One of the limiting factors in organic farming is the scarcity of allowed fertilizers and chemicals for plant protection. Plant and compost extracts are a promising solution for fertilization because of their positive effect on plant growth and soil microbial activity. Nettle extract was already successfully applied to some vegetables. Not-aerated nettle extract, obtained from dry nettle leaves, was applied in experiments with green beans in a quantity of 1 L per pot at two-day intervals was studied. A three-factorial experimental design was applied with two soil types (brown—Calcic Gleysol and red—Eutric Cambisol), soil disinfection with dazomet or not, and irrigated with nettle extract or water. Nettle extract application increased all above-ground traits; plant height, leaf area, flower buds, shoot dry weight at flowering, pod length, pod diameter, and shoot dry weight at harvest by 49%, 66%, 43%, 36%, 11%, 9%, and 37%, respectively, the root length at harvest by 59%, total yield...

We describe a new method using flow-injection analysis with spectro-photometric detection, suitable for the determination of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC). The proposed method is appropriate for the determination of NAC in reaction with Pd(2+) ions in the concentration range from 1.0 × 10(-5) mol L(-1) to 6.0 × 10(-5) mol L(-1). The detection limit NAC was 5.84 × 10(-6) mol L(-1) and the recorded relative standard deviation of the method is in the range from 1.67 to 4.11%. NAC and Pd(2+) form complexes of Pd(2+):NAC molar ratios of 1:1 and 1:2, depending on the ratio of their analytical concentrations. The cumulative conditional stability constant for the Pd(NAC)(2)(2+) complex is β(12)' = 2.69 × 10(9) L(2) mol(-2). The proposed method was compared with the classic spectrophotometric determination of NAC, using the same reagent, PdCl(2), and had shown certain advantages: a) shorter analysis time; b) the use of smaller volumes of sample and reagents, which make the proposed method ch...

Loggerhead sea turtle (C. caretta) is the official European bioindicator of marine litter in the Mediterranean Sea. In 2019, 8 sea turtles, out of 28 specimens loggerhead on the Adriatic coast of Molise, were subjected to necropsy. The intestinal contents were collected and the microplastics until 0.45 μm were extracted. Qualitative and quantitative assessments were performed by stereomicroscope observation and spectroscopic analyses (attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ATR-FTIR and Raman microspectroscopy, RMS). Moreover, the analytical quantification of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polycarbonate (PC), para phthalic acid (PTA) and bisphenol A (BPA) in fat and liver tissues was performed by LC-MS/MS. Microparticles ranging from 0.45 μm to 1 mm were found in all turtles, for a total of 623, while plastic litter greater than 1 mm were found only in 4 specimens (ranging from 0.03 to 0.11 g). Nineteen different polymers and 10 pigments, including po...

The determination of trace metals in organic matrices is still highly demanding despite improvements in analytical instrumentation. The present study was undertaken in order to evaluate electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry for the determination of cadmium, copper, iron, lead, and nickel in olive oil. A variety of approaches were used. The most suitable digestion procedure was heating the samples at 300°C for 24 hours and ashing in a muffle furnace at 450°C for 16 hours. The validation data were detection limits of 0.2–153 ng g−1; mean trueness on certified reference materials of 81–94%; mean recovery on spikes of 90–120%; and repeatability of 12–53%. The combined relative uncertainty was 0.298–0.766. Oils processed by pressing had higher copper, iron, and lead concentrations than oils processed by centrifugation. The reported method provides an efficient way for monitoring trace metal content during olive oil production.

In order to investigate the potential of various olive cultivars and leaf sampling times for phytochemical farming practice in Croatia, phenolic and mineral composition was determined in olive leaves of four Croatian cultivars and Italian cultivar Leccino collected at three occasions, in October 2017, January 2018, and March 2018. Istarska bjelica turned out to have the largest phytochemical potential among the investigated cultivars due to steady high oleuropein concentrations found in its leaves. The concentration of main phenolic components in Istarska bjelica leaves changed only slightly during the sampling period, suggesting the possibility of its higher capability for low air temperatures stress resistance and different metabolic response compared to the other studied cultivars. Low air temperatures increased the oleuropein level and antioxidant activity in leaves of Leccino, Oblica, Levantinka, and Drobnica cultivars, which may be of crucial phytochemical farming interest. Ea...

The interactive effects of cultivar, collecting period, and geographical location on the content and composition of biophenols and macro and micronutrients in olive (Olea europaea L.) leaf were investigated. Leaves of six cultivars were collected at three periods in two locations in Croatia. The leaves of Istarska bjelica cultivar had the greatest biophenol (oleuropein) potential, especially those sampled in January and in March at the location of Pag. All the cultivars yielded leaves with the highest concentration of biophenols in March, which coincided with the pruning period. Except for high oleuropein concentration in Istarska bjelica, flavonoids were found to be most useful for differentiating olive leaves according to cultivar. Verbascoside turned out to be the most potent differentiator of collecting periods, while phosphorus and zinc turned out to be most useful for differentiating locations. Despite different agroecological conditions at the two locations, cultivar exhibite...

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is one of the traditional fruits cultivated in the Mediterranean part of Croatia with more intensive cultivation in the recent years. The objective of study was to determine leaf nutrient concentrations of seven pomegranate cultivars (five Croatian and two introduced) grown on calcareous soil as leaf nutrient analysis is consider being the best tool for diagnosing fruit tree nutritional status. Significant differences between cultivars have been found for leaf P, Ca, Mg, Fe and Zn concentrations. All cultivars leaf K, Mg, Fe and Zn concentrations were under literature cited thresholds for possible deficiencies, although no visible deficiency symptoms were found. Cultivar Sladun had highest concentration of all determined nutrients and could be possible option for organic and low input cultivation.

Anti-insect photoselective nets present a new technology that combines light manipulation and pest protection in orchards. In this study, the effect of the anti-insect photoselective red net on the generative and vegetative traits was studied in an apple orchard near the city of Zadar, Croatia. 'Granny Smith' apples were grown on M9 rootstock and raised as slender spindles. The experiment consisted of two treatments: the trees covered with the red photoselective anti-insect nets (AGRITECH S. r. l., Eboli, Italy; mesh size of 2.4 × 4.8 mm) and uncovered trees as control. Yield, percentage of fruit with diameter >70 mm and fruit mass were not significantly different between treatments. L* color value was higher on fruit skin grown under the red net, and there was no significant difference in other color values (a*, b*, C* and h°). Soluble solids concentration (SSC) and total flavonoid content were significantly lower in fruit grown under red net than in control, and there w...

Common pruning of all cultivars of Vitis vinifera L. in Dalmacija region uses short cane with two to three buds. The aim of this study is to determine bud fertility of two traditional cultivars ‘Maraština’ and ‘Plavina’ along the one-year old cane and to propose optimal number of buds on the cane for high yield in the following year. Bud fertility was determined by counting the number of fruits per each bud along the cane. Bud fertility increases along the clusters of ‘Maraština’ cultivar from first to fifth bud, except low yield at fourth bud, and has trend of stagnation from sixth to seventh bud. At statistical significance of 5% 1.-st bud (0.5) has lower fertility than buds above 3.-rd, except 4.-th bud. Buds 2.-5. (0.8-1.2) have lower fertility than 6.-th bud (1.6), with 5.th bud being similar to 6.-th and 7.-th bud. Bud fertility along the cane of ‘Plavina’ cultivar had slow trend of increase from first to fifth bud and steeper increase at sixth to eight bud. At statistical sig...

The use of anti-hail photoselective nets is new approach in protecting the fruits against hail damage, sunburn and against pests in combination with activating desired physiological responses in fruit trees. The trial was established on the apple Malus domestica Borkh. cv. ‘Cripps Pink’ grafted on M9 rootstock in Mediterranean climate of Croatia. Four nets were used: white (W), yellow (Y) and red (R) net from Tenax Company (Italy) and Stop Drosophila Normal (D) from Artes Politechnica Company (Italy). Only white net showed higher yield than control (C). The trees grown under the W and R nets had higher portion of fruits diameter 70-80 mm than C trees and trees grown under the Y net, while D net was similar to other treatments. Nets reduced fruit skin colour, especially Y net which had highest portion of less coloured fruit. Maturation of fruit grown on the trees under the W and R nets, was 9 days earlier than fruit grown on the trees under the D and Y nets. The study showed that net...

Tillage and agrochemicals negatively affect soil organic matter (SOM) content and microbial activity. Intense cultivation of the Nadin valley began in the 1950s after hydro melioration. Our objective was to assess the microbial activity and SOM and to propose the improvements in soil management. Samples were collected according to randomized stratified design from organic (O) and conventional (C) plowed agricultural soils, from natural grass vegetation soils (G) and from abandoned vineyard soils (A). Dehydrogenases activity (DHA) and soil moisture were analyzed at 6 cm increments and C (total, organic and inorganic) and total N were analyzed at 2 cm increments, both to the depth of 18 cm. DHA was higher in G and in A than in C or O. DHA decreased with depth from 0-6 cm to 6-12 cm and 12-18 cm depth. Soil water content was higher in O than in C or G. Soils contained 67±16 mg/g total carbon (organic + carbonate), 17±8.0 mg/g organic carbon, and 1.5±0.49 mg/g total soil nitrogen (organ...
