1. GENERAL
1.1. Introduction
This document is part of the latest edition of Repsol technical specifications, and refers also to the latest edition of
the Standards and Codes that are mentioned and/or applicable in it. Particular aspects for each project indicated in
the "Basic Design Data (B.D.D.)” document shall be transcribed to the individual Material Requisition.
The completely or partially application of this specification will be confirmed in the specific B.D.D. of each project.
At points where in this specification reference to specific paragraphs or parts of codes or standards is done, apply
the latest edition of the code or standard unless otherwise stated by Repsol. The indication in this specification of
the standard or code edition in force at the time it was written is aimed to clearly identify the criteria to be applied in
case in later editions have been moved or deleted. Repsol shall be informed in writing in case of discrepancies
between the publication mentioned in this specification and the latest edition of the Code or Standard.
1.2. Scope
This specification establishes the minimum requirements regarding the use of paints to protect elements and
equipment from corrosion in the Repsol’s industrial plants, taking into account the operating and envir onmental
conditions of the element or equipment to be protected.
This specification covers the paint systems, whether applied in workshop or on site, for all the new metallic
surfaces, and most of the cases of maintenance works.
The protection of metallic surfaces in special cases (galvanized, rubber lining, antiacid protection, etc.) is out of
the scope of this specification.
Also, this specification does not cover the painting of buildings.
1.4. Responsibility
Compliance with the rules and recommendations given in this Specification does not exempt partially or totally,
the designers/supplier, their respective responsibilities and guarantees or any other contractual obligation.

The measurement units to be used shall be the International System (SI), or the Anglo-saxon system of units, to
be stablished at the beginning of the project, though inches for nozzles and pipes diameter and pounds for rating
of flanges shall be used.
2. RANGE OF APPLICATION.
All the surfaces shall be painted with the suitable paint system according to paragraph 3 of this specification,
with the following exceptions (unless otherwise specifically indicated):
• Jackets of insulated lines and equipment, both of aluminum and of galvanized steel and stainless steel.
• Stainless steel and aluminum surfaces, except for those required for aesthetic or signaling reasons.
• Hot galvanized steel and non-ferrous metals, except for those required for aesthetic or signaling reasons (for
example, instrument air lines, drinking water lines, firefighting system lines, etc.)
• Other non-ferrous materials (for example, plastics, polymers, elastomeric materials).
• Mechanized surfaces and contact surfaces with gaskets.
• Clean masonry and concrete (except in those cases in which it is required for repairing.
• Metal sheets for insulation (roofs, etc.).
• Fireproof concrete and mortar, unless it is in an area of very aggressive chemical products or when it is a
part of the manufacturer’s system.
• Nameplates or any kind of special instructions included as a part of the equipment (for example, stamps).
• Valves items, equipment actuating parts, lubricating parts, pumps and compressors shafts and, in general,
any surface or equipment normally lubricated or having very short tolerances.
3. DESIGN
Painting systems to be used shall be the indicated ones in the standard drawing PE-B-0600.01 “Paint systems”.
In this standard drawing, the temperature which limits the use of each paint system is the operating temperature
of the element or equipment to be painted.
Painting system applied in each line or equipment shall be indicated in the relevant box of the Line List (HD-A-
0200.02) and the Equipment List (HD-A-0200.01), as well as in the equipment data sheets and isometric. In that
equipment where the manufacturer’s standard paint is accepted, a description of the paint system shall be
included.
Piping and equipment surfaces prone to be subjected to corrosion under insulation as indicated in ED-N-01.00
“External thermal insulation for equipment and pipes in hot services” shall be coated with under insulation
protection system as per PE-N-0100.01 “Thickness of insulation for equipment and pipes in hot services”
For all considerations, the temperature of the supports (skirts, legs, saddles, etc.) is supposed not to exceed
60 ºC, unless otherwise expressly indicated.
In metal surfaces that should be protected against the fire by means of fireproofing (steel structures, skirts,
saddles, spheres legs, etc.), painting system corresponding should be applied up to and including the
intermediate coat, unless otherwise indicated by the manufacturer of the fireproofing material. However, in any
case, the compatibility of the paint system with the fireproofing material should be verified in order to guarantee
the adherence between both.

In case of any process element or equipment (with the exception of storage tanks) requiring interior paint, the
paint system to be used, taking into account the operating temperature, the operating pressure and the kind of
product, and it shall be submitted to Repsol for its approval.
Regarding the finish of the manufacturing, all the surfaces of structural steel, including those ones that are going
to be fireproofed, shall be painted according to painting systems “Steel structures, skirts and saddles of
equipment” of the standard drawing PE-B-0600.01.
The contact surfaces of all connections to be executed at site shall be painted according to the project
requirements. Galvanized screws shall be used for the galvanized structural steel connections and the screws
without surface treatment shall be used for the rest of structural steel. The screws for structures shall be protected
according to note 28 of the standard drawing PE-B-0600.01.
In the case of screwed connections with slide resistance, contact surfaces shall not be painted and a surface
preparation shall be applied according to the friction coefficient assumed in the connection calculation and the
Table 17 “Classification that may be assumed for friction surfaces” of EN 1090-2 Ed. 2019. After this preparation
inorganic zinc silicate with the certification for the friction coefficient shall be applied. Finally, the remaining
system of protection with paint shall be completed in the field after the screw pre-tensioning.
All the supports with structural steel components shall be painted according to painting systems “Steel structures,
skirts and saddles of equipment” of the standard drawing PE-B-0600.01. Any other paint system shall be
subjected to Repsol approval.
Painting systems for storage tanks and spheres shall be the systems of “Storage tanks and spheres” of the
standard drawing PE-B-0600.01, taking into account the suggestions included in the construction specification
EC-B-53.00 “Painting application”.
The outside surface of the bottoms of the storage tanks shall not be painted.
In case of internal paint for storage tanks, the following scope considerations shall be taken into account:
• In crude oil and slops tanks, the bottom surface, the legs or the roof supports, the first and the last shell
shall be painted.
• In gasoline, naphtha and gasoil tanks, the bottom and the first 50 cm of the lower shell shall be painted.
• The tanks of gasoline, gasoil and kerosene with commercial quality (finished product for marketing) shall
be painted totally on the inside, including the sampler tubes.
• The carbon steel tanks used to storage products which can attack the steel (for example, osmotized water,
condensate, sea water) shall be painted totally on the inside.
• The carbon steel tanks used to storage products which cannot be contaminated with iron (for example,
styrene, drinking water) shall be painted totally on the inside.
• In tanks with insulated walls and not insulated roof, the roof and the 50 cm adjacent to the last shell shall
be painted.
• In carbon steel tanks used to storage products different from the ones indicated before, the following surfaces
shall be painted:
o Tanks at ambient temperature: the bottom and the first 50 cm of the lower shell.
o Tanks with heating systems: no surface shall be painted.
4d 3.4. Silos
The stainless steel, aluminum and plastic silos will not be painted. For carbon steel silos, the paint systems to
be used shall be the systems of “Storage tanks and spheres” of the standard drawing PE-B-0600.01.

The paint of above ground piping shall follow the paint systems “Equipment and piping” of the standard drawing
PE-B-0600.01.
For valves in stock provided with corrosion coating by the supplier, the manufacturer standard will be accepted
conditioned to achieve a minimum protection level appropriate for an atmospheric corrosiveness category C3

according to ISO 12944 and with the durability indicated in the Basic Design Data (B.D.D.) document of the
project.
In the case of automatic valves (control and on-off valves) and safety valves and thermal relief valves what is
pointed in paragraph 3.10.5. “Instrumentation” will be applied.
The painting of duplex stainless steel pipes shall be chloride-free.
Scraper traps shall be painted after completion of all tests and final inspection leading to the acceptance of the
equipment.
The anticorrosive protection in underground piping can be done following the painting schemes defined in PE-
B-0600.01 or the coating systems from ED-N-03.00 “Polyethylene coating for pipes”. The protective coating
system selected shall be defined in the D.B.D. of each project.
The protection of ductile cast iron pipes shall be carried out as indicated in the section "Materials" of the ED-S-
01.00 “Underground drainage systems”.
The sheds or cabinets whole surface shall be painted with one coat of primer paint and two coats of red enamel
finish paint.
3.7. Vessels.
The paint of vessels shall follow the paint systems “Equipment and piping” of the standard drawing PE-B-
0600.01. The paint systems “Underground steel drums” of the standard drawing PE-B-0600.01 shall be used in
underground steel drums.
The paint system to be applied in equipment with different operating temperatures will be according to the
temperature of each area, not according to the maximum operating temperature of the equipment. The paint
system under insulation, the insulation and the paint system of the non-insulated area will overlap in the transition
from the insulated area to the non-insulated area, according to figure 1.
In vessels for hydrofluoric acid alkylation service, the external edges of flanges and of threaded fittings shall be
painted with a coat of hydrofluoric acid detection paint (VALSPAR No. 220-Y-7 or equivalent).
In any case, painting shall only be undertaken after having carried out all tests leading to the acceptance of the
vessel.

Painting shall completely comply with the equipment and piping painting scheme of this specification and
standard drawing PE-B-0600.01, with the following special requirements:
• For structure, select paint system nº 1 of standard drawing PE-B-0600.01.
• For flare stack (except flare tip), select paint system nº 1 of standard drawing PE-B-0600.01.
• For liquid seal, select paint system nº 15 of standard drawing PE-B-0600.01.
3.9.1. General
Any equipment that could be included in the classifications below and not covered by painting systems detailed
in PE-B-0600.01, manufacturer standard will be accepted, conditioned to achieve a minimum protection level
appropriate for an atmospheric corrosiveness category C4 for equipment installed outdoors, and C3 for those
4d installed indoors, according to standard ISO 12944, unless other level of protection is specified in the following
paragraphs or the Material Requisition, and with the durability indicated in the Basic Design Data (B.D.D.)
document of the project.
The manufacturer standard will be acceptable conditioned to achieve a minimum protection level appropriate for
4d an atmospheric corrosiveness category C4 (durability M), according to standard ISO 12944 unless other
particular criteria is defined in the specifications for this equipment, which shall be applied.
For units package of air conditioning for rooms of computers, the cupboard and the panels of the cooling unit
shall be painting treated to the oven of high temperature. The manufacturer standard will be acceptable
conditioned to achieve a minimum protection level appropriate for an atmospheric corrosiveness category C3
(durability M) or higher, according to standard ISO 12944.
• Motors
The paint to be applied shall have anti-static characteristics, with a 25% aluminum limit in weight.
The end of the shaft will have an anti-oxidizing treatment for its protection during transportation and storage.
• Busbar ducts
All the metallic parts of the busbar ducts (including the metallic supports of the ducts) shall be properly treated
to prevent corrosion, preferably by using galvanized materials and the subsequent application of
phosphatized primers and one coat of baked paint to prevent deterioration. In indoor and controlled
environments, they shall have, at least, a galvanized treatment.
The external painting color shall be done as indicated in table IV or table V of this specification, depending
of the place of installation. Other paints are allowed, submitted to Repsol’s approval, if the solar absorption
coefficient is similar, so that allows the duct to reach the maximum conduction capacity.
The paint, external or internal, shall be fireproof and with low caloric power, and one coat of antirust paint
shall be applied.
Painting might be intumescent or projected mortar type and shall comply with the specification ED-N-02.00
“Passive Fire Protection of Structures, Equipment and CableTrays”

The internal paint of the enclosure shall be designed to withstand internal condensations. The color of the
finish coat shall follow the indications shown in (table IV or table V, depending of the place of installation) in
order to improve the heat transfer from the busbars.
• Transformers
All the metallic surfaces and external devices of the transformers shall be properly treated to prevent
corrosion in the environmental conditions detailed in the paragraph “Environmental design conditions” of the
specification ED-P-05.01 “Distribution transformers”. Moreover, this treatment shall be resistant to the action
of the insulating oil used.
The cooling radiators shall be hot-dip galvanized and shall be arranged to make easier the following paint
application, with the rest of the transformer elements.
After the termination of the corresponding sheet treatment, the following finish paint shall be considered
preferably:
o Two coats of antirust epoxy primer.
o Three coats of epoxy finish.
The total dry film thickness shall not be less than 140 microns for power transformers and 80 microns for
distribution transformers.
For oil-immersed distribution transformers, the paint shall be applied over the galvanized finish; for dry
distribution transformers, the flange shall be hot galvanized and later painted.
With the previous approval of Repsol, the oil-immersed distribution transformers could be allowed not to be
painted, due to the fact that the anti-corrosion protection is always guaranteed because the transformer tank
and the radiators are hot galvanized.
• Transformers neutral earthing cabinet
Earthing cabinets shall be painted once the plate has been carefully cleaned. Paint shall consist on one coat
of chlorinated rubber primer and two finish coats of air dry emanel. The minimum total thickness shall be 60
microns.
• Junction boxes and accessories
The color of the boxes shall be indelible and weather-resistant (rain, saline environment, UV radiation, etc.)
so that it does not degenerate.
Chlorinated epoxy paint or similar shall be used.
The boxes will have the following finish:
o Intrinsically safe boxes light blue (RAL 5012 or similar authorized color).
o Non-intrinsically safe boxes light gray (RAL 7001 or similar authorized color).
For the special case of stainless steel boxes, install them without painting is accepted, in case to install them
in marine environments it will be necessary to have an anticorrosion treatment. In these cases and for
polyester reinforced boxes that only could be supplied in the standard color of the manufacturer, the
intrinsically safe boxes shall be identified by means of an additional label in blue color (RAL 5012 or similar)
that indicates “Intrinsically Safe Circuits”.
• Electrical power supply to instruments panels
Electrical power supply to instruments panels shall have clear grey color (RAL 7032), painted and varnished
in origin.
• Electric switchboards
The switchboard manufacturer will submit his painting standards for Repsol approval. The color of the paint
will generally be light grey RAL-7032. The average thickness considered to be sufficient for the majority of
cases is 70 microns, although this value may vary in exceptional cases.
• DC UPS system, AC-UPS systems and AC variable speed drivers
All metal parts of the distribution panels shall be properly treated against corrosion and deterioration of the
paintwork.

Unless the manufacturer suggests an equivalent treatment, which shall be subject to the approval of Repsol,
the cycle shall consist of degreasing, stripping, phosphatizing, passivation and giving a finish coat to the
plates.
An anti-corrosive primer shall be applied.
Outer surfaces shall receive two coats of oil-and-moisture-resistant enamel; internal parts shall receive one
layer of special anti-condensation varnish.
Hinges, screws and bolts should be stainless-steel or given a cadmium coating; normal paint is not acceptable
as an anti-corrosive protector.
Moving metal components and all components subject to some kind of friction should be protected with
anticorrosive grease.
RAL color of the equipment shall be defined in the project.
• Synchronous generators
The manufacturer shall send their painting procedure along with their bid, which should be approved by
Repsol. The RAL color of the finish coat shall be defined in the project.
3.9.5. Instrumentation
For all instruments, automatic valves (control and on-off valves), actuators, safety valves and thermal relief
valves, manufacturer’s standard paint will be accepted, with the prior approval of Repsol, conditioned to achieve
a minimum protection level appropriate for an atmospheric corrosiveness category C4 (durability M) according
to standard ISO 12944. All this equipment does not require later application of paint, unless specifically required
to repair paint damage or to match a certain finish color.
3.9.6. Instrumentation
For all instruments, automatic valves (control and on-off valves), actuators, safety valves and thermal relief

3.9.7. Fired heaters and boilers.
Unless parts and equipment subjected to the standard drawing PE-B-0600.01, manufacturer standard will be
accepted under considerations specified in point 3.9.1.
In case refractory acid resistant coating is required, including for anchoring, ED-F-04.00 and standard ISO 8501-
1 will be applicable.
The surfaces of the flanges covered by the stiffener profiles, and the faces of these in contact with the sheet,
shall be cleaned and painted before its final placing, to avoid later impediments.
For other applications such us reflectant painting for fired heaters, temperature-sensitive paints, internal
anticorrosive painting for vegetable oils or used cooking oils, hydrofluoric acid detection paint (according point
3.7) vendor standards shall be followed for handling, storage, surface preparation and application, being
excluded this Specification and EC-B-53.00.
The paint materials and manufacturers should be those indicated in the construction specification EC-B-53.00,
and will have to follow all the prescriptions and recommendations there indicated.
The surface preparation and the application of the paint shall comply with the construction specification EC-B-
53.00.
The scope of the works, whether done in the workshop or on site, shall be carried out according to the
construction specification EC-B-53.00.

Appendix II of this specification provides the performance standard sheet CP-025 “Anticorrosive Painting /
Protection” that the engineering company shall complete in the Project. The engineering company shall include
the project drawing code and the references of the engineering and vendor deliverables, in order to verify the
compliance of each barrier with the provision at the design stage.
6. VENDOR´S DOCUMENTATION
Documentation to be provided by Vendor is indicated in the Requisition and, as a minimum, shall include those
established below. Also, identification, treatment, and format shall be as per specification ED-A-09.00
Requirements for vendor´s documents preparation.

APPENDIX I
COLORS
Unless, specific indication in D.B.D, the colors of the paint to be used in the finish coat of lines and equipment
and in the stripes to identify the line service are indicated below.
LINES
a) Finish coat color.
The colors to be used in the lines shall be according to the table II and table III.
The NON INSULATED lines (and sometimes equipment, in the case of auxiliary services) shall be totally
painted according to the corresponding paint system, with the finish coats of the basic color of each group,
excepting the color of the signs for pipes and storage tanks as detailed in the Figure 2 and Figure 3.
In the INSULATED lines (and sometimes equipment, in the case of auxiliary services) two identifying stripes
shall be painted on the insulation jacket (galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminum), according to th e
indicated in the Figure 2 and Figure 3.
The block valves of all lines shall be finished aluminum synthetic or anticaloric colors whenever applies.
b) Stripes to identify the service of the line.
When indicate in D.B.D, the lines shall be distinguished according to the fluid. A compact ring-shaped
identifying stripe of dark red color (RAL 3009) shall be painted upon the finish color according to Figure 2 and
Figure 3.
This identifying stripe shall be painted at the following places:
o At both sides of a valve.
o At both sides of an elbow.
o At both sides of a set of flanges.
o At the three ends of a tee o graft.
o At 25 cm (9.84 in) above the ground level, when the line has to be buried.
o At both sides of an expansion bellow or loop.
o Each 50 m (164.04 ft) in straight stretches without fittings.
o When the distance between two stripes is, as indicated above, greater than 50 m and less than 100 m,
an intermediate stripe shall be painted equidistant from the others.
In insulated pipes, the identifying stripes shall be painted at both side of the dark red ring-shaped stripe with
the color indicated in the Figure 2 and Figure 3.
c) Signs of pipes and storage tanks.
The signs of pipes cover the text, the dark red ring-shaped stripe, the identifying stripes for insulated pipes
and the arrow showing the flow direction.
The black (RAL 9017) alphabetical characters corresponding to the product (see “identification code” in table
II and III) shall be labelled on the dark red ring-shaped stripe. The text direction shall be according to the
Figure 4.
Fluid identification codes shall be indicated in the project BDD of the project and failing that, identification
codes shall be as per indicated on the sheet corresponding to the installation of the standard drawing PE -A-
0200.02 "P&ID diagram drawing. Numbers and letters for identification of fluids"
The arrow showing the flow direction shall be labelled with black color (RAL 9017). The size and the direction
of this arrow are indicated in the Figure 2, Figure 3 and Figure 4. The arrow shall be located a distance of
“2h” from the dark red ring-shaped stripe in case of non-insulated pipes and from the identifying stripes in
case of insulated pipes.

The finish colors for equipment (up to first flange connection) and their attached elements shall follow table IV
and table V, unless otherwise indicated by the Industrial Complex or the project B.D.D.
For equipment not included in the table IV and table V, the finish color shall be indicated in the bid request or in
