This book examines the way On Crimes and Punishments (1764) gave birth to modern criminal law and paved the long road towards the abolition of the death penalty and torture in Europe. Shedding light on the sources and circulation of Beccaria’s book across Enlightenment Europe, the authors of this study analyse the prevalent reaction at the time : how and why was On Crimes and Punishments considered a milestone and a turning point as soon as it was published ? The seventeen chapters in this volume provide interdisciplinary perspectives on a seminal work in European Enlightenment. Written by prominent Beccaria scholars across Europe, it furthers our understanding of the ideas and debates at the origins of the legal, political and economic culture of today’s world.

The Italian literary tradition is exceptional from the point of view of genetic studies since arc... more The Italian literary tradition is exceptional from the point of view of genetic studies since archives and autograph manuscripts were preserved very early on. Such a valuable heritage was studied as early as the Renaissance, when men of letters who defined themselves as bibliophiles, apprentices, and disciples of the great authors of the Medieval and Humanist traditions explored manuscripts which appeared as priceless teaching resources. This volume adds a literary approach to genetic studies. The case study of Italian manuscripts is a valuable vantage point to apprehend the construction of the figure of the modern author, and to understand the birth and formation of a language and of a literary tradition which drew their complexity from the study of the drafts of masterpieces.
From the Codice degli Abbozzi by Petrarch and the “author’s books” calligraphed by Boccaccio to the successive versions of Beccaria’s Dei Delitti e delle Pene and Manzoni’s I Promessi Sposi, including the preparatory manuscripts from Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso and books annotated by Tasso and Alfieri, this special issue of Genesis invites the reader into the workshops of the greatest writers in the Italian tradition, introduces their “loose sheets” and questions the processes of literary creation and interpretation. The last sections widen the topic to contemporary figures, from Gramsci’s “paper labyrinth” to Erri de Luca, including french translations of hitherto unpublished works by Elsa Morante and Antonio Tabucchi.

From the correspondance to the network: analysing, editing and recontextualising the letters of Pietro and Alessandro Verri. This article explores three intertwined threads: the history of the manuscripts of Pietro and Alessandro Verri’s Carteggio (1766-1797); the history of the editions of this correspondence, from the first anthology of letters (1879) to the recent publication of two volumes of letters as part of Pietro Verri’s Edizione nazionale (2008-2012); and the history of editorial and philological practices applied to 18th century epistolary corpuses, which, in a century and a half, gained in rigour to reach maturity in the 1980s, although the treatment of cyphers in the letters still raises methodological questions. The article then reinserts the Carteggio into the network of epistolary exchanges on the scale of the Lombard Enlightenment in order to rethink the character of “exceptionality” of this canonical work and to reintegrate it into a broader framework: the network, the galaxy of peers who intended to create a shared workspace.

The correspondence of the Verri brothers makes it possible to follow the evolution, throughout thirty years (1766-1797), of the development of the most important economic and political works of Pietro, together with the development of Alessandro’s literary taste through many experimentations with styles and genres. The first lived in Milan; the second in Rome: by their weekly correspondence, they developed a collaborative writing. Drafts and manuscripts are sent by post and are discussed and annotated, the text being shaped throughout these exchanges. But the correspondence of the Verri brothers does not only have, with regards to literary genetics, a productive function: the expressed opinions do not always reveal the counterpart’s ability to understand the work and its issues. Over time, brotherly friendship vanishes and so does the initial commitment (to encourage the other, to be an unbiased censor), as two different styles are developed, and the ideological gap becomes wider in the years of Revolution.

------------------------------------------------------------
From the correspondance to the network: analysing, editing and recontextualising the letters of Pietro and Alessandro Verri.

From 1766 to 1797, Pietro and Alessandro Verri exchanged 4.000 letters, between Milan and Rome, building up one of the most extensive correspondences in Italy. Postal delays and broken seals alerted them on the fact that their correspondence was probably under surveillance. Letters are fragile and exposed forms of communication, and using them to consign private, if not secret, information was not without risks. This contribution examines the techniques used by the Verri Brothers to protect the confidential nature of their exchanges, and looks at the effects surveillance had on the development of epistolary discourse.

This article draws on a costumary representation of XVIIIth century Rome - the poverty of the population, specifically in the Agro Romano, in contrast with the Cardinals' courts - to study the way Alessandro Verri (1741-1816) developed in his correspondence with his brother Pietro (from 1767 to 1797) and his sister-in-law Vincenza Melzi (from 1794 to 1816) a stern social and economic chronicle which brings to light the endemic and structural problems of Rome's finances and agriculture. Verri is best known for abandoning the critical views on Rome and Roman history he had developed in the essays written in Milan and in the first months of his stay in Rome in order to praise the Rome of the Arts and Letters, and to celebrate a vision of pontifical Rome besieged by the French Revolution and the Empire (see 'Roman Nights'). This article aims at highlighting the continuity in the intellectual career of one of the foremost chroniclers of Roman history, from the Ancien Régime to Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras.

In Good Company? Verri and Beccaria in the Baron d’Holbach’s literary circle
In 1761, a group of Milanese aristocrats founded a radical circle called Accademia dei Pugni, the « Academy of Punches », to substantiate the rumor lending to their debates such an animated turn that they ended in fist fights. Pietro Verri, his brother Alessandro and Cesare Beccaria were its founding members. They pioneered a form of friendship and literary exchange whose fruitful outlet was the journal Il Caffé (1764-1766), named in tribute to British coffee houses. At the same time, the success across Europe of Beccaria’s work On Crimes and Punishments (1764) granted the Milanese intellectuals access to the salons of leading Encyclopédistes in Paris. With the vagaries of travel, the promise of an alliance between the two intellectual circles soon vanished. Beccaria, feeling uneasy and homesick, started back home almost as soon as they’d arrived, while Alessandro Verri discovered a fervent, committed and bold sociability which awakened his enduring distrust of French Enlightenment ideas. Pietro Verri was greatly disappointed by the outcome of the travel: instead of confirming the European fame of the Pugni, it paradoxically turned into a withdrawal from the public sphere. This paper examines the way Alessandro Verri, in his correspondence, both overturns and contributes to the dissemination of a number of stereotypes concerning the sociability of his Parisian hosts."

This study of Alessandro Verri’s life and work is based on an in-depth analysis of his unpublished archives. His career bears witness to the crucial intellectual and political mutations of his time. Born in the Milanese aristocracy, Verri sharpened his claws during the controversies sparked by « Il Caffè ». Edited by his elder brother Pietro, who was strongly influenced by the reforms implemented by the House of Habsburg, « Il Caffè » was a radical journal pervaded with European thought and a spearhead for the spread of Enlightenment in Lombardy. When he died in Rome in 1816, Alessandro Verri had earned critical consideration and popular acclaim as a novelist who championed the cause of monarchic restoration and the doctrines of the Catholic Church. In which ways did he effect such a transition from his years in Milan, spent reflecting on the modernisation of legal institutions, satirizing society and criticizing literary academicism, to his stance in Rome, where he advocated loyalty to the canons of classicism and to Catholic conservatism ? The outbreak of the French Revolution cannot be the only explanation for such an intellectual development. Verri had always been a maverick inside the « Caffè »’s editorial board, questionning the validity of modern philosophy early in his career. Haunted by his fear of the « volgo », he had done away with Enlightenment as « the invention of freedom » and had committed himself to the promotion of a form of despotism, which, though mindful of the well-being of the many, should always resort to the reason of state to justify the authoritarian containment of the mob’s unruly passions. In the end, he felt the course of history had fully validated his restless criticism of the conceptual bases of the French Philosophes’ plea for the emancipation of the people.
