by the descriptions of the cruise’s perceived quality. These are “ship,” “staff,” “food,” “entertainment,” “room,” “area,” “embarkation,” “excursion” “disembarkation,” and “port.” Furthermore, the results highlight themes like “ship,” “staff,” “food,” “entertainment,” “room,” and “area” as belonging to the high-satisfaction group (excellent/very good), while “embarkation,” “disembarkation,” “excursion,” and “port” belong to the low-satisfaction group (poor/terrible). The study offers useful insights...

This study examines the essential characteristics of Virtual Reality (VR) that influence individual visit intention towards a touristic product. Despite the extensive research about VR, however, only little has examined the impact of factors that alter customers’ attitudes and trigger purchasing intention. This study applied Information Systems Success Model and conducted a survey using the convenience sampling method with international tourists who visited North Cyprus. The data were analyzed using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) technique, and findings demonstrated that VR has great potential to influence visitors’ final destination by promoting tourism products and services. This paper revealed that VR—as a marketing medium—creates positive impacts and stimulates individuals’ intentions to visit a destination. The study provides implications for tourism sector actors such as tourism planners, policymakers, travel agencies, and hotel managers as we...

PurposeThis multilevel study investigates the effect of employees' perception of nepotism on tolerance to workplace incivility through the mediating role of psychological contract violation and the moderating role of authentic leadership in organizations.Design/methodology/approachUsing time-lagged data from 547 frontline employees working in four- and five-star hotels, this study's hypotheses were analyzed by conducting hierarchical regression analysis and hierarchical linear modelling.FindingsThe findings indicate that non-family members' perception of nepotism triggered perceived tolerance to the uncivil behavior of family members by the management and that this relationship between nepotism perception and tolerance to workplace incivility was mediated by psychological contract violation. In line with expectations, authentic leadership moderated the effect of nepotism perception on tolerance to workplace incivility.Originality/valueThis study is among the first to exa...

This study aims to examine the influence of constructive leadership practices on the service innovative behaviors of hotel employees by a serial mediation system that treats employee psychological safety and employee creativity as mediators. Empirical data were collected from full-time frontline hotel employees in Antalya, Turkey. By using both convenience and judgmental sampling methods, this study included 357 hotel employees. The results provide empirical evidence for all suggested hypothesized associations. In particular, the findings display that psychological safety and engagement in creative work tasks play intervening roles (in the form of a chain) in the indirect influence of constructive leadership on employee perceptions regarding their service innovative culture. The current work provides practical contributions for hotel industry professionals who are in the treatment of implementing psychological safety and employee creativity, in order to establish innovative service ...

The multilevel investigation examines the impacts of favouritism on non-beneficiaries’ turnover intention by focusing on the mediating role of psychological contract violation and the moderating roles of job insecurity climate and authentic leadership in family firms. Congruent with the theories of relative deprivation, belongingness, and social identity, this paper is among the first to propose and empirically examine how and when favouritism leads to higher or lower turnover intention in family firms. Having utilized time-lagged data from 576 non-beneficiaries who came from 101 work groups in 48 family firms in Turkey, our findings support the following: the significance of favouritism by demonstrating that non-beneficiaries’ turnover intentions are higher in family firms when they perceive favouritism to be high; favouritism in family firms positively influences psychological contract violation; psychological contract violation acts as a mediator of the association between favour...

Purpose On the basis of person–job fit theory and conservation of resource theory, this study aims to develop and test a model to examine the impact of polychronicity on frontline employees’ job performance in hotel industry and simultaneously, investigate the moderating effects of supervisor, coworker and customer incivility as stressors in the relationship between polychronicity and employees’ job performance. Design/methodology/approach Data are obtained in North Cyprus from 262 frontline employees working in four- and five-star hotels. Findings The results suggest that polychronicity refers to employees’ performance. Customer incivility negatively and significantly influences job performance, but coworker and supervisor incivilities do not. Unlike coworker incivility, both customer and supervisor incivilities moderate the relationship between polychronicity and job performance; that is, high customer and/or supervisor incivility weaken the positive relationship between polychron...

ABSTRACT Extant tourism literature reveals that the travelers’ satisfaction from a tourist destination is a significant determinant of their post-holiday behaviors. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of these variables on international travelers’ perceptions and to examine the relationship between destination satisfaction and positive word of mouth of the tourists visiting Tehran, Iran. International travelers participated by filling out a self administered questionnaire. A sample of 326 tourists was collected through convenience sampling, at the Imam Khomeini International Airport in November 2010. The lodging and transportation dimensions were found to have an insignificant effect on destination satisfaction. Key words: Destination satisfaction, international travelers, Iran, tourism, positive word of mouth, lodging.

In this study the effect of superior politics on frontline employees' behavioral and psychological outcomes was examined using data collected from 4- and 5-star hotels in Northern Cyprus. The research hypotheses were tested using LISREL 8.54 through path analysis. The model test results indicated that scarce resources are a significant determinant of superior politics. In addition, path analysis results showed that superior politics and scarce resources have a significant negative association with subordinate performance. The model test findings also demonstrated that superior politics and scarce resources are negatively associated with job satisfaction. This research, however, failed to uncover a significant positive association between subordinate performance and job satisfaction. Similarly, scarce resources and subordinate performance did not have significant associations with job commitment.

The aim of this study is to add to the current debates by reporting on a study concerning the employee’s perceived trust of their supervisor and organization and their outcomes in the organization. This study investigates the relationships between organizational justice, nepotism, trust and organizational citizenship behavior of frontline employees of 3, 4 and 5 star hotels in Tehran (the capital city of Iran). We hypothesized different dimensions of organizational justice and nepotism are related to trust in supervisor and trust in the organization which will in turn have influence on the organizational citizenship behavior of frontline employees. As a population of this study 20 hotels have been considered; 5- five star hotels, 8- four star hotels and 7- three star hotels have been taken into consideration and data collected from 248 (27%) of total 908 frontline employees. Key words: Iran, hospitality, Justice, Nepotism, Trust, supervisor, Organizational citizenship
