It is an important component of language and language learning as the lack of it hampers a person’s ability to comprehend and communicate effectively. This research analyzes the derivational affixes found in the selected poems of Fernando A. Bernardo in his book entitled The Silent Voice of Your Soul. This research is important as it can help enrich and widen the vocabulary of readers by helping them identify derivational affixes and the functions of these affixes. Translation plays an important role in understanding different cultures and societies. Among the various kinds of translation, many scholars have debated the difficulty even impossibility of literary translation, especially Poetry. Translation of poetry requires the preservation of the specific aesthetic and expressive value when the work is transferred from the source language to the target language, which may be changed or altered after translating the work. This study discusses the different linguistic, cultural, and aesthetic issues in translating poetry. Language and literature are essentially connected, and one cannot function without the other. Thus, this study analyzes the language functions used by the main characters in the short story The Summer Solstice by Nick Joaquin. This study aims to determine the types of Language functions in the short story and identify the most dominant language function used by the main characters. Moreover, the study also aims to analyze the context of the language functions identified. The researchers used Janet Holmes' Theory of Language Function (2013) to analyze the utterances of the main characters and Dell Hymes' SPEAKING Model to analyze the context of the language functions in each utterance. The researchers then applied the descriptive qualitative design to systematically analyze the data. The result of this study shows that out of the eight (8) language functions identified by Janet Holmes (2013), only seven (7) types of language functions were found in the short story, namely expressive, directive, heuristic, referential, metalinguistic, phatic functions. On the other hand, poetic function was not found in this research. The findings revealed that this story dominantly uses expressive functions, in which the speaker's emotion is what captures the interest of the readers.

The researcher applies Discourse Analysis to analyze the main character’s utterances. In addition, the researcher also uses Indexicality Principle by Bucholtz and Hall (2005) as a mechanism to analyze identity. Qualitative content analysis is used to analyze thoroughly and interpret text data to draw inference towards the utterances on the short story.  The result of the study show that Dr. Heidegger is labeled mostly with negative words by others, however, he responded to combat these labels by using re-appropriation or by revaluing the existing labels. Moreover, the stances taken by Dr. Heidegger are found to position himself among others. Together with the labels given by self and others, and his interlocutor(s) in his talk-in-interactions the findings reveal that the he is a strange old man...

This study is based on translation theory, which recognizes the idea that different languages encode meaning in differing forms. This study also shows the complications in translating poetry as compared to other literary works like prose. The aim of this research is to discuss the different linguistic, cultural, and aesthetic issues in translating poetry specifically, in the Filipino translation of William Shakespeare"s Sonnet 18. This study is significant as it encourages experimental strategies that can show the uniqueness of translation as a linguistic and cultural practice.As a result of this study, it can be concluded that the task of the translator is not to express what is to be conveyed but to find the intended effect upon the language into which she/he is translating in a way that leads to produce the echo of the original, even though it is impossible to be able to create a replica of the original text.

The result of the study shows that Agueda is an assertive and strong willed young woman, who likes to do whatever she wants. Her utterances also show how resentful she has become after her marriage with Badoy. The conclusion can be drawn that language is an important factor in creating an identity of a person, and this identity can be formed through the stances and linguistic features, which are greatly affected by the society, culture, and people that surround an individual.
