Since empathy is currently of similar relevance for academics in both the natural sciences and the humanities, the concept forms an exceptional subject for exchange and collaboration between the “two cultures”. However, the concept of empathy carries different meanings across disciplines and was based on opposing paradigms throughout the history. In this introductory chapter, Weigel briefly outlines four constellations that are significant for the diverse cultural and conceptual history of empathy and its related concepts: the discovery of the mirror neurons and empathy research in neuroscience and experimental psychology since 2000; the roots of empathy in the concept of “Einfuhlung” from aesthetics around 1900; the conceptual overlap with sympathy in the eighteenth century; and the Christian and pre-modern history of sympathy, compassion, and pathos.

Abstract In contrast to the attractiveness of the theory of memory and trauma discussed in the first part of Freud’s Jenseits des Lustprinzips (Beyond the Pleasure Principle), the second part, dedicated to Lebenstrieb and Todestrieb, still seems to confront its readers with considerable problems. The article analyses the way Freud arrived at his idea of the drive (Trieb) by considering contemporary thinking about biological inheritance (Hering) and the mortality of organisms based on cell theory (Weismann, Hartmann, Gotte). Taking as his starting point the idea that the ›life‹ of an organism can be regarded as a ›detour to death‹, Freud developed the dynamic ›drive‹ as a counterpart to biological ideas. For Freud, 1) ›drive‹ was rooted in the physical body and thus preceded the pleasure principle of the psyche; and 2) Todestrieb and Eros were the result of a reconceptualisation in psychoanalytical terms of different energies of ›life‹ with opposite trajectories.

Ende 1991 fand im Kulturwissenschaftlichen In stitut des Wissenschaftszentrums Nordrhein Westfalen Essen eine Tagung zum Thema »Das Geschlecht der Allegorien« statt. In Heft 4/1992 der »kritischen berichte< erschien bereits eine ausführliche Analyse dieser Tagung. Bis auf zwei Beiträge sind nun alle Vorträge veröffent licht. Gegliedert in drei Blöcke»Typen allegori scher Verkörperungen«, »Dekonstruktion des allegorischen Textes/Körpers« und »Allegori sche Verfahren der Moderne« werden Allego rien in ihrer historischen Situation, ihren politi schen Verschiebungen und sozialen Zuweisun gen untersucht. Vor allem aber geht es um die Frage, welcher abstrakte Begriff wird wie, war um, wann und zu welchem Zweck mit welchem Geschlecht ausgestattet. Der Aufsatz verortet die Arbeiten von Mosès in der Nachfolge der „Ersten Kulturwissenschaft“ um 1900 und von deren deutsch-jüdischem Index und beschreibt seinen originären Beitrag zur Fortschreibung dieses Denkens für das 20. Jahrhundert – Korrespondenzen zwischen jüdisch-religiöser Tradition und Philosophie/Philologie im Dialog zwischen Paris, Jerusalem und deutschsprachiger Kultur – im Horizont von Dekonstruktion und religious turn der 1970er bis 1990er Jahre. Im Zentrum steht Mosèsʼ spezifische Konzeption von Lektüre; deren Genese aus dem Dreieck von Bibel, Psychoanalyse, Literatur wird systematisch entlang dreier Achsen profiliert: der Beziehung zwischen (1) Dichtung und Traum, (2) Bibel-Lektüre und philologischer Lektüre, (3) Bibel-Lektüre und Psychoanalyse.

Im Horizont der gegenwärtigen Kultur, in der Algorithmen-gesteuerte Operationen immer mehr Arbeitsund Lebensbereiche durchdringen, betrifft eine Kritik der algorithmischen Rationalität vor allem Probleme, die aus der Janusgestalt der ratio erwachsen, der ratio als Vernunft und der ratio als Quotient bzw. Zahlenverhältnis. Denn die gegenwärtige Engführung beider Gesichter der ratio gibt den Transformationen jener Konzepte und Phänomene, die Objekte algorithmischer Rationalität sind, ihr spezifisches Gepräge. Die Frage nach der Genese dieser Engführung muss die nach dem Anderen der Vernunft einschließen: nach jenem Begehren, jenen Ideen, Entwürfen und Phantasmen, welche die digitale Kultur sowohl befördert als auch Spuren in deren gegenwärtiger Verfassung hinterlassen haben. Damit geht es nicht nur um den historischen Index der Technologien, sondern auch des Imaginären, das darin Gestalt gewonnen hat. Dabei gilt es, mit einer Kritik algorithmischer Rationalität einer Tendenz nicht weniger kulturund medientheoretischer Beiträge zu widersprechen, die den Verführungen digitaler Technologie erliegen und mithilfe der Theorie zu deren Nobilitierung beitragen. Gegenstand meines Beitrags sind die elektronische Gesichtsund Gefühlserkennung, genauer die Logik von Programmen Künstlicher Intelligenz im Bereich der Emotionsforschung (emotion AI) und deren Effekte für die conditio humana. Denn, so Hannah Arendt, »Menschen sind bedingte Wesen, weil ein jegliches, womit sie in Berührung kommen, sich unmittelbar in eine Bedingung ihrer Existenz verwandelt«1. The chapter discusses the role of cultural sciences (Kulturwissenschaften) in bridging the still existing gap between neuroscience and psychoanalysis against the background of the rising interest in mirror mechanisms, mimetic functions, imitation, simulation, embodiment, language and metaphors as well as their proximity to figures that have long belonged to the traditional subjects of the humanities. Knowledge on human expressions within a cultural-historical timeframe may be adduced to bridge the gap between data from empirical research and the evolution of the brain based on speculative knowledge.

Communism in twentieth-century Europe is predominantly narrated as a totalitarian movement and/or regime. This book aims to go beyond this narrative and provide an alternative framework to describe the communist past. This reframing is possible thanks to the concepts of generation and gender, which are used in the book as analytical categories in an intersectional overlap. The publication covers twentieth-century Poland, Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic, the Soviet Union/Russia, former Yugoslavia, Turkish communities in West Germany, Italy, and Cuba (as a comparative point of reference). It provides a theoretical frame and overview chapters on several important gender and generation narratives about communism, anticommunism, and postcommunism. Its starting point is the belief that although methodological reflection on communism, as well as on generations and gender, is conducted extensively in contemporary research, the overlapping of these three terms is still rare. The main focus in the first part is on methodological issues. The second part features studies which depict the possibility of generational-gender interpretations of history. The third part is informed by biographical perspectives. The last part shows how the problem of generations and gender is staged via the medium of literature and how it can be narrated.
