This study examined how students' knowledge of their learning styles affected their anxiety and clinical performance. In a graduate program of nurse anesthesiology with a sample size of 43 students, results indicated that, over time, students who were aware of their learning styles demonstrated less anxiety than those who were not. Knowledge of learning styles also improved clinical performance in the cognitive and affective domains. Recommendations for schools of nurse anesthesiology are discussed.

This study was an attempt to develop an easily coded, research-oriented instrument to assess teacher effectiveness in the class- room. A 35-item Likert format scale was developed which included three subscales of teacher effectiveness: classroom management, instruction, and classroom climate. The results of the study indicated that the Virgilio Teacher Behavior Inventory (VTBI) is a reliable and valid instrument which can be administered with confidence either in elementary or junior high schools. Instrument development included the generation of an initial pool of 80 items which was refined during pilot testing to a final 35-item version. Content validity of the VTBI was indicated by an assessment of a panel of judges. Estimates of internal consistency (coefficient alpha) were .96 for the total inventory and .88, .96, and .85 for the classroom management, instruction, and classroom climate subscales, respectively. The relationship between the VTBI and a time-on-task measure ( r = .64, p < .0001) provided an indication of concurrent validity. A five-factor solution consistent with the theoretical structure of the VTBI was obtained tentatively defining one classroom management, two instruction, and two classroom climate dimensions.

ABSTRACT It is argued that school effectiveness research has made three considerable contributions: (1)The setting up of a field which exhibits the characteristics of mature normal science; (2) The generation of a considerable volume of research findings on numerous important topics; (3) The combatting of societal and professional pessimism concerning the prospects of educational advance. It is argued that the recent criticisms by those such as Thrupp, Slee and Weiner are misplaced, and that the field is reflexively critiquing itself to a high degree. It is concluded that school effectiveness researchers are likely to generate more purposive social and educational change than their critics.

This chapter briefly summarizes some of the common findings in and some of the major criticisms of school effectiveness research. Eleven ‘cutting edge’ areas are identified where it is argued that the future of the discipline lies in terms of a research agenda to continue disciplinary advance. These areas are: the need to use multiple outcome measures; the need to use the third, relational dimension of school; the need to expand the study of context variables; the need to analyze range within schools and classrooms; the need to study the possibly additive nature of school and family effects; the need to explore the interface between levels of schooling; the need to study naturally occurring experiments; the need to expand variation at the school level; the need to study school failure or dysfunctionality; the need to use multilevel structural models, the need to recognize the salience of issues concerning curriculum and assessment.

ABSTRACT Writing about the “legacy” of any field of research is a daunting task. This is especially the case for “school effectiveness research,” which has a complex (and sometimes controversial) history. What does “legacy” in this context mean? A legacy is something that is handed down from a previous generation or time to the current generation or time. In academic research, a legacy may be defined as that which is handed down from a preceding group of scholars, including the existing body of knowledge that is relevant and continues to be used.
Film and video techniques are examined through the insights of cognitive psychology and an experimental paradigm adapted from studies of verbal behavior.

Publisher Summary The field of school effects research (SER) has generated sufficient research evidence that it may be subdivided into subtopics of special interest. One major subtopic that Good and Brophy listed as a limitation of extant SER, is the context of school effects. This chapter describes the history of the study of context factors in SER, reviews methodological issues within context studies, and discusses results from the studies conducted of three major contextual variables—SES of students, grade level configuration, and urbanicity of school— and summarizes implications of these results for theory development and the school improvement process. It discusses the importance of the context variable, the study of which can generate much more sophisticated explanations for the processes responsible for school effectiveness and ineffectiveness, generated from a study of the interaction of school with context. Contextual variation is explained as covering the socio-economic status of catchment areas, the grade level of the school, and urban/rural features.
