During the last decades, many studies have used network analysis or space syntax approach in a diachronic perspective, either to observe the interdependence between network configurations and land-use, or to explore the link between network configurations and known urban phenomena, such as densification, dispersal or expansion. These researches often focus on one single transformation rather than on the long time evolution of networks. In this work, we will explore the evolution of the street network of Paris, between 1300 and 1871, and link this evolution to all the transformations that occurred in the city during this period. The general question we are trying to address is what is the impact of urban transformations on the form (the morphology) of streets networks? Our methodology is the following; we first describe the history of the city, by focusing on moments that have had an impac...

An understanding of their structure is fundamental when it comes to evaluating and improving territorial accessibility. This study is designed to provide insight into the progressive structuring of territorial patterns by analyzing the evolution of road networks. Studying road network morphogenesis requires geohistorical data, provided here by historical maps from which earlier road networks can be digitized. A hypergraph is constructed from these networks by combining road segments into “ways” on the basis of a method for defining the continuity of road segments. Next, indicators are computed for these ways based on topological and geometrical features. The road patterns of three cities in the Burgundy Franche-Comte region of France (Dijon, Besançon, and Pontarlier) at three historical periods (the 18th, 19th, and twentieth centuries) are then analyzed. In this manner, the...

They arise from a set of interactions and components so diverse that is almost impossible to describe them exhaustively. Amid this diversity, we chose an object which orchestrates the development and use of an urban area : the road network. Following the established work on space syntax, we represent road networks as graphs. From this symbolic representation we can build a geographical object called the way. The way is defined by local rules independently from the direction in which the network is read. This complex object, and several indicators leaned upon it, allows us to carry out deep analysis of spatial networks, independent from their borders. With this methodology, we demonstrate how different road graphs, from various places in the world, show similar properties. We show how such analysis, based on the topological and topographical properties of their road networks, allows us to trace back some aspects of the historical ...
