Kinder zeichnen schon sehr lange. Und es ist schwer vorstellbar, dass sie es nicht in jeder Kultur getan haben, die den allgemeinen Gebrauch von Ritzinstrumenten oder Stiften und Formen der bildlichen Repräsentation kannte. Dennoch ist die ›Entdeckung‹ der Kinderzeichnung ein genuin modernes Phänomen. Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert ist ein Interesse der professionellen Maler am Phänomen Kinderzeichnung nachweisbar, aber erst in den 1880er Jahren werden die graphischen Versuche der Kinder zum Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Reflexion. Die »Kunst der Kinder« etablierte sich in der Folge als ein wichtiges Instrument der Entwicklungs- und Intelligenzpsychologie, der Pädagogik und Psychoanalyse. Die Wissenschaften vom Kinde erschlossen das Zeichnen als ein Mittel der Kommunikation, welches Dispositionen, Bedürfnisse und Konflikte dokumentiert, die das Kind selbst (noch) nicht sprachlich artikulieren kann. Mehr noch als das Spiel oder die Phantasie- und Lügengeschichten soll die Kinderzeichnung seither Auskunft geben über Entwicklung, Intelligenz und Raumwahrnehmung, über psychische Veranlagung und psychoanalytische Ätiologie. Das Zeichnen wurde damit als Instrument einer Normalisierung des Kindes in Dienst genommen. Die Experimentalisierung der Kinderzeichnung brachte aber auch ein neues Verständnis der anthropologischen Funktion des Zeichnens hervor, das uns bis heute begleitet: Sie hat den Blick dafür geschärft, dass es sich schon bei der harmlosesten Kritzelei um ein Medium der Subjektwerdung des Kindes handelt, das es ihm ermöglicht und erleichtert ein erkennendes, denkendes und handelndes Subjekt zu werden.

Luego del políptico de La comunidad de los espectros, un nuevo comienzo se torna necesario. Un giro en el filosofar atento al espesor metafísico de la subversión epocal en curso en todo el orbe. Esa misma crisis revela ahora como insuficientes los métodos más osados de las Humanidades del siglo XX. Un punto de partida: el relato acerca de un supuesto proceso judicial por vampirismo acaecido en un remoto cantón de Hungría a principios del siglo XVIII.
Con el discurrir de las hipótesis aquí propuestas, las relaciones con la licantropía se volverán centrales y ambos fenómenos deberán ser objeto de una minuciosa ultra-historia que acompaña al lector hasta los tiempos paleolíticos del culto de la Gran Madre. Pero esto es sólo el comienzo de un viaje metafísico que, bajo las formas de la sangre, el sacrificio y la metamorfosis, nos conduce hasta el origen mismo de la vida-muerte sobre la Tierra como estación necesaria para una meditación sobre el futuro cosmológico de los seres hablantes. El Vampiro y el Hombre lobo son las figuras filosófico-conceptuales que, una vez desentrañadas, nos muestran la vía regia hacia una forma completamente nueva de rehabilitación del pensamiento especulativo bajo la forma de una “ontología analéptica”.
Desde los inmemoriales rituales del sacrificio antiguo, hasta la teología política inversa del vampirismo, pasando por una inédita filosofía de los virus, se delinea ante nuestros ojos el subsuelo a partir del cual se revelan las condiciones de posibilidad de todo pensamiento acerca del Ser y la actual obsolescencia de todas las formas en las que este último ha sido previamente mentado. De este modo, un tenebroso y enjundioso proceso judicial, hoy caído en el olvido, nos muestra que custodiaba, sin saberlo, los secretos supremos de todo lo existente que la inveterada tradición ha dignificado con el nombre de Cosmos. Se anuncia, así, el comienzo de la Segunda Era Metafísica.

De entre todas las imágenes gestadas por la serialidad contemporánea, las del final de la tercera temporada de Twin Peaks (ABC: 1990-91; Showtime Networks: 1990-2017) constituyen un punto límite, un espacio de interrogación sobre las formas narrativas seriales construido sobre una estética negativa o apofática, de acuerdo con el término teológico que designa la vía mística negativa de aproximación a lo divino –del griego ἀποφάναι que significa “decir no”, “negar”–. En muchos sentidos, Lynch establece un pacto con el espectador que no se apoya en la premisa de un guión cerrado ni sobre el uso de los recursos del drama isabelino y la narrativa artúrica tan presentes en la ficción televisiva contemporánea, sino sobre una fórmula hasta ahora inédita en la serialidad: la concepción de cada episodio como una visita al estudio, al taller del artista. El trabajo sobre motivos recurrentes concibe las secuencias como lienzos, ensayos o coreografías que suscitan una sensación similar a la que producen otras formas estéticas recientes fundadas sobre las ideas de gesto y huella, indagación y montaje de tiempos alternos, quebrados. El propósito de este capítulo, contenido en el libro La estética televisiva en las series contemporáneas (Ed. Miguel Ángel Huerta y Pedro Sangro) es acercarse tanto a la vía negativa, apofática, que guía a Lynch como a una comprensión más amplia de las formas de la negatividad que la serialidad televisiva contemporánea reclama en relación con la representación del hogar y la comunidad: la cólera, el horror y el círculo serial del mal, desde una metodología comparada, fundamentanda en la iconología de Aby Warburg y basada sobre todo en el concepto de negatividad en la filosofía y la teología. A través de series tan diversas como The Leftovers (HBO: 2014-2017), True Detective (HBO: 2014-), Fringe (Fox: 2008-2013), Breaking Bad (AMC: 2008-2013), Mad Men (AMC: 2007-2015), Penny Dreadful (Showtime: 2014-2016), P’tit Quinquin (Arte: 2014) o Westworkd (HBO: 2016–) se realiza un recorrido a través de los fundamentos de la negatividad en la estética de la ficción serial contemporánea.

Resumo O edital do encontro propõe as seguintes perguntas: "qual História da Arte narram, veiculam e debatem as instituições museológicas? Qual história da arte os museus nos oferecem?" Nesta proposta de comunicação o foco é na Villa Farnesina como fonte de alguns elementos fundamentais da história da arte praticada pelo historiador da arte alemão Aby Warburg. A Villa Farnesina, em Roma, é uma edificação do começo do século XVI e contém ricos afrescos de Rafaello Sanzio (e oficina), Sebastiano del Piombo, Sodoma e Baldassare Peruzzi. Os afrescos feitos por Peruzzi na Loggia di Galatea e na Stanza del Fregio aparecem nas pranchas 40, 41, 53 e 54 do "Atlas Mnemosyne" de Warburg. O argumento desta comunicação é de que estas duas salas podem ter fornecido alguns elementos fundamentais para o pensamento warburguiano, ressaltando o museu como instância que contribui para os fundamentos epistemológicos da história da arte. Sublinha-se aqui: as imagens de temática astrológica de Peruzzi que teriam contribuído para os interesses de Warburg por caminhos não dominantes na perspectiva historiográfica do Renascimento; a intrigante "Cabeça de Jovem", por anos atribuída erroneamente a Michelangelo, imagem-sintoma que insere um elemento dissonante" no conjunto dos afrescos. Por fim, pode-se ver reunidos na Stanza del Fregio alguns dos temas que mais obsedaram Warburg em suas pesquisas. A Villa Farnesina reúne em seus espaços decorados uma experiência de sensibilidade para o que é dissonante, estranho, aquilo que não encaixa nas narrativas historiográficas produzidas até então sobre o Renascimento. My dissertation on Vitruvius' figure of proportion, published in 1987, deals with the normative aesthetics associated with this figure since antiquity. I develop my argument starting from Aby Warburg's "Picture Atlas" and from Rudolf Wittkower's thesis that Vitruvius understood human proportions metaphysically.  The first chapter deals with the architectural practice and ideas of measurement in antiquity. In doing so, I argue that Vitruvius did not understand his proportional figure metaphysically, but as a metaphor of contemporary architectural practice and ancient metrology. In the following chapters, I discuss the reception of Vitruvius' proportional figure in the epochs from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Here it is shown, for example, that practicing artists such as Cesare Cesariano certainly understood the practical background of Vitruvius' proportional figure. A humanist like Daniele Barbaro, on the other hand, took a different approach. He replaced Vitruvius' anthropomorphic system of proportion with the intellectually more demanding system of proportion in music. Further chapters deal with the ideas of proportion of Ghibertis, Filaretes, Francesco di Giorgio Martinis, Leonardo and Dürers.

The word enthusiasm is derived from the Greek ἐνθουσιασμός/enthousiasmos and has a meaning of being possessed by a god (ἔνθεος/entheos) referring to θειασμός/theiasmos, ‘inspiration’.  The person who is possessed by a god surpasses their normal state of being and ascends to a higher plane or ἔκστασις/ekstasis. This state of being is caused by breathing in vapours, drinking elixirs, or by frantic dancing, through which the gods enter the body. During the Homeric Age in Greece, enthousiasmos was connected to ecstatic prophecies and rituals, such as the Pythia, the Dionysian bacchanals, the dances of the Maenads. In the post-Homeric Age, Plato (ca. 427-347 BC) and Aristotle (384-322 BC) shifted the meaning of enthousiasmos towards the artistic inspiration of poets.
Even today, we use ‘enthusiasm’ to describe a special energy that can suddenly overwhelm us: an affect of rapture that radiates out towards the audience. Yet, through the ages, the concept has not always carried with it the positive connotations of the ancient Greeks. Along the way, enthusiasm and rapture became contaminated with (religious) fanaticism and even with manipulative deceit.
In his book Philosophie und Enthusiasmus, Bernd Bösel asks why we so often view enthusiasm as a suspicious affect in the modern-day intellectual context.  He thinks the reason is found in the Zweikampf between enthusiasm and melancholy on the one hand, and enthusiasm and reason on the other.  According to the author, the first conflict is situated on the vertical scheme of the mood, which holds the extremes of highs and lows, as with the pathological diagnoses of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and even psychosis.  The second conflict polarises enthusiasm with reason, making enthusiasm an emotion that hinders rational thought.  In both positions, enthusiasm is not seen as part of a reliable epistemology. These splits gradually started to develop from the 17th century on, although enthousiasmos was revalued during the Age of Enlightenment and the Romantic Era as a positive stimulant of creativity and Ideenflucht. 
Despite a few flickers on the cultural historical time line, enthusiasm has mostly been marginalised in modern Western philosophy: as an excessive urge, or as a harmful exaggeration of emotions that leads to madness. Bösel calls for rehabilitation of enthousiasmos as a knowledge paradigm that shouldn’t be seen as the opposite of melancholy genius, nor as Besonnenheit, but as something which deserves an intrinsic place in the cultural sciences: in the Zwischenreich des Begehrens und Fühlen.
The rehabilitation of enthousiasmos as a criticised affect of the mind also interests me from an iconological standpoint. Is enthousiasmos the subject of any iconographic traditions? Is enthousiasmos an aesthetic concept within the art historical method? Can enthousiasmos be a part of a visual epistemology? I will discuss these questions in three chapters: a case on Pentecost in Christian iconography; an analysis of the Pygmalion myth within the 18th-century sparks of creative passion, and a new interpretation of Aby Warburg’s (1866-1929) Pathosformel as a variant of the entheos paradigm.
And finally: Anne-Louise Germaine Necker or Madame de Staël (1766-1817) will join us on our journey. After all, her De l’Allemagne (1810) is an unparalleled defence of how enthusiasm, wisdom, and sensibility go together.

Is what we see the ‘truth’? Can anamorphic imagery resolve the dichotomy between science and faith? In the 1640s Emmanuel Maignon, a French monk in residence at Trinitá dei Monti, the Minim Monastery in Rome, created an anamorphic wall painting of St John of Patmos in an upstairs gallery. This was about a hundred years after the controversial work of astronomers Johannes Kepler and Tycho Brahe, and when Galileo Galilei, placed in house arrest by the Pope for presenting a heliocentric solar system that was not only heretical as it contradicted Holy Scripture but philosophically ‘foolish and absurd’, was nearing the end of his life. Studies of optics did not originate in the renaissance, as there were many advances between the ninth and fourteenth centuries when Euclidean theories were tested and advanced. In particular the Arab scholar, Alhazan, (985-1040) wrote about how optics influenced our understanding of the nature of reflection and refraction of light. In the 17th century, three men who were friends with one another, a Jesuit, Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), Minim friars Jean-Francois Niceron, (1613-1646) and Emanuel Maignan, (1601-1676) also devised proposals for catoptric and anamorphic projection, using developments optics and perspective to question divine light and perception in a merging of science and faith asking if we can rely on what we see, or if there is a hidden, perhaps heretical or even divine message hidden in the imagery. This paper examines some examples of anamorphosis, at Trinitá dei Monti painted by Maignon, at St Ignazio the Jesuit church in Rome painted by Andrea Pozzo (1691-1694) and of course Hans Holbein’s The Ambassadors painted in 1533 and hanging in the National Gallery. It begins by questioning the philosophical meaning and concludes with a technical examination of how catoptrics and anamorphosis work, through a student workshop where we attempted to create an anamorphic image in the studio.

Resumen: uno de los principales aportes teóricos de Georges Didi-Huberman es su intento de pensar la historia del arte como disciplina anacrónica. Esto es posible a partir de Walter Benjamin y su concepción de la imagen dialéctica como método de indagación histórica, en el cual el proceder del historiador consiste en contraponer fragmentos, ruinas u objetos heterogéneos para lograr una imagen no sintética del pasado. Tal proceder recupera aquello que se mantiene invisible para el progreso histórico, pero, a pesar de ello, se resiste a desaparecer, pues permanece entre las ruinas y las cenizas de la historia. Este método permite a Didi-Huberman introducir el anacronismo en la historia del arte, apoyándose en el montaje dialéctico de las imágenes. Ello implica poner en cuestión la periodicidad progresiva dominante en la historia del arte, así como encontrar alternativas epistemológicas para la imagen en tanto saber sobre el arte y la cultura.

In order to complement the text by Aby Warburg on Manet (published in this issue of Engramma, German edition and Italian version by Maurizio Ghelardi), we present a series of fragments pinned in 11 unnumbered sheets, dating back to the last months of Warburg’s life [WIA 102.1 .2]. Fragments are published in German version and Italian translation by Maurizio Ghelardi. In the Commentary by Monica Centanni, the main themes of these adnotations are put in evidence: The ancient sarcophagi as energy catalysts;” Sphaera barbarica” and katasterismos; Liberation of the demons and emancipation (Olympic) of the chthonic gods; Images of the Nymph: the handmaid, the Victory, Hecate; Dinamogrammi;  Denkraum / Zwischenraum; Notes for the Bilderatlas Mnemosyne; Manet as a guide through the paths of Mnemosyne.

« "La Naissance de Vénus" et "Le Printemps" de Sandro Botticelli : étude des représentations de l’Antiquité dans la première Renaissance italienne » est la dissertation de doctorat d’Aby Warburg, parue en 1893. S’opposant, en creux, à la définition de l’idéal classique par la « grandeur tranquille », donnée par Winckelmann, Warburg y envisage l’influence de l’Antiquité sur la Renaissance au point de vue de la représentation du mouvement vivant : le style des œuvres renaissantes est marqué, dans leur manière de conférer un mouvement à des objets inanimés et accessoires, par des formes reçues de l’Antiquité. L’historien de l’art démontre cette thèse à l’appui des deux célèbres tableaux mythologiques de Botticelli : dans l’agitation des cheveux de Vénus qui flottent dans le vent ; dans le gonflement du manteau que lui tend l’Heure qui l’accueille sur le rivage ; dans les plis de la robe des Grâces du "Printemps", Warburg décèle la reprise d’archétypes antiques, en particulier le type de la nymphe, qui incarne un corps en mouvement sous les traits d’une jeune femme généralement vêtue d’une fine étoffe. Ce texte fondateur dans l’œuvre de l’iconologue contient ce faisant la première formulation théorique du thème de la «survivance» de l’Antiquité, un thème qui servira à Warburg de fil conducteur jusqu’à l'ultime projet de l’Atlas Mnemosyne, qui devait constituer un répertoire visuel de formes déterminantes pour la création artistique.

É possível seguirmos conduzindo investigações intelectuais a partir do postulado da excepcionalidade antrópica? A distinção histórica entre Natureza e Cultura orientou uma tradição de pesquisa atualmente em exaustão, pautada sobre um profundo contraste ontológico: de um lado, teríamos um regime de ser que não se permite ludibriar por artifícios linguísticos, não se deixa convencer pela ficção, pois se encontra em uma marcha pré-determinada pelos instintos inatos decorrentes de sua existência puramente mecânica: tal regime é chamado Natureza. Do outro lado, teríamos um regime de ser que, por sua vez, constrói toda a fundamentação de seu tecido social a partir de jogos linguísticos, de acordos poéticos confeccionados enquanto inscrições da letra na forma do Nome da Lei, marcados por uma profunda indeterminação criativa compreendida como livre arbítrio: tal regime é chamado Cultura. Entretanto, o capítulo geológico a que chamamos Antropoceno exige uma reformulação dessa distinção, dado que as forças culturais se tornam a mais drástica força geofísica, e as forças naturais o mais profundo agente político. Disso resulta a necessidade de refabulação das propriedades mnêmicas da ficção e da linguagem, impossíveis de serem compreendidas como traço de excepcionalidade antrópica. Desenvolveremos, no presente escrito, uma tentativa de estudo das formas de conexão dos saberes alternativo à tradição excepcionalista. Nos pautaremos no postulado de um cosmos fraturado, cuja manifestação fissurada se dá no espetáculo das imagens e cuja leitura é o princípio de funcionamento da vitalidade cósmica. Exploraremos as formas como o limite do fundo sem fundo, o Real lacaniano a conduzir as pesquisas nas humanidades desde os meados do século XX, pode escapar de seu costumeiro correlato teórico que é a tanatopolítica, ao sublinharmos as incontáveis formas como uma fratura ontológica pode produzir, inversamente, a vida, aquém e além da civilização antrópica.

O livro é uma contribuição à história do pensamento urbanístico e suas tradições. Construído por meio da montagem, operação que permite criar oposições, fricções e incongruências, na qual a impureza é o grande libelo conceitual, ao lado da busca incessante da alteridade. Nesse labirinto, tensiona-se pensamento e argumento, instigando suas possibilidades e limites. Trata-se de um livro dedicado aos vários outros deserdados da história oficial do movimento moderno em arquitetura e urbanismo, evidenciando que uma herança, qualquer herança, é sempre uma montagem, uma construção, e que essa herança dupla que a autora buscou montar - volume 1 (2020), fantasmas modernos e volume 2 (2021), pensamentos selvagens - é apenas uma entre várias outras possíveis. nasce a Vienna nel marzo del 1909, da una famiglia di origini ebraiche che appartiene al milieu artistico e intellettuale della città-il padre è un avvocato di buona reputazione, già compagno di liceo di Hugo von Hofmannsthal. La madre un'apprezzata pianista che ha studiato con Anton Bruckner. I suoi insegnanti, in università, sono Julius Schlosser, cui si lega in un rapporto elettivo-con Schlosser discute la tesi di dottorato su Giulio Romano e la cultura artistica del Manierismo-Hans Tietzte e Josef Strzygowski. Stringe amicizia con Ernst Kris, che di lì a poco lascerà l'insegnamento della storia dell'arte per la psicoanalisi. Nel 1936 Gombrich si trasferisce in Inghilterra prendendo servizio al Warburg Institute di Londra. Durante la Seconda Guerra mondiale è impiegato presso la BBC come specialista delle trasmissioni radiofoniche tedesche.

¿Hasta qué punto puede pretenderse que las obras de artistas latinoamericanos de carácter abstracto-geométrico fueron parte de escenas artísticas auténticamente “constructivas”? ¿Hasta qué punto es legítimo utilizar el término “constructivismo” para calificar el campo de los lenguajes artísticos no-objetivos en América Latina durante el siglo XX? Estas son algunas de las preguntas que Luis Pérez-Oramas (Caracas, 1960) intenta responder en este luminoso ensayo, que se publica aquí por primera vez en español, donde problematiza las luchas al interior del campo de producción artística en el que las abstracciones geométricas y no-objetivas practicadas durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX en América Latina –la escena constructiva de Caracas es un ejemplo de ello– se convirtieron en las formas más visibles de una modernidad artística, en “formas de “vida póstuma” de una cierta modernidad, como sobrevivencias de las soluciones abstracto-geométricas que identificaron a diversos proyectos modernos, como “alter-formas” constructivas sometidas a complejos procesos de transformación selectiva”.

In dieser Arbeit untersuche ich Gotthold Ephraim Lessings (1729-1781) Werk Laokoon oder über die Grenzen der Malerei und der Poesie (1766) . Die Arbeit gliedert sich in drei Teile: Zunächst betrachte ich kurz das Werk und analysiere seine Hauptpunkte und zwar Lessings Grenzziehung zwischen der Malerei und der Poesie. Als Beispiel dafür wird ein Vergleich zwischen Winckelmann und Lessing hinsichtlich der Laokoon-Gruppe gemacht. Als nächstes wird die Rezeption von Lessings Laokoon in Betracht gezogen und zwar in den Fällen J.W. Goethes, Aby Warburgs und Rudolf Arnheims. Mit Hilfe dieser Untersuchungen möchte ich einen Beitrag für ein umfassenderes Verhältnis von Lessings Werk leisten. Anschließend füge ich einen kurzen Überblick ein und widme mich der Frage nach der Gültigkeit Lessings Darlegungen heutzutage, nämlich im Laufe der modernen Kunstentwicklungen am Beispiel der Medien und des Films.

À Berlin, deux expositions sont actuellement consacrées à Aby Warburg (1866-1929), historien de l’art allemand : Aby Warburg: Bilder­ atlas Mnemosyne – Das Original (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, jusqu’au 30 novembre 2020) et Zwischen Kosmos und Pathos. Bilderatlas Mnemosyne (Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, jusqu’au 1er novembre 2020). Ce dispositif est pensé sous la forme de deux espaces complémentaires, dans des musées situés de part et d’autre du Tiergarten, le grand parc du centre-ville.

Nacidos a finales del siglo XX, los GIFs han regresado de la mano de las redes sociales. No son un simple formato de compresión sino una imagen intermedial. Un fenómeno cultural que condensa en su breve existencia y simplicidad técnica una serie de elementos propios de la cultura visual contemporánea. A simple vista pueden resultar imágenes sin ninguna importancia, meros residuos fragmentarios de la comunicación en la era digital. Pero si consideramos el incremento exponencial del intercambio de GIFs en internet en los últimos años debemos asumir que son más que un simple divertimento. Ya sean consideradas imágenes pobres, conversacionales, intermediales, banales o artísticas, conforman un conjunto disperso y fragmentario que responde al principio de clonación y réplica de la imagen digital. Sitios como GIPHY o Tumbrl acumulan colecciones que no paran de crecer. El archivo de la visualidad global es ofrecido como materia privilegiada para figurar las emociones. ¿Por qué estas imágenes parecen condensar expresiones, sentidos y emociones universalmente compartibles?  De qué modo la repetición de estos actos de inscripción mimética incorporan en nuestro cuerpo hábitos y expresiones. Desde los más simples y masivos hasta el GIF ART, el GIF-ITI o los implantes del Net Art este artefacto visual es uno de los protagonistas indiscutibles de la cultura visual 2.0. Sus particularidades técnicas, sus modos de existencia en la red hasta sus expresiones artísticas y creativas, pueden ser un medio de expresión y reiteración de emociones, un objeto anestesiante o un juguete óptico y reflexivo. Las plataformas que los albergan son  un gran síntoma de la cultura visual contemporánea donde podemos navegar para comprender  mejor nuestro propio tiempo.

Abstract

Born at the end of the 20th century, GIFs have returned with social networks. They are not a simple compression format but an intermediate image. Whether they are considered poor images, conversational, intermediate, banal or artistic, they make up a dispersed and fragmentary group that responds to the principle of cloning and replicating the digital image. What relationship do GIFs present with visual formulas that go through time? From the simplest and most massive to the GIF ART or the implants of Net Art this visual artifact is one of the indisputable protagonists of the 2.0 visual culture.

La historiografía del arte replanteo su abordaje de la imagen y las obras de arte: su sentido y su papel para interpretar el devenir de la cultura a partir de la primera mitad del siglo XX. El alemán Aby Warburg (1866-1929) da inicio a lo que se denomina iconología como método para interpretar la imagen en un sentido simbólico, ya sea en lo mítico, psicológico, ideológico, etc., en diferentes culturas y tiempos, además de que amplió el concepto de imagen.

In this essay, I read Moby-Dick as an allegorical description of the process of Ishmael’s healing from melancholy. Ishmael’s inane reveries at the beginning of the story evolve into a productive and self-creative narrative power. His initial melancholy reverie is represented in the novel as the narcissistic tendency of the subject to withdraw into oneself and sink into its own interiority, as well as the tendency to believe in a sentimental universal brotherhood. Ishmael manages to get free of his sterile daydreaming and regain contact with reality through a close experience of mortality and the confrontation with the power and complexity of writing.

En su Historia Intelectual del Siglo XX Peter Watson escribió que sería desafortunado considerar a la República de Weimar sólo como "una estación de paso" en el camino que llevaría a Hitler al poder. No sin razón la República alardeaba de una serie de logros, entre los cuales no eran los menores "el establecimiento de una serie de instituciones académicas de gran prestigio". Digna de mención entre ellas era la Biblioteca Warburg, producto de un individuo 1 "con accesos intermitentes de psicosis, adinerado y erudito" y que "al igual que T. S. Eliot y James Joyce…estaba obsesionado con la antigüedad clásica y con la forma en que podían ser perpetuados sus ideas y valores" (Watson 2002: 244).
