Carmelo Vigna

It is argued that something can only be an object of faith if it is stable. But something is stable either because it is announced as such to reason or because reason shows it to be such. In both cases, the knowledge that we have of it comes before the faith that we can have of it, precisely because faith, in the last analysis, implies the stability of the object and only adds the stability of the relationship with it. In the case of theological faith, the firm, i.e. stable conviction, of the existence of God is the natural and inevitable presupposition of faith in the revelation of God to us in his Christ. It is the reason of faith.

The essay focuses on the principle of self-determination as distinct from the principle of autonomy. The latter, indeed, has to be considered as a premise to self-determination. Both concepts are connected to the essence of the individual, to the idea of human being. The perspective of philosophical reflections is fundamental to the understanding of the respective relationships between these two concepts.
