The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of 5% sodium hypochlorite solution for removal of stains caused by dental fluorosis in young patients. A clinical trial involved 33 patients with diffuse opacities on the enamel surfaces of maxillary incisors due to effects of dental fluorosis. The protocol of treatment 3 steps:(1) cleaning and enamel etching with 37% phosphoric acid in order to eliminate the layer that covers the fluorotic enamel surface and allow better penetration of the bleaching agent,(2) application of 5% sodium hypochlorite to remove stains caused by organic material, and (3) filling the opened microcavities with a light-cured, composite surface sealant to prevent restaining. The whiteness of the enamel lesions before and after treatment were expressed in L*, a*, and b* color space measurements using a Minolta Chroma Meter CR300. Analysis of parameters of ¢E (L*, a*, b*) showed that changes were observed in the L* (brightness) and a* (redness),...

Among the aeroallergens associated to asthma and allergic rhinitis, the fungi are a common cause of diagnostic and therapeutic problems. The wide variety and distribution of fungal species and the complex characterization of their allergenicity, is a complex item. The fungus extracts used to diagnose and treat sensitizations are frequently non effective, and different varieties of extracts are globally distributed. The standardization of commercial fungi extracts results extremely important as diagnostic procedure as well as to decide an efficacious and safe immunotherapy. This paper reviews important methodological steps to the standardization of fungi extracts, and finally the clinical use of these extracts.

The polysaccharidic integument surrounding growing cells of attenuated Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, Connaught substrain, can be removed with non-specific proteases. After 5 weeks incubation at 37 degrees C in Middlebrook 7H-9 medium, the collected cells were incubated with pronase and the integument and cells separated by centrifugation in a Ficoll-Histopaque preparation. After washing and drying, the detached integument accounted for 65% w/w of the original dried cell mass. Like the original cellular material, the detached integument manifested antineoplastic activity against a murine sarcoma model in vivo. Solubilization of the otherwise insoluble integument by boiling in water or by digestion in 8 M urea significantly enhanced activity of the integument itself, by 125 and 1,100 times, respectively. Integument extracts were shown to contain mainly glucose, with smaller quantities of other sugars, consistent with the presence in BCG of high molecular ...

ABSTRACT This paper evaluates, under a descriptive approach if, by means of their loan guarantee programs, the Mexican government-owned financial institutions have succeeded in promoting the private banks credit supply to targeted segments of private businesses; fostered the granting of loans that help the competitiveness of private businesses, and, improved the credit terms of the private bank loans to the targeted population. Our database comprises over 23 million loan records. Results point to mixed indications on the aforementioned goals achievement.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the associations of markers of insulin resistance with cardiovascular disease risk factors and inflammation in young, normal-weight, Hispanic women. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Seventy-one normal-weight (BMI <25 kg/m2) Hispanic women (age, 20–39 years) participated in a fasting blood draw for glucose, insulin, lipids, and inflammatory markers; a glucose tolerance test; anthropometric and blood pressure measurements; body composition by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry; and measurements of cardiorespiratory fitness via Vo2max and daily physical activity by accelerometer. RESULTS Six percent of participants had impaired fasting glucose, 14% had impaired glucose tolerance, and 48% had at least one cardiovascular disease risk factor. Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and fasting insulin were positively correlated with glucose, triglycerides, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure, and were negatively correlated with a...
