    Cnidarians are a disparate and ancient phylum, encompassing corals and jellyfish, and occupy both the pelagic and benthic realms. They have a rich fossil record from the Phanerozoic eon lending insight into the early history of the group but, although cnidarians diverged from other animals in the Precambrian period, their record from the Ediacaran period (635–542 million years ago) is controversial. Here, we describe a new fossil cnidarian—Auroralumina attenboroughii gen. et sp. nov.—from the Ediacaran of Charnwood Forest (557–562 million years ago) that shows two bifurcating polyps enclosed in a rigid, polyhedral, organic skeleton with evidence of simple, densely packed tentacles. Auroralumina displays a suite of characters allying it to early medusozoans but shows others more typical of Anthozoa. Phylogenetic analyses recover Auroralumina as a stem-group medusozoan and, therefore, the oldest crown-group cnidarian. Auroralumina demonstrates both the establishment of the crown group...

    A series of three conceptual cross-sections have been constructed to illustrate the superficial deposits of the Cardiff area. Deposits of Devensian-age Till, Hummocky Glacial Deposits and Glaciofluvial Deposits, provide evidence for the limit of the Late Pleistocene glaciation in the area, while Alluvium, Peat and Tidal Flat Deposits record the post-glacial landscape evolution. The conceptual sections have been constructed to inform a program of borehole classification and 3D model construction as part of the BGS Wales Cardiff City Region research program. Conceptual cross-sections, a review of key literature, a summary of the superficial geology of Cardiff are all presented in this report. Some of the challenges presented by reconstructing subsurface spatial relationships from borehole log data are also discussed.

    The first annual hydrograph from an ephemerally-flooded doline in the UK is described. Flood duration and volume were characterised by combining water-level data with a detailed topographic survey. Rapid surface runoff of Na–SO4 -type water is derived from a localized topographic catchment. The inflow stream produced a ‘flashy’ hydrograph with maximum flood depths reaching 7m when the doline can contain 7,383 m3 of water. Flooding occurred over 161 of the 365 day study period, with an average flood depth of 2.4m. Stage dependent drainage properties suggested that water loss is greater when the flood depth is >3m, indicating that there may be additional drainage conduits at higher levels within the doline. A conservative estimate of 138 ML year is provided for net loss of water to the underlying aquifer.     The Cardiff Urban Geo Observatory was established to characterise, monitor and model groundwater and heat flow in a shallow urban aquifer. Mapping showed that shallow ground groundwater temperatures exceeded 150C, due to effects of the subsurface urban heat island (Farr et al, 2017). A 3D model of the superficial deposits was created to better understand the aquifer dimensions and as a framework for a hydrogeological heat flow model.

    Background The original objective of this work was to a ssemble a 1:50 000 (50k) resolution 3D Geological Framework Model for an area south of Ammanfor d. The model was to have two main purposes: 1. To form the basis for a communication tool to present the 3D geological understanding of the area to a range of stakeholders; and 2. To support the reinterpretation of th e geological succession mapped at surface. This study specifically excludes the further development of th e Framework Model to include hydrogeology, hydrochemistry or rock mechanics and does not include any consideration of potentially suitable resources such as Coal Bed Methane. This report provides the explanation of the me thodology and how this model was generated. Additional outputs of the study include: 1. An ArcGIS project containing the da ta used to compile the model; and 2. Surface observations of the geology collected foll owing Sigma workflows, held in a GIS.     The Appalachian–Caledonian Orogen preserves a complex record of piecemeal trans-oceanic terrane transfer and accretion during the early Paleozoic collision between West Gondwana and Laurentia, whilst the intervening Iapetus oceanic tracts were largely destroyed. The now preserved terranes include arc fragments of Laurentian and Gondwanan affinity, oceanic fragments incorporated into the Gondwanan continental margin, and remnants of the Gondwanan continental slope apron and adjacent platform (both Ganderia and Megumia). A new tectonostratigraphic synthesis for the island of Anglesey (and adjacent NW Wales) reveals a comprehensive record of the Appalachian orogenic cycle in the UK segment of the orogen of the peri-Gondwanan margin prior to amalgamation into the Laurentian margin.
