This study suggests that conceptual summarizing of multiple sources is key to deep learning and useful to language learning strategies. The participants of this study were 68 students from three classes studying in upper intermediate reading course at English Department of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya in Palembang. The t test indicated that the students who received strategic summarizing intervention in this study received significantly higher marks after eight reading and summarizing measures using computer based concept map. Collected data from questionnaire and focus group discussion showed that during summarizing from multiple sources using computer-based concept map the students employed prereading, conceptual reading and summarizing strategies. We could note the student activities which stressed the various aspects of conceptual learning. It is suggested that conceptual summarizing of multiple sources using computer-based concept map is used in English reading because it all...

This paper describes the Natural Resouce Damage Assessment Model for Coastal and Marine Environments (NRDAM/CME) developed by the authors for the U.S. Department of the Interior. The NRDAM/CME is to be used for type A, simplified assessments of damages to natural resources in coastal and marine environments under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act of 1980. Given limited information supplied by an authorized official after a discharge or release covered by the act, the model simulates the physical fates, biological effects, and economic damages resulting from the incident.

This article describes a hand-operated "weir" skimmer for recovering oil spillage in small areas or where access is difficult. The skimmer, several of which have been made, has been developed in parallel with the shallow-water oil-collection ship MPOSS, a vessel sponsored by German Federal Republic's Research and Technology Ministry. The skimmer is a small buoyant device measuring 920 by 740 mm, by 400 mm high, weighing about 28 kg, and intended for one-person operation it has a float-controlled skimming flap (the "weir" principle) that is easily adjusted for depths from 2 to 30 mm. The skimmer is used in conjunction with a separate suction pump; oil skimmed by the flap is collected in a sump, from which it is pumped away through a suction tube that can be extended to 6 m; skimming output is up to 15 cum/hr. The suction tube also serves for handling the skimmer, which the operator can push along by means of the tube or can hold stationary in, e.g., flowing wa...

Morphological characteristics, such as the size, shape, color, and seed surface structures, were analyzed using stereo and scanning electron microscopes. Testa layer structures including the outer and inner testae, phytomelan layer structure and thickness, and seed endosperm cell features were studied. Differences in the seed, raphe size, seed surface patterns, inner testa features, and phytomelan layer thickness were observed at an interspecific level. The results revealed differences in the seed morphology and anatomy with a few exceptions.Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit of İstanbul University (Project Number: 13169

A±rmative action in college admissions creates diversity by replacing marginal majority applicants with marginal minority applicants. Majority citizens' preferences over the level of di- versity as well as the means of achieving it depend on their competitive positions in admissions. In a simple model of college admissions, we show that higher-ability majority citizens prefer a more diverse student body and and are more likely to favor race-conscious admissions rules than lower-ability citizens. Our model explains, ¯rst, the recent trend in American colleges and uni- versities of replacing race-conscious admissions policies with race-neutral ones that de-emphasize standardized-test scores and, second, why majority voters support banning a±rmative action even though it does not signicantly improve their admissions prospects.

Nanotechnology has the potential to introduce revolutionary change in the energy industries such as exploration, development and production. Nanotechnology can revolutionalise the additive properties by tuning particle characteristics to meet certain environmental, operational and technical requirements. Nanotechnology produces nanomaterials that are ultra fines in nature, usually smaller than ordinary micro particles and thus has very high specific surface area with enormous area of interactions. Recent research has indicated that nanomaterials have unique properties for a broad range of applications in the field of oilfield chemistry, where fluid loss control, borehole stability, cementing quality of a well, remediation of damaged reservoirs, hydrocarbon recovery efficiency, oilfield wastewater treatment are of interest. This paper presents an extensive literature review of assessing the applications of nanotechnology and nanomaterials in the field of oilfield chemistry, investigating the existing problems in the application of nanomaterials in oilfield chemistry, and evaluating the potential technical and economic benefits that nanotechnology and nanomaterials might provide to petroleum development and production.

This article examines public attitudes toward university admissions rules by focusing on the imposition of the costs of racial diversity across majority citizens. High-income majority citizens, who tend to have better academic qualifications, favor more diversity under affirmative action, which imposes its costs on marginal majority candidates. Low-income majority citizens prefer less diversity under affirmative action and would rather achieve

PURPOSE Exercise improves functional outcome post-stroke, but how long patients with differing severity spend undertaking active exercise within physiotherapy sessions is unknown. We aimed to investigate if stroke severity is associated with time undertaking active exercise in physiotherapy sessions, and if any differences between planned and actual physiotherapy session length existed. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective observational study of 107 stroke rehabilitation sessions in a UK acute stroke unit. Data recorded included patient demographics (age, gender, time post-stroke and Barthel Index score) and session attributes (planned and actual session length, time undertaking active exercise, grade of treating therapist). RESULTS There was a significant negative association between increasing stroke severity and percentage of time undertaking active exercise in physiotherapy sessions (p < 0.001). No other observed factors were associated with time undertaking active exercise. Mean session length across all levels of stroke severity was 32 min (SD 9.26) which was significantly less than planned (p < 0.05). There was no difference in mean session length or between planned and actual physiotherapy session length between patients of differing severity. CONCLUSIONS Patients with greater stroke severity participate in less active exercise in physiotherapy sessions than those with lesser stroke severity. Reasons for this disparity warrant further investigation.Implications for rehabilitationStroke patients with higher levels of severity engage in less active exercise during rehabilitation.A discrepancy exists between patients' planned physiotherapy session lengths and actual session lengths during stroke rehabilitation.Physiotherapists should be mindful in how to adapt their sessions (particularly with severe stroke patients) to maximise the amount of activity they undertake.Physiotherapists should be flexible in their delivery of rehabilitation to ensure that the length of patient sessions reflect patients' needs.
