This Is Not an Atlas gathers more than 40 counter-cartographies from all over the world. This collection shows how maps are created and transformed as a part of political struggle, for critical research or in art and education: from indigenous territories in the Amazon to the anti-eviction movement in San Francisco; from defending commons in Mexico to mapping refugee camps with balloons in Lebanon; from slums in Nairobi to squats in Berlin; from supporting communities in the Philippines to reporting sexual harassment in Cairo. This Is Not an Atlas seeks to inspire, to document the underrepresented, and to be a useful companion when becoming a counter-cartographer yourself.

With its multiple dimensions and functions, urban agriculture has the potential to contribute to a sustainable urban development process, depending on how it is executed and who is included. In this study, we promoted multi-stakeholder dialogue about the outlook of urban agriculture in Maputo and Cape Town in form of interviews, meetings, field visits, farmers’ meetings and scenario-building workshops. The goal was to create a common vision with the different actors – farmers and gardeners, non-governmental organizations, social movements, enterprises, scientists and policy makers – and to develop strategic measures for positive change that served as the basis for formulating recommendations.

Focusing on practical answers this handbook assembles various modules for the creation of green learning spaces. At the same time it enables insight into the broad creative experiences of urban gardeners.

Here DIY knowledge of the gardening amateurs from Allmende-Kontor, Prinzessinnengarten and Bürgergarten Laskerwiese meets expert knowledge from the trained gardeners and farmers of Bauerngarten, Peter-Lenné-School and Humboldt University of Berlin. An open knowledge transfer in terms of discussions, seeds, garden map, redworms and recipes takes place.

It’s a compilation of Berlin farmer’s shrewdness, flowery manuals and common banana skins – for everyone looking for how to get the hands really dirty!

ABSTRACT:As part of kollektiv orangotango+, we co-edited an international collection of activist, academic, and artistic “counter-mappings.” Because counter-mapping is historically closely connected with, and indebted to, anti-colonial struggles and decolonial politics, we hoped to locate our work within the wider debates about decolonial cartography and the decolonizing of the map. At the same time, preparing, producing, and distributing this publication posed a number of questions and problems. We use this short article as an opportunity to reflect on the editing, publication, and dissemination of This Is Not an Atlas, as well as to trace possible ways beyond the book for Not-an-Atlas as an ongoing project.RÉSUMÉ:Dans le cadre du kollektiv orangotango+, les auteurs ont coédité une collection internationale de « contrecartographies » activistes, universitaires et artistiques. Urban gardens are spreading in many cities across Europe, with community gardening being a fundamental form of urban agriculture. While the literature reveals the essential role that community gardens can play in terms of learning and education, no studies have investigated the training needs for participants in community gardens to ensure their successful development. The goal of this article is to evaluate the training requirements of urban community gardens to ensure their successful implementation and their contribution to sustainability in European cities. Two questionnaires of users’ needs analysis were designed and implemented in Berlin, Bologna, Budapest, and Cartagena. The results unveiled the need to re-enforce the training in the formation and community building phases of community gardens towards ensuring the creation of an engaged gardening community to maintain activity, particularly for top-down activities (e.g., research-related gardens). Users claimed their need for...

This chapter introduces the basic idea of »This Is Not an Atlas« and its history. It explains why the publication starts with a love-hate relation to maps and atlases. It also shows how critical cartography can be a starting point for both, criticizing the power of maps as well as actively engaging in mapping and making critical maps. This chapter positions the atlas in relation to activism, art and academia and sketches out the other chapters one by one. It proposes how maps and mapping can be seen and used as tools for action, to tie networks, to create political pressure or to create visibility for marginalized groups. Maps are thus instruments to criticize, educate, show spatial subjectivities and support self-reflection.

In different cities and in diverse ways, we-the authors of this chapter-are connected to gardens, to building the urban commons and to knowledge creation. We met at the International Conference of Critical Geography " Precarious Radicalism on Shifting Grounds: Towards a Politics of Possibility " in Ramallah (Palestine) in July 2015. The organisers of the conference wanted to create a space where scholars, activists, artists and others interested in critical socio-spatial praxis could discuss how " the rise on authoritarianisms, revanchists' responses, encroachment of fundamental rights, precarity of subsistence, social relations, employment, or the consolidation of populist right wing and fundamentalist movements, [eclipses and undermines] the political space and fundamental work of individuals, communities and movements around the world. ". The conference wanted to be an opportunity to share thoughts on how to transform these times into " a moment of political possibility by reconsidering and/or expanding existing paradigms as well as by reconnecting solidarities and struggles " 1. The letter conversation that is reproduced below was written part in preparation and part at the aftermath of this stimulating conference. We found that the 'letter' was a form of communication that reflected well the type of connection and relation we were trying to build, and at the same time suitable to look at the future while creating an 'active memory' of the process, emotions, and exchanges we were living. In these letters we discuss our experiences of being embedded in often contradictory green urban activities while also being scholars theorizing about those developments. We share our doubts, motivations and ways to contribute to (urban food) movements from this double position, what questions arise and how to deal with them.
