The objective of the study was to assess the influence of market coverage on return on asset in the microfinance industry in Kenya. The population of the study consisted of microfinance institutions with physical banking halls and registered with the Association of Microfinance Institutions in Kenya. We used descriptive cross-sectional survey design and collected data through semi-structured questionnaire. Data on return on asset were collected from annual industry performance reports prepared by the Microfinance Rating Africa and the Association of Microfinance Institutions in Kenya. We subjected our data through reliability and validity tests. We tested our hypothesis through regression analysis. The results of our study demonstrate that market coverage has strong statistical significant influence on return on asset in the Microfinance industry. In addition, the results demonstrate that distribution capability of the firm has a significant positive influence on return on asset. We...

The major motivation behind this study is the fact that in the face of the current high unemployment and economic hardships small businesses have remained a source of livelihood to many citizens in Kenya. Indeed, it is the small business experience that has enabled many big companies to flourish. Studies have established that currently many school leavers have found these businesses a major stepping stone to counter long periods wasted before job acquisition or before any further training. This study aimed at investigating the marketing practices adopted by small and medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Makueni district the case o f clothing and footwear. It is noted that small districts have been shoved off from the larger Makueni district and are not fully operational which include Kimbwezi and Mbooni districts. For the purposes of this study the former larger Makueni district has been considered. This study was a survey of marketing practices adopted by small and medium enterprises in Ma...

The objective of our study is to assess the influence of organizational culture and industry competition on performance of microfinance institutions in Kenya. The population of the study comprise microfinance institutions that are members of the Association of Microfinance Institutions (AMFI) in Kenya. We used descriptive cross-sectional survey design. We collected secondary data from annual industry performance reports by AMFI. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaire. We analyze data through Chi-square tests, factor analysis and regression analysis. Results of Cronbach’s alpha test confirm reliability of our measurement scales. Our results demonstrate that organizational culture has significant positive influence on performance when the latter is measured using subjective performance indicators. However, the relationship between organizational culture and financial performance is not statistically significant. The results also indicate that industry competition...

This study was to establish whether loyalty of commercial bank corporate customers was impacted by attributes of mobile phone banking. The specific objective was to determine the extent to which mobile phone banking attributes influence commercial bank customer loyalty. The study was anchored on diffusion of innovations theory and used a positivistic approach and descriptive cross-sectional design. The target population of the study was 78 top managers from 26 commercial banks in Kenya offering mobile phone banking services. Regression analyses tested the hypothesis to determine whether mobile phone banking attributes impacted on corporate customer loyalty. The research hypothesis showed a strong relationship (R=.728). This was an indication that mobile phone banking dimensions explained 53% (R 2 =.530) of customer loyalty. The other variables in the firm explained the remaining 47%.  P-value of less than 0.05 implied that mobile phone banking attributes had statistically significant...

Dadaab Refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, hosts nearly 340,000 refugees in five subcamps (Dagahaley, Hagadera, Ifo, Ifo2, and Kambioos) (1). On November 18 and 19, 2015, during an ongoing national cholera outbreak (2), two camp residents were evaluated for acute watery diarrhea (three or more stools in ≤24 hours); Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 serotype Ogawa was isolated from stool specimens collected from both patients. Within 1 week of the report of index cases, an additional 45 cases of acute watery diarrhea were reported. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and their health-sector partners coordinated the cholera response, community outreach and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) activities; Médecins Sans Frontiéres and the International Rescue Committee were involved in management of cholera treatment centers; CDC performed laboratory confirmation of cases and undertook GIS mapping and postoutbreak response assessment; and the Garissa County Government and t...

Diseases of zoonotic origin contribute to the burden of febrile illnesses in developing countries. We evaluated serologic evidence of exposure to Bacillus anthracis, Brucella spp., spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFGR), and typhus group rickettsioses (TGR) from samples of persons aged 15-64 years collected during a nationwide human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) serosurvey conducted in 2007 in Kenya. The seropositivity observed for pathogens was B. anthracis 11.3% (141/1,091), Brucella spp. 3.0% (27/968), SFGR 23.3% (191/770), and TGR 0.6% (12/770). On univariate analysis, seropositivity for each pathogen was significantly associated with the following risk factors: B. anthracis with province of residence; Brucella spp. with sex, education level, and wealth; SFGR with age, education level, wealth, and province of residence; and TGR with province of residence. On multivariate analysis, seropositivity remained significantly associated with wealth and province for B. anthracis; with s...

This paper sought to establish the role of Firm characteristics in the relationship between marketing strategies and firm performance of Food and Beverage processing Companies in Kenya. The study adopted a descriptive cross sectional survey method. A census survey comprising 71 senior managers was contacted for this study. Data was analyzed using descriptive and simple regression analysis. The findings established that there is a positive correlation between structure related characteristics (Age and size) and performance of food and beverage processing companies. The regression results revealed positive moderating effects of firm characteristics in the relationship between Marketing strategies and firm performance. This study gives a theoretical contribution in strategic marketing literature by suggesting a model that explains the role of moderating variable in the marketing strategiesfirm performance relationship in manufacturing context as supported by the empirical results prese...
