This paper extends theoretical and empirical debates on knowledge transfer practices in geographically dispersed project teams using a range of communications media. It presents quantitative data comparing work interactions between dispersed and co-located teams in five international, project-based firms. It shows that contrary to conventional wisdom, their respective practices are similar for many work activities such as search and routine

ABSTRACT This paper considers the role played by government in stimulating innovation to improve quality, profitability and competitiveness in construction activities. It questions whether governments should fund research and development in construction, and if so, what level and types of support might be appropriate to meet emerging needs. It addresses this with reference to the current debate on the public funding of science, citing Kealey and Pavitt. The author considers specific construction-related issues and changing conditions, indicating the need for more, rather than less funding by both private and public sectors. In conclusion, the author develops a third way, different from Kealey's and Pavitt's approaches. Construction requires a strong and vibrant research base, partly funded by government. Simultaneously, the state requires a research and knowledge base in order to fulfil its roles such as for governance of technologies in the built environment. A complementarity effect arises from both public and private funding - which is therefore greater than the sum of the parts.

Abstract: This paper addresses the relationships between creativity, innovation and organization by drawing on theories of play and examining their significance for the use of new innovation technologies in IBM. It contends that by doing so it deepens our understanding of the emerging role of technology in facilitating innovation in the under-researched services sector. By analyzing some central features of play and describing IBM's use of new technologies, such as Virtual Worlds, the paper explores some management ...

Manufacturers in the UK have to develop new and innovative ways to maintain hard-won market positions to protect proprietary technology or compete with low-cost economies. One approach is through services-led competitive strategies. In this first of two articles the authors deal with the need to prepare engineers for a manufacturing industry built around services. The second article (on page 36) examines the threats and opportunities facing manufacturers who move into services.

What is the opposite of innovation? In The Evolution of Civilizations historian Carroll Quigley cites the example of the Aztecs who at some remote point in their development started sacrificing people to their gods. This became so central to their view of their own success in the world that their practice of warfare shifted from destroying enemies to capturing them as sacrificial fodder. From a military effectiveness point of view, this turned out to be a bad move. Despite their superior numbers and advanced civilisation, when a few hundred ...

A new set of technologies is emerging that enables firms to innovate more rapidly, efficiently and accurately than ever before. This' Innovation Technology'(IvT) includes eScience, virtual reality, simulation and modelling techniques, and rapid prototyping. Indeed, it is possible that it will have as profound an impact on economic growth and social well-being in today's knowledge economy as the development of machine tools had on the industrial economy of the mid-19th century.

What is innovation? How is innovation used in business? How can we use it to succeed? Innovation-the ways ideas are made valuable-makes an important contribution to economic and social development, and is an increasingly topical issue. Not so long ago, there were no information technologies, commercial airlines, or television companies. Our parents were born into a world very different to today's, where television had yet to be invented, and there was no penicillin or frozen food. When our grandparents were born there were no internal ...
