A meta analysis of studies concerning youth violence suggests that when children see themselves and are seen by surrounding adults as positive, prosocial leaders, they are less likely to become involved in bullying either as bullies or as victims (1). MFT’s have recently been encouraged to work more directly with children (2) and to adapt their service delivery methods to the needs of clients (3). The authors worked directly with 122 children in their community settings, involving parents and school officials as an encouraging audience (4) to the children’s new views of themselves. 90% of preteen girls (ages 9 to 11), and 100% of young teens of both genders (ages 12 to 14) saw themselves as more positive leaders after our 8 week program; 89% of their parents and 90% of school officials independently saw positive changes

Excerpt As faculty and graduates of the COAMFTE-accredited family therapy programs at Nova Southeastern University, we have had a unique opportunity to experience the applicability of family therapy to the dilemmas of immigrant families. In the multicultural context of Broward County, where our program is located, an estimated 25 percent of the total population was born outside the United States. An additional 42 percent are second generation, with at least one parent born outside of the U.S. (Census.org). In addition, the students in our family therapy program are often themselves first or second generation immigrants. (Monnay was born in Haiti; Bello in Colombia; and Palmer’s mother was born in the Dominican Republic.) We concur with family therapists who have stated that the systemic, relational stance of family therapy is uniquely suited to work with those who find themselves living in multiple cultural contexts (Mirkin, 1998). While we have no easy answers, we can suggest a few guidelines, honed from our own experiences, both professional and personal

Building on the evidence-based solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) approach, an innovative university and school district partnership has generated alternatives to suspension and arrests of at-risk youth. Previous policies emphasized a get-tough, zero-tolerance approach. The results of these policies were discouraging and especially detrimental to minority youth. Using university-based marriage and family therapy therapist interns trained in solution-focused techniques, the PROMISE program focuses on strengths and successes. Implemented in a large urban school district in the United States, the initial statistics show that the program has been more effective than the previous program utilizing get-tough policies. In the 2013–2014 academic year, the overall recidivism rate of suspended students decreased dramatically compared to the previous year. The percentage of students suspended within the same school year dropped from 50% in 2012–2013 academic year to 8% in the 2013–2014 acad...
