This dissertation aims to identify and apply the most suitable three-dimensional recording methods for wooden composite materials artefacts, in order to enhance our understanding of their physical state and to propose digital aesthetic restoration strategies.
In order to accomplish the aim of this project, 3D data capturing (Photogrammetry, 3D laser scanning and Computed Tomography) and digital aesthetic restoration methods have been applied on a 17th century casket from Anne of Cleves House Museum in Lewes. The casket was considered appropriate for this study because it consists of five different materials; primarily sycamore wood and alabaster, with painted surface locally, marbled paper and metallic elements.
By using these methods, the surface and the internal structure of the casket were recorded with great detail. The captured data were evaluated based on the resulting visualizations and the time spent for the completion of models. Subsequently the most suitable 3D model was used for the digital aesthetic restoration of the casket, using easy to apply methods and widely used software.

theories and practices have been changed, concerning what it is acceptable and what is not in the conservation. In the past few years new technology gave solutions to many problems and restrictions, including digital conservation of works of art. In this project, digital projects are going to be analyzed that are used for the digital conservation of cultural heritage, including examples. Afterwards the case study of digital restoration of mural of Theofilos in the “Marmarelli” bakery in Mesagros, Lesvos is presented and in the end future extensions of this study are proposed.

Η συντήρηση της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς, με τη σημερινή της έννοια, χρονολογείται από το 1950. Από τότε πολλές θεωρίες και πρακτικές έχουν αλλάξει, σχετικά με το τι είναι αποδεκτό στη συντήρηση και τι όχι. Τα τελευταία χρόνια λύση σε πολλά προβλήματα και περιορισμούς έχουν δώσει τα νέα τεχνολογικά μέσα, δημιουργώντας ψηφιακές αποκαταστάσεις των έργων τέχνης. Σε αυτή την εργασία αναλύονται τα ψηφιακά μέσα που χρησιμοποιούνται για την ψηφιακή συντήρηση της πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς, ενώ παρουσιάζονται παραδείγματα εφαρμογής της σε έργα τέχνης. Στη
συνέχεια παρουσιάζεται η περίπτωση μελέτης της ψηφιακής αποκατάστασης της τοιχογραφίας του Θεόφιλου στο Φούρνο “Μαρμαρέλλη” στο Μεσαγρό της Λέσβου, ενώ στο τέλος προτείνονται μελλοντικές προεκτάσεις της μελέτης αυτής.

The restoration and the aesthetic reintegration are considered to be the last step in the process of conserving a work of art. In this project, we analyse theory and practice of aesthetic reintegration, special features and limits, when it comes to mural paintings and the most popular techniques, which have been used in the past or are still in use. In addition, we refer to the contribution of new technologies in the aesthetic reintegration of works of art, the techniques and software that are used for the digital aesthetic restoration of mural paintings, explaining through
examples these applications. Following, as a case study, we investigate proposals for the aesthetic reintegration of the mural painting of the ceiling of Saint Nicolas Ragavas church at Plaka, using digital technology. From the suggestions that were made, we selected the technique with the use of “neutral” color, the uniform colour technique and the combination of these two techniques. In case the aesthetic reintegration is carried out using the digital technology, the imitative
reintegration technique can be also used. Minimizing the visibility of damage that was created from the loss, without interfering with the aesthetic or the artistic value of the work of art, were some from the criteria of choosing the proper reintegration technique. In the future, more works of art will be restored via digital technology, because the use of technology gives us the benefit to regenerate them in the initial appearance, without the risk of being destroyed.

Η αισθητική αποκατάσταση είναι το τελευταίο στάδιο στην διαδικασία της
συντήρησης των έργων τέχνης. Στην παρούσα εργασία διερευνώνται οι απόψεις και οι πρακτικές της αισθητικής αποκατάστασης, οι ιδιαιτερότητες και οι περιορισμοί στην περίπτωση των τοιχογραφιών και οι δημοφιλέστερες τεχνικές, που έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί στο παρελθόν ή που εξακολουθούν να εφαρμόζονται σήμερα. Στη συνέχεια αναφέρεται η συμβολή και οι εφαρμογές των νέων τεχνολογιών στην αισθητική αποκατάσταση των έργων τέχνης, τεχνικές και λογισμικά που χρησιμοποιούνται για την ψηφιακή αισθητική αποκατάσταση των
τοιχογραφιών, ενώ δίνονται και παραδείγματα εφαρμογών. Ακολούθως
διερευνώνται προτάσεις για την περίπτωση της αισθητικής αποκατάστασης στην οροφογραφία του Ι. Ν. Αγίου Νικολάου Ραγκαβά στην Πλάκα, με τη χρήση των ψηφιακών μέσων. Από τις προτάσεις που δημιουργήθηκαν, επιλέχθηκαν η τεχνική με τη χρήση “ουδέτερου” χρώματος, η τεχνική με φόρμες ενιαίου χρωματισμού και ο συνδυασμός των δύο αυτών τεχνικών. Στην περίπτωση που η αισθητική αποκατάσταση γίνει μόνο ψηφιακά μπορεί να εφαρμοστεί και η τεχνική της μιμητικής συμπλήρωσης. Η μείωση σε μεγάλο βαθμό του κενού που δημιουργείται από την απώλεια και η βελτίωση της αναγνωσιμότητας της μορφής και του περιεχομένου της οροφογραφίας, χωρίς να προσβάλλουν την αισθητική ή την καλλιτεχνική αξία του έργου, ήταν κάποια από τα κριτήρια επιλογής των κατάλληλων τεχνικών αποκατάστασης. Στο μέλλον, όλο και περισσότερα έργα θα αποκαθιστώνται μέσω ηλεκτρονικού υπολογιστή, αφού δίνεται η δυνατότητα να αναδημιουργηθούν στην αρχική τους κατάσταση, χωρίς να κινδυνεύουν να καταστραφούν.

Condition report of artefacts is an important part of the conservation treatment process. Nowadays, digital technology provides more advanced methods, and researchers are using 3D models to illustrate cultural heritage artefacts in a continuation of traditional methods.
This paper aims to apply and evaluate the method of Computed Tomography (CT) in order to be used for condition reports, based the resulting visualizations and the time spent for the completion of the model. In order to accomplish this aim 3D data capturing have been applied on a 17th century casket from Anne of Cleves House Museum in Lewes, UK. The casket was considered appropriate for this study because it consists of five different materials; wood, alabaster, with painted surface locally, paper and metallic elements. 
As showed by this research, Computed Tomography provided results regarding the construction technique, the exact materials and the internal and external condition of the artefact.
