It explores how debates about authority and authenticity are embedded in the deeper histories of area studies and in long-standing conflicts dating from the earliest years of the field of Slavic and East European Studies. The discussion about authority and authenticity within feminist circles mirrors larger conflicts between proponents of the totalitarian thesis and the so-called revisionists. The conflicts between these two schools precipitated a continuing epistemic crisis that also infects the academic cultures of Eastern Europe and is exacerbated by the neoliberalization of academic knowledge production. The epistemic cultures perpetuating Cold War stereotypes may lead to self-censorship or dissuade young researchers from studying the gendered aspects of lived experience in the communist era.

The authors, born in the 1960s and self-identified feminists, became voices of the women’s movement in post-1989 Poland. From their novels, the picture of late socialism emerges as either nightmarish (Filipiak) or grotesque (Bator). Examining family relations, but also intimate relations (understood as political), the author argues that the novels’ focus on gender/sexual differences is consistent with the dominant message of the women’s movement in Poland, which after 1989 lost sight of class differences, contributing to their naturalization and taming. Through the aforementioned examples, the author demonstrates that late socialism is an essential component of the founding story of contemporary feminism in Poland, and that the topos of the conflict between mothers and daughters is a useful tool of its anti-communist identity politics. Discussing the issue of the literary genre, the article proves that the choice of a quasi-autobiographical novel, based on the Bildungsroman scheme, harmonizes with the biographical, artistic and political settlements of the ‘breakthrough generation’ with late socialism and transformation.

In the last years the focus has turned towards the era of late socialism, that is the 1970s and 1980s. Many writers who attempt to present and reevaluate these decades and their ongoing influence on biographies and societies today grew up or came of age in this era. Our main contention is that different forms of life-writing, especially autofictions and autobiographical novels, have become the dominant narrative device for addressing and narrating the socialist past. Accordingly, the contributions to this cluster explore the era of late socialism, examining its different and often contested meanings not only from the perspective of the past but also from the perspective of today. Thus, we explore the role of autobiographical writing in commemorating the past as well as in demonstrating the demise of socialism, as represented in contemporary literatures in Czech, Polish, Romanian, and Russian.

In the Communist Manifesto Marx writes about the “spectre of communism”, which “haunts Europe” and against which “all powers of old Europe” have united: “Pope and Tsar, Metternich and Guizot, French Radicals and German police-spies”. The communist party had not yet been created, the program had not crystallised yet, there were not yet people who would have identified themselves with the ideas of communism. Nevertheless, representatives of the old feudal and the new capitalist worlds had already protested against them. And they opposed them fiercely, using all available tools, both legal (prison sentences, fines) and extra-legal (assaults on members of left-wing organisations, destruction and arson of their premises, social ostracism).

I show that they devote an inordinate amount of space to communist women. The function of the images of communist women of Stalinist times, as presented in the publications being discussed here, does not merely boil down to providing a historical reckoning with the emancipation policies of the People’s Poland project. These women are also – and perhaps primarily – a useful tool in contemporary debates on women’s rights. In their role as the anti-model of the emancipation policy, female communist dignitaries serve as a cautionary tale against the excessive liberation of women.

Referring to Michel Foucault’s lectures on “revolution which becomes an existential project,” the author frames Wasilewska neither as a communist icon nor as a symbol of national betrayal, but instead as a living human being, a social actor, a person strongly embedded in the historical and geopolitical context of her era. The author reconstructs the process of shaping the communist identity in prewar Poland, points to the moments of transgressing subsequent boundaries—gender, national, and class—and uncovers a gradual exploring of the limits of the communist transgression by the protagonist.

The author reconstructs the process of shaping the Communist identity, pointing to the moments of transgressing subsequent boundaries: gender, national and social.

Jakie miejsce wyznaczają im w swoich projektach historiograficznych?

The article is devoted to a selection of women's (auto)biographies published in Poland after 2000... more The article is devoted to a selection of women's (auto)biographies published in Poland after 2000. The author concentrates on two problems: firstly she proves that female (auto)biography can be included in the identity politics which in Poland is a part of transformation discourse and a reaction towards it. Women assume here the role of the chroniclers of family/national community, but are also the reproducers and guards of the social order. The narrators often disregard the "female experience of history:" womanhood is here transparent and its traces need to be searched in the gaps of the narrative. Secondly, the author shows that women's (auto)biographies are not only a response to identity/memory politics but also a pertinent element of the process of producing the past subordinated to the stakes of contemporaneity. The author also points to recent trends in feminist studies in women's (auto)biographies.

The author presents institutional problems (i.e. organizational, financial), which limit dynamic development of the discipline and its impact on the society. She also discusses tensions between an academic affiliation of gender studies and its political aspirations rooted in the tradition of feminist movement. Finally, the author describes recent methodological debates on gender discourse—its theoretical inspirations and practical use.

Autorka upatruje rozwiązania trudnej sytuacji kobiet w nauce w reformie akademii w duchu etycznych i politycznych założeń przyświecających powstaniu gender studies.

While in her early writing Manuela Gretkowska played with the categories of gender, sexuality and... more While in her early writing Manuela Gretkowska played with the categories of gender, sexuality and nation, deconstructed them successfully, using the literary strategies and figures such as parody, camp, grotesque, in her recent novels she faces the problem of female experience in Poland (or the experience of Polish women) along with the one of description of such, implying the notion of political involvement of the writer. Works such as "A Pole" (2001), "A European" (2004) and "A Citizen" (2008) grasp not only personal experience of a female author (pregnancy, literary work, decision to settle down in Poland), but the political situation of Poland having the direct impact on the life of Polish women (EU accession, anti-abortion wars, the position and influence of the Catholic Church, political activity of the Women’s Party established by Gretkowska). Without feminist labelling Gretkowska in fact demonstrates and achieves what may be considered the core of feminist rhetorical policy (personal is political, feminist moment of truth, consciousness rising and speak out), though creating and sustaining the tension between the female experience (Polish Mother, domestic martyr) and feminist activity (warrior, political advocate). Interestingly, her recent works are written in a form of diary, which shortens the distance between the author’s personal “message” and perception of readers, who are allowed to find the “truth” about themselves (their own lives) in the act of identification with the author’s experience. According to Adriana Cavarero ("Relating Narratives: Storytelling and Selfhood", 2000), one’s basic drive is for listening to the story of one’s own life narrated by the other. In the act of storytelling selfhood is established and recognized in the public sphere. As for Hannah Arendt, to whose works Cavarero refers, private life is meaningless for others; it is deprived of memory, language, history. Reading Gretkowska’s novels, Polish women are encouraged to build their political subjectivity, recognize their individual and collective needs and desires, learn how to fight for their rights. Openly a(nti)political in her early works, Gretkowska has recently become politically involved in the public and literary activity. The aim of the paper is to grasp this change not only in textual but in rhetorical aspect of her fiction as well, accompanied by the change(?) in women’s reflection on their situation in Poland after 1989.

It cites the theories of Sigmund Freud on the loss of an object, Julia Kristeva's description of a melancholic and Judith Butler's definition of realistic diagnosis. The author claims that under the surface of clearly expressed racial tensions in the "Passing," the two protagonists have a problem of gender identity and sexual desire. The author demonstrates why the protagonists are looking the mother, their object of desire.

The paper discusses four collective books from the series “Ekonomia Literatury” (Economy of Literature): "Ekonomiczne teorie literatury" (Economic Literary Theories); "Ekonomie w literaturze i kulturze" (Economies in Literature and Culture); "Literackie ekonomie" (Literary Economies); "Ekonomia w badaniach literackich. Z recenzji wydawniczej prof.
Z recenzji wydawniczej prof. Jerzego Smulskiego
"Encyklopedia gender. Płeć w kulturze" to przystępnie napisane i obszerne kompendium wiedzy o jednej z prężniej rozwijających się subdyscyplin współczesnej humanistyki. W blisko 200 hasłach podsumowuje stan badań gender studies na Zachodzie i w Polsce; wyczerpująco i merytorycznie wprowadza w historię studiów feministycznych i queer.
Czytelników początkujących wprowadzą w tematykę płci kulturowej najwybitniejsze polskie badaczki i badacze związani z Instytutem Badań Literackich PAN. Odnajdą oni w "Encyklopedii gender" wprowadzenie do trudnych niekiedy pojęć i często mylonych kwestii.
A dzięki bogatej bibliografii "Encyklopedia gender" zachęca do dalszych poszukiwań. Książka ta z powodzeniem wypełnia lukę na polskim rynku wydawniczym, gromadzi i porządkuje osiągnięcia humanistyki ostatniego półwiecza.
Personal histories, family fortunes, and forming political identities will be analyzed using a biographical method. Thus, they will help answer the question of what drove Polish Jews to join leftist organizations.
