The literature regarding proton MR spectroscopy (MRS) in WD is scarce and controversial. The purpose of this study was to determine the brain metabolic changes due to WD by using MRS. To our knowledge, this is the first time that MRS was performed in such a large sample of patients with WD. Thirty-six patients with WD and 37 healthy volunteers were examined with MRS in the parieto-occipital cortex, frontal white matter, and basal ganglia (BG). Ratios of the following metabolites were calculated in relation to creatine (Cr): N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline (Cho), myo-inositol (mI), and glutamine/glutamate (Glx). The mean peak line width was measured on each spectrum. Compared with control subjects, patients with WD had significantly decreased NAA/Cr ratios in the three studied areas (P < .005) and an increased mI/Cr ratio in the BG (P < .001). Cho/C...

The great routine in gastroenteroscopy services, low number of equipment and the lack of technical knowledge about the decontamination processes are factors that stimulate the inadequate endoscope disinfection, intensifying the risk of transmission of microorganisms. The electrolysed acid water has been effective in the inactivation and destruction of microorganisms. The purpose of this investigation was to verify the microbicidal efficiency of electrolyzed acid water (Cleantop WM-1) to decontaminate gastroscopes after their using in patients. Samples from biopsy channel of flexible endoscopes collected after patient use (n = 20) and after disinfection (n = 20) were cultivated in tryptic soy agar, MacConkey agar and Sabouraud dextrose agar. Seventeen of the 20 samples collected after patients examination yielded gram-negative bacilli, gram-positive coccus and yeast cells in contamination of 3 to 5 log10 uf...

The patient had been treated with pericyazine. The drug was stopped but the symptomatology did not improve. The diagnosis of Wilson's disease was established through ophthalmologic examination with slit-lamp that revealed the Kayser-Fleischer ring and laboratory abnormalities showing a low serum ceruloplasmin level and increased urinary copper excretion. T2-weighted axial magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the " face of panda signs" in the midbrain and pons.

These cases usually present with few symptoms or are asymptomatic, and treatment is controversial, in spite of the evolution observed. The endovascular approach has stood out as a treatment modality for this type of embolism with low morbidity and mortality rates. This article reports the case of a 30-year-old male patient victim of gunshot thorax injury with multiple entrance signs who was successfully submitted to bullet removal by endovascular technique after failed attempt by thoracotomy.

The authors considered the premise that scientific production in the field of health follows a mechanical description of phenomena without the clarity of motivating questions. The aim was to interpret material from expert reports, applied by medical students to analyze articles from renowned journals. This research project was exploratory, searching for latent meanings regarding methodological problems in a sample of papers. It was performed in a Brazilian medical school. The sample was intentionally built, consisting of articles related to original research in the field of health, published over the previous five years. The results came from text content analysis, performed by a professor and his medical students. (1) Failure to state a hypothesis is an equivocal practice: articles did not show clarity of hypothesis to demonstrate that their authors had epistemological knowledge of the methods chosen. (2) There is a certain belief that in normal scientific practice, hypotheses are unnecessary: studies without explicit hypotheses led to suppositions that they merely repeat dominant models. (3) Presentation of common sense as scientific conclusions: research brings together what would have mobilized the researchers initially. Absence of formal hypotheses leaves scientific production vulnerable when put under epistemological discussion. Conclusions from scientific articles are often confounded with common-sense statements. Quantitative research is suggested, for studying the frequency of occurrence of these dubious methodological points.

ABSTRACT Energy production from unconventional hydrocarbons has grown. The impacts are commercial and geopolitical but also to the environmental, given that the exploitation of shale, the way it's been done, entails a number of negative externalities. In this context the compliance appears to be effective to address the issue and needs to be studied from the
