Resumo: O Domboc, código de leis do rei Alfredo, o Grande, escrito na década de 890, é geralmente tido como uma obra legislativa cujos objetivos centrais foram os de afirmar o poder régio e auxiliar na criação de uma identidade inglesa. Enquanto diversos trabalhos se direcionaram para a análise de aspectos referentes a estes objetivos, poucos se voltaram para assuntos mais periféricos, como o tratamento dispensado pelo Domboc a outras esferas da sociedade, como, por exemplo, a Igreja. Tendo isso em vista, o presente artigo objetiva, em permanente diálogo com outros autores que trataram de semelhantes temas, verificar de que forma as leis de Alfredo, o Grande, tratam questões relativas à Igreja e à autoridade eclesiástica e leiga, no contexto de secularização da Igreja durante o século IX. Buscaremos, assim, entender as leis como reveladoras da percepção régia sobre tal processo e como atuantes na conformação do contexto em que se inscrevem.

Abstract: The Domboc, the law-code of king Alfred the Great, written in the 890's, is typically understood as a legislative work which has as its central goals the affirmation of royal power and the creation of an English identity. As multiple works dealt with analysis of aspects related to these goals, few of them turned to more peripheral subjects, like the treatment given by the Domboc to other spheres of society, like, for example, the Church. With this in mind, this article aims, in permanent interaction with other authors who's works address similar subjects, to verify how the laws of Alfred the Great treated issues related to the Church and ecclesiastical and lay authority, in the context of secularization of the Church in the 9th century. We thus aim to understand the laws as revealing of the royal perception on such process and as acting towards the conformation of their context.

A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar os usos da religião em seis obras escritas na Inglaterra entre os séculos IX e XII, em seus relatos sobre a Era Viking e sobre as invasões e permanência escandinavas na ilha. Considerando as diversas relações estabelecidas entre ingleses e escandinavos e o processo de unificação da Inglaterra sob a realeza de Wessex, buscamos investigar como autores ingleses, com sua agenda geralmente pró-realeza e anti-escandinava, articularam conceitos como Paganismo, Cristianismo e Conversão em suas narrativas. Utilizando-nos tanto de obras produzidas durante a Era Viking quanto em períodos posteriores, objetivamos empreender uma análise completa do tema e dos diferentes pontos de vista a partir dos quais os autores ingleses trataram do mesmo, seja olhando para sua realidade imediata, seja olhando para o passado. Nesse contexto, atentaremos para as relações transtextuais estabelecidas entre as obras, conforme aquelas produzidas em períodos mais antigos serviram como fontes para aquelas produzidas em períodos mais tardios. Objetivamos, assim, construir um panorama do tratamento dispensado aos escandinavos pelos autores ingleses, no que diz respeito aos aspectos religiosos da relação entre ambos os povos e atentando para o olhar e os interesses próprios das elites – seja a corte régia, a aristocracia laica ou os eclesiásticos – que produziram as obras analisadas.

This research aims to analyze the uses of religion in six works written in England between the 9th and the 12th centuries, in its accounts of the Viking Age and the Scandinavian invasions and settlement in the isle. Considering the multiple relations established between English and Scandinavians, and the process of unification of England under the kings of Wessex, we seek to investigate how the English authors, with their often pro-royalty and anti-Scandinavian agenda, articulated concepts such as Paganism, Christianity and Conversion in their narratives. Using both works produced during the Viking Age and in later times, we seek to undertake a complete analysis of such subject and of the different points of view from which the English authors treated it, looking at their immediate reality or to the past. In this context, we shall pay attention to the transtextual relationships established between such works, as those produced in earlier periods were used as sources by those produced in later ones. We thus seek to build an overview of the treatment given by the English authors to the Scandinavians, concerning the religious aspects of the relation between both peoples and paying special attention to the point of view and interests of the elites – whether the court, the aristocracy or the ecclesiastics – who produced the analyzed works.
