Abstract This study utilizes a structural equation modeling approach to construct a scale to measure Chinese college students’ intercultural contact and to explore the pathways from intercultural contact to intercultural competence and their significance. Through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, the study conducted a series of reliability and validity analyses. The results indicate that the intercultural contact scale for Chinese college students has good reliability and validity. Moreover, a path analysis with the structural equation model was performed and reveals that the pathways of intercultural contact are beneficial for improving Chinese college students’ intercultural competence. In terms of direct contact, domestic social media is the most important, whereas for indirect contact, cultural products are relatively more important than multimedia and courses. The implications for the theoretical development of intercultural contact could be significant for scholars engaged in intercultural communication as well as for planning international education training programs.

The communication revolution launched by new media has significant effects and implications for the theory and praxis of intercultural communication (Shuter, 2012, p. 220). The volume Mediated Intercultural Communication in a Digital Age, edited by Ahmet Atay and Margaret U. D’Silva, provides extensive and prolonged studies of the reciprocal relationship between media and intercultural communication. Specifically, this book explores mediated intercultural communication with various topics of identity research and contemporary issues relevant to intercultural communication from a media perspective in the context of globalization, which makes a great contribution to both theoretical and practical exploration to mediated intercultural communication. Accordingly, this volume is targeted at researchers, scholars, and students who are interested in the discipline of media and intercultural communication.

Whether a text should be acculturated into the target system or should retain traces of its foreign origin has been a long-standing debate in translation studies (Bassnett, 2005, p. 120). In Translation Strategies in Global News: What Sarkozy Said in the Suburbs, author Claire Scammell challenges the traditional and dominant way of news translation and puts forward a more moderate alternative that can better convey the cultural connotation in different languages—the foreignized approach. The book remarkably contributes to exploring a distinctive approach to current news translation practices from the perspective of reader response and examining the availability of foreignization to a degree as a tool to promote effective intercultural communication. This volume can function as a guidebook for global journalists and news translators, as well as scholars in the fields of journalism, translation studies, and intercultural communication.

In order to negotiate effectively in an international business context, negotiators must possess negotiation skills and knowledge of the other (Groves, Feyerherm, & Gu, 2015, p. 2). The volume The Palgrave Handbook of Cross-Cultural Business Negotiation, edited by Mohammad Ayub Khan and Noam Ebner, examines how culture impacts negotiation through applying negotiation and cultural theories into analyses on negotiation styles, strategies, and techniques as well as on negotiators’ qualities in different countries. This volume mainly elaborates on some foundational theories associated with cross-cultural negotiation and exploring useful practices of negotiating with various countries in business contexts. Therefore, this book is a must-read for negotiation practitioners and academics in the field of negotiation, cross-cultural interaction, international business, and international relations.

This essay conducts a bibliometric study on innovation research in organizations within the three levels (i.e., individual, work team, and organizational) by using CiteSpace software to analyze 6,354 academic articles from the year 2000 to 2020 in four aspects: temporal distribution of published papers, scientific community (countries/regions/cited authors), intellectual structure (cited journals/cited references), and research hotspots. The research findings show that the total number and the growth rate of publications at the organizational level are far higher than the other two levels (individual and work team). The top three countries with the number of publications are United States, China, and United Kingdom. The top five highly cited authors are identified and listed from individual, work team, and organizational levels. Academy of Management Journal and Academy of Management Review are the top two highly cited journals at all three levels (i.e., individual, work team, and o...

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ learning motivation and learning outcomes in a blended learning environment. A questionnaire was administered to 960 EFL students, and 10 of them participated in an interview. Following a series of analyses on the data collected through the questionnaire, consisting of exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, descriptive analysis, and correlation analysis, a structural relationship model that integrated learning motivation and learning outcomes was developed and tested. The results reveal that both intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation have a positive relationship with learning outcomes within a blended learning environment, both of which are conducive to improving students’ English linguistic competence and facilitating their psychological development of English learning. Moreover, intrinsic motivation is more important than extrinsic motivation....

As acculturation research has become more interdisciplinary and dynamic over the last 20 years, it is necessary to explore its emerging trends. We collected 10,039 research articles on acculturation research from 2000 to 2020 from the Web of Science (WoS) database and utilized the CiteSpace tool to visualize emerging trends. During the data analysis, we extracted noun phrases from the abstracts of the retrieved articles to identify clusters, and the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) algorithm was used to generate cluster labels in the co-citation network. Based on the size of the clusters, the five largest clusters were chosen and analyzed: “Asian cultural value,” “Suicide attempt,” “Unhealthy behavior,” “Host country identification,” and “Emerging adulthood”. These findings may help researchers and scholars gain useful insight and explore topics related to the research trends in acculturation.
