Background: Major depressive disorder is a difficult-to-treat psychological disorder. Approximately 30% of patients with major depressive disorder do not respond to conventional therapies; thus, the efficacy of alternative therapies for treating major depressive disorder, such as neurofeedback, a non-invasive neuromodulation method used in the treatment of psychiatric diseases, must be investigated. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of neurofeedback in minimizing and treating major depressive disorder and its application as a substitute to or an adjuvant with conventional therapies. Methods: We searched for experimental studies published between 1962-2021 in Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases and identified 1,487 studies, among which 13 met the inclusion exclusion criteria. Results: We noted that not all patients responded to neurofeedback. Based on depression scales, major depressive disorder significantly improved in response to neurofeedback only in a few individuals. Additionally, the number of training sessions did not influence the results. Conclusion: Neurofeedback can reduce depression symptoms in patients; however, not all patients respond to the treatment. Therefore, further studies must be conducted to validate the effectiveness of neurofeedback in treating major depressive disorder.

Objective: To investigate the association between APOE4 and BCHE-K as a risk factor for AD. Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus on August 8, 2021 for studies that analyzed the association of APOE4 and BCHE-K with AD. The random effect model was performed in meta-analysis according to age group. A chi-square was performed with the meta-analysis data to verify if the effect found is not associated only with the E4 allele. Results: Twenty-one studies with 6,853 subjects (3,528 AD and 3,325 Controls) were included in the meta-analysis. The quality of the evidence is moderate. There is a positive E4-K association for subjects with AD as shown by the odds ratio of 3.43. The chi-square meta test, which measures the probability that the E4-K association is due to chance, has an odds rat...

Background The preventive role of muscular strength on diminishing neuroinflammation is yet unknown. In this study, the role of the prophylactic muscular strength exercise was investigated in order to verify whether it would diminish cognitive alterations and modify the antioxidant intracellular scenery in an animal neuroinflammatory model in of the CA1 region of the hippocampus. Methods The animals received muscular strength training (SE) three times a week for eight weeks. Subsequently, the stereotaxic surgery was performed with an intra-hippocampal infusion of either saline solution (SAL) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Next, we performed the behavioral tests: object recognition and social recognition. Then, the animals were euthanized, and their hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were collected. In another moment, we performed the dosage of the antioxidant activity and histological analysis. Results The results showed that the muscular strength exercises could show a beneficial prop...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects a large portion of the elderly worldwide and is the most common dementia in this population. AD is usually accompanied by concurrent comorbidities leading to the simultaneous use of several drugs to improve the quality of life, which renders AD patients vulnerable to drug interactions and adverse reactions. This study assessed the frequency of polypharmacy based on comorbidities in AD patients from the city of Guarapuava, Parana, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study in non-institutionalized and volunteer AD patients. The Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale was applied to classify the AD stage and a socio-economic survey was used to identify possible comorbidities and medications taken. Medications were evaluated according to the Kussano’s criteria (2010) to identify polypharmacy. The incidence of polypharmacy was high (up to 65.9%, n = 27); hypertension was the most frequent comorbidity (58.54%, n = 24). AD patients inappropriately take drugs...

Curcumin is a natural compound known for hepatic and nephroprotective actions, however, there is little research related to its possible side effects. The research aimed to study hematological, biochemical parameters and histopathology of hepatic and renal tissues to evaluate the effects of curcumin toxicity in male rats. A group of Wistar male rats (n = 10) was orally treated for five days with 100 mg/kg of curcumin diluted in vegetable oil, and the other group (n=10) was treated with vegetable oil (control). Statistical difference was observed in the levels of creatinine, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and red blood cells count between the control and curcumin treated group. However, despite these differences, the values observed were within the normal ranges for of Wistar male rats. Histopathological alterations were not observed. Therefore, our results show that curcumin is relatively non-toxic and, because of its demonstrated pharmacological effects, it can be developed as a promising...

The entorhinal cortex is perhaps the area of the brain in which neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques are first detectable in old age with or without mild cognitive impairment, and very particularly in Alzheimer's disease. It plays a key role in memory formation, retrieval, and extinction, as part of circuits that include the hippocampus, the amygdaloid nucleus, and several regions of the neocortex, in particular of the prefrontal cortex. Lesions or biochemical impairments of the entorhinal cortex hinder extinction. Microinfusion experiments have shown that glutamate NMDA receptors, calcium and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II, and protein synthesis in the entorhinal cortex are involved in and required for extinction. Aging also hinders extinction; it is possible that its effect may be in part mediated by the entorhinal cortex.

The effects of the administration of monosialoganglioside (GM1) on methylmalonic acid (MMA)-induced convulsions, production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and on the striatal content of ascorbic acid and total non-protein thiol (SH) groups were evaluated in adult male rats. Animals received two intraperitoneal injections of GM1 (50 mg/kg) or saline (0.85% NaCl) spaced 24h apart. Thirty minutes after the second GM1 or saline injection, L-MMA (6 micromol) or NaCl (9 micromol) was injected into the right striatum and the animals were observed for the appearance of convulsions for 15 min. The animals were sacrificed and their striatal content of ascorbic acid, SH groups and TBARS was measured. The effect of GM1 on MMA-induced TBARS production in striatal homogenates was also evaluated in vitro.MMA injection caused convulsions (Sal-MMA: 9.8+/-1.4 episodes, which lasted 271+/-48 s) and increased the striatal content of TBARS (Sal-MMA: 149.0+/-11.5 nmol MDA/g tissue), but did not alter total striatal SH or ascorbic acid contents. GM1 pretreatment decreased MMA-induced convulsions (GM1-MMA: 6.3+/-2.0 episodes, which lasted 115.1+/-42.2s) and TBARS increase (GM1-MMA: 102.4+/-19.5 nmol MDA/g tissue). GM1 pretreatment increased ascorbic acid content of the striata (saline-pretreated: 1514+/-75.9; GM1-pretreated: 1878.6+/-102.8 microg ascorbic acid/mg tissue). MMA increased TBARS production in vitro, and GM1 had no effect on such MMA-induced effect. This study provides evidence that GM1 increases striatal ascorbic acid content and decreases MMA-induced neurotoxicity assessed by behavioral and neurochemical parameters.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by disorders that can impair the nutrition of the patient and lead to weight loss and nutritional deficits during the course of the disease. The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional status and food intake of Brazilian patients with Alzheimer's disease at 3 different stages of the disease. The sample consisted of 30 subjects of both genders, mean age 77 years, with probable AD. Subjects were assessed by collecting anthropometric data, the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), serum albumin content, Mini Mental State Examination and 24-hour records of food and drink. Although a steady decrease in average weight was observed as the disease progressed (CDR1: 70.8±15.9 kg; CDR2: 61.4±15.7 kg; CDR3: 56.1± 8.4 kg), the differences were not significant. MNA and serum albumin both fell during the progression of the disease (p = 0.042; p = 0.047, respectively) and, at the severe stage, half the patients were found to be undernourished ...

Encoding for several memory types requires neural changes and the activity of distinct regions across the brain. These areas receive broad projections originating in nuclei located in the brainstem which are capable of modulating the activity of a particular area. The histaminergic system is one of the major modulatory systems, and it regulates basic homeostatic and higher functions including arousal, circadian, and feeding rhythms, and cognition. There is now evidence that histamine can modulate learning in different types of behavioral tasks, but the exact course of modulation and its mechanisms are controversial. In the present paper we review the involvement of the histaminergic system and the effects histaminergic recepto...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive impairment and progressive memory loss and drug treatments have limited efficacy. Thus, non-pharmacological interventions, such as music therapy, have shown to be promising as supporting pharmacological treatment and, therefore, may arouse commercial interest regarding the development of this type of product. Thus, this study aims to carry out a patentometric survey on patent registrations with music therapy in the treatment of AD. A systematic search was carried out from 2000 to 2020 on the Orbti-Questel website, searching for documents referring to music therapies in AD. The terms “Alzheimer music methodology active therapy” and “Alzheimer music methodology passive therapy” were used. After searching, reading, and excluding duplicate results, we found four patent families referring to music therapy in AD and all were selected as a result, which was considered little compared to the number of studies published on the subject.

Although malnutrition and risk of falls in the elderly have increased in recent years, uncertainties exist as to whether these conditions are associated after controlling for sociodemographic variables, body composition, metabolic condition, and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This study aimed to analyze the association between nutritional status and risk of fall in the elderly population. Participants were matched by gender and age, after they had been grouped on the basis of diagnosis of AD. The risk of falls, nutritional status, and mental status were assessed using the Downton Fall Risk Score (FRS), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and Mini Mental State Evaluation (MMSE), respectively. Logistic regression models adjusted for the main confounders were used in the analyses. Among the 68 elderly individuals studied, participants who were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition were more likely to fall (odds ratio = 8.29; 95% confidence interval = 1.49-46.04) than those with normal nutr...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative pathology that affects elderly people all over the world. Several studies have demonstrated that oxidative stress is an aggravating factor for AD development and progression. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the activity of two oxidative stress markers, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase (δ-ALA-D), as well as correlate them with blood metal levels and AD progression. For this purpose, 88 elderly individuals were divided in two groups: AD group (34 patients diagnosed with AD) and control group (34 subjects paired by age with the AD group). The Mini-Mental State Examination and the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) were used as tools to classify the AD progression. GPx and δ-ALA-D activities were measured in all subjects through blood tests. Both enzymes' activities were decreased in AD patients when compared to the age-matched control group, regardless of the CDR. Moreover, GPx activity was positi...

Introduction: Dementia is a common health problem in elderly people, Alzheimer disease (AD) being the most prevalent. AD can be considered as a cause of death and must be registered on the death certificate of the patients. However, most of the time, the main cause of death registered is not related to AD, but as an underlying or contributing cause. For example, individuals who have AD and die from myocardium infarction. This study aimed to analyze if nutritional status was associated with survival and mortality for AD, and if AD was reported as actual cause of death on the death certificate Methods: The study was carried out as a cross-sectional study with elderly citizens of the community registered in the National Health System (SUS), with cognitive, nutritional, biochemical and hematological evaluations of 30 AD patients in Guarapuava, Paraná state, Brazil. Results: Significant differences were not observed between live and dead patients when evaluated considering the methods ap...

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, with a multifactorial etiology, in which the person has great difficulty identifying feelings of hunger, satiety, and feeding, which may affect their nutritional status. Pathologically, it is associated with neurodegeneration of synapses followed by neuronal loss, accompanied by glial proliferation surrounded by neurofibrillary tangles, beta-amyloid peptide (Aβ) deposition, inflammation and cerebrovascular injury hindering the ability to perform activities of daily living.
