Although, numerous clinical studies have shown the efficacy of catechin as a main bioactive compound in green tea, which has demonstrated a capacity in prevention and treatment of a wide range of diseases, it has poor potential for bioavailability and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. This study is aimed to investigate the effect of chitosan alginate nanocarriers encapsulated catechin in an aluminum chloride-induced dementia paradigm. The catechin-loaded chitosan-alginate nanocarriers were synthesized by ionotropic gelation (IG) technique. Physio-chemical characterization has been done by Zetasizer Nano system, Scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The synthesized nanoparticles showed optimal dimensions in the range of 45–50 nm. The memory impairment model was induced by injecting aluminum chloride (100 mg/kg) for 21 days. Treatment with aluminum chloride increased the AChE activity by inducing memory impairment (p

Cotton fabric because of finishing process has shrinkage behavior after laundering and for improving this problem, chemical agents utilize for anti-shrinkage. This temporary finishing can reduce shrinkage but has many environmental problems. Corona discharge treatment has been used for cotton fabric, other fibers and polymers. This treatment can reduce costs and environmental impacts. In this study, cotton fabric was treated by corona discharge instrument at 2 - 40 passages and fabrics were washed with laundering method. After four times laundering, shrinkage behavior of corona discharge treated fabric as compared with un-treated fabric decrease. After 10 passages of corona discharge treatment, water, dye absorption and shrinkage are modified but after 14 passages, despite of shrinkage improvement, dyeing properties decrease.

Pesticides are often used indiscriminately in a large amounts causing environmental pollution. Pesticides cause adverse effects on different body systems, including hematological and endocrine systems. Animal studies have shown the ability of organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides to disturb thyroid function, but evidence of such effects on human remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between exposure to pesticide and serum levels of thyroid hormones in pesticide sprayers. Blood samples were obtained from 40 cases and 20 controls after overnight fasting. Glucose, urea, acid uric and lipid profile were measured by enzymatic methods. Immunoassay methods were used for determining of TSH, T3 and T4 levels. The TSH level in sprayers (2.64±1.50 mIU/l, P=0.007) was significantly increased compared to control subjects (1.33±0.83 μM). Significant decreased in T3 and insignificant decreased in T4 level of sprayers

BACKGROUND Liver injury results in excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition in the liver, which is mainly produced by hepatic stellate cells (HSC). Alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and liver enzymes are the two hallmarks of liver injury. Previously, it has been confirmed that berberine (BBR) attenuates liver injury. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of Poly Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid (PLGA) encapsulated BBR against liver injury. METHODS Nanoprecipitation, encapsulation, and physio-chemical characterization of BBR-PLGA nanoparticles (BBR-PLGA-NP) have been done. The protective effects of BBR-PLGA-NPs and BBR against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-treated Wistar rats were investigated. The serum levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate transaminase were measured, and the expression level of α-SMA was quantified by qRT-PCR. To evaluate the liver changes, morphological and histological staining was done. RESULTS BBR-PLGA-NPs markedly reduced serum ALT and AST in rats treated with CCl4. Although the expression level of α-SMA was downregulated in the CCl4-injected rats that were treated with BBR, α-SMA expression in this group was still remarkably higher than the control group. α-SMA mRNA was significantly under-expressed (p < 0.05) by BBR-PLGA-NPs and the hepatic histology revealed BBR-PLGA-NPs made further improvements than free BBR. CONCLUSION The use of nanoparticle to encapsulate BBR is a worthy approach to enhance the curative effect of BBR against liver injuries, which donate a safe and effective drug delivery strategy to treat liver injuries.

Background: Gastric cancer is the fourth most common cancer worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related death. Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have shown that genetic diversities MUC1 (Mucin 1) and PSCA (Prostate Stem Cell Antigen) genes are involved in gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the association between rs4072037G>A polymorphism in MUC1 and rs2294008 C>T in PSCA gene with gastric cancer in northern Iran. Methods: DNA was extracted from 99 formalin fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples of gastric cancer and 96 blood samples from healthy individuals (sex matched) as controls. DNA was extracted followed by PCR using specific primers. Two desired polymorphisms, 5640G>A and 5057C>T for MUC1 and PSCA genes were genotyped using PCR-RFLP method. Results: The G allele at rs4072037 of MUC1 gene was associated with a significant decreased gastric cancer risk (OR = 0.507, 95% CI: 0.322–0.799, p = 0.003). A significant decreased ...

Gene delivery to hepatocytes is of great therapeutic potential because the cells are responsible for the synthesis of a wide variety of proteins that play important biological roles both inside and outside the liver. So far, several gene carriers/vectors have been studied for liver-targeted gene delivery, including viral and non-viral vectors. Among the various types of non-viral vectors, cationic liposomes and cationic polymer-mediated gene transfection seem to be the most promising approaches because of the relatively high transfection efficiencies of such vectors and the ability to target gene delivery by their chemical modification. On the other hand, the development of carrier systems that can escape from undesired tissue uptake and exhibit target-cell-specific gene expression are urgently required. In addition, for cell-specific delivery, the receptor-mediated endocytosis (RME) systems of various cell types are potentially useful, and a number of gene delivery systems have bee...

The Al(III) complex, [Al(salophen)2H2O]NO3, was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic (NMR and FT-IR) techniques. Then the binding of Schiff base complex of [Al(salophen)]+ type, where salophen denotes N,N'-bis(salicylidene) 2,2-phenylendiamine to calf thymus DNA, has been investigated by spectrophotometric, circular dichroism, spectrofluorometric, melting temperature and viscosimetric techniques. This Al(III) complex showed absorption hyperchromism in the range of 310-390 nm, increase in melting temperature, some structural changes in specific viscosity, when bound to calf thymus DNA. The binding constant has been determined using absorption measurement and found to be 1.82 x 10(3)M(-1) and 1.31 x 10(3)M(-1) in HEPES and Tris-HCl buffers, respectively. Also the fluorescence spectral characteristics and interaction of Al-salophen complex with DNA have been studied. Al-salophen bound to DNA showed a marked increase in the fluorescence intensity along with a bathochromic shift (5 nm). The intersection point of the binding isotherm indicated a binding site size of 12 bp per bound complex molecule in both HEPES and Tris-HCl buffers. The experimental results showed that the Al-salophen complex bound to DNA by non-intercalative mode and major groove binding was the preferred mode of interaction.

Various carcinogenic metabolites, including catechol estrogens, play a role in malignant transformation. An enzyme that is capable of neutralizing the genotoxic effects of these compounds is catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT). A variant form of this enzyme has been shown to reduce its activity by up to 4-fold; thus, we hypothesize that single nucleotide polymorphisms of the COMT gene can be a risk factor for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. To test this hypothesis, the genetic distribution of three different COMT polymorphisms at codon 62 (C→T), codon 72 (G→T), and codon 158 (G→A) were analyzed in 131 normal healthy subjects, 134 BPH, and 178 sporadic prostate cancer samples from a Japanese population. Results of these experiments show that the variant genotype at codon 62 (P = 0.060) and codon 158 (P = 0.047) are risk factors for prostate cancer but not BPH when compared with normal controls. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for cancer we...
