Summary: Manuscript military plans from the period of the Thirty Years' War represent a very interesting, but so far relatively little researched authentic source of information about the contemporary military. The authors of these plans were not only specialized military engineers, but in some cases also skilled army officers. The aim of this paper is to present this topic through examples depicting the most common types of field fortifications on selected contemporary military plans from the collections of Czech and European archives.

This text represents supplementary material to the book "Pieter Snayers-Battle Painter 1592-1667". Specifically, this text is dedicated to a series of 5 large-format battle paintings by Pieter Snayers that were not known to the authors of the book at the time the book was published. These paintings can be found in the collections of two Turin palaces (Palazzo Reale and Palazzo Carignano). According to the author of this text, they are closely related to the unique engraving of the siege of Saint-Omer in 1638, located in the Archivio di Stato di Torino. Based on the study of the related contemporary pictorial and textual materials, the author believes that this pictorial series depicts key episodes of the relief of Saint-Omer from the French siege in 1638. This pictorial series was probably commissioned by Thomas Francis of Savoy, Prince of Carignano, who commanded Spanish troops, which played a key role in liberating the town of Saint-Omer from the French siege.

This paper gives an overview of the emergence and development of mobile light field artillery in selected European countries during the first half of the Thirty Years' War. In the final part of the paper, the importance of the collection of four field bronze cannons from the period of the Thirty Years' War at the Opočno Castle in East Bohemia is also discussed.

The potential of the airborne laser scanning technology (LIDAR) is nowadays well known in archaeology and hence its application for archaeological surveys is relatively well established in a number of countries. More widespread use of this technology is limited, however, by relatively high costs when the scanning is provided as a custom service. A cheaper alternative may be represented by LIDAR data provided by public surveying offices, as is, for example, the case in the German Free State of Bavaria, where high resolution LIDAR data (DGM1) are available for the entire area of the state. This paper will present research on a selection of field fortifications from the period of the Thirty Years’ War in four localities in Bavaria: Fürholz (1619), Waidhaus (1621), Zirndorf (1632), and Nördlingen (1634), as seen through the DGM1 data, and with the help of selected GIS analytical tools. The typology of these field fortifications will be discussed and related to their respective uses in the context of the Thirty Years' War.

This paper presents the results of metal detector prospection at two battlefields from the Bohemian phase of the Thirty Years War: Rakovník (1620), and Rozvadov (1621). These prospections were undertaken in 2010–2012, and were organized by the TGM Museum of Rakovník (Rakovník project), and the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University (Rozvadov project), respectively. The projects involved all-year-round fieldwork, along with archive and historical research. In both cases field prospection by non-destructive inspection and topographical survey was supplemented and greatly enriched by the use of metal detectors; surface or topsoil finds were accurately surveyed and located by means of GPS. The most frequent metallic finds recovered by the metal detector surveys were leaden and ferrous projectiles of different calibers (pistol, harquebus, musket, and even field cannons or mortars). No fewer than 340 of these objects were recovered at Rakovník, and 336 at Rozvadov. When considered alongside textual and cartographic sources, computer-based modeling of the calibers, and spatial distribution of these finds brought several new insights into the history of both battles, and also enhanced understandings of warfare at the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War in general.

The book is the first Czech-language monograph devoted to the battle of Nördlingen in 1634. With this book, the author builds on his earlier German-language works on this battle and, in addition to the necessary updates and corrections, adds a separate section dedicated to soldiers from Bohemia and Moravia fighting in the Battle of Nördlingen. In this context, special attention is paid to the personality of Jan Jakub z Thurnu / Johann Jakob von Thurn.

The Rozvadov battlefield features a large and unique set of well-preserved early modern field fortifications, which is unparalleled in the Czech lands. Systematic survey of a selected part of the battlefield with metal detectors has brought very important insights into the locations and character of individual combat operations as well as weapons and equipment of early modern armies. Among other things, unique finds of artillery projectiles and a large and unique set of engineering tools. The results of field archaeological research were complemented by the study of a comprehensive set of written sources for the battle and the analysis of a unique collection of cartographic and iconographic sources.
