It is deemed a settled science that leader emotional intelligence is theoretically and empirically relevant to leadership effectiveness. However, how leaders' emotions affect their functional effectiveness has not been adequately addressed. Drawing on the notion of organisations as political spaces, we posit that leaders' political skill is an important mechanism that carries the effects of their (individual, hence trait) emotional intelligence onto their effectiveness as leaders. Since all political spaces are inherently local, we therefore build a framework by which the mediating influence of leaders' political skill in the relationship between their trait emotional intelligence and functional effectiveness can be investigated within the uncertain context of public service reform in Nigeria.

Objective: The objective of this review is to spotlight, based on contextual fit, the essence of the Total Quality Management (TQM) concept, advance the context-specific tools for its adoption, and suggest Critical Success Factors (CSFs) researchers and management practitioners should consider when considering any TQM initiative. Method/ Analysis: The traditional narrative review design was used. Based on the authors' extensive readings, a number of TQM tools and CSFs reflective of Lee's conception of the paradigmatic shifts in management practice were identified from the extant literature. A synthesis of a selected set of TQM tools and CSFs form the paper's argument. Findings: The results show that when conceptualised to reflect the appropriate management context (mechanical, biological , or social), TQM can impact organisational outcomes based on intervention in six areas. Five management tools and a set of three foundational CSFs form the operational grid for a typical TQM programme. Novelty: Against the backcloth of the five revolutions in management, this paper presents a set of five management tools that could be used across industry groups in implementing TQM programmes based on the pedestal of three foundational CSFs.

Purpose- The main objective of this study is to determine the leadership style preferences of four-star hotel employees based on their emotional intelligence (EI) profiles and demographics. Design/methodology- Data were collected from a sample of 190 four-star hotel employees. Descriptive statistics were used in identifying the level of employees' emotional intelligence and the leadership styles preferred in the sampled hotels. Further, two-step cluster analysis was used in clustering the respondents based on their level of emotional intelligence and their leaders’ leadership styles/demographic profiles. Findings- Two clusters emerged: low EI cluster of employees (44.21% of study sample) and high EI cluster of employees (57.79% of study sample). The low EI cluster is predominantly single, male, having 1–3 years of working experience and educational level less than high school; the high EI cluster are mostly married, female, with 4–6 years of working experience and have diplomas. However, employees from both clusters expressed preference for transformational leadership. Originality/value- The study extends prior research that identified employees’ EI, preferred leadership styles from employees’ perception and developed an EI model for evaluating hotel employees. The result could be used in soft-skills training need determination in hotel industry.

This study aims to develop a research model that establishes causal links between facets of trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) and perceived self-efficacy (PSE) of teacher-leaders as a response to some conceptual and methodological issues plaguing the emotional intelligence (EI) and PSE fields. Scoping review method of knowledge synthesis and Toulmin’s Argumentation Model were employed in developing the model. The resultant model establishes trait EI and PSE respectively as distal and proximal antecedents to teacher-leaders’ performance. The study contributes a theoretically grounded roadmap for exploring the roles of emotional and behavioural dispositions of teacher-leaders in school leadership.

Although the Political Skill Inventory (PSI) is the benchmark measure of the political skill construct, the existence and frequent use of other measures suggest that the PSI fails to cover the content domain of the construct comprehensively. This study utilised the extant political skill measures in developing a robust and parsimonious political skill scale for assessing the political sensitivity of teacher-leaders in higher education. Cognitive tests, behaviour coding and respondent debriefing were conducted to evaluate a 38-item pool on political skill in a sample of 36 teacher-leaders drawn from nine polytechnics situated in Northeast Nigeria. The scale's interrater agreement was computed using Fleiss' κ statistic based on categorical data from five expert reviews. In a two-stage process, we validated and established the item quality of an initial 15-item trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) scale in teacher leadership in higher education. First, we compute the interrater agreement (κ = 0.87) based on the trait EI domain using data obtained from a panel of nine experts. Second, item-rest correlation and item factor loading for the 15-item trait EI scale were determined based on data collected from a pilot sample of 61 teacher-leaders working with higher educational institutions in Northeast Nigeria. The results of the item-rest correlations (in two rounds) reduced the scale to nine items with excellent psychometrics (Cronbach alpha = 0.928; average interitem correlation = 0.589). This result was confirmed through the item factor loadings (range: 0.626–0.855) computed using JASP software.
