Etymology

First attested in the early 9^th century. Originally 辭 / 辞 (cí) in place of 詞 / 词 (cí)

子之中棄，天脫馽羈；玉佩瓊琚，大放厥辭。富貴無能，磨滅誰紀？ [Literary Chinese, trad.]

Zǐ zhī zhōng qì, tiān tuō zhíjī; yù pèi qióng jū, dà fàng jué cí. Fùguì wúnéng, mómiè shúi jì? [Pinyin]

And thou, whom God released in mid-career from earthly bonds, weaver of the jewelled words, thou wilt be remembered when the imbeciles of fortune and place are forgot.

Note that the meaning of this word has changed greatly from describing beautiful and elaborate writing to describing boastful and argumentative language (pejoratively).
