So called "Western roman", focused on the period of the civil wars during the French revolution between the republicans and the royalists (war of Vendée and "Chouannerie") represents an important phenomena of the French historical novel in the 19th century. It's connected with the names of such authors like Victor Hugo or Honoré de Balzac. The article deals with the motifs of cruelty and bestiality, typical for this type of literature. Firstly, the article will point to the origin of this theme in the Vendée literature, connected with the extremely violent character of the civil war. Afterwards, the article will expose some typical forms of this theme: description of terrors and brutality, figures of Chouans presented as savages and characters of mans-monsters. Finally, we will talk about a connection between the theme of the violence and the ideological dimension of the Western roman.

This work analyses the french collection of Aesopic fables written by Marie de France, the author living in the England at the end of the 12th century. The present work shows how is this texte, based on the older model, influenced by the mediaval reality. This medieval dimension dominates in three degrees: in the texte itself which is full of references to the contemporary reality, in the moral values which are in the accordance with the feudal conception of society and in the connection of the texte with the other litterary genres of the 12th century.

This Bachelor's diploma thesis deals with the analysis of writings of Francois Villon and their relation with the mentality of the late Middle Ages. The thesis is based on the poetry of Villon and confronts it with the specialized litterature.Firstly the work describes the life of the poet and his epoch (including the cultural and mental context). Then the thesis characterizes particulars sections of Villon's poetry. The task of the final chapter of the thesis is to analyse the elements of the medieval mentality in Villon's poetry and to show his poetical innovation in the thematic aspect of his work. For this analysis, I chose four elements which are essential for the poetry of Francois Villon as well as for the mentality of his time.
