Nonfrasa is delighted to present TOREH△, an exhibition that humbly explores the evolution and artistic exploration of printmaking. We invite you to witness the beauty and significance of this lesser-known art form.

Throughout the years, printmaking has quietly evolved alongside other art practices. Often overshadowed by paintings, it has been commonly considered less important due to its mass-produced nature. However, our exhibition aims to challenge these perceptions and shed light on the unique discourses and characteristics that printmaking offers.

TOREH△ is more than just a title. It reflects the act of making cuts and carvings, paying homage to the traditional techniques that artists have adapted and refined over time. The inclusion of the delta symbol (△), which symbolizes change and difference, further emphasizes the theme of exploration and new directions in printmaking.

Recent years have witnessed the remarkable development of the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) in Asia, from the global popularity of the Japanese games and anime industries, to Korea’s film and pop music successes. While CCIs in these Asian cultural powerhouses aspire to become key players in the global cultural economy, Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia and Thailand are eager to make a strong mark in the region’s cultural landscape.

As the first handbook on CCIs in Asia, this book provides readers with a contextualized understanding of the conditions and operation of Asian CCIs. Both internationalising and de-Westernising our knowledge of CCIs, it offers a comprehensive contribution to the field from academics, practitioners and activists alike. Covering 12 different societies in Asia from Japan and China to Thailand, Indonesia and India, the themes include:

State policy in shaping CCIs
Cultural production inside and outside of institutional frameworks
Circulation of CCIs products and consumer culture
Cultural activism and independent culture
Cultural heritage as an industry.

Presenting a detailed set of case studies, this book will be an essential companion for researchers and students in the field of cultural policy, cultural and creative industries, media and cultural studies, and Asian studies in general.

A Geographies module publication from the Department of Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths University of London.

Each text in this collection is an act of summoning, a calling forth and rendering visible the shadows that haunt society. In summoning spectres, we hope to encourage new and strange encounters with that which have remained hidden in dark shadows. We hope to show you tonight that primitive accumulation is not some forgotten singular crime – a one-off misdemeanour – but is ongoing all around us.

“Liquidity, Inc.” is an unpredictable video art that plays for 30 minutes. What’s being shown by the artwork might not be something that we can relate to straight away, moreover in the context of Bali. However, this paper aims to pour the artwork back to another clean container, to look back at one of Hito Steyerl’s bizarrely montaged fictional documentaries. As water becomes a more and more important matter to talk, think and encounter within our daily lives in the changing climate, along with possible connections on Bali’s tirta (water) belief, this writing aims to give a perspective on how we could view water in its present and future, in Bali and beyond, through an artwork such as “Liquidity, Inc.”

Keywords: water, liquidity, video art, installation

In the midst of the 2020 pandemic, an intriguing writing project landed. It was uncertain how it could be done with all the restrictions, as the project requires involvement of a heritage that needs to be observed directly. Yet gradually it leads to encouraging better understanding of our position as humans in this current situation. The heritage was Ida Bagus Njana’s sculptures. Njana is a well-known sculptor from Mas Village, Ubud, Gianyar, Bali. His works have been said to be the start of modern Balinese sculptures, especially his wood works. Very little of his works still exist in Bali, namely in his own family museum Njana Tilem Museum, then Museum Puri Lukisan, Pura Taman Pule temple, and Taman Werdhi Budaya. Existing writings on Njana lie in the existence of Pita Maha, the community or group of painters and sculptures in the 1930s. However, when conversations took place with his family in 2020, Njana’s sculptures were not merely an artwork to be sold, it’s filled with spiritual thinking and expressions. His works with the title “Dewi Pertiwi” (meaning: Goddess of Earth) are filled with surrealism - not only its elegant carved shapes being different from the traditional Balinese methods, but also its mysterious narration about the Goddess itself. It was later observed that these narrations were not that mysterious. It actually came from Njana’s knowledge from scriptures (lontar), which means he really thought through what he was expressing about the Goddess of Earth narratives. These “Dewi Pertiwi” sculptures speak of the environment and earth that we live in and serve as somewhat reminders. This then inspired us to continue the conversation of appreciating and understanding these narrations with our current life. And interestingly landed as a curatorial project “Pertiwi” with the theme resilience in a form of website, where Njana’s Dewi Pertiwi sculptures were part of its starting point.

Lalu, bolehkah kita membicarakan tentang moral?

Part of "Dark Shadows: Spectres of Primitive Accumulation"
Introduction, Glossary + Acknowledgement included

In Bali, the emergence of a new god called ‘the god of US dollar’ has arguably become a haunting figure that has overwhelmed the relationship of the people to the existing deities and the land. Yet academics, historians, and anthropologists continue to read Bali as ‘the island of the gods’, and do not seem to have acknowledged this transition specifically. Instead it seems to have been visualised and developed by native artists. Visual culture in this example becomes the critical discourse that summons the socio-cultural implications of worshipping this alternative deity into the general social consciousness.

Appropriating Balinese painted characters and icons such as the one from the wayang (shadow puppets) stories, Balinese scenery paintings or installing a gigantic “Not For Sale” sign in the middle of the hectares of a rice field, represent a few of those critical discourses. Take for example the use of wayang, in the form of dolls and batik painting cloths as you can see in one of the projected images. The puppet in the middle represents the island of Bali which existed with the support of mother earth. The others strangling her are greedy individuals or corporations who seek to bundle up the island between them signifying raksasa-raksasa, meaning monsters, indicating the generator of ‘the god of US dollar’. In evoking these figurative forms there is an appropriation of the traditional wayang narration. Rather, than telling a usual religious Hindu moral story, here it narrates the on-going forms of primitive accumulation resulting from tourism investments that change, for instance, the functions of cultivated, inherited and sacred lands. The purpose of the artwork here is to create a cultural consciousness for these issues.

Now, appropriated further as cut out masks, one of the mother earth and one of the monster, this visual narration asks: who would you cut out that represents yourself? But this is not about masking ourselves to be any of these mythical characters; this is about unmasking them. Money has become the almighty in Bali; ‘tourism, economy, and addiction’ have been identified as the three main elements of this specific socio-cultural phenomena. Here, the spectre of primitive accumulation is not a ghost, but believed to be a ‘god’.
