The Resistance was a reaffirmation of France's independence and individuality, as well as a struggle to regain freedom and, above all, national integrity. In fact, many historians appreciate that the French Resistance could have achieved more if it had been more effectively integrated into Allied plans and strategies. Thus, in this material we tried to present some short biographies of dentists who worked in the French Resistance against the German occupation troops, some of them even paying with their lives for the courage they showed.

No other man in history has influenced his era as decisively as Napoleon Bonaparte did. His life was that of an exceptionally gifted man, who knew how to make the most of all the opportunities offered by history. In this paper, we will approach the problem of dentistry, during the period when France was managed by the exceptional statesman, Napoleon Bonaparte, presenting in the second part of this material, the biographies of some personalities of French dentistry from that period.

Congenital absence of the teeth, affecting both physiognomy and mastication, can have a great impact on patients' quality of life. It may appear unilateral or bilateral; frequently, it associates with certain general conditions. Familial hypodontia in clinically healthy patients is rare. Genetic transmission, as a determinant factor in missing teeth, can be autosomal dominant, recessive, or related to the sex chromosomes. In case of congenitally missing permanent teeth, the corresponding deciduous teeth can be still found on the arch at adult age. The aim of this article is to present rare cases of familial non-syndromic unilateral and bilateral hypodontia in Romanian adult siblings, highlighting also a cross gene transmission between aunt and niece and evaluating the treatment options in accordance with patient's age and oral status. It shows that early diagnosis of hypodontia is crucial for the patient's future oral health. The decision to keep the temporary teeth or t...

Human health is the most important asset an individual can own. It is an important dimension to the quality of life and can be seen from at least three different perspectives: from its negative traits, it can be defined as the absence of disease (in this case, health indicators are data on mortality, morbidity and life expectancy), it can be considered as a good adaptation of the individual to his environment and as a proper functioning in this environment (in this case, the indicators focus on consequences: inconvenience caused by disease, functional disability, disability and/or social disadvantage) or it can be defined in the way it is considered by the WHO documents, in a positive way (as a physical, mental and social wellbeing), thus becoming a value.

The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the cytotoxic effect of endodontic medication in the treatment of apical periodontitis. Materials and Methods: The toxicity of four antibacterial products (Cresophene, Septodont. Ledermix, Riemser. R4, Septodont. Calxyl, OCO Praparate.) commonly used as endodontic dressings, has been tested on a stabilized human diploid cell line of fibroblasts ICP-23, similar to human diploid cell lines belonging to ATCC ( American Tissue Culture Collection). The outcome of the study, that run 96 hours, was expresed as a mortality test. Results: Statistic analysis of the mortality of a fibroblasts cell line (ICP-23) induced by different endodontic dressings highlights the lowest cytotoxicity for Ledermix and highest levels for Calxyl and Cresophene. In case of Ledermix, the cell mortality raised after 96 hours only with 50%, as compared to Cresophene and Calxyl, approximately twice. R4 had an intermediate value. Conclusions: Some proprietary antimicro...

Senescence is a biological process which is part of the normal vital cycle of the human individual and the understanding and evaluation of its specific aspects is of top importance. When not pathological and generating pathology, senescence is a biological step in human life which still makes it possible for diseases to take toll. That calls for an individualized approach of the elderly patient, in view of the numerous somatic, psychological and social changes that may occur. The elderly represent a significant, growing percentage of patients in a dental clinic and it is necessary to adequately approach each of them from a psychological point of view, paying attention to the assortment of specific ailments that affect them. Quite often, in the physician-patient relation, the dignity of the elderly gets tainted due to the lack of economic and medical solutions for these patients‟ extended problems. By maintaining or restoring these patients‟ functional and aesthetic oral-dental healt...

Diagnosis is a key aspect in endodontic treatment, in a decade where invasive interventions are misapprehended as social tendency instead of medical necessity. All diagnostic facets should be considered before intending the operative phase. Intraoral endodontic radiology-based diagnosis has been shown to be limited. Periapical X-ray is the most used endodontic imaging, yet it does not provide high accuracy. Traditionally, dentists have been trained to diagnose a cyst by certain aspects (size, shape and appearance); hence, an assumption that teeth are affected by “periapical cyst” were subjected to unnecessary extraction or apicoectomy. The aim of this systematic review is to critically appraise the publications that relate the histological diagnosis of a periapical lesion (considered the gold standard) to intraoral X-ray investigation. Ovid Medline, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Mendeley and Scopus were searched for English-language studies comparing periapical diagnosis obtained by using ...

The aim of this general article is to present an overview of the current knowledge about composition and structural changes and also about specific biomechanical alterations related to vitality loss or endodontic therapy. For a long time, these issues have been controversially approached from a clinical standpoint and are therefore still confusing for many practitioners. Vitality loss or endodontic procedures seem to induce only negligible changes in hard dental tissue moisture. Physico-chemical properties of dentin can be modified by some of the endodontic chemical products used for chemo-mechanical debridement. On the other hand, tooth biomechanical behavior is affected, since tooth strength is reduced proportionally to coronal tissue loss, due to either pre-existent carious/non-carious lesions or cavity acces preparation, besides restorative procedures. The related literature shows the lack of accepted clinical standards and consensus regarding the optimal way of approaching the specific tooth biomechanics following endodontic therapy.

Restoring teeth with second class cavities is a challenge in dentistry. Both the carious process and the preparation of the cavity for the dental restoration reduces the tooth resistance to the masticatory forces. It has been shown that modern aesthetic materials using an adhesive system improve the stress resistance of the restored teeth. There is a series of studies that attempted to determine the type of optimal material that would provide increased resistance to occlusal demands. In the present study we tried to determine the fracture resistance of molars with second class cavities restored with different categories of aesthetic materials. Thus, forty intact molars were divided into five groups of 8 teeth, MOD cavities were prepared and the teeth were restored with three types of materials: nanofilled composite, mycrohibrid composite and ormocer. The teeth of the first group were left unprepared, and those belonging to the second group were subjected to the preparation of MOD ca...

Nevertheless, prevention of infectious risk in dental technology by decontaminating and disinfecting impressions, moulds, but also intermediate or completed prosthetic pieces, is hindered nowadays by a relatively high percentage of dental technicians. Therefore, the following material is meant to be an attempt to bring forward solid arguments regarding the ever present danger of the disease concerning the specialised personnel working in dental technology laboratories, especially due to handling dental impressions. 3 Corresponding author: Mihai Burlibașa, B-dul. In the dental office, allergic manifestations can take all forms of immune reactions and are the result of human response to contact with antigens, which are represented by a diverse group of substances, medicine occupying a conspicuous role among them. In the therapeutic arsenal of the physician, there are a number of medicinal substances and materials that may be responsible for triggering allergic reactions: antibiotics, anesthetics, analgesics, iodine substances, acrylic or other synthetic materials etc. On the other hand, the dentist is often faced with oral manifestations of immunological disorders, which may require specific therapeutic conduct and may often become a victim of allergic reactions himself to the different substances he handles. The most frequently encountered type allergic reactions are: skin rash, itching, bronchospasm and less often anaphylactic shock, the most dramatic allergic phenomena encountered in the practice of dentistry.(3) Their incidence is difficu...

Choosing and arranging the adequate teeth in complete dentures is extremely important from an aesthetic point of view. In most of the cases, the decision is purely subjective (considering only the patient's desire) but can be strongly influenced by the dentist. Thus, the "golden proportion" can eliminate many sources of errors during dental treatment and at the same time, it offers the patients a natural smile.

The aim of the paper is to highlight the clinical changes (mainly mycoses) in the tongue in patients with general conditions as well as the possible etiopathogenic mechanisms and the correlation between them and local and general risk factors. The method is represented by a rigorous study conducted on 500 patients of both genders between 2010 and 2013. General conditions as well as primary or associated lingual lesions were clinically detected in 221 patients. The results indicated a high rate of primary or associated glossitis as well as a significant number of other types of lingual disorders. The data of the study are presented in graphs and tables. The important conclusion of the paper is the high rate of primary or associated fungal glossitis in patients with a history of chronic disease, as well as the existence of comorbidity-related risk factors and aggravating local-regional factors. The rate of occurrence of other types of glossitis is significantly lower. Cuvinte cheie: a...

Dental biofilm-induced gingivitis is extremely common in children and adolescents and it affects the majority of children over 7 years old. It is characterised by inflammation, consisting in changes of colour, size, consistency and texture. Although most of the times gingivitis does not progress into periodontitis, it is important to diagnose and properly treat this disease, as gingivitis precedes periodontitis. The present paper aims to review the main findings of microbial etiology and epidemiology of dental biofilm-induced gingivitis mediated by local risk factors, as well as the role of oral hygiene in preventing bacterial colonization.

Dead tracts are dentin areas characterized by degenerated odontoblastic processes; may result from injury caused by caries, attrition, erosion, or cavity preparation. Odontoblasts can also form tertiary dentin, as a response to injury, in association with caries, trauma, or restorative procedures. Generally, this dentin is less organized than primary and secondary dentin and mostly localized to the site of injury. The reactive dentin formation that lays under caries, the pulp displays chronic inflammation and tertiary dentinogenesis takes place on the inner walls of the pulp space, in the region of the dentinal tubules associated with the base of the carious lesion. Higher-power photomicrograph of tertiary dentin shown in a primary dentin, first period of tertiary dentin formation, second period of tertiary dentin formation. Today, thanks to the progress of the research on stem cells and biomaterials, it is possible to develop new kinds of therapies in the field of dentistry. These therapies are called biotherapies. The recently highlighted stem cells within the different pulp organ tissues and especially those in the dental pulp have made possible the development of new therapeutic possibilities, for treating dental pulp injuries. In the case of moderate pulpal lesions, it has become possible to stimulate the persistent pulpal stem cell reservoir with the help of biomolecules. In the case of more severe lesions, which require a total removal of pulpal tissue, a cellular therapy should be considered. The objective of this paper is to present these future therapeutic methods. The results of the research conducted on the dental pulp stem cells, combined with the overall progress of stem cell research, as well as that of tissue engineering, will allow the development of therapeutic alternatives to the curr...

After the usual treatment of simple caries, an unpleasant complication occurs quite often, namely postoperative hypersensitivity. The aim of the paper is to draw attention to this complication that is rather frequent yet little known by the dental practitioner. There are a lot of clinical manifestations of this disorder that has different etiological factors and production mechanisms. The method consists of the examination of 104 patients of both sexes in the 23-40 age bracket, who came to "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest to have their simple caries treated, and who were monitored for a period of 3 months after the treatment. We studied only the occlusal carious lesions in the molars that were restored using composite materials. The examination of patients was performed using a questionnaire that included a clinical examination, the patient's subjective account regarding the presence of postoperative pain, the depth and extent of the prep...

Cleaning and shaping of the root canal, followed by a complete seal are an important steps in root canal treatment. The aim of this study was a comparative evaluation of biocompatibility of some endodontic root-end filling materials on cultures of primary human osteoblasts (OBL) and dental follicle derived adult mesenchymal stem cells (DF MSCs). The differentiation process was evaluated with alamar blue viability assay and by immunocytochemical staining for bone markers (osteopontin, alkaline phosphates). The samples were examined using a Zeiss Axiovert microscope by reversed phase fluorescence and image capture was performed using a MRC camera. Tested materials proved to develop a degree of toxicity that occurs especially when osteoblasts after 2 weeks, with higher extent for AH Plus material. A very good biocompatibility with stem cells was observed for Acroseal especially after 9 days of cultivation, with an increased proliferation rate of DF MSCs.

This paper aims to highlight the role the priests, hermits and medical monks played in dental treatments over the centuries. It started with the pagan mysticism, when dental treatments were performed by wizards or shamans, the so called „healer heroes‟, who were regarded by their peers as superior beings, gifted with the divine ability to be an mediator between the man possessed by an evil spirit and a kind divinity able to offer – if begged by use of magical gestures and right words – the long sought healing. The priests or the leaders of human communities appealed to different healing gods, each nation having their own favourite deity. With the spreading of Christianity throughout Europe, the true Christian priests appeared. These were monks dedicated to healing people, who through their dedication helped many people in suffering according to their power and knowledge and who also saved many valuable historical manuscripts from destruction. In the Christian West after the year 100...

Cherubism is a familial benign fibro-osseous disease of the jaws. On radiography, the lesions exhibit bilateral multinuclear radiolucent areas. Histopathology reveals multinucleated giant cells in the background of proliferating fibrous connective tissue. Mutations in the SH3BP2 gene are identified as the cause of cherubism. A 12-year-old girl with prominence of the lower face was investigated. Her chief complaint was her facial appearance with asymmetrical swelling of the cheeks. Clinical and radiographic examinations, and biopsy, biochemical analysis and genetic investigations were performed.

Introduction. Any dental treatment has a traumatic character, even for clinically healthy patients, and especially for sensitive patients or the ones in special conditions (children, the elderly, pregnant women). Therefore, risk assessment in patients with dental disorders is very important in the usual practice in the dental office. The purpose of our paper is to present the results of a study conducted by us to assess the overall risk before, during or after a common dental treatment, which is rather difficult, considering the multitude of factors involved. The material was represented by a cohort of 200 patients, 111 women and 89 men, aged between 20 and 60 plus, clinically and anamnestically assessed. 157 of them were considered clinically healthy and 43 had a pathological personal history. Their behaviour in the dental office was observed during the study and the results showed a total of 18 (9%) minor accidents, different in manifestation and severity, during the common dental...

After insertion of the dental implants, they can be subsequently prosthetically restored through a wide range of implant-supported prosthetic restorations. In this material, we tried to highlight some particular aspects from the point of view of the laboratory stages of dental technique, which intervene in the technological flow of making implant-supported prosthetic restorations from ceramic masses on Zirconia structure.

Post and core devices are elements that contribute to the complete restoration of the coronary abutment, over which the final prosthetic restoration will be created. Their role is to retain the coronary portion of the restoration and to protect the remaining coronary structures. The retention function is dictated by the major indication of the method, massive coronary destruction that does not provide conditions for coronary aggregation of the restoration. Thus, this material is approaching two unique methods of making post and core devices totally metallic and/or hybrid (metal + totally ceramic component), using both classical technology, modern technologies, but also combinations of them.

Several methods and materials are used in modern restorative dentistry for anterior dental lesions treatment. The desired aesthetic outcome can be obtained only with the correct treatment method correlated to case particularities. Sometimes, subjective and unrealistic approaches lead immediately or in time to undesirable dental restorations. The aim of the present paper is to evaluate the statistic distribution of aesthetic anterior dysfunctions detected on 425 patients from both genders that had restorative treatment during a period of 10 years. For each patient, there has been conducted an initial clinical examination and a photographic documentation was made. Also, each patient was asked to submit a questionnaire regarding his dental history. The results of the study represented the foundation for the discussions regarding the causes that led to aesthetic dysfunctions. The conclusions indicated that all errors that conducted to an initial failure of treatment are only connected w...

Sedentary behavior, both professional, occupational, and leisure, recreational, is one of the major risk factors for cardio-metabolic health and premature mortality. But we find this sedentary behavior in many of the existing professional activities in 2021, among which are the professional activities with a medical profile in the field of dentistry: specific activities of the dental office (and here we discuss dentists and dental nurses) and activities specific to the dental technique laboratory (in this case, we are talking about dental technicians).

The goal of this general article is to present a survey of the current knowledge about the clinical approach of restoring endodontically treated teeth. The best way to restore teeth after root canal treatment has long been and still is a controversial subject of debate to this day. The clinical approach of restoring endodontically treated teeth needs taking into consideration several issues: aims of coronal restoration, criteria for establishing the various modalities of coronal restoration, clinical solutions of restoring teeth after endodontic treatment, guidelines regarding restorative materials and techniques, possibilities and limits of restoration using direct adhesive materials and techniques. The aims of coronal restoration of endodontically treated teeth are generally considered to be the following ones: to prevent recontamination of the root canal system and/or periapical space, to replace missing hard dental tissues and to restore coronal morphology and functions, to prov...

Purpose of the study: the authors address the specific pathology of oral mucosa in the elderly patients, mainly because in dentistry, the diagnosis of these disorders involves special therapeutic approaches. Study material and method: a clinical-statistical study was performed on a group of 100 patients of both sexes, aged between 55 and 75 years old, aiming at detecting oral mucosal lesions, with or without the presence of several simultaneous comorbidites. The results of the examined patients with impaired oral mucosa were submitted to statistical analysis, revealing the presence of 32 patients with mucosal lesions, 16 women and 16 men. The analysis of the lesion types revealed the diversity of the discovered lesion forms, in direct relation with age and associated risk factors which occurred more frequently in the patients over the age of 55. In conclusion, oral mucosal lesions should be considered as complex, in the context of the biological age of the patient, but also in the p...
